Yemen: Saudi-led attack hits Houthi-held presidential palace

May 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Eyewitnesses said fighter jets bombed Sanaa several times around midday [Khaled Abdullah/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Air raids have targeted the presidential office in Yemen’s rebel-held capital Sanaa, killing at least six people and wounding 30 others, according to medical sources.

Witnesses said fighter jets bombed Sanaa several times at midday on Monday, with rebel-controlled Al-Masirah television blaming the Saudi-led coalition for the raid.

Residents said they heard two explosions hit the building, which is located near a hotel, a bank and several shops, and not far from the central bank, according to AFP news agency.

Witnesses said the office, used by the Houthi rebel administration, is normally bustling with employees.

“We were working next door to the presidential offices and heard a plane, and then an explosion,” Ahmed Dehashir, a first responder, told AFP at the scene of the attack.

“Some people rushed to the scene and saw the destruction and people caught under the rubble. We tried to dig out the dead and wounded from under the debris, and then there was a second strike,” he said.

“There are a lot of people trapped under the rubble,” Dehashir added.

The Saudi-led coalition launched a military intervention in Yemen in 2015 with the goal of rolling back the Houthis and restoring the internationally recognised government to power.

‘Houthi missiles intercepted’
The raid came hours after Saudi Arabia’s air defence systems intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi rebels towards the south of the kingdom on Sunday, according to coalition spokesperson Colonel Turki al-Malki.

He said the rockets were launched from northern Yemen towards “populated areas” of Saudi Arabia but were intercepted overnight without any casualties or damage.

Since November of last year, rebels have intensified missile attacks into neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

The conflict in Yemen has left nearly 10,000 people dead, tens of thousands wounded, and millions on the brink of famine in what the United Nations has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

JD-S for farm loan waiver, sops to women in Karnataka manifesto

May 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Promising to waive bank loans to farmers within 24 hours of coming to power in Karnataka, the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) on Monday released its manifesto that promised a plethora of sops/freebies for women, senior citizens, patients, students, doctors and the poor.

“I will waive banks loans of all farmers within 24 hours of taking oath and supply free seeds and fertilisers across the state,” claimed JD-S President and its chief ministerial candidate H.D. Kumaraswamy.

The poll manifesto in Kannada, released ahead of the May 12 Assembly elections, promised free seeds and fertilisers to state farmers.

The opposition party said that it will also set up a farmers’ consultative committee to address their issues, with two farmers in the body from each of the state’s 30 districts.

The party aims to provide pregnant women an assistance of Rs 6,000 per month for three months prior to delivery and after.

“Households below poverty line (BPL) will receive free electricity in rural areas,” the manifesto said.

The JD-S also announced that it will provide 30 kg rice each month to BPL families along with free state-run bus passes for senior citizens.

In addition, the party promised pensions to senior citizens, widows and the disabled.

Proposal to introduce Hindi in Tripura TV channels slammed

May 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Opposition parties on Monday slammed a Tripura government committee’s proposal to introduce Hindi as a medium of news on all local TV channels instead of “Kokborok”, the state’s second official language since 1978.

The Information and Cultural Affairs Department committee on April 6 proposed that “instead of using ‘Kokborok’ as a medium of news, Hindi may be introduced as it would promote nationalism and people from outside the state also could follow”.

The main opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) condemned the proposal, saying Hindi may be promoted but not at the cost of “Kokborok”, the official language of the indigenous tribals.

“Hindi may be promoted, but the regional and tribal languages should also be given due importance and recognition. We strongly oppose the proposal,” CPI-M’s Tripura state secretary Bijan Dhar told the media.

He said the first Left Front government headed by former Chief Minister Nripen Chakraborty in 1978 had introduced “Kokborok” as one of the official languages of Tripura.

Congress Vice-President Tapas Dey called the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government “anti-tribal” for taking the “undemocratic decision”.

“The proposal was announced a month ago and the state government has remained silent. We demand its immediate rejection,” Dey said.

However, the BJP has rejected the opposition’s claims saying that “a committee’s recommendation could not be a government’s decision”.

BJP ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), said it was “unaware of the proposal”.

“We don’t know anything about such a proposal,” IPFT leader Ananta Debbarma said when contacted by IANS.

Amidst the controversy, Information and Cultural Affairs Department Director Bishnupada Das told IANS that “Kokborok” news would continue.

BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb said that an official notification has not been issued and were “working to promote ‘Kokborok’ language”.

“As far as Hindi is concerned, it is necessary to introduce it for bringing Tripura into same group with other major states. It does not mean that ‘Kokborok’ would be suppressed.”

Modi rejects Congress charge on unemployment, blames opposition party

May 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday rejected the Congress accusation against his government of not creating enough jobs and claimed that several of its initiatives led to the creation of jobs in the public and private sectors.

Modi, in turn, held the Congress responsible for the unemployment situation and accused it of opposing technologies/initiatives like the EVMs and Aadhaar.

“With emphasis on public and private sectors, we are also focussing on personal sector for employment. The pace of work on the infrastructure projects has been increased,” Modi said in response to a query while addressing Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha ‘karyakartas’ through his NaMo app.

Highlighting how the National Democratic Alliance government was strengthening the personal sector, he said that the country’s infrastructure sector was growing rapidly and added that without employing more people it was not possible to achieve this growth.

He mentioned a World Bank report on easing business environment in India and how through the Mudra Yojana a platform was being provided to budding entrepreneurs across the country.

Modi said that due to the government initiative, India had emerged as the best destination for foreign investment and this has been approved by various credit agencies.

“The Foreign Direct Investment in India has reached its highest level, which is consistently increasing,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that under the Mudra Yojana, loans of Rs 1.27 crore have been disbursed to the youth of Karnataka without any collateral.

“This constitutes 11 per cent of the total Mudra loans disbursed so far. Youngsters are not only becoming self-dependent, but also creating jobs for others,” he said.

Modi said that in the last few years, immense growth was seen in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) accounts.

“Due to demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax, there has been a great change in the formal sector. Workers are getting proper benefits in the social sector. The figures of EPFO accounts prove that there has been growth in the formal sector,” he said.

Dubbing the Congress criticism on employment and job creation fronts as a “conspiracy”, he said that the opposition party has been putting the blame on the BJP government because it failed to do anything during its 10-year rule from 2004-14.

“The Congress has nothing to say about its own achievements. They ruled the country for 60 years and what did they do for employment generation? If there is unemployment, is that due to four years of our government? So, they find it easy to accuse us and spread lies,” he said.

Modi said that the Congress is spreading lies and hatching conspiracies to put the onus on the NDA government for its own failures.

Terming employment generation as the “biggest problem” in the country, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has been attacking the Centre for not fulfilling the promise of creating two crore jobs every year, which the BJP made ahead of the 2014 elections.

Responding to a query over rising political violence, the Prime Minister said there can be no place for such violence in Indian democracy.

“But of late, I have seen that such violence is on the rise in some states. In Karnataka too, we have seen how brutally our ‘karyakartas’ have been murdered. It’s highly condemnable.

“Violence in any form should not be allowed by any political party or ideology in democracy. I appeal to BJP’s youth workers in Karnataka not to act with vengeance even when they have lost their several colleagues in political violence,” he added.

Modi accused the Congress of opposing technologies/gadgets like the Electronic Voting Machines and the Aadhaar initiative and noted how the BJP was promoting technology in every sector.

“In this age of Artificial Intelligence, India cannot lag behind. Through technology, we are promoting skill development,” he said.

On a question on strengthening the demographic dividends of the country, he said that the government’s stress was on quality of education and quantity of opportunities.

“The government is committed to increased higher education facilities,” he said while shedding light on the Atal Innovation Mission. He said the initiative was promoting research and scientific temper among the students.

Siddaramaiah dares Modi, Yeddyurappa for debate

May 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate B.S. Yeddyurappa to an open debate with him.

“Prime Minister Modi is deliberately confusing Karnataka voters with his bombastic speeches on non-issues. All hot air and no substance. My contest is not with him. It is with Yeddyurappa,” tweeted Siddaramaiah.

“I challenge him to an open debate on issues on a single platform. Will he accept? Modi is also welcome,” he added.

Siddaramaiah said: “I will speak extempore. They can bring paper. Come on BSY ‘avare’ let people see who they are voting for beyond the smokescreen created by hot air from Modi-Shah-Yogi (Modi-Amit Shah-Yogi Adityanath) team,” he added.

Karnataka Assembly elections are scheduled for May 12.

Modi Says “If Anyone is Protecting Congress, it is JD(S),”

May 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress, Modi demanded, make it clear if it had a secret understanding with JD(S) or not. He said it was with the support of Deve Gowda’s party that the Congress had its mayor in Bengaluru.

After criticising Congress chief Rahul Gandhi of having insulted JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy, PM Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Congress and the JD(S) have entered into a “secret” pact for the Karnataka Assembly polls.

Prime Minister Modi said H D Deve Gowda’s party was “protecting” the Congress.

“If anyone is protecting the Congress, it is the JD(S)… Congress and JD(S) have a secret understanding…an understanding behind the curtains,” said Modi.

Addressing an election rally here, Modi alleged that the Congress, for years, spoke about poverty eradication only to garner votes, while neglecting farmers and the poor.

“Poll surveys, political pundits…everyone is saying the JD(S) cannot defeat Congress. They cannot form government. If anyone can change the government in Karnataka, it is the BJP,” said Modi.

The Congress, Modi demanded, make it clear if it had a secret understanding with JD(S) or not. He said it was with the support of Deve Gowda’s party that the Congress had its mayor in Bengaluru.

“Why are you hiding this? Congress should have the courage to speak out the truth to people,” said the PM.

Modi, however, insisted he still has respect for Deve Gowda, who had announced before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls that he would commit suicide if he became the prime minister.

The PM said despite Deve Gowda opposing him, when he came to Karnataka for campaigning during the Lok Sabha elections, he wished the JD(S) leader should live for 100 years and serve the society.

“Garibi, garibi, garibi (poverty, poverty, poverty) was their constant rant. But once the son of a poor mother became the prime minister, they clammed shut…now they don’t talk about poverty,” he said.

He alleged the Congress was responsible for the backwardness of Tumakuru.

The farmers, he said, were suffering because of the policies of successive Congress governments at the Centre and in the state.

“Congress needs to be punished for ensuring Karnataka has a better future,” Modi said.

Saudi Govt agree to build churches for Christians living in the Muslim country’

May 5, 2018 by Nasheman

A deal between Saudi Arabia and the Vatican
The supposed deal would see the Saudi government help Christian worshippers
Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran has visited Saudi Arabia and met the royals this year
By Tim Stickings For Mailonline

Saudi Arabia has agreed a deal with the Vatican to build churches for Christian worshippers in the Arab country, it is claimed by Middle Eastern media.

If confirmed, the supposed agreement between Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Mohammed bin Abdel Karim Al-Issa of the Muslim World League would mark a historic first in Saudi history.

The cardinal has visited Saudi Arabia this year and met the royal family, urging the Muslim country to treat its citizens equally.

Under the alleged agreement the churches will be built alongside the establishment of a committee to improve relations between the two, Egypt Independent reports.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Vatican. MailOnline has approached Vatican and Saudi authorities for comment but they have not yet responded.

Saudi Arabia’s anti-extremism Etidal centre hosted Cardinal Tauran last month as the crown prince pushes for inter-religious exchange in the ultra-conservative Sunni kingdom.

There are no Christian churches in Saudi Arabia, the only country in the region without one.

The Vatican has previously spoken of its wish to provide the Christian population of Saudi Arabia with the ability to worship.
