‘Beyond comprehension’: Myanmar admits killing Rohingya

January 11, 2018 by Nasheman

[Mohammad Ponir Hossain/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation as the Myanmar army admitted for the first time that its soldiers murdered 10 Rohingya Muslims.

The remains of the victims in question were found buried in a mass grave outside Inn Din, a village in Maungdaw, Rakhine State, in December.

Soldiers and villagers were involved in the killings of “Bengali terrorists” and legal action would be taken against them, according to a statement posted on Wednesday to the Facebook page of Min Aung Hlaing, the military’s commander-in-chief.

Myanmar refers to members of the persecuted Rohingya, a mostly Muslim minority, as Bengalis. The country does not recognise the community as one of its ethnic groups.

As part of an ongoing campaign against the group, Myanmar also rejects many peaceful Rohingya citizens as “terrorists”.

The military’s unprecedented statement on Wednesday came after months of denial of any wrongdoing towards the Rohingya.

Ro Nay San Lwin, a Rohingya activist, said he did not believe the army’s account of the incident.

Hlaing admitted killing “but the story is false”, he said on Twitter.

Myanmar’s government has repeatedly denied allegations of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, and refused UN investigators’ and journalists’ access to areas of the country affected by violence.

Amnesty calls for investigation

Amnesty International, the UK-based rights group, said the military admitting wrongdoing over the incident was a positive development, but just “the tip of the iceberg”.

“It is only the tip of the iceberg and warrants serious independent investigation into what other atrocities were committed amid the ethnic cleansing campaign that has forced out more than 655,000 Rohingya from Rakhine State since last August,” said James Gomez, Amnesty International’s regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

“It is appalling that soldiers have attempted to justify extrajudicial executions by saying they were needed as reinforcements elsewhere and did not know what to do with the men. Such behaviour shows a contempt for human life which is simply beyond comprehension.”

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees have fled what the UN and several countries have labelled ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State since clashes broke out between government security forces and Rohingya fighters on August 25 .

Fleeing Rohingya have reported many stories of mass killings, gang rape, and arson attacks by security forces.

Uttar Pradesh policeman held for raping minor

January 11, 2018 by Nasheman

An Uttar Pradesh police constable has been arrested on charges of raping a seven-year-old girl at his one-room flat here, police said on Thursday.

The crime came to light after an angry mob of villagers caught Subhash Singh, 45, posted in the Sales Tax Department in Gautam Budh Nagar, near his accommodation in Surajpur, thrashed him, and handed him over to police around 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

“Subhash took the girl, playing alone outside her home, to his flat around 3 p.m. on Wednesday and sexually assaulted her,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suniti told IANS.

A native of Uttar Pradesh’s Kaithi village, he escaped after neighbours gathered on hearing the girl’s cries for help.

Subhash returned to his room early on Thursday and allegedly attacked two women neighbours when they tried to catch hold of him.

Later, villagers caught and beat him up.

Police have lodged an FIR under Sections 342 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code dealing with rape, and punishment for wrongful confinement and Sections 5/6 of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act.

Police said it was awaiting the medical report of the girl from the district hospital in Noida’s Sector 30.

The girl’s mother works as a factory labourer and hails from Bihar. The child’s father died a few years ago.

Gadkari slams Indian Navy for obstructing Mumbai development

January 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday “attacked” the Indian Navy for creating obstacles in “development projects in Mumbai”, including opposing the plans for a floating jetty at Nariman Point.

Recently, the Bombay High Court declined permission to a private operator for building a jetty to launch seaplane services and a floatel since it did not get the green signal of the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command, ostensibly for security reasons.

“Actually, what does the navy have to do with Malabar Hill (in south Mumbai).. They should be guarding the borders of the country,” Gadkari remarked at a function where he laid the foundation stone for an international cruise terminal along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Giving a piece of his mind to Indian Navy accusing it of “creating roadblocks” in development projects, he sought to know why everyone on the navy wants to live in south Mumbai.

“They have come to me seeking a plot of land… I will not give them even an inch of land, please don’t come again,” Gadkari declared, in the presence of top naval, maritime and government officials, including Western Naval Command chief Vice Admiral Girish Luthra.

He said everybody wants to build quarters in south Mumbai’s prime land and opined that only a few important, senior officials should live there.

“We respect you, but you should go to the Pakistan border… Land on the eastern seafront is being developed by the state government and Mumbai Port Trust which will be for the benefit of local citizens,” Gadkari added.

“We are the government, The Navy and Defence ministry are not the government,” he said.

Gadkari also accused the Indian Navy of making it “a habit” to stall development projects and asked how was the force concerned with Malabar Hill area which is a residential zone with Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s official residences.

The Shipping Minister urged the navy to resolve the issues, pointing out that he chairs a committee of delayed infrastructure projects which are cleared as soon as they are put up on the agenda.

Incidentally, south Mumbai’s Colaba houses a large population of Indian Navy personnel, plus the headquarters of the WNC, residential quarters in Navy Nagar, and other pockets including Malad seafront.

The swank new international cruise terminal which will come up in the Mumbai port is slated to cost Rs 300 crore, and will have all facilities like an airport with separate arrival and departure lounges and cater to around 700,000 tourists annually arriving or departing by cruise liners. It is expected to be ready by December 2019.

January 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy today accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of tapping phones of Congress leaders in the state ahead of the assembly elections due early this year.

Pakistan suspend defence, intelligence cooperation with US

January 10, 2018 by Nasheman

by Naveed Siddiqui, Dawn

Pakistan has suspended military and intelligence cooperation with the United States in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s allegation that Pakistan has given the US “nothing but lies and deceit” and suspension of security aid for Pakistan, Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said while addressing a gathering at Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Speaking during a seminar titled ‘Contours of Security Environment of Pakistan’, Khan said the US is facing defeat in Afghanistan despite spending billions of dollars. He alleged that the US is using Pakistan as a ‘scapegoat’ for its failures in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan does not want to put a price on its sacrifices but wants them to be recognised,” the defence minister said, adding that Pakistan will not allow Afghanistan’s war to be fought on Pakistani territory.

Khan also said that the US is busy in a blame game against Pakistan rather than providing it with assistance to secure the Pak-Afghan border.

The US Embassy in Islamabad said it had not been informed about the suspension of military cooperation by Pakistan.

“We have not received any formal communication regarding a suspension,” Embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire said, according to VOA news.

Answering a question during the seminar, the defence minister said that Pakistan took the right steps by blocking Nato supplies to Afghanistan in the aftermath of 2011 attack at Salala check post.

But Pakistan is not taking the same route after Trump’s recent tirade as it is a “leverage we want to use at the appropriate time”, he clarified.

The defence minister said Iran, China and Russia are as important to the region as the US and reaffirmed Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif’s statement signalling that the alliance between Pakistan and the US is over.

“This is not how allies behave,” Asif had said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal earlier this week. He maintained that Washington has turned Islamabad into a “whipping boy” for its failures in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon on Monday said that the US has told Pakistan what it must do if it wants Washington to resume paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid.

“Our expectations are straightforward,” Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning told reporters.

“Taliban and Haqqani leadership and attack planners should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pakistani soil.”

Worsening relations
In the new year, Washington has increased pressure on Islamabad to “do more” in the fight against terrorism.

Washington has stated that the suspension of military aid, which came after Trump accused Pakistan of “lies and deceit”, is part of America’s South Asia strategy.

The development has followed in the aftermath of an increasingly terse back-and-forth between Washington and Islamabad since Trump announced the policy.

In Pakistan, the move has been seen as the first step to implementing Trump’s pledge to tighten economic restrictions on Islamabad.

Despite the tension, however, US and Pakistani officials remain in contact with each other. US Defence Secretary James Mattis on Friday said that the Pentagon was maintaining its communication with the Pakistani military establishment even after the suspension of military assistance.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua has said that Pakistan will continue to engage with Washington as far as possible, because America is not only a global power but also has a regional presence, and “for us it’s almost our neighbour”.
