Four seniors leaders join BJP amid turmoil, several unhappy

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Independent MLA, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, and former JD(S) legislator, Mallikarjun Khuba, former union minister, Basavaraja Patil Anwari, and former minister, Nagappa Saloni, crossed over to BJP on Wednesday April 4. However, this defection has caused heartburn in the party as dissent against admission of Yatnal and Khuba in particular into BJP has been brewing and gaining alarming proportions.

Supporters of former minister, Appu Pattanashetti, who is an aspirant for BJP ticket from Vijayapura this time, have been holding a strong protest against Yatnal’s admission into the party. One of the supporters of Pattanashetti even consumed poison and fell ill. In addition, BJP city corporators at Vijayapura gave went to their anger by locking the door of the party in the city.
At the same time, there is resentment against admitting former Basavakalyana MLA, Mallikarjun Khuba, into BJP. Local leaders held protest in front of the BJP office at Basavakalyana on Wednesday, urging the leadership not to allow Khuba to join BJP at any cost. The protesters said that they have been fighting against Khuba since the last two decades and that they can not suddenly change their stance and support him. They also said that even if the leader is given entry into the party, he should not be given ticket to fight the coming election.

Protests and frictions have also been noticed in Vijayapura district against A S Patil Nadahalli who was allowed to cross over to BJP recently, and at Kalaburagi against Malikayya Guttedar. Several ticket aspirants from the party have also warned of deserting the party. A number of of them are cozying up to JD(S), thus making BJP leaders jittery.

In spite of widespread opposition within the party against the above four leaders, state BJP president, B S Yeddyurappa, welcomed them into the party at the state office of the party here by handing them party flags on Wednesday, in the presence of former minister, V Somanna, MLAs, Sanganna Karadi, Manappa Vajjal, and other leaders. Yeddyurappa said that Malikayya Guttedar, who has left Congress, will join BJP along with some more Congress MLAs on April 8 or 9. He said that some MLAs of JD(S) are in contact with him, and felt that addition of Yatnal, Khuba, and two others are boosted the chances of his party. Yatnal said that he would be fighting assembly election from Vijayapura constituency and that he would be filing nomination papers on Basava Jayanti day. He said that those who are against his entry into BJP were the ones who never worked for the party, and because of whom the party faced debacle in zilla and taluk panchayat elections.

Tamil Nadu bandh over Cauvery dispute: Normal life hit, Opposition leaders detained

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader TTV Dhinakaran was detained by Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday after he and his supporters tried to gherao the Trichy airport.

They were demanding that the Central government form a Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) forthwith, without further delay as per the Supreme Court order.

On February 16, the apex court asked the Centre to form the CMB to implement a formula for sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

In the ruling, the top court had reduced Tamil Nadu’s share in the Cauvery water to 177.25 thousand million cubic feet.

On March 15, the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution that urged the Centre to constitute the CMB and the CWRC.

Killing of Palestinians in Gaza ‘unlawful, calculated’

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

No evidence that any Palestinians seriously threatened Israeli soldiers in Gaza protests, Human Rights Watch says.

by Al Jazeera

The Israeli army’s killing of more than a dozen Palestinians who were demonstrating along the Gaza Strip’s eastern border on Friday was unlawful and calculated, according to a new Human Rights Watch (HRW) report.

“The Israeli government presented no evidence that rock-throwing and other violence by some demonstrators seriously threatened Israeli soldiers across the border fence,” the report, released on Tuesday, said.

Pointing out that senior Israeli officials had “unlawfully” called for the use of live ammunition before and after the protests, HRW said: “the high number of deaths and injuries was the foreseeable consequence of granting soldiers leeway to use lethal force outside of life-threatening situations in violation of international norms.”

On Friday, the Israeli army killed 17 Palestinians in mass demonstrations calling for the right of return for Palestinian refugees to the homes and villages by from which they were driven out by Zionist armed groups in 1948. At least 1,500 others were wounded, while one Palestinian succumbed to his wounds on Monday.

The death toll is expected to rise owing to the high number of injuries and the lack of medical supplies in the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli land, sea and air blockade for more than a decade.

Prior to the demonstrations, the Israeli army announced it had deployed more than 100 snipers with permission to fire.

Palestinian rights group Adalah said the Israeli army on Saturday “accidentally” took responsibility for the attacks on Palestinian protesters, before deleting a post from their official Twitter page.

“Yesterday we saw 30,000 people; we arrived prepared and with precise reinforcements. Nothing was carried out uncontrolled; everything was accurate and measured, and we know where every bullet landed,” a screenshot of the post, shared by Adalah, read.

‘No evidence of firearms’
Protesters in Gaza gathered in five different spots along the border, originally positioned about 700 metres away from a highly fortified fence marking the Gaza-Israel border.

Israeli forces responded with live fire, tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets, according to the Palestinian ministry of health.

Multiple videos appear to show Palestinians being shot while not posing an immediate threat.

“Human Rights Watch could find no evidence of any protester using firearms or any IDF claim of threatened firearm use at the demonstrations,” the report said.

The Israeli use of deadly force has drawn international condemnation; the United Nations and rights groups have called for an independent investigation into the killings.

But the Israeli minister for security has said “there is no reason” for Israel to cooperate with a UN inquiry into army actions.

On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the army, saying his troops were successful “guarding the country’s borders” and allowing “Israeli citizens to celebrate the [Passover] holiday peacefully”.

The protests were planned on the 42nd commemoration of Land Day, which took place on March 30, 1976, when six unarmed Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed by Israeli forces during protests against the Israeli government’s decision to expropriate massive tracts of Palestinian-owned land.

Eric Goldstein, the deputy Middle East director at HRW, said: “Praising the army’s handling of the March 30 events and saying there shall be no inquiry into how Israeli soldiers gunned down 14 protesters across a fence says much about how cheaply Israeli authorities view the lives of Palestinians in Gaza.”

PM Modi withdraws order threatening scribes over fake news

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: After widespread criticism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday withdrew within hours his government’s order that threatened to take away the accreditation of journalists found propagating fake news.

“(The) Prime Minister has directed that the press release regarding fake news be withdrawn and the matter should only be addressed in the Press Council of India,” an official source said.

The order issued on Monday night warned that journalists would be denied access to the government even on mere accusations of spreading fake news and could lose their accreditation for a limited period or permanently.

Journalists and opposition parties took a serious note of the order issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and described the guidelines as an attack on press freedom.

Fake news: Any check on media equal to killing democracy, says Sheila Dixit

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit questioned the Central government’s new guidelines to check the fake news.

“What is the definition of fake news? In a democratic system, any kind of restrictions on the media is equal to killing democracy” she said.
She added “Today, we only get to see the news that is pro-govt. India has always believed in a free media and that should continue.”

In an effort to check the spread of fake news in electronic and print media, the government on Monday came out with new guidelines for issuing and withdrawing Press Information Bureau accreditation to journalists.

Under the new guidelines, any complaints regarding fake news will be referred to the Press Council of India (PCI) for print media and to the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) in case of electronic media.

The two bodies will determine whether the news is fake or not.

The determination is expected to be completed within 15 days. Once the complaint is registered for determination of fake news, the correspondent or journalist whoever created or propagated the fake news will, if accredited, have the accreditation suspended till such time the determination regarding the fake news is made by the regulating agencies mentioned above.

The Accreditation Committee of the PIB, which consists of representatives of both PCI and NBA, will be reached out for validating the accreditation request of any news media agency.

“While any confirmation of publication or telecast of fake news having been confirmed by any of these agencies, the accreditation shall be suspended for a period of six months in the first violation and for one year in the case of second violation and in the event of third violation it would be cancelled permanently,” the release added.

The press release further justified the amendment by claiming, “While examining the requests seeking accreditation, the regulatory agencies will examine whether the `Norms of Journalistic Conduct’ and `Code of Ethics and Broadcasting Standards’ prescribed by the PCI and NBA respectively are adhered to by the journalists as part of their functioning. It would be obligatory for journalists to abide by these guidelines”.

S M Krishna who left Congress citing shoddy treatment upset with BJP

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and external affairs minister S M Krishna left the Congress and joined the BJP a year ago. Many political observers opined that the seasoned politician would be given a significant job by the BJP making use of his vast experience.

But the things seem to stand still for one of the tallest political figures in the Indian politics, as the BJP is in mood to give any top post in the party. The BJP too is giving the same treatment to him as the Congress, which he alleged as one of the reasons for his decision to leave the grand old party.

Reports say that S M Krishna is leading a quiet life in his residence in Bengaluru with his books and tennis.
Krishna was last seen with the BJP leaders during ‘Parivarthana Yatre’. As per reports, he is expecting a ticket for his daughter Shambhavi from Maddur constituency in Mandya or Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru.

The 85-year-old politician has often said that he was not unhappy with the BJP, but he has not answered why he kept himself away from attending the party events, unlike many BJP bigwigs at the national level, especially when the assembly elections are due in a month. Though both the BJP and he has denied reports of being ignored in the party, it is yet to be decided whether the High Command will honour his wish of a ticket to his daughter.

Karnataka assembly polls will be held on May 12 and the results will be out on May 15.

Swaraj India led by Yogendra Yadav to contest in Karnataka polls

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Swaraj India, led by psephologist-turned-politician Yogendra Yadav, would contest in a dozen seats in the May 12 Karnataka Assembly election, said an official on Tuesday.

“As a new and young party, we are making a modest beginning to contest in a dozen assembly constituencies in the state to usher in probity, transparency and accountability in electoral politics,” Swaraj India Spokesman

Releasing the first list of candidates, Yadav said the party would contest two seats in Mandya district, one each in Bengaluru, Chamarajanagara, Chitradurga and Yadgir districts.
The contestants are Darshan Puttannaiah from Melukote and S.H. Linge Gowda from Maddur in Mandya, K.P. Bhoothaiah from Challakere in Chitradurga, S. Srikantaswamy from Hanur in Charamajanagar, Ramesh Chandra from Mahadevapura in Bengaluru and Vaijanath Patil from Yadgir in the state’s northwest area.

The 18-month-old party will declare the remaining six or more candidates in the ensuing days, as the Election Commission will notify the Assembly election on April 17, with April 25 the last date for submitting names and April 27 for withdrawal in the single-phase poll. The counting of votes is on May 15.

Deploring the ideological and political vacuum in the country, Yadav told about 200 members of the party’s state unit that there was no political force in the country to strengthen democracy, diversity and development.

The party’s state unit coordinator Devanoor Mahadeva said the country was facing a strange situation due to global warming.

“This is not a political issue for polls but the absurd development was causing inequality, new diseases and challenges across the country,” he said.

Darshan Puttannaiah is the son of the state’s farmer leader late K.S. Puttananaiah, who was a member of the outgoing state assembly. He represented the Karnataka Sarvodaya Paksha which merged with Swaraj India in March 2017.

Rahul targets Piyush Goyal for ‘Shirdi ka Chamatkar’

April 3, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Keeping up his offensive against the BJP, Congress president Rahul Gandhi today targeted Union minister Piyush Goyal for his alleged links to the promoter of a company in default of Rs 650 crore.

Gandhi used the hashtag PiyushGhotala in his tweet, which also mentioned BJP president Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s son Shaurya Doval and fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi.

After Shah-Zada’s interesting tales, Shaurya-Gaatha’ and Chhote Modi”s’ big exploits, BJP presents Shirdi ka Chamatkar’, Gandhi said on Twitter.

He attached a media report alleging that the promoter of a company, which had Shirdi in its name and was in default of Rs 650 crore, has ties with Goyal, the union minister for railways and coal.

The Congress chief has earlier attacked Jay Shah over the sudden increase in the turnover of his company and Shaurya Doval for “conflict of interest” for allegedly getting funds for the “India Foundation”, which is run by him and has several union ministers and top BJP leaders on its board.

Gandhi and the Congress have dubbed Nirav Modi, an accused in the multi-crore fraud involving PNB, ‘Chhota Modi’.

The Congress chief has launched an offensive against the BJP and its leaders over allegations of graft while seeking to puncture the claim that there is no corruption in Narendra Modi-led government.
