Thunderstorm in Uttar Pradesh 16 dead, 12 injured.

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

At least 16 were killed and over 25 injured in yet another thunder and hailstorm that wreaked havoc in over a dozen districts in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, 73 people were killed when a high-velocity storm hit different parts of the state about a week ago.

Reports reaching the state headquarters claimed that four persons in Etawah and Agra, three in Mathura, two in and Ferozabad, one each Aligarh, Hathras and Kanpur Dehat were killed in separate incidents of house collapse/tree and electric pole felling and lightening.

Reports claimed that Western parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Agra division, was worst-affected again when yet another 68 Km/hour high-velocity winds hit the state, third in less than two months. The met department had warned about the storm in advance.

The thunderstorm was followed by a hailstorm that caused more damage to human lives, livestock, and crop. In Mathura, 33-year-old Bhagwati Singh riding a tractor was caught in the storm near Khanjara Baans village. He was crushed to death when his tractor toppled on him due to strong winds.

Shakuntala Singh (55) was electrocuted when an electric pole fell on her in Maant tehsil in Mathura district. A resident of Mahawant village in Mathura, Mukhypyari (60) died in a similar incident when an electric pole fell on her.

A 15-year-old boy died when lightning struck him at Mohabbatpura village in Hathras district. In Etmadpur in Agra, two people were killed when the roof of their house caved in.

The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district magistrates in affected areas to provide immediate compensation to the families of victims and personally supervise relief and rescue operations.

The Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar said that teams of disaster management have been rushed in these districts to speed up the relief and rescue operations. “More funds have been allocated to the worst affected districts for providing immediate relief to the families of victims,” said he.

Earlier, at least 73 persons were killed and over 100 injured when the storm hit western parts of Uttar Pradesh about a week ago. The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was on a three-day campaign tour to poll-bound Karnataka, had to cut short his tour. He rushed back to Agra to meet the families of the victims and injured.

Israel says it hit Iranian military targets in Syria

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The Israeli army said on Thursday it hit dozens of Iranian military targets in Syria overnight, accusing Tehran of launching rocket and missile attack towards its forces in the occupied Golan Heights.

“The (Israeli military) has struck dozens of Iranian military targets in Syria,” Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told journalists.

He said they targeted intelligence, logistics, storage and vehicles as well as the origin of the rockets.

A Syrian radar installation was destroyed in the attack, Syrian state news agency SANA cited a military source as saying.

“This is the first time that Israel has directly accused Iran of attacking it from within Syrian territory since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011,” Al Jazeera correspondent Harry Fawcett said from Jerusalem.
It [Israeli military] also said that some of those attacking forces were met by Syrian anti-aircraft systems and that resulted in Syrian military targets being struck as well.

“The question is whether that will be a deterrent or whether it could invite further escalation from the other side now that these things are in train, accidental escalation towards further conflict is always a possibility.”

‘Destabilise the entire region’
Israel was accused of attacking an airbase near Homs province in April. In February, an Israeli F-16 fighter jet was shot down by the Syrian military while targeting what it called Iranian sites responsible for launching a drone into the occupied Golan Heights.

Israel has carried out more than a dozen strikes inside Syria in the past one year.

The two countries are still technically at war, although the border remained largely quiet for decades until 2011, when the Syrian conflict broke out.

Israeli military spokesman Conricus said that the Russians were informed prior to the attack. It is one of the largest Israeli military operations in recent years and the biggest against Iranian targets.

Moscow and Tehran are close allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has presided over a civil war for the past seven years. Over half a million Syrians have died and nearly half of the prewar population displaced.

Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Beirut, said that the move has created concerns in neighboring Lebanon after Lebanese army said that the country’s airspace was violated by Israeli fighter jets.

“Israel has been saying in the past that the Syrian government is paving the way for Iran and Hezbollah [a Lebanese Shia militia] to maintain strong military presence in the [occupied] Golan Heights not far from the border with Israel.

Ahelbarra said that any confrontation between Israel and Iran could trigger a reaction from Hezbollah [that backs President Assad].

“If that happens, then you might end up with a situation where you have different frontlines, different battlefields happening at the same time, which could further destabilise the entire region.”

Factors that may make or mar the prospects of BJP and INC in Karnataka

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka has been known for voting out the party in power ever since 1989 when the Janata Party government led by SR Bommai paved way for the Veerendra Patil led Indian National Congress party. Then the Congress party bagged 178 seats in a house of 224 which is unparallel in the political history of the state. The strength of the remaining parties was: BJP-04,Janata Dal-24,Janata Party(JP)-02.

Thanks to the ill health of Veerendra Patil in the form of paralysis and his subsequent dismissal pronouncement by the then Congress president Rajiv Gandhi at the Bengaluru airport the five years term saw two more chief ministers in the form of S Bangarappa and M Veerappa Moily. But the unceremonious removal of the Lingayat strong man made the Congress party pay very heavily in the elections during 1994.

The Janata Dal government came into being with HD Devegowda as the chief minister and it was under his captaincy that the party bagged 16 Lok Sabha seats in the subsequent elections. HD Devegowda also rose to become the Prime Minister. He was succeeded by JH Patel as chief minister and Siddaramaiah as Deputy CM. The strength of different parties was: Janata Dal-115,BJP-40,INC-34 and others-35.

1999 general elections ensured the rout of Janata Dal government succeeded by SM Krishna led Congress party. But much before his tenure could complete SMK recommended dissolution of Assembly and went to pre mature polls just like Atal Bihari Vajpayee did at the centre during 2004.

SM Krishna’s overconfidence boomeranged and a hung Assembly came into being with the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single largest party with 79 seats while the remaining parties lagged behind: INC-65, JDS-58, JDU-05 and Others-17. Yet the number one position didn’t make any sense to the saffron party as the Congress formed an alliance government with the support of Janata Dal Secular. Then N Dharamsingh became the CM while Siddaramaiah became the DCM for the second time.

In less than one and odd years N Dharamsingh government was toppled by HD Kumarswamy to install a JDS-BJP partnership government under an understanding of sharing power for 20 months each.

However after enjoying power for 20 months HD Devegowda who had maintained a religious silence till the end of his son’s regime claimed of consuming poison if at all his son handed the reins to BS Yeddyurappa. So though BS Yeddyurappa took the oath of office as chief minister had to put papers within a week as Janata Dal Secular failed to extend its support.

As a result of such situation elections were held in 2008 which saw the surge of BJP by winning 110 seats but still falling short of simple majority. INC managed to wrest 80 seats while the JDS had to be content with a mere 28 seats while Others constituted 06. BS Yeddyurappa managed to pull the strings with the help of some Independent legislators. It was also the beginning of ‘Operation Lotus’ under which MLAs of other parties were made to resign and re contest elections on a BJP ticket.

Though the party retained power frequent rumblings within made it stumble every now and then.BS Yeddyurappa had to quit and underwent prison life on allegations of denotification. He was succeeded first by DV Sadanandagowda and Jagadish Shettar later.

In the meanwhile BS Yeddyurappa floated his own Karnataka Janata Party(KJP) and B Sriramulu came out with his Badavara Shramikara Raitara Congress Party(BSRP).Both of them ensured humiliating defeat for their parent party by bagging six seats with 10 percent vote share and four seats with 4 percent of votes respectively. In this way Siddaramaiah led Congress party romped to power in 2013 with 122 seats.JDS and BJP got 40 seats each.

In a way all these results have one thing in common: Not even once the party in power has been returned and whichever party happened to assume office was just by default. It also goes without saying that parties in power have lost the seat of power due to anti incumbency in a big way.

Now it is 2018 and the factors to make or mar the poll prospects of all the three rival parties have changed a lot. BS Yeddyurappa and B Sriramulu are back in the party with Gali Janardhan Reddy pumping in funds from behind. After enough of public diatribe both BS Yeddyurappa and KS Eshwarappa, leader of opposition in the legislative council give a united portrayal only on the stage. But insiders confide that all’s not well still with them!

In a way BJP looks like having compromised in projecting a tainted figure as its chief ministerial candidate. But what better alternative did it have? The HN Ananth Kumar, BL Santosh and Pralhad Joshi types have been nursing hopes of becoming CMs’ today or tomorrow but the party is in no position to afford them as CM candidates as their quality of mass leadership and acceptance is also well known to the party cadres.

There are many leaders in the party who still confide that it was a wrong choice on the part of leadership and the decision will give wrong message to the masses. But KS Eshwarappa is quite vocal on the matter: Who else is the mass leader in BJP other than BS Yeddyurappa. He’s not just a Lingayat leader but also a mass leader and in whom can you find a comparison in the state?

Siddaramaiah as leader of the opposition in the previous Assembly had undertook a padyatra from Bengaluru to Ballari under the guise of leading a movement against looting of mineral wealth. He had all along the route attacked the Reddy brothers and had called for stalling the mining operations.

But very recently he proved that he is no better while in power. He admitted Anandsingh,BJP Vijayanagar MLA and B Nagendra,Kudligi Independent MLA into the Congress fold and also rewarded them the party ticket to contest elections. In fact both these legislators were arrested by the CBI on charges of mining export scam.

As opposition leader Siddaramaiah smelt everything fishy in mining business but when the occasion came to act against such activities he not just refrained from doing so but did opposite to what he had been propagating till now.

Likewise BJP also goofed up in its stance over mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy taking part in the party’s campaign. First Amith Shah,BJP national president told categorically: The party has no connections whatsoever with Reddy.

On the other hand P Muralidhar Rao, BJP state in charge challenged: The party is very clear on keeping Reddy at safe distance. In case anyone finds him on the party’s campaign stage just whatsup me the photo and leave me what action to take.

But in quite contrast to these declared stances BS Yeddyurappa claimed: With the entry of Janardhan Reddy the party has got the strength equivalent to ten elephants. We will take his help to win in at least 10-15 seats!

In a way mining scam and its baron who had gone to the extent of toppling the BS Yeddyurappa government never became an issue to debate for the BJP nor the Congress as both of them had similar black sheep accompanying them.

Siddaramaiah led government had constituted a joint legislature committee to probe into the affairs of the dubious NICE company owned by Ashok Kheny,Bidar South MLA. The TB Jayachandra committee had even recommended initiating harsh measures for violating the norms in developing road infrastructure.

But Siddaramaiah much against the opposition of his own party legislators and leaders admitted the tainted politician to the party. He is now the party candidate in the same constituency much against the disenchantment of Mallikarjun Kharge who had also expressed his resentment over the move.

The move of Siddaramaiah to play the Veerashiva-Lingayat card just before the elections is perceived in the political circles as a very calculative move assuring of positive benefit to the party.

It may be recalled here that the state government constituted a committee to go into the demand of according separate minority religion status to the Veerashiva-Lingayat community construed to be the bastion of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Following the recommendation of the committee the state government forwarded the proposal to the centre favoring separate minority religion tag to the Veerashiva-Lingayats. But by then the desired effect of dividing the community was achieved. If the group led by pontiffs of various Panchapeetha Mutts were aghast on usage of the term Lingayat the opponent group had gone much ahead in batting for the state government.

This controversy is being felt to have a significant impact on the outcome of polls. Although there are conflicting claims on the probable effect against the BJP as Amith Shah has declared of not honoring the proposal. But the swing towards the ruling Congress cannot be underplayed though there are diverse opinions on the extent of benefit.

Mahadayi river water sharing has literally become a perennial problem to the people of Dharwad and Gadag districts and they have been agitating on a daily basis since more than three years. The issue was dubbed to boomerang the BJP for its failure of finding a solution in spite of having the same party government in Goa and the Centre. But all such apprehensions were thrown to the wind when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his maiden public meeting in Gadag: We are committed in ushering justice to the peasants by ensuring Mahadayi river to quench the thirst of water parched areas.

Amith Shah, BJP national president was more specific at his public rally in Gadag: Mahadayi river water will flow in this region within six months of a BJP government taking over in the state.

By such announcements Mahadayi river water sharing dispute which had been haunting the BJP has suddenly turned the tables in favor.

Lawlessness, attacks on innocent law abiding citizens more so on children, women and senior citizens, Bengaluru city turning up into a garbage city, politicians and their kith and kin taking law into their own hands to harass common people, steel bridge project scam and many other issues which were in the limelight throughout the five years didn’t appear to make much sense to the polls.

Modi slams Congress for disrespecting Ambedkar

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hit out at the Congress for “disrespecting” Dalit icon Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and accused it of preventing the OBC Commission from getting a constitutional status in Parliament.

Interacting with the SC/ST, OBC, Minority and Slum Morchas of the Karnataka BJP through the ‘Narendra Modi Mobile App’, the Prime Minister said there was no place for Dalits in the hearts of the Congress and asked it to mention a single thing done by it for the betterment of the community.

“There is no place for Dalits in the heart of the Congress. This has been continuing for last many decades. Even the Congress has no respect for Ambedkar. They did everything to defeat him in the 1952 general elections and the bypoll to Bhandara parliamentary constituency in 1953,” he said.

He said the Congress humiliated Ambedkar till they were in power. “They did not even confer the Bharat Ratna on him. It was only when Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji formed the government that Babasaheb was conferred the title”, he said.

He stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was working on developing Panchteerth of Ambedkar. “Taking inspiration from all the great saints, today we are trying to fulfil Babasaheb’s dream of a powerful and prosperous nation”, Modi remarked.

Attacking the Congress for not letting the OBC Commission get a constitutional status in Parliament, he said they were only involved in vote bank politics and never cared about empowering the weaker sections.

“You will be surprised to know that during the Congress regime, OBC leaders used to demand a constitutional status to OBC Commission but they (Congress) never cared. They only remain involved in vote bank politics… To stop the OBC Commission getting constitutional status, they did not allow the Parliament to function,” he said.

Noting that the BJP had the maximum number of MPs from the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities, the Prime Minister said that leaders of various morchas had a paramount role in connecting directly with people and furthering the party’s reach. He urged them to further the reach of the party’s initiatives among the weaker sections.

Invoking Ambedkar, social reformer Jyotiba Phule, Sant Kabir and Ravidas’s contribution to fight social injustice, Modi said their efforts were inspirational and continued to show his government the way.

During the interaction, Modi also took questions from the BJP leaders and spoke at length about several welfare measures being undertaken to uplift them.

Highlighting several initiatives being undertaken by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, Modi said that in 2015 the government strengthened the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and increased the offences listed in the Act from 22 to 47 to empower the weaker sections.

He said that “Stand up” and “Mudra Yojanas” were helping to make SC/ST, OBC and women financially empowered.

Mentioning several pro-poor schemes launched by his government, Modi spoke about how India was rapidly growing.

“Today India is the second largest steel manufacturer in the world, second largest mobile phone manufacturer and fourth largest automobile manufacturer,” he said, adding that 99 cities are on the verge of becoming smart cities and 500 cities are having a positive impact of the AMRUT scheme.

Rahul Gandhi says Congress rule far better than BJP in Karnataka

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said there was “no contest” between his party’s government in Karnataka and the previous BJP regime in the southern state as regards corruption, adding that the saffron party’s rule “wins hands down”.

Gandhi took to Twitter to draw a comparison between the Congress government in Karnataka and the previous BJP regime (2008-13) in the state, with the help of figures to show that his party’s rule was better on all counts.

“In Karnataka, when it comes to corruption, it’s a “No Contest” as this graphic shows. The BJP wins hands down! (sic),” he tweeted, along with two sets of graphics.

The graphics claimed that the Congress was the “top job creator” in the country, the Anna Bhagya scheme of the party’s government in Karnataka was feeding four crore people, the Ramthal Marol, Asia’s largest drip irrigation project, and the world’s largest solar power park were built by the party and that it had also waived the loans of 22 lakh farmers, amounting to Rs 8,165 crore, in the southern state.

On the other hand, the graphics pointed out that during the BJP rule in Karnataka, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was jailed in connection with the denotification scam, India’s “largest political poaching scandal” — “Operation Kamala” — was unearthed during the saffron party’s rule, it had pioneered “cashless corruption” by taking bribes in cheques, former state minister Krishnaiah Setty was jailed in a land grab case, while the Reddy brothers were jailed in a Rs 35,000-crore mining scam.

“Who works better? Congress government of 2013-18 or BJP government of 2008-13. Numbers speak for themselves. Choose right. Vote Congress,” the graphics said.

The second set of graphics claimed that while the Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had created 53 lakh jobs in Karnataka, only 26.64 lakh jobs were created during the BJP regime.

It also claimed that while the Congress had given loans worth Rs 12,000 crore to farmers and completed 42.3 kms of “Namma Metro”, the BJP had sanctioned farm loans worth Rs 6,560 crore and completed only 6.7 kms of the metro works.

It also claimed that the Congress had built 15.5 lakh houses as against the 11.3 lakh during the BJP regime and the budget outlay of the current government was Rs 2,09,181 crore in 2018, while in 2013, it was Rs 1,17,005 crore under the BJP.

It also claimed that the Congress’s achievements were more than those of the BJP as regards creation of MBBS seats, road construction, grant of scholarships to OBCs and building toilets.

The 224-member Karnataka Assembly goes to the polls on May 12 and the results will be declared on May 15.

The Congress is seeking to retain power in the southern state, while the BJP’s aim is to unseat the Congress in Karnataka.

IPL-2018: Team has backed me a lot: Ishan Kishan

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Teenage wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, whose 21-ball 62 helped Mumbai Indians (MI) thrash Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a whopping 102 runs, credited the team’s backing for his success, saying it has helped him bat freely.

“It’s always good for a youngster to bat up the order and when your skipper and the franchise is backing you, it’s just about playing your game. I am comfortable batting anywhere,” Kishan told reporters at the post-match press conference on Wednesday night.

MI were 62 for 2 after nine overs when Ishan joined skipper Rohit Sharma at the crease. Rohit’s message to Kishan was pretty simple — “back yourself and attack”.

“Coach also said in the time-out that just be yourself, back yourself and that we needed some good hits today. Rohit bhai also said, ‘You can hit well, just look at the ball and get with the flow.’

“They knew if I remained there I could get a lot of runs. I just had to look at the ball till the last moment and keep it going,” the 19-year-old Jharkhand southpaw said.

It took Ishan 30 minutes to change the complexion of the game. From 72/2 after 10 overs, MI jumped to 144 in the 15th over.

Kishan and Rohit scored 82 for the third wicket in which the latter contributed just 18.

One of the highlights of Ishan’s innings came in the 14th over when he took on Kuldeep and smashed him for four successive sixes. The over saw 25 runs coming off it.

“Kuldeep is outgoing for me (bowls the delivery that turns away from me) but he loves to bowl the googly at me. I’ve played him earlier as well. So I knew he was trying to get the ball outside the off stump,” Kishan said about his plans to counter KKR’s left-arm spinner.

“My target was that if I get the ball in my arc, I would hit it out of the park. It was like ‘keep watching the ball’. If you get the ball, hit, otherwise you can go for a single as well. Rohit was batting with me, so there was no problem. I knew if I don’t score, he can cover up.”

MI have backed Ishan despite three ducks — two of them being first ball ducks — in the tournament so far.

In the early part of the tournament, he batted at No. 3 but has now been moved to No. 4 to accommodate Rohit in top three.

He started the tournament with a 29-ball 40 against Chennai Super Kings and then made 44 off 23 against Delhi Daredevils even as the team lost both the games. He knocked his first half-century off the season against Rajasthan Royals but the team slipped to another defeat.

Ishan was asked about state-mate and legendary former India captain MS Dhoni helping him.

“I also get lots of tips from Dhoni bhai. He’s a legendary player and keeps telling me that I can take time. I feel confident when these guys talk to me,” Ishan said.

MI, who are now in fourth position in the points table, take on struggling Rajasthan Royals next at home.

“Mumbai Indians love to bounce back,” Ishan said on the team stringing together three back-to-back wins on the spin after facing a series of reversals.

“When the team comes together and talk to each other, it’s about helping out each other. We know we have done mistakes in the previous matches. Now we are just backing and helping out each other. We are just thinking about one match at a time and putting up a good show.”

Malaysia: Historic win for Mahathir, swearing-in today

May 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has scored a historic victory in the country’s general elections.

When he takes power, 92-year old Mahathir will be the oldest prime minister in the world. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on Thursday (May 10).

The election commission said Mahathir’s opposition alliance has won 115 seats, over the threshold of 112 seats needed to form a government.

Mahathir defeated the governing Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which has been in power for more than 60 years. BN coalition won 79 seats with just a few left to count.

The victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country for 22 years, and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.
