MeT dept forecast heavy to very heavy rain in Maharashtra

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The MeT department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in Maharashtra, especially in the coastal Konkan region, from today till Monday.

Heavy rains lead to waterlogging in Gandhi market in Sion on Saturday. Express photo by Prashant Nadkar, Mumbai, 02/07/2016

Rapid rise likely in water and levels of rivers in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala.

Rainfall Forecast issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate that Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall is likely at a few places with extremely heavy fall at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra during June 07 to 12.

Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur over Coastal Karnataka tomorrow and throughout Karnataka during 9 June to June 11. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at isolated places over Kerala during June 09 to June 10.

Due to this warning, there is likelihood of rise in water levels in various river basins such as West Flowing rivers Between Tapi and Tadri, Godavari and its tributaries near the west coast, Krishna and its tributaries near west coast, Cauvery and its tributaries near west coast as well as in West flowing rivers between Tadri and Kanyakumari.

Due to the forecast of very heavy rains in and around Mumbai and advance of Southwest monsoon causing tidal waves, there is likelihood of inundation in some of the heavy rainfall affected urban areas of Mumbai City.

Rivers having source in Western Ghats and flowing into Arabian Sea may witness flash floods in association with the forecasted rainfall. Since most of the rivers are dry, necessary precautions to control the activities along the river bed may be taken as flow may increase suddenlydrowning men and materials.

Due to the expected rainfall, River Damanganga and its tributaries are expected to rise in Nasik district of Maharashtra, Valsad district of Gujarat and Daman district in Daman and Diu Union Territory. Since most of the rivers are dry, necessary precautions to control the activities along the river bed may be taken as flow may increase suddenly drowning men and materials.

River Godavari is likely to rise in Upstream reaches in district of Nasik, Ahmednagar and Aurangabad district. Since almost all the dams are in very low level, this rain may give inflows into various upstream reservoirs. River Krishna and its tributaries are likely to rise in upstream districts of Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Sholapur in Maharashtra as well as in Bagalkote, Vijayapura and Kalaburagi districts on Krishna and in Chikmagaluru, Shivamogga and Bellari districts on river Tungabhadra in Karnataka. Since almost all the dams are in very low level, this rain may give inflows into various upstream reservoirs.

Rivers flowing West into Arabian Sea south of Tapi in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka are also likely to rise and inundate areas in Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra and in Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts in Karnataka. Traffic along the old road and rail bridges in Konkan Railway along these river reaches have to be regulated accordingly.

River Cauvery and its tributaries in upstream reaches in Kodagu, Chikmagaluru, Hassan and Mysuru districts of Karnataka and Wynad district of Kerala are likely to rise in association with the forecasted rainfall. However, as the dams in the basins have sufficient storageand hence the expected rainfall may give some inflows into these reservoirs depending on the severity of the rainfall.

Government should support NGOs working for children: SOS Villages global president

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Children are the worst victims of conflicts, natural or man-made disasters and other social upheavals as they are often rendered abandoned and homeless. Securing a future for children without families is only possible when the government extends support to NGOs dealing in such issues, says SOS Children’s Villages International head Siddhartha Kaul.

“There has been a lack of political will in bringing a change towards the status of children and women which at times becomes a little frustrating. No NGO can provide the best care solely. Help from any government is very much necessary,” Kaul told IANS in an interview.

Kaul was initially elected as the president in June 2012 and re-elected for a second four-year term in June 2016. His association with the child care NGO started around 40 years ago when he was appointed Director of the SOS village in Madras, now Chennai.

“We want to partner with anyone who wants to partner us. The approach has to be long-term and for that, support from the central authorities is very important; else it will be difficult to fix the issues. The solutions have to come from the states and not from private houses,” he further added.

According to SOS, migration is the major reason for leaving children homeless. In the recent past, there has been mass migration across Europe and, closer home, the crisis caused by some 600,000 Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh to escape persecution in their native Myanmar.

Talking about offering sustainable solutions to such situations, Kaul said SOS alone could not do so.

“The problems are big; the world is far worse than imagined. We can only present a model of how to take care of a situation. We need to create such conditions in their home countries so that no one has to leave their land,” he noted.

Currently, SOS Children’s Villages International comprises 118 national SOS Children’s Villages associations globally. Its General Assembly, which convenes every four years, is its highest decision-making body.

Talking about major challenges that SOS faces, Kaul stated that improper utilisation of resources has always remained a major area of concern.

“There are countries where there are resources, but they remain unused, whereas there are countries where there are no resources and the demand is huge; the challenge comes in there, like in African countries,” he noted.

According to the UN, globally, there are more than 220 million children living without parental care and need alternative care like foster homes and orphanages, among others.

In India, SOS villages are home to around 17,000 children across 22 states. Apart from financial instability where parents often leave their children at shelter homes, Kaul also pointed that in India, children born out of wedlock is another major reason for children having to live in shelter homes.

“It is very much a social stigma in India. Unmarried woman being pregnant is not accepted in our society. In such cases, the child is left to be brought up in a shelter home. The society’s approach towards women and children needs to be changed,” Kaul contended.

Can a shelter home offer the same atmosphere as that of a proper home?

“An SOS village is the best alternative to a family. We are focused on giving the young souls the value of love and respect and make sure they are brought up in a good environment. Each and every child under our care is being provided with education and employment, leading to sustainable development.”

Asked about his future plans globally, Kaul said reaching out to poorer countries is the prime focus.

“Our target is to continuously grow even if it is minimal. We have plans to invest in poor countries. We want to give sufficient amount of assistance so that the children don’t have to seek refuge in other countries,” he explained.

Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar denied entry into swearing-in ceremony!

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

In a bitter incident which happened at the swearing-in ceremony of new ministers, security staff blocked entry of Assembly Speaker, K R Ramesh Kumar, into Raj Bhavan.

In protest thereof, the Speaker has shot a letter to state chief secretary, K Ratna Prabha.

“In response to your invitation, I had arrived at Raj Bhavan to attend the swearing-in ceremony. I waited for thirty minutes in front of the venue before returning helplessly. I do not know who is responsible for this situation. You might be aware that in addition to the chief minister and chairperson of the ceremony, assembly speaker’s is a constitutional position,” the letter reads in part.

“The government system owes a responsibility to make arrangements for receiving the chairperson of the function and assembly speaker in a way that they are treated with due respect. Arrogance and lack of knowledge of the government officials and haughtiness prevalent within the Raj Bhavan are responsible for these things. Which were the vehicles that had filled the space within and out of the Raj Bhavan? I am curious to know who gave permission to them, and which positions they enjoy in public life. I end my letter by registering my protest against this inexcusable violation,” he stated in his letter.

Some reports said that the Speaker reached the venue little late as he was stuck in heavy traffic. But the officials still failed to make arrangements to take him to the place where the swearing-in was held.

Later the Speaker said that chief secretary and Bengaluru police commissioner phoned him to apologize. “Hence the matter is closed now,” he said.

Only Rs 1.7 lakh cr likely from bankruptcy proceedings: Chidambaram

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

With Union Minister Arun Jaitley declaring all those who owed money to the banks have been declared insolvent and removed from their companies under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, Congress leader P. Chidamabaram said on Wednesday that only Rs 1.7 lakh crore is expected to be recovered out of Rs 4 lakh crore loans involved in the proceedings.

“Out of Rs 4 lakh crore loans involved in Insolvency & Bankruptcy proceedings, only Rs 1.7 lakh crore is expected to be recovered,” Chidambaram said in a tweet.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi had alleged earlier in the day that the Modi government had written off loans worth Rs 2.50 lakh crore of some top industrialists.

Jaitley had responded to Gandhi by stating in an article that the government has not waived of a single rupee due from any industrialist. “Those who owed money to the banks and other creditors have been declared insolvent and removed from their companies by IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code) enacted by Prime Minister Modi’s government. These loans were given largely during the UPA government,” he said.

Chidambaram, who made a series of tweets, also took a dig at government over the low growth rate of credit to industry.

“Credit to industry in 2018 grew at a grand rate of 1 per cent ! Yes, 1 per cent!…Banks will need a further Rs 60,000 crore towards recapitalisation,” he said.

The former Finance Minister also said that the government’s Make in India programme had failed to deliver results in defence production.

Toll in Guatemala volcano eruption reaches 99

June 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The death toll from the eruption of the highly active Fuego volcano in Guatemala has increased to 99 as more bodies were found, according to authorities.

The remains of the 99 people have been sent to the morgues, while just 28 have been identified so far, Guatemala’s National Forensic Sciences Institute (INACIF) announced on Wednesday.

“We already have data with names and locations where there are missing persons and that number is 192,” said Sergio Cabanas, head of Guatemala’s disaster management agency.

Explosions boomed from the 3,763-metre volcano Wednesday, unleashing a new flow of dangerous volcanic material and forcing the rescuers to suspend the search for victims, Xinhua news agency reported.

Experts also warned that heavy rains in the area could provoke avalanches due to the large flows of volcanic mud.

Fuego volcano exploded around noon on June 3, affecting more than 1.7 million people.

A state of disaster has been declared for the southern departments of Escuintla, Sacatepequez, and Chimaltenango, which suffered the most.

“The conditions are critical in the areas near Fuego volcano,” said Eddy Sanchez, Director of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology, adding that initial eruption was the most violent explosion since 1974.

According to volcanologists, eruption records of Fuego volcano, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, dates back to 1542.

At its fiercest, the volcano could spray ash all the way to Guatemala’s southern neighbours of El Salvador and Honduras.
