Japan floods toll increase to 104

July 9, 2018 by Nasheman

The death toll from devastating floods resulting from torrential rains pounding Japan has increased to 104, with 56 others reported missing, authorities said on Monday.

The rains since July 5, especially in the western prefecture of Hiroshima and the southwestern prefecture of Ehime, caused floods and landslides that destroyed thousands of houses and completely cut off several towns, reports Efe news.

In Hiroshima prefecture, at least 42 people died in accidents caused by the heavy downpour and another three were seriously injured.

Another 23 people were killed in Ehime, according to latest official figures.

Some 73,000 troops of the Japan Self-Defence Forces, police and firefighters are still working on search and rescue operations, said government spokesperson Yoshihide Suga.

Seven helicopters have also been deployed to rescue people, who took shelter on terraces and roofs of buildings to escape the flooding at a press conference.

The search for the missing is underway, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

Over two million people have been asked to evacuate from their homes.

About 364 mm of rain fell in some two hours over the weekend in the city of Uwajima — approximately 1.5 times the average monthly rainfall for July, according to NHK.

Sukumo city in Kochi prefecture received 263 mm of rain in almost the same period of time.

Transportation services have been severely disrupted since the rains began on July 5, with Shinkansen bullet train services partially suspended in most parts of western Japan and major arterial highways partially closed.

Manufacturing was also hit hard by the heavy downpour and flooding, as major carmakers such as Mazda Motor Corp and Mitsubishi Motors Corp and manufacturer such as Panasonic Corp suspending operations at some plants in western Japan.

The rains are the deadliest to hit Japan since August 2014, when 77 people died in Hiroshima.

Rains continue to batter Mumbai, trains delayed

July 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Heavy rains continued to batter Mumbai, its surroundings and large parts of Maharashtra for the third consecutive day, hitting normal life, disrupting rail and road traffic here on Monday, an official said.

The city’s lifeline, the Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) were running late by around 15-20 minutes due to waterlogged tracks at various points on the network, causing misery for millions of morning-peak hour commuters.

The city was lashed with 144.47 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs got 107.21 mm and the western suburbs received 131.32 mm till 8.30 a.m. It has continued with short spells of the break.

After the Gokhale Bridge incident in Andheri which left one woman dead, the WR on Sunday announced continued closure of the northern carriageway and the footpaths — the Kalanagar road overbridge(ROB) – south cantilever portion footpath at Mahim, the old Vasai Road ROB and the skywalk portion at Malad foot overbridge (FOB) as a precautionary measure.

There was waterlogging for the second day in several low-lying areas like Dadar, Sion, Parel, Kurla, Vidyavihar, Andheri, Malad and Jogeshwari suburbs hitting road traffic and pedestrian movements.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the catchment areas of all the lakes supplying drinking water to the city of 18 million, received good rains, bringing a cheer to the Mumbaikars.

In the past 24 hours, Mumbai received an average of 144.3 mm rains, making it one of the wettest spells in the current monsoon, with forecast of heavy to very heavy rains in the entire coastal belt over the next 48 hours till Wednesday, the IMD said.

Since the past 72 hours, six people were killed in rain-related incidents in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) in different districts.

After heavy rains, several big and small rivers, streams and ponds in the tourist hotspots like Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Tansa Forest Sanctuary, Yeoor Hills and other areas in MMR, besides the Vaitarna, Surya and Ulhas Rivers in the MMR, overflowed.

Around a dozen tourists trapped near a swollen waterfall in Ratnagiri were rescued by a group of mountaineers and hikers, and some schools in flood-prone areas have declared a precautionary holiday on Monday.

Gangster shot dead inside UP prison

July 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Dreaded gangster Munna Bajrangi was shot dead inside a high-security prison in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat early on Monday, police said. A judicial probe has been ordered.

The 51-year-old criminal was shot ten times and his body was then dumped into a gutter inside the prison premises, a police officer said.

He was shifted to the Baghpat prison from Jhansi jail late on Sunday for a hearing in a district court.

Bajrangi, whose writ ran large and wide in the eastern part of the state for some three decades, was shifted for hearing in an extortion case filed two years back by former Baghpat legislator Lokesh Dixit.

He was kept in a solitary cell. There were other dreaded mobsters like Vicky Sunehda, Sunil Rathi, also lodged in the same jail.

Bajrangi’s family feared for his life and only 10 days back his wife Seema had requested the judge not to transfer her husband to Baghpat but conduct the hearing through video conferencing.

She alleged that the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police was trying to get Bajrangi eliminated.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the suspension of four prison officials, including the jailor, deputy jailer, following the incident.

He assured that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.

Bajrangi was arrested from Mumbai’s Malad area by the Delhi Police on October 29, 2009 and has been languishing in jails ever since.

He was an accused in the murder of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ram Chandra Singh and legislator Krishnanand Rai besides being accused of many murders, and extortions.

People calling Congress ‘bail gadi’

July 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Attacking the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said people are calling the party “bail gadi” because many of its senior leaders are out on bail in various cases.

“The work which is being done now (by the BJP in the state and at the Centre) could have been done earlier also. You are aware of the intention of the previous governments. It is because of their intentions, the people are now calling the Congress a ‘bail gadi’.

“Many senior Congress leaders and former ministers were out on bail,” Modi said while addressing a public meeting here.

With “bail gadi” sounds like the Hindi word for “bullock cart”, Modi emphasized that by “bail” he was referring to the relief given by courts to senior Congress leaders, who are facing legal battles.

Before addressing the meeting Modi laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects, with a total outlay of over Rs 2,100 crore, including elevated road project for Ajmer, water supply and sewerage projects in Ajmer, Bhilwara, Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Sikar and Mount Abu.

He also said that the central government and the state government were working together for the progress of Rajasthan. The state would face assembly polls later in 2018.

“Never forget the tough circumstances in which Vasundhara Raje took oath in 2013. When she took oath, systems were not working properly. She has changed the work culture in the state.

“The previous government only indulged in laying the foundation stone of the projects and not completing them.

“We are working on ground level not on papers. Our projects are neither delayed nor abandoned. Development is our only agenda,” Modi added.

He also said that farmers, women and Dalits are at the core of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s government schemes.

Thousands return home following ceasefire in Syria

July 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Thousands of displaced people have returned to Syria after negotiations brought about a pause in hostilities following a week-long government offensive aimed at regaining the territory from armed opposition, a UK-based watchdog said on Saturday.

Russian mediators acting on behalf of the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad negotiated a ceasefire with the armed militias in Daraa province, where the UN estimated that some 300,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to intense fighting involving heavy airstrike and artillery campaigns, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

However, the war monitor added that thousands of others whose towns and villages were captured by pro-government troops were reluctant to return for fear of reprisals, reports Efe news.

The SOHR said smoke columns could be seen rising from burning properties the town of Saida, located to the east of Daraa city and was re-captured by government forces this week.

For its part, the Free Syrian Army opposition central command in the region released a statement saying the protection of civilian life was imperative.

Around 159 civilians have been killed by clashes in Daraa since the start of the government offensive, the SOHR said.

At least 20 killed, dozens missing as heavy rain pounds Japan

July 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Dozens of people were still missing and four in critical condition as torrential rain that has killed 20 people pounds western and central Japan, according to local officials.

Intense rainfall triggered huge landslides and flash floods in Hiroshima, Okayama, Kyoto and other regions, while hampering rescue operations.

Local authorities said on Saturday a total of 20 people were killed in rain-related accidents, while public broadcaster NHK said the death toll had risen to 38 with 50 others unaccounted for.

The broadcaster also said that more than 1.6 million people had been ordered to evacuate from their homes.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told his ministers to “make an all-out effort” to rescue victims, saying: “The situation is extremely serious.”

Japan’s Meteorological Agency retained special weather warnings for three prefectures in the main island of Honshu, down from five, and urged vigilance against landslides, rising rivers and strong winds amid what it called “historic” rains.

More rain forecasted
Although a weather front had settled between western and eastern Japan, there was a risk that heavy rains would continue as warm air flowed towards the front with already-saturated areas facing more rain on Sunday, the agency said.

In Motoyama, a town on Shikoku island about 600 km from Tokyo, 583 millimetres of rain fell between Friday and Saturday mornings.

Minako Sakurai, an agency official, told reporters heavy rain was expected to continue until Sunday in western and eastern Japan.

Some areas have been hit by more than a metre of rainfall, according to the government.

In Hiroshima, the body of a man in his 60s was found near a bridge early Saturday and another man was killed when a mudslide struck his house, a local government official said.

A 52-year-old woman in Kyoto was found dead by a river on Friday, while in neighbouring Hyogo prefecture a construction worker was swept away by flood waters and died.

Television footage showed a wooden bridge being washed away in Hiroshima by a rain-swollen muddy river.

Rescue workers dug into the dirt as landslides crushed houses in the same region, while several people evacuated to their rooftops as floods swamped entire residential areas in part of the Okayama region.

Yoshihide Suga, chief cabinet secretary, said that about 48,000 troops, police and firefighters have been deployed for rescue operations.

Although Japan is among the most modernised of Asian nations, rural areas are hit hard by the rainy season each year, often resulting in casualties and heavy damage.

Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in jail

July 7, 2018 by Nasheman

An anti-corruption court in Islamabad on July 6 sentenced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison. His daughter Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in jail and and son-in-law captain (retired) Safdar awarded one-year jail term.

The court also imposed a fine of £8 million on Mr. Sharif and £2 million on Ms. Maryam.

The Sharifs’ lawyers said they would challenge the ruling in High Court.

Accountability Court judge Mohammed Bashir also rejected an application from the Sharifs to postpone the announcement of the verdict as Mr. Sharif is currently with his wife Kulsoom Nawaz in London who is on ventilator for the past three weeks.

“In the interest of justice, the announcement of order in the titled reference may be postponed for a minimum of seven days period,” the applications by the Sharifs stated.

Mr. Sharif had vowed to return to the country once his wife’s health improves.

Mr. Sharif was disqualified as Prime Minister in July 2017 by the Supreme Court following a challenge to his office by Opposition leader Imran khan on the basis of publication of the Panama Papers, which alleged that the Sharif family stashed away assets in London through offshore companies Nescoll and Nelson. The companies are owned by Mr. Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz. Assets in question are four expensive flats in London worth over £200 million.

Mr. Hussain Nawaz admitted ownership of the flats but denied that they were purchased through corruption money. He never appeared before the accountability court despite several notices. He has been declared a proclaimed offender.

Sharif defiant
Sharif, referring to the imprisonment handed to him, said that he has been punished because he tried to turn the course of Pakistan’s 70-year history. “I promise that I will continue this struggle until Pakistanis are not free of the chains that they are kept in for saying the truth,” Press Trust of India news agency quoted a defiant Sharif as telling reporters in London. “I will continue my struggle till the people of Pakistan are not freed of the slavery imposed on them by some generals and judges.”

Removed as head of PML-N
Mr. Nawaz Sharf, a three-time Prime Minister, was removed as head of the Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) by the Election Commission following his disqualification by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court disqualified him as not being truthful in his tax returns by not showing a salary as board of chairman of a Dubai-based company. But it instructed the Accountability Court to complete the probe on his assets in six months. The Accountability Court judge sought three extensions from the apex court before completing the probe last week after more than nine months.

The PML-N has termed the trial political victimization.

Pakistan is going to the polls on July 25. The convictions are a huge setback to the ruling PML-N, which has accused the country’s powerful military establishment of conspiring against the party by forcing its candidates to switch sides and join the Opposition or contest elections as independents.

The PML-N held a meeting in Lahore to discuss the court ruling and reaction to it. The party is now headed by Mr. Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shahbaz Sharif.

‘A black ruling’
Mr. Shahbaz Sharif termed the accountability court ruling a black judgment. “People will always remember this judgment as black and controversial. We will fight in higher courts to reverse this judgment. The timing of the judgment is an attempt to influence the upcoming elections,” he said at a press conference in Lahore. He said Mr. Nawaz Sharif had served the country three times as Prime Minister and what he got in return was a black judgment.

Imran Khan welcomes the ruling
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan welcomed the court ruling and termed it a historic judgment, which would serve as a deterrent to corruption in the country. “Sharif brothers [indulged in] corruption for decades and destroyed the institutions. For the first time, a powerful person has been sentenced, which is unprecedented,” he said at a rally in Swat.
