Transport sector dying, strike was last option: Truckers association

June 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Claiming that about 54 lakh trucks are off the road observing nationwide strike against fuel hike, third party insurance and toll, an association of the goos vehicle operators called their move non-political and last resort after several failed attempts to reach the government.

The All India Confederation of Goods Vehicles Owners Association (AICGVO), a Delhi-based association of over 90 lakh truckers, said that while the big truckers and transport agency are just managing to survive, number of recent changes including fuel price have “killed the small and medium transport businesses”.

Talking to IANS, AICGVO General Secretary Kausar Hussain noted that a 1,117 per cent rise in the premium of third party insurance by the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is killing the transport industry, which is largely owned by small businesses.

For 2018-19, the IRDAI has revised the third party liability insurance for by up to 30 per cent — a hike by 18 to 30 per cent over the existing premium rates.

“ruck or transport business owners get businesses through booking agents who are still offering the same rates while the toll, diesel and insurance premiums are shooting persistently… how will we survive, that the biggest question,” he said.

Asked if they had political support, Hussain said that they had received a support letter from the Communist Party of India, but their association and the decision to go on strike is “completely non-political”.

“On April 23 we wrote to our honorable Prime Minister, later we wrote to Finance Ministry, Petroleum Ministry and Road Transport Ministry, but received no response… finally we had no other option but call for indefinite strike,” he said, adding that the profits of small truckers, who own one to three trucks, had been reduced by more than half.

He added that rising price of spare parts, tyre had already been bothering transport business, on which fuel and insurance tarrif are acting like “salt on the wounds”.

According to AICGVO, the maximum support for the strike has come from West Bengal, where they claim over 90 per cent of truckers have decided to go off the road.

While AICGVO called for indefinite strike from Monday, another nation wide organisation — All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said that it will observe strike from July 20 on the same lines.

“There are number of reasons for going on strike but our demands are focused on three of them, which are rising fuel price, toll and third party insurance… strike is not always welcomed as it affects out business, but we had no other option,” its Secretary General Naveen Kumar Gupta told IANS.

AIMTC says that the transport sector in India is completely unorganised which is the “reason for its exploitation”.

Monsoon rains fill Karnataka reservoirs

June 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Heavy and incessant rains, since the onset of the southwest monsoon in Karnataka this month, have raised water levels in the state’s reservoirs, said an official on Monday.

“The water levels in the reservoirs in the Cauvery river basin have gone up due to the rains in the catchment areas over the last fortnight,” Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Director G.S. Srinivasa Reddy told IANS here.

Kabini reservoir in Mysuru district has been filled up to its maximum capacity of 16 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) due to the monsoon rains, and the district authorities have been releasing the excess water back into the river.

The water level of Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam in Mandya district has gone beyond 100 feet of its total 124 feet capacity due to the incessant rainfall, Reddy said.

“The water level in KRS dam is the highest it has been in nearly a decade. But the water inflow into these dams in the Cauvery river basin has come down over the past two days as rains have receded,” he added.

Copious rains had also sent rivers like Cauvery, Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi into spate, flooding roads and highways, submerging bridges and causing landslides in the Western Ghats that disrupted train and bus services in coastal, central and Malnad regions of the southern state.

Overall, the districts of the state have recorded an average of 96 per cent excess rainfall in the first fortnight of this month.

According to the data from the India Meteorological Department’s Bengaluru centre, coastal and southern districts like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Hassan and Kodagu have received a large excess of rainfall.

While Ballari, Chamarajanagar and Mandya have received normal rainfall, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara and Tumakuru districts have been facing a deficit in rainfall.

The monsoon, which currently has a subdued activity in the state, is expected to have a revival after June 22, when Bengaluru and other surrounding districts are expected to witness the monsoon rains, the weather office said.

Karnataka will nominate representatives to Cauvery Board: CM

June 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka will soon send to the Centre the names of its nominees in the Cauvery Water Management Board (CMB) and the Regulation Authority, state Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said after a meeting with Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari.

He told reporters that they have to abide by the Supreme Court judgement in the case relating to the sharing of Cauvery waters with Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.

Kumaraswamy said there were two or three issues regarding the setting up of the Cauvery Management Board whichhad to be sorted out before it starts functioning. Earlier, he had reportedly said that Parliament should have discussed the matter and a resolution passed on the issue of setting up the Board.

Karnataka has been opposed to the setting up of the Board and prefers a negotiated solution to the vexed water sharing issue.

On the issue of backing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been on a dharna with his ministerial collegues at the residential office of Lt Governor Anil Baijal, the chief minister said it was being done in the interest of protecting democracy.

A HELPING HAND IN UNCALLED TIMES

Absent in statistics, unnoticed by researchers, neglected by national and local authorities and mostly overlooked by civil society organizations – the situation of widows is poignant, ineffective and invisible.
In Indian society, predominantly being a patriarchal one, widows lost all privileges and authority within the family and society at large. They were confined to the four walls of the house, wearing white outfits and devoid of any ornaments or make-up that would make them look desirable. Social and family gatherings were out of bounds for widows and she was served only non-spicy food, which was considered to subdue sexual passion. They were considered as a bad omen. In some tribes and castes, she was burnt alive in the name of ‘Sati’ or she was forced to remain as a wife to the brothers of the deceased. People never considered her human, but were only serving the selfish needs of the men in the society. The same was never the case for a widower. He remarried and started a family as normally as possible. Widowhood was ceremoniously thrust upon her for the rest of her life. The offspring too suffered neglect and lack of basic amenities for grooming their life.
Governor General Lord William Bentinck of the East India Company; William Carey, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar and many other activists paved way for abolishing this undesirable and inhumane practice.
After Independence the Indian government made various legislation to protect the widows and her children . all was tuned towards keeping them alive and legally giving some rights to the property. But she was still considered a bad omen!
She is still the vulnerable section of the society who seeks acceptance, empowerment, rights to live as a normal human, to find companionship, remarry and start life afresh and to be employed at an equal status and be seen with justice and empathy. It is estimated that in the Republic of Congo, nearly 50% of women are widows. There are an estimated three million widows in Iraq and over 70,000 in Kabul, Afghanistan.
It is estimated that 7 to 16% of all adult women in the world are widows. It is estimated that there are over 245 million widows worldwide, nearly half of which live in extreme poverty and are subject to cruel violence.

Who is responsible for the social ostracism the lady undergoes after her husband’s demise?
If village loses 300 men in a calamity or mishap, what happens to the family after that?
Who has the count of such women and children in our large and diverse country?
Who is bothered about these – Government? Corporate? Business houses? Common man?
Who … Who … Who ???.
