June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged people to reaffirm the commitment to a cleaner and sustainable planet and pledge to beat the plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is also the theme of the World Environment day, being hosted by India on Tuesday.

“On the World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a cleaner and sustainable planet. India is hosting the global celebrations this year. And we are obligated to bequeathing a greener and eco-friendly legacy to our children,” Kovind said in a tweet.

The Vice President pushed for the plastic ban, saying: “Let us take a pledge to ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme of the World Environment Day today. Time has come for every individual to join the campaign to end single-use plastic and protect the environment.”

Modi also took to Twitter to greet the people. “Together, let us ensure that our future generations live in a clean and green planet, in harmony with nature,” he said in a tweet.

Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar urged people to vow not to use low-grade plastic.

“Fifteen thousand tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day, 9,000 tonnes is collected and recycled, but 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste is not collected and remain littered,” Javadekar said.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasised on raising awareness for “a cleaner and greener environment that can lead us to sustainable development”.

The Congress also took to Twitter, pledging to protect and preserve the Environment, saying, “the Earth doesn’t belong to us but, we belong to the Earth”.

Kerala ‘honour killing’: Assembly disrupted over CBI probe

June 4, 2018 by Nasheman

The opposition disrupted the Kerala Assembly on Monday demanding a CBI probe into the alleged honour killing of a 24-year-old man in Kottayam district for which four policemen have been suspended.

The opening session of the assembly ended early as the Congress-led opposition went up in arms staging protests near the Speaker’s podium, as P. Sreeramakrishnan adjourned the house for the day after quickly running through the listed business.

On 28 May, the Kerala Police had fished out the body of Kevin Joseph, who had married Neenu Chacko, 20, belonging to a higher caste. His autopsy revealed he was tortured to death, allegedly by the bride’s kin.

Replying to an Adjournment Motion moved by Kottayam MLA and senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said strict action has already been initiated against erring police officers. The District Superintendent of Police has also been transferred.

“We see the accused as murderers, most of them have been arrested who were part of the heinous killing of a young man who married, which was not digested by the girl’s family, who resorted to annihilation of the man.

“This is an incident which should never have happened in our state. Already action against the erring policemen have begun. The accused have been arrested and please don’t bring in politics into the case.

“If you do so, then it should be noted that the key accused in the case have Congress affiliations. We see the accused as murderers and there will be no let down in the probe in the case,” said Vijayan.

Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala, however, pointed out that the prime accused in this case was none other than Vijayan, himself, who has been an abject failure as the Home Minister.

“In the past months, Vijayan has apologised for the failure of the police on several occasions and the situation today is it has now become a habit.

“The need of the hour today is to find out the real cause, on what has happened to the Kerala Police. The arrested police officers in this case have now secured bail. The truth in the case will not come out, hence only a CBI probe would suffice,” said Chennithala.

Soon after his speech, the opposition legislators shouting slogans approached the Speaker’s podium, who then adjourned the House.

Those arrested in the case include Neenu Chacko’s father, brother and eight hired killers who were responsible for the abduction and death of Kevin Joseph

Institution of Governor has a pivotal role to play: Modi

June 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Addresses opening session of 49th Governors’ Conference

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the institution of Governor has a pivotal role to play within the federal structure and Constitutional framework of our country.

Addressing the opening session of the 49th Conference of Governors at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday, he spoke at length about how Governors could leverage their experience in different walks of life so that people derive maximum benefit of various central development schemes and initiatives.

He said Governors of States with significant tribal population can help in ensuring that the tribal communities benefit from Government initiatives in fields such as education, sports, and financial inclusion.

He said the tribal communities had played a key role in the freedom struggle, and this should be recognized and recorded for posterity through avenues such as digital museums.

The Prime Minister noted that Governors are also Chancellors of Universities. He said that International Yoga Day on June 21st can be utilized as an opportunity to generate greater awareness about Yoga among the youth. Similarly, he emphasized that Universities can also become the focal point of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Prime Minister mentioned some key themes of development such as the National Nutrition Mission, electrification of villages and development parameters in aspirational districts. He suggested that Governors could also visit a few recently electrified villages to witness first-hand the benefits of electrification.

He said that during the recent Gram Swaraj Abhiyan from 14th April, seven key schemes of the Government were implemented fully in over 16,000 villages. He said that these villages have been freed from seven problems through Jan Bhagidaari. He said Gram Swaraj Abhiyan is now being extended to 65000 more villages, with a target date of 15th August.

He suggested that planning for the 50th Governors’ Conference next year should begin immediately. This effort should focus on making this annual event even more productive.
