Fortis Malar performs First-of-its-Kind transplant of Adult Hearts in Infant Cavity to save lives of Two children

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

• 8 years old Master Roman from Russia and 12 years old Ms Sri Supriya from Tamil Nadu were saved after a clinical breakthrough to place adult hearts into infant cavities
• First cases of adult to child heart transplant recorded in India as Fortis Malar joins rank among top hospitals in the world to successfully perform this clinical feat

Chennai, 20th March 2018: A team of doctors at Fortis Malar Hospital recently conducted two complicated heart transplant surgeries by placing adult hearts into the heart cavity of children to save two lives here recently. 8 years old Master Roman and 12 years old Ms Sri Supriya were suffering from life threatening heart conditions that required urgent heart transplants. However, due to paucity of hearts of their age and size, the team of doctors led by Dr KR Balakrishnan, Director, Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Malar Hospital and Dr Suresh Rao KG, Head of the Department, Critical Care and Cardiac Anaesthesia, Fortis Malar Hospital meticulously planned and performed this unique clinical feat to transplant two adult hearts into the cavity of these two children respectively.

The first heart transplant was performed on Master Roman, an 8-year-old boy from Russia who was admitted on 13th October 2017 at the hospital with prognosis of heart failure. Roman’s condition deteriorated with severe biventricular restrictive cardiomyopathy, a disease of heart muscle restricting flow of blood into the ventricles and his condition became more complicated when he had a cardiac arrest. After 45minutes of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), he was finally put on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), an advanced cardiac and respiratory life support system.

On the condition of the patient, Dr KR Balakrishnan said, “When Roman was brought into our hospital, he was in a critical condition. A heart transplant was the only way to cure him. We had to resort to ECPR to save his life until a heart was available for transplant. However, given the severity of his condition, we decided to do the transplant as soon as we can.”

Columbia Asia Hospital Emphasizes In Drinking Clean Water On This World Water Day.

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

World Water Day is observed every year on March 22 to focus on the importance of access to clean and fresh water, sanitation, and hygiene, which are huge challenges in developing nations in particular.

In 2010, the United Nations’ General Assembly recognized water and sanitation as human rights. It is not just about access to water, but it is also about the quality of water people drink. There are more than 663 million people around the world who live without supply of safe water near their homes; several people have to queue up for hours or travel long distances to access something so basic as water.

The need for clean drinking water cannot be overemphasized, as contaminated water (in water bodies) can lead to a whole host of ailments such as gastrointestinal infection, cholera, and dysentery, which can cause life-threatening forms of diarrhea.

The global statistics on diarrhea are alarming and disconcerting. The disease causes 4 percent of all deaths and 5 per of health loss to disability, worldwide (WHO statistics). It is said to be the second major cause of death among children under the age of five. Across the world, 2,195 children die due to this disease every day; this is more than the deaths due to diseases like AIDS, malaria and measles put together. Diarrhea is responsible for 1 out of 9 child deaths worldwide.

In India, about 1.2 lakh children under the age of five die due to this disease every year. This means there are 328 diarrhea-related deaths every day and 13 every hour! (Source: Ministry of Health).

Dr. Amita Bhandarkar, Senior Consultant – Internal Medicine and Diabetology, Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road speaks on the causes of diarrhea.

The root of the problem is gastrointestinal infection, which leads to the death of 2.2 million people every year across the world, especially in the developing nations.
Diarrheal infection is caused due to bacteria, virus, protozoa and other parasitic organisms (mainly E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis and rotavirus) that are spread from one person to another. The main reasons for diarrhoea are contaminated water, unclean food, malnutrition, improper sanitation, poor hygiene, and absence of immunization.
In under-developed and developing countries, water is contaminated with human faeces from sewage, septic tanks and toilets. Animal faeces too spread diarrhea-causing microbes. Fish and seafood from polluted water also can contribute to diarrhea.

How diarrhea affects people
A person suffering from diarrhea passes loose watery stools (in cholera) very frequently (more than three times a day). In the case of dysentery, stools are passed with blood. Diarrhea can last for a few days or even several weeks (if it is persistent).

Chronic and long-term diarrhea that lasts over three weeks is dangerous and is associated with bowel disorders. Severe diarrhea is life-threatening, especially among infants, young children and people with low nutrition and weakened immunity.

Diarrhea is also related to infections like malaria and measles.

Symptoms

People with diarrhea experience nausea, dehydration, fatigue, fever, abdominal bloating, cramps in the abdomen, pain in the rectum, and the urge to go to the toilet frequently. Blood or pus in the stool, liquidy stools and dark stools are also signs of trouble. In children, watch out for these symptoms: high fever, irritability, loss of skin elasticity, lack of saliva, sunken eyes, abdomen and cheeks.

Diagnosis and treatment
If the above symptoms are noticed, consult a healthcare provider or doctor immediately. Stool culture will help determine the bacteria or other organisms that are causing the infection. A blood test is done to ascertain the diseases that are not present in the body. A sigmoidoscopy investigates the inside of the lower part of the colon and rectum, while a colonoscopy will assess the entire colon.
Diarrhea is treated by replacing the fluids and electrolytes lost due to excessive passage of water in the stool. This is done by drinking oral rehydration fluids and salt solutions, water, clear soups and diluted juices. This will relieve the symptoms.
Diarrhea is usually allowed to run its course and resolve on its own; otherwise, it will lead to the body retaining the toxins that have to be ejected.
In case of severe dehydration, intravenous fluids may be given. Antibiotics are opted for only in case of moderate to severe diarrhea.

Ways to prevent diarrhea
· Drink safe, clean, boiled water.
· Use of good water filters.
· Practice good sanitation and personal hygiene.
· Wash hands often with soap and clean water, before and after eating, after using the bathroom, after changing diapers, after playing with pets, and after touching currency notes and coins.
· Do not tap water even for brushing.
· Avoid raw and exotic fish and meat.
· Eat more of cooked vegetables and fruits that can be peeled.
· Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly in clean water.
· Do not eat raw/undercooked meat and seafood.
· Avoid non-pasteurized dairy products.
· Do not eat uncovered food from the street.
· Be careful while using public toilets and restrooms.

Above all, awareness and health education about diarrhea and how it spreads will go a long way in preventing this dreadful disease. This calls for governmental intervention, community support, and personal will to follow simple yet essential hygiene practic

Government to reach out to opposition to bring peace to Parliament

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

As Parliament remained paralyzed for the 14th consecutive day, the government on Thursday decided to reach out to the opposition parties to ensure smooth functioning so that the pending bills get passed in both the Houses.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel, who has been assigned the task to talking to opposition leaders, met Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad for a brief discussion. He will again meet him to discuss the issues in detail.

The Minister said he would also meet leaders of the TDP, AIADMK, TRS and other parties.

Ever since the second phase of Parliament’s Budget session began on March 5, disruptions have crippled both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on a number of issues including demand for special status to Andhra Pradesh, Punjab National Bank fraud case and setting up of Cauvery Management Board.

The Congress, the Trinamool and some other opposition parties have been protesting against the banking fraud blamed on absconding jeweller Nirav Modi and his associates, while the TDP and the YSR Congress have been demonstrating for special status to Andhra Pradesh.

The AIADMK wants a board for the management of the disputed Cauvery river water. The TRS is demanding an increase in the reservation quota for jobs in Telangana.

“Only nine working days are left now after 14 wasted days. I request the opposition parties to ensure passage of important bills in both Houses. I am hopeful the opposition will cooperate,” Goel said.

“The government is in regular touch with the opposition leaders and I will meet them personally to ensure the smooth functioning of the Parliament,” he told reporters.

The Minister said the government was ready to discuss each and every issue concerning the political parties including no-confidence motion against the government.

“In fact the opposition is running away from discussion. We are ready to discuss even the no-confidence motion. We have adequate numbers in the House.”

Earlier, Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu met the leaders of different parties in his chamber and sought their support to get The Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill passed.

The Bill was passed by the Upper House before being adjourned for the day, however, without discussion and despite order in the House.

The Lok Sabha was also adjourned for the day, amid protests as opposition members trooped near the Speaker’s podium, raising slogans and displaying placards.

Anxiety, depression can trigger smartphone addiction

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

People who are less emotionally stable and suffer from anxiety and depression are more likely to be addicted to their smartphones, according to a research.

Emotional stability is characterised by being emotionally resilient. The study found that being less emotionally stable was associated with problematic smartphone behaviour.

People who struggle with their mental health are more likely to intensively use their smartphone as a form of therapy and that the less conscientious individuals are, the more likely they are to be addicted to their phones.

As levels of anxiety increase, problematic smartphone use also increases, the findings showed.

“Problematic smartphone use is more complex than previously thought and our research has highlighted the interplay of various psychological factors in the study of smartphone use,” Zaheer Hussain, Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Derby in Britain, said in a statement.

“This is because people may be experiencing problems in their lives such as stress, anxiety, depression, family problems, so in that state they are emotionally unstable, meaning they may seek respite in very excessive smartphone use. This is worrying,” Hussain said.

For the study, a team of psychologists conducted an online study with 640 smartphone users, aged between 13-69 years, to find out the association between smartphone use and personality traits.

The results showed that people who are “closed off” or less open with their emotions are more likely to have problems with smartphone use.

“They may be engaging in passive social network use, where you spend a lot of time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, browsing other peoples’ comments, pictures, and posts, and not posting anything of your own and not engaging in discussion with others, so there is no real positive social interaction while social networking,” Hussain noted.

Maldivian President ends Emergency

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen on Thursday lifted a widely denounced state of Emergency after a period of 45 days, stating that the situation in the atoll nation had returned to normal.

“Upon the advice of the security services and in an effort to promote normalcy, the President has decided to lift the state of Emergency,” President Yameen’s office said in a statement.

The President’s international spokesperson Ibrahim Shihab said all departments had been notified.

The state of Emergency was declared by Yameen on February 5 for a period of 15 days due to a “threat to the national security” following a Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of detained opposition leaders including self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed.

It was extended via a resolution of Parliament on February 20 for 30 days following a request by the President.

During the 45-day state of Emergency, the government said day-to-day activities of the citizens had not been affected and tourists could continue to visit the island nation.

Meanwhile, several members of Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) detained under Emergency powers were released without charge, the Maldives Independent reported.

MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, former MP Ilyas Labeeb and several council members were arrested in the build-up to the March 16 mass protest after police alleged there were plans to overthrow the government by inciting unrest and violence in the capital.

With constitutional due process rights suspended, the detainees were not informed of charges or taken against them. Their release came ahead of the expiry of the 45-day state of Emergency on Thursday night.

According to the opposition, around 60 people were arrested since the declaration of Emergency on February 5. The Emergency was widely condemned internationally including by the US and India.

Aussie women beat India in T20I Tri-Series first match

March 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Australia dominated with both bat and ball to defeat India by six wickets in the first match of the women’s Twenty20 International (T20I) Tri-Series here on Thursday.

Asked to bat first, India made 152/5 in their 20 overs.

Opener Smriti Mandhana was the highest scorer for the hosts with 67 runs off 41 balls.

Her 72-run stand with Mithali Raj gave the innings a strong platform, but the other Indian batters were not equal to the task.

Anuja Patil scored 35 runs off 21 deliveries lower down the order to help add some late momentum to the Indian innings.

Ashleigh Gardener and Ellyse Perry were the most successful among the Australian bowlers with a couple of wickets each.

Delissa Kimmince also bagged a wicket when she dismissed Patil with the last ball of the 19th over.

In reply, the Australians romped home with 11 deliveries to spare.

They suffered an early scare when opener Alyssa Healy was bowled by veteran Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami in the very first over.

Goswami dealt yet another blow when she bowled Gardener in the third over to leave the visitors in a spot of bother at 29/2.

However, opener Beth Mooney and Elyse Vilani added 79 runs between them to bring the Australian innings back on track.

Mooney was the highest scorer for the visitors with 45 runs off 32 balls before being dismissed by Goswami in the 13th over.

Vilani, who scored 39 runs off 33 balls, followed Mooney back to the pavilion just six deliveries later when she was caught and bowled by Poonam Yadav.

However, the Australians were well in sight of victory by then and skipper Meg Lanning scored 35 runs off 25 balls to finish the job in style.

Goswami finished as the most successful among the Indian bowlers with figures of 3/30.

Brief scores:

India: 152/5 in 20 overs (Smriti Mandhana 67, Anuja Patil 35; Ashleigh Gardener 2/22, Ellyse Perry 2/31) vs Australia: 156/4 in 18.1 overs (Beth Mooney 45, Elyse Vilani 39, Meg Lanning 35; Jhulan Goswami 3/30).
