Indian businesses worried over data privacy, cyber security: Dell survey

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Terming data privacy and cyber security concerns as biggest barriers to digital transformation, almost half of Indian businesses say they will struggle to meet changing customer demands within five years, a survey by Dell Technologies revealed on Tuesday.

The other half of Indian businesses believe they will disrupt rather than be disrupted, said Dell Technologies’ “Digital Transformation Index” completed in collaboration with Intel.

“It’s an exciting time to be in business. However, only technology-centred organisations will reap the rewards offered by a digital business model, including the ability to monetise the data, identify actionable insights, move quickly and automate everything to delight customers,” said Rajesh Janey, President and MD – India Enterprise, Dell EMC.

Nearly 12 per cent of Indian businesses are digital leaders — 5 per cent more than the percentage of digital leaders in China, said the survey.

“A quarter (25 per cent) of Indian businesses fear their organisation will get left behind within five years while 38 per cent of business leaders are worried they’ll be left behind,” it added.

According to the research, 93 per cent of Indian businesses are facing major impediments to digital transformation.

The top five barriers to digital transformation are: data privacy and cybersecurity concerns, regulation or legislative changes, lack of the right in-house skill sets and expertise, information overload and weak digital governance and structure.

Dell Technologies and Intel surveyed business leaders from 42 countries and benchmarked 4,600 businesses for the survey.

MPs/MLAs can continue to practice as advocates: SC

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea seeking a ban on members of Parliament and legislative assemblies from practising as advocates.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar dismissed the plea saying there is no bar on lawyers, who are members of Parliament or an assembly, from practising in court during their tenure as lawmakers.

There is no rule of Bar Council of India (BCI) or law that bars them from practicing in court, the bench said.

The court’s verdict came on a plea filed by advocate and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay contending that MPs/MLAs practising as advocates pose a conflict of interest under the provisions of the Advocates Act, 1961, and the Bar Council of India Rules.

The plea had sought a ban on legislators practising as advocates for the period that they occupy such positions, contending that the dual role would also amount to professional misconduct when MPs and MLAs, who get salary and other benefits from public funds appear against the government as lawyers.

Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, P. Chidambaram, K.T.S. Tulsi, Pinaki Misra, Meenakshi Lekhi, and K. Parasaran are among the parliamentarians who also practise as advocates.

Adobe, Microsoft and SAP announce Open Data Initiative

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

In an effort to empower companies to derive more value from their data and deliver better customer experiences, Adobe, Microsoft and SAP have introduced the Open Data Initiative (ODI).

Announced at the “Microsoft Ignite” conference here late on Monday, the initiative will enhance data exchange between the applications and platforms offered by the three companies.

“Together with Adobe and SAP, we are taking a first, critical step to helping companies achieve a level of customer and business understanding that has never before been possible,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“Organisations everywhere have a massive opportunity to build AI-powered digital feedback loops for predictive power, automated workflows and, ultimately, improved business outcomes,” he added.

Companies around the world use software and services from Adobe, Microsoft and SAP to run product development, operations, finance, marketing, sales, human resources and more.

The core focus of the Open Data Initiative is to eliminate data silos and enable a single view of the customer, helping companies to better govern their data and support privacy and security initiatives.

“Adobe, Microsoft and SAP are partnering to reimagine the customer experience management category,” said Shantanu Narayen, CEO, Adobe.

“Together, we will give enterprises the ability to harness and action massive volumes of customer data to deliver personalised, real-time customer experiences at scale,” he added.

According to Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, the three companies understand that the customer experience is no longer a sales management conversation.

With the open data initiative, we will help businesses run with a true single view of the customer,” said McDermott.

Patna doctors’ strike enters 2nd day, 12 patients dead

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A strike called by junior doctors of a hospital here entered the second day on Tuesday even as 12 patients died in the last 24 hours, officials said.

The doctors from the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) began their strike on Monday after one of their colleagues was assaulted by family members of a patient.

“Doctors are not attending patients in wards as they continued to stay off duty. Patients are now being looked after by nurses and para-medical staff,” an official said.

The protesting doctors have demanded a security cover during duty hours and action against misbehaving patients’ families.

The doctors have said that they would not end their strike on mere assurances by the state government.

The strike has left hundreds of patients, many of them in a serious condition, in trouble.

Kavanaugh denies sexual misconduct in TV interview

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

US President Donald Trump’S Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh repeatedly denied accusations of sexual misconduct that have threatened to derail his confirmation in an exclusive interview with Fox News.

“What I know is the truth, and the truth is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone,” Kavanaugh said in the interview on Monday night.

Kavanaugh’s wife, Ashley, said the allegations against her husband were “hard to believe”.

“I know Brett. I’ve known him for 17 years… He’s decent, he’s kind, he’s good. I know his heart. This is not consistent with Brett,” she said.

California professor Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of covering her mouth and trying to remove her clothing at a party in the early 1980s, when both were in high school.

Kavanaugh and Ford are set to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

In the interview, Kavanaugh emphatically denied Ford’s claim against him, saying that he was “never at any such party”.

Kavanaugh added that he was “not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone”.

He also denied a New Yorker report published on Sunday night in which classmate Deborah Ramirez said he exposed himself to her while they were students at Yale.

“I never did any such thing,” Kavanaugh told Fox News.

“The other people alleged to be there don’t recall any such thing. If such a thing had happened, it would have been the talk of campus.”

Top Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have slammed what they described as a “smear campaign” orchestrated in part by Democrats.

Trump has also repeatedly defended his nominee against sexual misconduct accusations, which he has called “totally political” and “one of the single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate for anything”.

Kavanaugh said in the interview that Trump had called him on Monday afternoon to say “he’s standing by me” and said he was confident that will remain the case.

Woman shot dead in US city

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A woman was shot dead in the US city of Boston, leading to an extensive manhunt for her estranged husband who had allegedly chased her in a motor vehicle before the deadly attack.

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz identified Allen Warner, 47, the woman’s “soon to be ex-husband”, as a person of interest in the shooting which took place on Monday evening on Main Street in Marshfield, reports The Boston Globe daily.

Warner is “considered armed and dangerous”, Cruz told the media on Monday night.

Cruz asked for the public’s help in finding Warner, who the police believe was driving a gray 2013 Toyota Corolla with a Massachusetts license plate.

The woman, believed to be in her late 30s, was taken to South Shore Hospital with a gunshot wound, where she was pronounced dead.

No weapons were recovered at the scene, authorities said.

YouTube sensation Lilly Singh tells UN to empower youth

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

At the UN where often aging politicians and diplomats hold forth on global issues, for a change young YouTube sensation Lilly Singh took the stage to remind them that the future belonged to the youth and they have the key to solving the world’s problem.

When investments are made in educating the youth, “they become the beacon of light the world needs”, Singh, who is also the Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, told the audience of world leaders and youth at the high-level Youth2030 event on Monday.

Singh, who is a Canadian of Indian descent, has over 11 million followers on YouTube, has authored the bestseller, “How To Be A Bawse”, has a role in HBO’s film adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451” and tops the Forbes Magazine Top Influencers List in the entertainment category.

The event saw the launch of the UN Youth Strategy of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Singh said that the world was moving so fast that the platform that brought her fame, YouTube, did not exist 30 years ago.

As someone who did not face poverty, conflict or displacement and found success, she said that when she compared herself to other young people, “I practically feel I won the lottery.”

All young people should have access to education and technology, she said.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim recalled that the watchwords of the rebellious youth of the 1960s and 1970s were “Don’t trust anyone over 30”.

“Don’t trust us,” he said, on education spending or climate change. “Make the decision for the world you want to live in.”

Guterres said that through Youth2030 — the UN’s strategy is to engage with and empower young people — “I want the UN to become a leader in working with young people: in understanding their needs, in helping to put their ideas into action, in ensuring their views inform our processes.”

He said: “Too often, young people are excluded by development programmes; ignored in peace negotiations; denied a voice and a seat at the table. At the same time, young people are a vast source of innovation, ideas and solutions.”

It will “open new routes to engage and involve young people, and amplify their voices,” he added.
