6th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium at Tehran from today

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The 6th edition of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) and Conclave of Chiefs is being hosted by Iran at Tehran from 23 to 25 April. The Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba is leading a four member Indian delegation for the event.
The IONS was conceived by the Indian Navy in 2008. The forum seeks to enhance maritime cooperation among navies of the littoral states of the Indian Ocean Region by providing an open and inclusive forum for discussion on regionally relevant maritime issues that would lead to common understanding on the way ahead.

The inaugural edition of IONS was held in February 2008 at New Delhi, with Indian Navy as the Chair for two years. This was followed by UAE from 2010 – 2012, South Africa from 2012 – 2014, Australia from 2014 – 2016 and Bangladesh from 2016 – 2018.

The IONS Charter of Business was agreed upon by the Conclave of Chiefs and brought into effect in February 2014. A relatively young forum, barely in its 10th year of existence, it has grown into a formidable organisation with 23 members and 09 observers. As the founder nation, India will also be conducting commemorative activities in November 2018 at Kochi, for celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year.

The visit of the Chief of the Naval Staff is also aimed at consolidating bilateral naval relations between India and Iran and to explore new avenues for naval cooperation. Admiral Sunil Lanba will also hold bilateral discussions with the Commander IRI Navy, and other participating ‘Chiefs of Navy/ Head of Maritime Agencies’.

Resentment on omission of Bishu Festival

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Dimasa Public Organisation Nagaland (DPON) has questioned why the state government has excluded its Bishu Festival from the list of proposed mini-Hornbill festivals to be organised at the respective district headquarters of the state to coincide with the tribes festivals announced recently.
“Welcoming the state cabinet decision to hold mini Hornbill festival in district head quarters, the DPON is deeply pained for not covering/including the Bishu Festival which is a post harvest festival of the Dimasa (Kachari) in Dimapur district,” read the communiqué issued by the organisation.
The communiqué pointed that Bishu was a ‘government-recognised’ festival in the state of Nagaland. “It is not understood if it was purposely overlooked by the government to erase the legacy of the tribe. Kachari being one of the recognised indigenous sixteen tribes have concentration in 16 very old villages having the traditional land holding in Dimapur district.

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has announced that the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Nathu La route in Sikkim will resume this year.

Pilgrimage was stopped by China in the aftermath of the military face-off with India last year at Doklam.

However, the announcement was made during talks between Sushma Swaraj and her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday.

Registration for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra organized by Ministry of External Affairs was commenced on 20 February, 2018. Last date for registration was 23 March, 2018.

This year the Yatra is scheduled during the period 08 June to 08 September through two routes.

This route passes through important sites like Narayan Ashram, Patal Bhuvaneshwar etc. Yatris can also see the scenic beauty of Chialekh Valley, or the ‘Om Parvat’ which has the natural occurrence of snow in the shape of ‘Om’ on this mountain.

The route through Nathu La Pass (Sikkim) is motorable and suitable for senior citizens unable to undertake arduous trekking. From Gangtok the route passes through scenic places like Hangu lake, and through the vast landscape of the Tibetan plateau. It is estimated to cost about Rs.2 lakhs person, and duration would be 21 days including 3 days in Delhi for preparatory work. This year 10 batches of 50 pilgrims each are scheduled for this route.

6 herbs to include in your daily diet for a healthier, happier you

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Focusing on health in the hectic and stressful lives that we lead today is becoming difficult. Incorporating relevant herbs in your daily diet is the first step towards a healthier you. Ayurveda texts and modern research say that herbs contain compounds that have beneficial health properties that can help prevent many lifestyle disorders and rejuvenate our bodies.

Dr Shruthi M. Hegde, Ayurveda Expert, The Himalaya Drug Company, suggests incorporating the following herbs in your daily diet to practice preventive wellness and take a concrete step towards maintaining good health.

Tulasi: Popularly known as “The Queen of Herbs”, it yields beneficial results for respiratory wellness. It has compounds which are known to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and expectorant properties. Tulsi helps modulate healthy immune response and supports early recovery from respiratory conditions. Use it to get relief from cough and cold, especially during seasonal changes, when your body is particularly prone to such respiratory ailments.

Ashvagandha: This herb contains rejuvenating properties, and being an adaptogen, helps cope with stress, reduces harmful effects of long-term stress on the body, and promotes healthy sleep. This makes it particularly useful in our stressful lives, where good work-life balance is often difficult to maintain.

Triphala: It’s difficult to always consume healthy and hygienically prepared food in our hectic lifestyle, making digestive issues a common problem. Triphala helps promote overall digestive wellness in a number of ways. It acts as an effective colon cleanser, regularises normal bowel movements, and aids healthy digestion.

Neem: This helps fight acne by inhibiting the bacteria that causes acne growth. The herb helps promote skin wellness, which becomes even more important during summer, when the skin is more prone to acne breakouts and inflammation. It helps rejuvenate your skin, and prevents the recurrence of acne and blemishes.

Haridra: This herb contains beneficial inflammation-relieving properties. It boosts cell health through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping improve overall health. This makes it a potent tool in your preventive wellness toolkit, helping you overcome a number of health problems before they even have a chance to make an appearance

Guduchi: This herb supports the immune system and helps fight against infections by increasing the effectiveness of disease-fighting white blood cells. Including this herb in your daily diet will help increase your body’s resistance to stress and illness.

Make a commitment to getting healthier and staying fit by including these health-boosting herbs in your daily diet. Regular usage of these herbs in addition to other activities such as exercising and consuming a balanced diet will lead to a healthier, happier you.

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The youth, identified as Wamiq Aijaz was brought to a hospital for treatment. “He has sustained pellet injuries,” doctors attending to him, said.

Punjab finally waking up to decibel danger

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Noisy wedding celebrations, high-pitched religious fervor and other ear-splitting nocturnal festivities have become a nightmare for peace-loving citizens of Punjab. Finally, the state’s lawmakers and authorities seem to be waking up to the pervasive civic nuisance.

A recent study by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to measure the noise level due to loudspeakers used in religious places in villages across the state has confirmed that the noise pollution was at more than the permissible limits.

The study, conducted for the first time in the agrarian state, found that the decibel level in Punjab’s rural areas was higher during night time (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.).

“Noise monitoring was carried out at boundary walls at 50 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres distance from religious places. It was found that the noise level at the boundary wall was 60-88dB (decibel) at 50 metres, 53-87dB at 100 metres and 50-72dB at 200 metres, which was well above the permissible limit of 45dB,” PPCB Chairman Kahan Singh Pannu said.

The study pointed out that higher values of noise pollution in villages could have an adverse effect on human health. This could lead to fatigue of hearing or auditory organs, deafness, annoyance, hypertension, change of the rate of heart beat, vertigo effects and cardiovascular effects.

Pannu said the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, had recently issued a directive asking all gurdwaras to keep the volume of speakers within permissible limits.

In most villages in Punjab, there is at least one gurdwara (Sikh shrine or temple). Some villages have two or even more.

The PPCB Chairman has appealed to the management committees of gurdwaras, temples and mosques to keep the noise pollution under control.

(IANS)

Punjab’s lawmakers too are now all ears over the growing noise menace.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told the state assembly last month that the government will soon convene an all-party meeting to deliberate on ways to check the menace.

Expressing concern over the implications of noise pollution, Amarinder Singh admitted that norms on noise levels were being blatantly flouted, especially in the case of DJs (disc jockeys) at social functions, resulting in inconvenience and disturbance to people, particularly students preparing for examinations.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Aman Arora, who raised the noise pollution issue in the assembly last month, said the problem needed immediate attention and warranted serious discussion.

Amarinder Singh told the House: “My government will get inputs from the members of various political parties for evolving a consensus on finding a permanent solution to the problem.”

Though provisions under the Noise Pollution Regulation and Control Rules, 2000, issued by the Government of India, and the Punjab Instruments Control of Noises Act, 1956, clearly provide directions on permissible limits and timings for use of loudspeakers, these are flouted with impunity and authorities, especially the police, in the districts, are not implementing the rules strictly.

The Supreme Court has also imposed a ban on playing of loud music and use of loudspeakers from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

“We get guests from abroad and other places across the country. At night, there is too much noise from nearby marriage palaces. No one follows the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. ban directive. Loud music is played till 2 a.m.

“The loudspeakers from nearby religious places wake up people around 4 a.m. There is no check on anyone,” a leading entrepreneur who runs a farmstay in rural Punjab told IANS.

The problem is more acute in rural areas compared to cities and towns as there is better regulation in the latter.

Till the time local authorities in the districts enforce the ban on loudspeakers effectively during night hours, people in Punjab’s hinterland will continue to suffer noisy nights.

Family of dead Latvian tourist demands justice

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The family of a Latvian female tourist whose body was found near Kovalam in Kerala on Monday demanded a fair probe into her death which they claimed was not a suicide.

The body of Liga Skromane, 33, who went missing last month from here, was found in a highly decomposed state on Friday. Her sister Ilzie identified the body.

Ilzie told the media: “I want justice for my sister. We are happy that a special team of police has been appointed to probe the case. We want to know what happened to her.”

Andrew, Liga’s partner, thanked the people of Kerala for their love and support. “The police here should now take this seriously as it should never happen to anyone.

“What we want to ask of the people of the locality where the body was found is to come forward and tell us if they saw anything. This was no suicide,” he said.

On Monday, the Kerala government announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the victim’s family.

Kerala Police chief Loknath Behra said the probe had now become a matter of challenge.

“A foreigner has died in our state and we will ensure that the case is solved,” he said.

Liga and Ilzie came to Kerala for ayurvedic treatment at a facility on the outskirts of Trivandrum.

She went missing on March 14 and was last reported to have taken an auto-rickshaw ride to Kovalam. She was not carrying a passport or mobile phone with her.
