Hopeful of more India-Bangladesh cricket series in new FTP: BCB

April 24, 2018 by Nasheman

There are chances that India might host Bangladesh more in future with the isuue of a greater number of bilateral series between the two set to be discussed when Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2019-2023 is confirmed here during the on-going five-day International Cricket Council (ICC) meet.

“We are expecting some more matches in the next ICC FTP cycle. There will be more number of India-Bangladesh matches in both India and Bangladesh. We are hopeful,” Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told IANS on Tuesday.

The FTP for 2019-2023 may have already been agreed upon by the ICC full members, but the document that binds the Test-playing nations to adhere to the programme will be submitted to the ICC at its quarterly board meeting here on April 25 and 26.

India have hosted Bangladesh for a bilateral series only once so far, in Hyderabad in 2017 when Virat Kohli and his team pummelled their neighbours by 208 runs.

In total, there have been six India-Bangladesh Test series, including the 2017 five-day affair.

With Bangladesh’s rising status as a cricketing force, Chowdhury felt the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafiqur Rahim should tour India more and in general engage in more bilateral ties with Kohli and his boys.

Asked if he had any agenda to address in the ICC meet, Chowdhury said, “All the issues are specific and general in nature.”

Bangladesh cricketers smashed dressing room glass into smithereens during their narrow victory over Sri Lanka in a Nidahas Trophy Twenty20 tri-series match which helped them reach the final.

The match had descended into chaos as tempers flared due to some umpiring decisions. Drama unfolded when Mustafizur missed two bouncers from Isuru Udana in the final over and was run out. But the Bangladesh players contested the call, saying it was a no-ball due to its height.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was seen in an altercation with an off-field umpire and even waved to call the batsmen back to the pavilion.

However, better sense prevailed as the match continued with Bangladesh going on to register a thrilling win.

Asked about the incident, Chowdhury refused to comment although adding the BCB have taken note of the matter.

BJP workers go violent Because of Yeddyurappa withdraws Vijayendra from Varuna,

April 24, 2018 by Nasheman

After B S Yeddyurappa’s decision on withdrawing the ticket to his son to challenge from Varuna constituency, the furious supporters of Vijayendra went on a strike. Vijayendra was campaigning in the constituency for as long as 15 days and was preparing to document his nomination papers before his father took a U-turn.

Amid the meeting at Nanjangud, senior BJP pioneers including B Sreeramulu and V Srinivasa Prasad, approached the activists to work for Vijayendra. Yeddyurappa, who talked toward the end of the meeting, had everybody astonished by reporting that Vijayendra would not challenge from Varuna electorate. Before long, the furious followers of Vijayendra went insane. They organized a flash protest and demanded Yeddyurappa to offer a ticket to Vijayendra. The party went to a granulating end and the dissenters vented out their outrage by throwing the chairs and other equipment.

Afterward, the party workers organized a protest before the President Hotel, where Yeddyurappa was staying. They even reprimanded former MLA S A Ramadas.

At the point when the situation went out of control, Police Commissioner Dr. Subramanyeswara Rao requested the police staff to utilize lathis to scatter the group. After lathi-charge, the group was scattered.

With world’s largest online recruitment drive, Railways set to ‘save 10 lakh trees’

April 24, 2018 by Nasheman

That some 2.37 crore people have applied as the Indian Railways kicked off the process of filling up over 88,000 posts is clearly indicative of the “jobless growth” the country is experiencing.

But the exercise has a positive side – by taking the recruitment process online, the Railways is estimated to have saved 7.5 crore paper sheets, or the equivalent of “10 lakh trees”, according to a senior Railway Ministry official.

The state-run transporter has replaced bulky, multi-lingual question booklets with online tests for its recruitment process for various positions — ranging from assistant loco pilot to technician, trackman, gateman and pointsman.

“There are 62,000 posts involving track inspection crews and others related to improving safety, while more than 26,000 posts relate to engine drivers and technicians; for these, more than two crore people have applied,” said the senior official, who is involved with the recruitment process.

The examination will be conducted online at about 300 centres and the Railways is currently working out details.

“One applicant generally requires three-four paper sheets of A4 size to write the examination. So with the whole exercise going online, the Railways has saved a significant quantity of paper sheets,” the official said.

Describing the exercise as a “largest online recruitment drive in the world”, the official said “it is not only providing thousands of jobs, the whole process has also resulted in saving about 7.5 lakh paper sheets and 10 lakh trees approximately”.

The fee has been kept at Rs 500 and Rs 250 to keep out non-serious applicants who apply but fail to appear for the test. For general candidates, the examination fee is Rs 500, of which Rs 400 will be returned to the candidate after he or she appears in the examination.

The fee is Rs 250 for SC/ST, women, those who are physically challenged, applicants from economically weaker sections, ex-servicemen — and the full amount will be returned to the candidates after appearing in the examination.

“We are expecting maximum number of applicants to appear and only about 5-10 per cent absent at various centres this time,” the official said.

Railway, which currently employs 1.3 million people, has made special arrangements to ensure that the website does not crash during the examination. The site was earlier able to handle the traffic of the online application process.

Earlier, recruitment examinations used to be conducted manually, but the Railways had to abandon the system and opt for online mode after a few alleged incidents of question paper leaks.

The online test has resulted in substantial saving of time and resources while at the same time bringing transparency in the recruitment process, the official said.

Infosys donates Rs 2.50cr to Kerala hospital

April 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Tech major Infosys has donated Rs 2.50 crore to the Neurosurgery Department of the state-run Medical College hospital, here.

The money was used to install a brand new neurosurgery dedicated operating microscope, replacing a two decade old one.

Speaking to IANS, P. Anil, Head of Department Neurosurgery, said that Infosys answered to a request he had made in 2017.

“I took a chance and I wrote to Infosys if they can come to our help. It was an year back. Soon they responded and after they undertook a brief study of our activities, they decided to help us,” he added.

“In between there were some issues with regards to GST but finally the equipment has been installed. We have already put it to use in the first case, a few days back,” said Anil.

Anil said the new piece of device has come as a huge boon to the patients who mostly come from poor background.

The Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital has the most crowded casualty department with accident cases coming for expert and quick treatment.

Speaking to IANS, Sunil Jose, a top official attached to the Infosys unit here, said their company always has set aside money as part of the corporate social responsibility programme.

“Our studies found out that the department provides yeomen services to accident victims and most of the patients came from the low and middle income category.

“In this microscope project, we started working on it as soon as we got the proposal from the Neurosurgery Department. We felt that they are doing a good job and sanctioned it,” said Jose.

Incidentally this is not the first time that Infosys have helped the hospital. They had built a sky walk connecting the major building after finding out that patients were being moved in stretchers through the road.

Five Indian women boxers assured themselves of medals, two of them also inching closer to qualifying for this year’s Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, after advancing to the semifinals of the Asian Championships here today.

Anamika (51kg) and Astha Pahwa (75kg) were assured of medals and remained in the hunt for booking a berth to the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.

For women, four weight categories — 51kg, 57kg, 75kg and 60kg — will feature at the Games and from the ongoing event, the top-four will make the cut.

While Anamika defeated Mongolia’s Mungunsaran Balsan, Astha Pahwa got the better of China’s Xiyue Wang. Both the boxers won in unanimous verdicts.

However, world championships gold-medallist Sakshi Choudhary (57kg) and Jony (60kg) bowed out of medal and Olympic berth contention. Sakshi was beaten by Thailand’s Panpatchara Somnuek, while Jony lost 2-3 to Kazakhstan’s Mariya Gladkova.

In other weight categories, Lalita (69kg) defeated Vietnam’s Thi Giang Tran, while Divya Pawar (54kg) sailed past China’s Xueqing Cao.

Also advancing to the semifinals were Nitu Ghanghas (48kg), who defeated China’s Zhifei Hu.

The ongoing tournament also features male boxers in nine weight categories. The top four will qualify for the Youth Olympics.

Each country is entitled to a maximum of two women and three men qualifiers and if it ends up achieving more than that, the nation in question will have to pick among the qualifiers.

Expand Use of post birth supporter to Reduce Childbirth Deaths.

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced a series of initiatives aimed at addressing a disturbingly high rate of maternal mortality among black women, who are four times more likely to die in childbirth than white women in New York State, according to a study released last year.

The plan includes a pilot program that will expand Medicaid coverage for doulas, birth coaches who provide women with physical and emotional support during pregnancy and childbirth.

Studies show the calming presence and supportive reinforcement of doulas can help increase birth outcomes and reduce birth complications for the mother and the baby. Still, only a small percentage of women use doulas nationwide.

Hiring a doula — the word means “servant” in Greek — can be expensive. Doulas can charge more birth, and studies show there is little diversity in the doula work force.

Black and low-income women are the most likely to want but not have access to doula services, according to one survey. Medicaid coverage for doula services, state officials hope, would help bridge racial disparities and reduce maternal deaths.

“Maternal mortality should not be a fear anyone in New York should have to face in the 21st century,” Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, said in a statement on Sunday. “We are taking aggressive action to break down barriers that prevent women from getting the prenatal care and information they need.”

The United States’ soaring rates in maternal mortality compared with other wealthy nations have become a cause of concern, but so have the racial disparities, an intractable phenomenon that has not eluded New York. In New York City, the numbers are worse: Black women are 12 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to a city study.

The design of the doula pilot program will be finalized by the state’s Health Department within 45 days, and the program will start immediately thereafter. The state will work with health care professionals to determine how many women will be enrolled in the pilot program, state officials said.

If the doula program is successful, New York would join Minnesota and Oregon as the only states that allow Medicaid reimbursements for doula services.

Providing this service, however, has not always been smooth. In Minnesota, not many Medicaid beneficiaries were aware of doula coverage, and reimbursement rates were low, one study found. Additionally, doulas are not licensed in New York, which might be a challenge because Medicaid programs must pay licensed providers to receive matching federal funds.

You agree to receive occasional updates and special offers for The New York Times’s products and services.
A doula and committee member of the Rochester Area Birth Network, was encouraged by a possible Medicaid expansion, but cautioned that it could change the essence of the doula profession because a doula might be required to work for a provider whose interests are not aligned with the mother’s.

“When doulas get paid by someone other than the mother, it gets to the question of, Who does the doula work for?” Ms. Deutschbein said. “I’d have to see more of the details.”

In fact, New York’s Health Department once shied away from the idea of expanding Medicaid coverage for doulas in 2011, saying it was a “complex issue.”

“We see it as this really critical piece of improving outcomes most especially for most at-risk mothers,” said Élan McAllister, a former doula and a co-founder

“There’s something about having a support person who can bring humanity into a situation and who cares that you survive childbirth and get through it.”

The governor is also creating the Task Force on Maternal Mortality and Disparate Racial Outcomes, which will collaborate with the Maternal Mortality Review Board, a new entity composed of health professionals that will review each maternal death in the state.

The board will count all maternal deaths outside the five boroughs, as New York City began a similar program in December to investigate each maternal death in the city and understand its causes and circumstances.

The state is also expanding prenatal education programs for women and reviewing best practices in hospitals to address hemorrhaging, one of the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths.
