World leaders call for restraint after Israeli raids in Syria

May 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Israeli air strikes against what it says were Iranian targets in Syria draw global calls to avoid further escalation.
The United Nations, Russia, France, Germany and Britain have urged Israel and Iran to avoid any further escalation after Israel carried out air raids against what it said were Iranian targets in Syria.

Israel said the bombardment on Thursday was in retaliation for Iranian rocket fire on its positions in the occupied Golan Heights. There were no Israeli casualties.

Iran made no comment about the rocket fire.

The raids come after weeks of rising tensions and followed US President Donald Trump’s decision on Tuesday to withdraw from the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a move Israel had long advocated.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for an “immediate halt to all hostile acts” in a statement.

He urged the Security Council to remain actively aware of the situation and “shoulder its responsibilities” under the UN Charter.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was also quick to call for restraint. He said the Israeli raids were “very alarming development” and called on both Israel and Iran to avoid provoking each other.

All issues “should be solved through dialogue”, he added.

Both Russia and Iran have intervened in war-torn Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel has long warned it will not accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in Syria.

In recent years, it has been suspected of carrying out air strikes on installations manned by Syrian, Iranian, and allied Lebanese fighters across Syria.

What are the ramifications of US exiting Iran nuclear deal?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday Iran had “crossed a red line” and the resulting bombardment “was a consequence”.

‘Provocative attack’
Iran does not want “new tensions” in the Middle East, President Hassan Rouhani told German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.

“Iran has always sought to reduce tensions in the region, trying to strengthen security and stability,” Rouhani told Merkel in a telephone call, according to a statement on the website of Iran’s presidency.

The White House also condemned Iran’s “provocative attack” in a statement, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying Iran has deployed into Syria “offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel”.

That deployment “is an unacceptable and highly dangerous development for the entire Middle East”, she said.

Germany and Britain joined the US in denouncing the rocket fire they also said came from Iran, while France reiterated its “unwavering support for Israel’s security”.

Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, following a meeting in Aachen, Germany on Thursday, called for “level-headedness and de-escalation in the region”.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Iran must refrain from “further actions that will only lead to increased instability”, and called on Russia to press the Syrian government to work for a broader political statement.

Meanwhile, in a rare move for an Arab country, Bahrain backed Israel’s right to “defend itself” after the air raids.

Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa wrote on Twitter that so long as Iran uses its forces and missiles to try and destabilise the region, “it is the right of any country in the region, including Israel, to defend itself by destroying sources of danger.”

Bahrain is a close ally of Saudi Arabia and the two countries, whose foreign policies are often in lockstep, view Iran as the chief threat to the region.

Spectre of major confrontation
Outside observers see a dangerous game of brinkmanship.

“The rules of the game are worked out by trial and error, by push and shove. The pushing and shoving has become more intense,” said Heiko Wimmen of the International Crisis Group. “We are getting closer to the brink.”

It was only a matter of time before Iran pushed back, said Wimmen.

“The point will come with these actions where the Iranians will say, ‘We have to push back forcefully, we have to establish deterrence against the Israelis if we want to stay in Syria,'” said Wimmen.

Israel, too, may feel emboldened by US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“Israel has been chomping at the bit to take a big bite out of Iran’s forces in Syria,” said Nicholas Heras of the Center for a New American Security.

Netanyahu sees that decision as a “green light to go after Iran in Syria, the consequences be damned”, said Heras.

“The Israelis believe they are facing a nightmare scenario right now where Iran is on the march in Syria with the intention to start a war that will end Israel.”

ATMs can now verify transactions via Aadhaar3

May 11, 2018 by Nasheman

The ‘dumb’ ATM is set to turn smart. Banks are replacing the decades-old cash dispensers with new digital machines that have fixed menu options, are compact and come with a large 15-inch tablet-like multi-touch screen. These ‘smart’ ATMs can perform Aadhaar-based biometric authentication and all other transactions via net banking as against merely dispensing cash.
After the lull caused by demonetization, ATM maker NCR is seeing a resurgence of demand as lenders are replacing some of the old Windows XP machines rather than upgrade them. It has been six years since the ATM network crossed the 1-lakh mark and now most of the machines are due for an upgrade. Banks are keen on upgrades as the new machines with tablet screens are now available at Rs 3 lakh each — almost half their predecessors’ price.

“With our new machine — the SelfServ series — we are positioning the ATM as an extension of the bank’s digital channel. In digital banking, the screen is a valuable real estate for banks and can be customized for each customer,” said NCR India MD Navroze Dastur. He added that the company is deploying the new machines on behalf of banks and white-label ATM firms.

NCR, which accounts for almost half of the ATMs in India, has been able to bring down the price of machines, mainly due to its ‘Make in India’ strategy. Chennai is the manufacturing hub for the ATM maker, with a research and development center in Hyderabad.

The average amount of cash withdrawn per ATM each day has risen to Rs 4.2 lakh in December 2017 from Rs 4.1 lakh in October 2016 — just before demonetization. Although the number of ATMs in India has gone up only marginally to over 2 lakh, NCR has sold over 24,000 ATMs as banks replaced old machines.

Trio World Academy students attends UNESCO Mobile Learning Week and also visits The University of Peace conference in Paris

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

First-ever high-school participants to represent India in both the events as part of their educational trip

The students of Trio World Academy had a memorable educational trip to France recently where they had an opportunity to attend the UNESCO Mobile Learning Week at the UNESCO Headquarters and also attended the University of Peace in Paris. The Trio World Academy Students were the youngest and the first-ever high-school participants from India to have attended both this prestigious event this year.

Mobile Learning Week is UNESCO’s flagship ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in education event. The 2018 edition, under the theme “Skills for a connected world”, examined the types of skills needed in and for a connected economy and society, with a focus on digital skills and competencies. Participants exchanged knowledge about the ways governments and other stakeholders can define and achieve the skills-related targets specified by UNESCO. Students attended several interactive workshops on “Designing digital standards for education in crises (along with Google.org and Learning Equality).

The students also had the opportunity to visit The University of Peace conference that was organized by Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris or the International University Campus in Paris. The main theme of the University of Peace 2018 was “Democracy and the Digital age” where students learnt about the scope and extent of democracy amidst current IT Revolution and the age of technology.

The students of Trio group spoke to the University of Peace Coordinator, Mr. Boris Wiseman discussing one on one the future of peace in the digital world. Cambridge Advanced Level student of Grade 12, Arjun Hegde asked if ever-lasting peace is a possibility or a myth and if technology would offer a solution or not to which Mr. Wiseman was of the opinion that “the right technology is certainly the answer and the University of Peace is an attempt at finding how technology can be made right”. IBDP Year 1 student Ashwin Iyer asked Mr. Wiseman “In this current political state where many countries are in an artificial state of peace due to the overarching threat of nuclear war, what is a better solution to this problem in your opinion?” Mr. Wiseman responded saying it’s too complex an issue to summarize in one line. But yes peace needs to be protected and nurtured artificially if need be.” Answering IBDP Year 1 student Amrutamshu Iyengar’s question on the inception of the University of Peace, Mr. Wiseman explained that “the University of Peace of the CIUP that started in 2015 is an annual event that brings together young researchers who gather to speak about peace and the preservation of peace in our world today. This is to carry forward the peace ideal with which the International University Campus was started between World War 1 and 2.” Kevin Andre Soares, another student of IBDP Year 1 inquired on how the University’s perspective of peace has changed over the years while Tushara Urala of IBDP Year 1 wondered about the future plans of expansion of the University of Peace to which Mr. Wiseman replied saying that, “If you would organize a University of Peace in Bangalore, I would love to visit and speak to other youngsters like you on the future of peace!”

Expressing his views on the educational trip, Mr. Naveen K M, Managing Director, TRIO World Academy said,” The school aims to give pupils the skills permitting them to face the complex problems of the world today, instilling in them a sense of responsibility through impart of moral values and widening their knowledge horizons about other religions and cultures. A global event of this stature is the perfect place for Trio to encourage its students and get them thinking about the impact of learning on a worldwide scale, which Trio always believes in.”

Large number of journalists join elections fray in Iraq

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Earlier this month, Iraqi journalist Muntadher al-Zaidi – who shot to prominence in 2008 when he hurled a shoe at George W Bush and called the former US president “a dog” – announced his candidacy for the May 12 parliamentary elections.

“I want to lock up all the thieves who’ve robbed Iraq of its wealth,” he told Al Jazeera, explaining that he plans to pass a law that would see “corrupt politicians held to account”.

The nomination of Zaidi with the Sairoon Coalition – an alliance between the Sadirst Movement and the Iraqi Communist Party – was celebrated by his supporters. But it was not received with the same level of enthusiasm among the wider Iraqi public as his “farewell kiss [to Bush] from the Iraqi people” 10 years ago.

The Sairoon Coalition led by Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is one of the five main Shia factions running in the election for a new parliament.

While many parties have taken the opportunity to emphasise a unified, cross-sectarian national identity in the run-up to the vote, Iraq remains plagued by divisions along sectarian and ethnic lines.

With a large number of Iraqi journalists contesting the upcoming elections, the first since the defeat of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL also known as ISIS), observers fear that the lines between independent journalism and politics in Iraq are becoming increasingly blurred.

According to Iraq’s High Electoral Commission, there has been a record number of journalists and media personalities entering the electoral fray.

“We don’t know the exact number for journalists running in the election, but they are definitely in the tens. The numbers are visibly larger than in previous votes, said Hazem Al-Radinee, a member of the high board of electoral commissioners.

Complaints against 193 advertisements in February upheld.

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) on Thursday said its Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) has upheld complaints against 193 advertisements out of 290 in February for mainly “gross exaggeration of product efficacy” and violation of acts and rules.

“In February 2018, ASCI’s Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) upheld complaints against 193 advertisements out of the total of 290 advertisements that were evaluated by the CCC.

“A total of 187 advertisements were picked up by ASCI’s suo moto surveillance and objections against 163 advertisements were upheld. Of the 103 advertisements complained against by the general public or by the industry members, complaints against 30 advertisements were upheld by the CCC,” a statement said.

Out of the total 193 advertisements against which complaints were upheld, 154 belonged to healthcare sector, 18 to education sector, eight to the food and beverages category, two to personal care and 11 were from the others’ category.

Gross exaggeration of product efficacy was the number one reason for upholding complaints, followed by violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act and the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, the council said.

It also said the other reasons were failure to provide substantial facts and figures to support claims and delivering advertisements which were misleading by ambiguity and by implication.

Among the various complaints, CCC observed that an advertisement was encouraging binging or excessive consumption of a snacking product.

A claim regarding “instant” result post consumption of a fast absorbing product was considered to be misleading, the council said.

“Similarly, claim by a leading food company to enhance IQ, was inadequately substantiated. An advertisement by a mattress company featuring celebrities making a quantitative claim that less than six hours of sleep drains 40 per cent brain energy was considered to be misleading,” it added.

Rape is a political issue, will raise it: Rahul

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Countering Prime Minister Narendra Modi who said incidents of rape should not be politicised, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said rapes are a political issue and his party would continue to raise them.

Commenting on Modi questioning the Congress for politicising rapes by holding a candle light march, Gandhi said: “Excuse me, atrocities against women, rapes are political issues. Who says it is not a political issue. It is absolutely a national issue.”

“Are you telling me that if India’s women are raped, politicians should not discuss it? It is an issue that is fundamental,” he said during a press briefing here and added that the Congress will keep on raising them.

“The treatment of our women is absolutely an issue. Modi likes to discuss things like sea planes, which is a political issue, I guess… bullet trains.”

Gandhi said Modi is raking up such issues as he doesn’t like to discuss the fundamental issues in Karnataka.

“What are the issues in Karnataka? They are pretty simple. Helping the farmers — we have given Rs 8,000 crore to the farmers. How much money has the Prime Minister given to the farmers of India and that of Karnataka. I want to ask that question.

“He gives Rs 250,000 crore to the richest 15 people in this country. How much has the Prime Minister given (to the farmers)… zero.”

Accusing Modi of not giving “even one rupee” in debt waiver to the farmers, he said: “This is something to be ashamed of. That is another political issue. But Modi doesn’t like to raise it.”

Attacking the Prime Minister on corruption, Gandhi said it’s a fundamental political issue.

“Our Prime Minister comes and says he fights corruption. Well on his stage is Mr (B.S.) Yeddyurappa, his Chief Ministerial candidate, who has spent time in jail for corruption and stealing from the people of Karnataka.”

“On the other side Reddy brothers, who stole as much money from Karnataka as the Congress party gave for MGNREGA — Rs 35,000 crore. They have stolen this much money from your pockets and fleeced you,” he added.

He said Modi should answer why in none of his speeches does he talk about the eight seats he has given to the Reddy brothers.

“Why he doesn’t explain to the people as to why the CBI has become the Central Bureau of Illegal Mining and is being used to protect these people. These are the issues.”

Voter ID cards being bought for Rs 100

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Bribing citizens to vote for a particular candidate is old school. Enticing voters not to exercise their franchise is the new trend that is fast catching up in poll-bound Karnataka. The seizure of 10,000 voter ID cards from an apartment at RR Nagar here on Tuesday afternoon seems to be an indication of this “new craft”.
This is how the racket works: candidates bribe registered voters, who they believe would not vote for them for ideological reasons, in exchange for their electors photo identity cards (EPIC).
The price of EPIC cards varies from place to place. It is just Rs 100 in a Lambani tanda (cluster) in a remote assembly segment of north Karnataka but could go up to Rs 2,000 for slum dwellers in Bengaluru.
“I was approached by supporters of a BJP candidate who asked me if I wanted to get Rs 1,000 for not voting,” Arbaz Khan (name changed), a carpenter in Hebbal, said. “And I said, ‘yes’. Some of other absentee voters in my colony got a pint of whiskey along with cash,” he claimed.
