Remembering Dr. Rajkumar on his 12th death anniversary

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

A huge number of fans assembled at Kanteerava Studios premises on Thursday to pay tributes to the late actor Dr Rajkumar on his twelfth death anniversary.

The Kanteerava Studios authorities kept the program low key as the because of the moral code of conduct of elections.

The program was carried out in a simple way with just flower decorations to the memorial and there were no special lunch arrangements for fans. The fans had started coming at 9 am.

On the event, Rajkumar’s son Shivarajkumar told the media that he would not battle in the elections as he is occupied in film shooting.

Shivarajkumar also said that his significant other Geetha would campaign. The actor offered financial help to a man who had come from Hosadurga (Chitradurga area) looking for help for treating his ailing child.

‘No matter how influential accused is, he will not be spared’: CM Yogi on Unnao rape

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday vowed to act against the detained BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in Unnao district.
Yogi said, “Investigation has been handed over to the CBI. I believe the CBI would have arrested the MLA also. Our government will not compromise on this, no matter how influential the accused is, he will not be spared.”

Earlier in the day, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday detained BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar who has been accused with the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh, an official said. Sengar, an MLA from Bangarmau seat in Unnao district, is being questioned at the CBI headquarters here. The horrific crimes in Kathua and Unnao have led to massive outrage across the country with protests being organised in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh and other places. The four-time lawmaker and his brothers allegedly gang-raped the girl in Unnao – who attempted suicide outside Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence in Lucknow on Sunday – and are also accused in the custodial death of the victim’s father. Her father was held by the UP police later that day. Pappu Singh, aged around 50, was allegedly roughed up by Senger’s brother Atul Singh and his aides following which he died.

Is BJP trying to add ‘terror angle’ to Karnataka polls by calling Siddaramaiah Laden and pro-jihadi?

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

With each passing day, the upcoming Karnataka Assembly election 2018 is becoming nastier. While the incumbent Congress is trying its best to grab power once again in the southern state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is attempting to ouster the ruling party to find itself one step closer to Congress-mukt Bharat. Thus both the political opponents are engaged in allegations and counter-allegations to thwart each other’s efforts to grab power in Karnataka. The latest allegation, courtesy the BJP, that Congress chief minister Siddaramaiah has to face is that he is like now-dead al-Qaeda founder terrorist, Osama bin Laden.

The Karnataka CM has been compared with the dreaded terrorist behind the 9/11 attacks in the United States (US) after he said that the Congress would defeat the likes of Union minister Anant Kumar Hegde who professes the idea of changing the Constitution.
“The issues before the #KarnatakaElection2018 are Constitutional democracy & its survival, development with social justice & fulfilling the aspirations of our youth. We will defeat Anant Kumar Hegde & his likes who have declared that BJP is in power to change the #Constitution,” tweeted Siddaramaiah.
In reply to the Karnataka CM’s tweet, the BJP ended up calling him Laden. “CM Sir, come on! Congress speaking of protecting Constitution is akin to Osama Bin Laden speaking for world peace! You may keep chanting about need to protect Constitution, but people won’t forget the history of utter disregard shown to constitutional values by Congress,” tweeted the BJP.
This is not the first time that the BJP has used derogatory words against the incumbent CM. Earlier the saffron party had called Siddaramaiah pro-Jihadi. “Our karyakartas get constant phone calls from their families asking them about their safety. Hindus have understood that this govt will not protect them. Fear of annihilation grips every Hindu household in Karavali. Pro jihadi Siddu must go. We must create #JihadiMuktaKarnataka,” the BJP tweeted. In March, the Election Commission (EC) announced the date for the polls in Karnataka. While the voting will take place on May 12, the counting of votes will be held on May 15. The state Assembly has 224 seats.

Will submit to law: Navjot Singh Sidhu after Punjab govt supports his conviction in road rage case

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has said he will submit to the law on his 1988 road rage case. His comment came after the Punjab government, of which he is a part, told the Supreme Court that it supported his conviction in the case.

“I don’t have any reactions. You submit to the majesty of the law,” Sidhu was quoted as saying, by news agency.

Punjab government counsel Sanram Singh Saron had on Thursday told the top court that it supported the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s conviction and the three-year sentence it had handed to the cricketer-turned-politician. Saron also told the court that there was no evidence to support the judgement of the trial court to conclude that the victim had died of cardiac arrest. The Punjab government lawyer had also categorically stated that Sidhu’s statement to the court denying his involvement was false.

Sidhu’s lawyer, RS Cheema, is set to offer rebuttal to the Punjab government’s contentions on April 17.

The prosecution maintains that Sidhu and a friend were present in a car parked near Sheranwala Gate Crossing on December 27, 1988. Gurnam Singh and two others were going to bank. As they reached Sheranwala Gate Crossing, Gurnam Singh found Sidhu’s car blocking the way, and called for the car to be moved so he could drive through. A heated exchange took place, in which Sidhu allegedly fled dealt one blow to Gurnam Singh, who was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Sidhu had been acquitted of the murder charges of Gurnam Singh by a trial court in September 1999, saying the 65-year-old had died of a heart attack and not brain haemorrhage. However, the High Court in 2006 reversed the verdict and held Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The high court sentenced them to three-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

In 2007, the Supreme Court stayed the conviction of Sidhu and Sandhu in the case, paving the way for him to contest the by-poll for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

Suprem Court grants bail to life convict in serial church blasts cases on medical grounds

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to a convict who was sentenced to a life time imprisonment for being involved in a series of blast in various churches of Karnataka in 2000. He was given bail on medical ground.

A bench of Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao depended upon a medical report outfitted by Additional Advocate General Devadatt Kamat, affirming that the applicant, Abdul Rehman Sait was suffering from different ailments and was undergoing treatment in Central Prison Hospital, Belagavi.

The seat said “It shows up from the report that the candidate is undergoing treatment for different illnesses. This reality has likewise been affirmed,”

“As the applicant isn’t in a good medical condition, we esteem it fit and legitimate to release Abdul Rehman Sait, on bail, in all the four cases, on outfitting sufficient security as per the general inclination of the trial court,” the seat included.

The court passed its request, in the wake of hearing backer Kamini Jaiswal for the benefit of the candidate and Kamat for the state government.

On April 10, the court had requested that the Karnataka government check his medical condition as he looked for bail battling that he has been in prison for around 18 years in the wake of having been indicted and granted life detainment for blasts at St Ann’s Church, Kalaburagi, St Peter and Paul church in Bengaluru and St John Luthern Church in Hubballi and accidental blast at Minerva Mills in Bengaluru.

Why PM Modi’s silence is deafening: Kathua, Unnao rape cases

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

When the most eloquent man in the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his oratory skills, goes silent on two of the most horrendous rape cases the nation has witnessed in the recent times, it speaks volumes about the total collapse of administration in the country. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers in Jammu and Kashmir openly supported the accused in the Kathua rape case, in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao incident, the alleged perpetrator of the crime is n

In spite of the direct involvement of BJP and right-wing men in both the cases where human bestiality will put even animals to shame, Modi on Thursday was seen in the high-profile defence expo in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Modi spoke on various issues in the southern city, but he remained mum on the rape cases when protesters on roads and social media soldiers demanded answers from him.
The unfortunate unfolding of both the rape cases–one, where an 8-year-old girl in Jammu’s Kathua was kidnapped, drugged, gang-raped and killed to instill fear in people belonging to the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community by eight men in January, and the second, in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, where a 16-year-old girl was raped last year by the BJP MLA but the authorities failed to give her justice till date–can’t be brushed under the carpet. The agony of the teenager in Uttar Pradesh has been further aggravated, after the girl’s father died in the police custody because of the brutal physical assault on him by the accused MLA’s brother. Both the crimes showcase how rape is used as a tool to silence people belonging to the minority community (in the Kathua incident) and how powerful people like Sengar (in Unnao case) can move scot-free even after an FIR was registered against him.

The two shameful cases will surely be remembered in the future where power and politics joined hands to kill the justice system which is otherwise accountable to women/girls. It is a well-known fact that the PM remains silent on all unpleasant episodes that have hit the country in the last four years of the BJP government. Modi spoke only to woo young voters before their board exams, but he remained stoically silent when CBSE question papers were leaked threatening to damage the career of lakhs of children.
Similarly, Modi spoke on the birth anniversaries of Dalit icons but remained quiet when Dalits were killed during the nationwide protests to oppose the alleged dilution of the SC/ST act recently. Again, Modi always ‘stands tall’ to talk about his pet project, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the girl child, educate the girl child) during public events. Now, when the nation is asking him to at least condemn the heinous crimes against the minors, the PM seems to be too detached from the ground reality. The PM’s silence is not his lack of awareness about the happenings in the nation. Like all, Modi knows the direct involvement of his own party colleagues and their continuous attempts to subvert the justice system in both the cases. By turning his back on crimes against women/girls, Modi in a way gives an impression about his government’s tactical support to the accused. Like Modi, till yesterday,
most of his cabinet ministers and opposition leaders were silent over the rape cases. Till now, not a single BJP woman minister in the Modi cabinet has spoken about the horrific crimes against the humanity. Perhaps, for them saving their ministerial berths by avoiding any sort of confrontation with their party is more important than speaking on behalf of the country’s women. It is only Union minister VK Singh who condemned the rape and killing of Kathua girl Asifa on Thursday. Congress president Rahul Gandhi was also silent before he was nudged on social media to break his maun vrat (vow of silence) too. On Thursday,
Rahul tweeted and lead a midnight candlelight march to protest crimes against women in the national capital. Next time when Modi will speak during a well-organised PR event on women, India’s betis won’t be able to bear his words, as the chowkidar has not only failed to ensure their safety but betrayed them when they needed him the most. On Friday too, a shell-shocked nation is talking about Kathua and Unnao rape cases. Here we bring you some tweets expressing outrage over the denial of justice to two minors:

‘We will fight for Asifa’s justice,’ says Kamal Haasan : Kathua rape case

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

About the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua, actor turned politician Kamal Haasan on Friday tweeted demanding justice for Asifa.

Does it have to be ur own daughter for you to understand? She could’ve been mine. I feel angry as a man, father and a citizen fr failing Asifa. I m sorry my child v didn’t make this country safe enough forr YOU. I’ll fight fOr justice at least fr future kids like YOU. we mourn u & won’t forget u,” he tweeted.
The rape-and-murder of the nomadic Muslim Bakerwal community girl – whose name is also spelt ‘Asifa’ – has created a controversy after lawyers in Jammu tried to prevent the Crime Branch from filing a chargesheet in the case. Meanwhile, on Thursday night, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi led a midnight march to the India Gate to protest the Kathua and Unnao minor rape cases and said it’s time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to walk the talk on ‘beti bachao’ (save the girl child).

Amid slogans against the BJP and the Prime Minister during the march, Gandhi said the women of the country are afraid to go out today and the government must ensure their safety.

Gandhi was joined by his sister Priyanka and her husband Robert Vadra as also their children, besides scores of Congress leaders, party workers and others, who were seen shouting slogans, carrying candles and some even placards against the BJP governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir while demanding urgent action against the perpetrators of two heinous gang rapes — one in Unnao (UP) and the other in Kathua (J&K). A Special Investigation Team, formed to probe the incident, has arrested eight people, including two Special Police Officers (SPOs) and a head constable, who was charged with destroying evidence. Siddaramaiah and Parameshwar to contest only one MLA seat

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress high command on Thursday shot down the proposal of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwar to contest from two seats in the May 12 Assembly elections.

With growing clamour among many leaders to contest from two segments, the party has decided to reject all proposals and will give an opportunity to other leaders to contest the elections, top sources in the Congress leaderhsip told Deccan Herald.

“It is up to Siddaramaiah to choose between Chamundeshwari in Mysuru district or Badami in Bagalkot district from where he wanted to contest. Though the chief minister earlier showed an inclination towards Chamundeshwari, the party asked him to finalise his choice by Friday morning before the scheduled Central Election Committee meeting.

Apprehending that the chief minister may face a strong fight at Chamundeshwari, where a sizable number of voters belong to the Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities, the party top brass advised him to opt for a safe seat like Badami in Bagalkot district as the constituency has a large number of Kuruba community voters, the caste to which Siddaramaiah belongs.

However, apart from Badami, Siddaramaiah planned to contest from Chamundeshwari too as it is close to Varuna segment from where his doctor son Yathindra is trying for a ticket. The chief minister believes that contesting from Chamundeshwari would also help his son, a political greenhorn, to win the elections.

However, Parameshwar agreed to contest only from Koratagere from where he lost in the 2013 Assembly elections and decided to drop his plan to file his nomination from Pulakeshinagar, in Bengaluru. The party will decide whether to field JD(S) rebel and sitting MLA Akhanda Srinivasmurthy or former Congress MLA Prasanna Kumar from Pulakeshinagar, sources said.

“If we allow Siddaramaiah to contest from two seats, we will have to oblige Parameshwara too. If we allow both these leaders, others will also start making similar demands. Besides, allowing top leaders to contest from two seats will give ammunition to political opponents to attack the ruling party saying that their leaders are on the backfoot in the elections,” sources added.

The chief minister, who arrived from Bengaluru at Delhi in the evening, held a meeting with the party screening committee headed by Madhusudhan Mistry. The party’s leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge was also present at the meeting.

Men need to understand the importance of empowering women: Priyanka

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Priyanka Chopra says women have the “superpower” to balance career with family and it is high time men understood that their aspirations are equally important. The 35-year-old actor, who entered the film industry soon after winning the Miss World title at the age of 18, credits her parents, especially her father, for understanding her dreams and helping her achieve them.

“I came from a family where everyone questioned my decision to become an actor. There was a big debate in my house. But my parents, especially my father said, ‘I am standing by her in whatever she wants to do. I will make sure nothing wrong happens to her.’ He kept his promise. He was with me always till I was 23. He used to be my manager. I had the support of my father,” Priyanka told in an interview.

“The men in the world need to understand that as soon as you empower a woman, as soon as you give her the opportunity to be her best, she can handle both family and career. I feel boys can’t tackle both. Look at the medals at Commonwealth Games, most of them have been won by women because they had this opportunity,” she says. The actor believes society needs to be more open towards the idea of women being ambitious. She says people have still not warmed up to the idea of a career-oriented woman.

“Girls being ambitious is still like… ‘haw kitni ambitious hai!’ (she is so ambitious!). Women have the superpower where they can manage their family and their ambition together. Just because a woman is working, it does not mean she won’t be able to take care of her family. My mother was a working woman. She is double MD. She raised two children, who seem to be alright. We need to separate the two things,” she says.

Priyanka, who has always been upfront about her ideas on issues pertaining to gender equality and women’s health, says being an entertainer gives her a platform to spread awareness about various social causes. “I take my social responsibility very seriously. I know I am an influencer. I know because of being an entertainer, I have the ears of people. They will listen to me. I like to use the platform to be able to make a change. I know what my life would have ended up being had my parents not taught me to be the way I am. So, I like to take that opportunity, especially when I believe in a cause.”

The actor, however, does not think working for social welfare is solely a celebrity’s job. She believes promoting a cause is a personal decision and celebrities should not be expected to behave like superheroes. “So many people ask me ‘you are celebrity, what do you do for the world?’ People never ask themselves what they have done. As an entertainer, it is my job to entertain people and I am doing it. And I don’t understand why celebrities are expected to do everything and solve world problems. I am doing this because I want to.

“I am a strong believer that each one of us needs to be socially responsible. But it is an individual’s decision. For me, it is important that I will fly down in the middle of my shoot just for 12 hours. But everybody can’t be expected to have the same standard. And I do think, we tend to sometimes think that actors should be perfect, but we are not… We are humans,” says Priyanka.

Priyanka, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, flew down to Delhi from Dublin, Ireland to formally introduce the 2018 Partners’ Forum, a platform which works towards improving the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents. The actor says despite being a public figure, she does not censor her opinions to fit the popular narrative which sometimes lands her in trouble.

“… I am logical, but not careful. That is why I get into trouble. But I speak from my heart and I know I don’t have any malice. I know there are people out there who are waiting with a magnifying glass to see if I speak something wrong. I always hope that I don’t say something wrong and if I say I am not shy to apologise. But if I am not wrong, I will defend myself,” she says.

Lingayats demand Congress tickets in 40 constituencies

April 13, 2018 by Nasheman

The issue of giving minority religion status to Lingayat, which is expected to play an important role in deciding the fortunes of political parties, has begun to gain prominence in the issue of allotment of Congress tickets too. It is gathered that people falling under Lingayat community have demanded tickets in 40 constituencies for their candidates, while Veerashaiva sect has been pitching for 20 tickets. These demands have put chief minister, Siddaramaiah, in a bind and the Congress high command, which was expecting to encash this issue to its advantage, too is facing predicament on this matter, it is learnt.

The chief minister, who was expecting to win over the loyalty of Lingayat community by recommending to give religious minority status to them by ignoring Veerashaivas, finds himself mired in new problems on account of the above demand.

Lingayats have been pointing out that they have the potential to influence the results in 110 assembly constituencies in the state. Therefore, they say their demand for 40 seats is just. As per information, Lingayat Mahasabha and Veerashaiva leaders have been exerting pressure to consider fielding of their candidates in various constituencies in north Karnataka, central Karnataka, and Old Mysore area. Lingayats have also demanded tickets in four constituencies in the city, and Virajpete constituency in Kodagu district, it is said. Veerashaiva community also believes that it has clout in at least 20 constituencies and hence wants to field its own members in these constituencies.

In 2013 election, Congress had fielded 44 Lingayat candidates, out of which 29 had come out victorious. The current perception that Lingayat community will be supporting Congress this time with added vigour as the Congress government has recommended their case for minority religion tag, has provided thrust to the community’s demand. The members of this community have been arguing that issuing tickets to Lingayats will brighten chances of Congress candidates.

General Secretary of Lingayat Mahasabha, J B Patil, said that the community members have urged the chief minister to allot more seats to members from their community. He said that it has been decided to give priority to even backward classes within the community when choosing candidates.
