Toll rises to 37 from storm Florence in US East Coast

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

The death toll from storm Florence has risen to at least 37 in the US East Coast, including two mental health patients drowned in a van overtaken by floodwaters, the media reported on Wednesday.

The two patients died on Tuesday after the vehicle carrying them, staffed by two Horry County deputies in South Carolina, was swept away by flooding from Florence, the Horry County Sheriff’s Office confirmed, Xinhua reported.

“Despite persistent and ongoing efforts, floodwater rose rapidly and the deputies were unable to open the doors to reach the individuals inside the van,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump visited storm-ravaged North Carolina on Wednesday, while the state’s governor, Roy Cooper, pleaded with thousands of evacuees not to return home just yet, warning the flooding is far from over and will get worse in some places.

“I know for many people this feels like a nightmare that just won’t end,” Cooper said. Florence has claimed at least 27 lives in North Carolina.

Across Carolinas on Wednesday, many roads remained closed and thousands of people lack power. The risk of environmental damage also mounted, as human and animal waste was washed into floodwaters, local media reported.

Rivers are still rising in South Carolina and will continue throughout the week, the state’s Emergency Response Team said Wednesday morning.

North Carolina farms lost an estimated 3.4 million poultry birds and 5,500 pigs, while South Carolina cotton farmers were also hit hard as soaked ground could damage peanut crops, and hemp stems were reported blown over, local media said.

More than 15,000 people remain in shelters and more than 200,000 customers are without power across North Carolina because of Florence, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning, according to state officials.

Though Florence weakened to a tropical storm later on Friday and to a tropical depression afterwards, it caused severe flooding and damage.

India girls beat Pakistan in AFC U-16 Women’s Championship qualifier

September 19, 2018 by Nasheman

The India U-16 girls football team beat arch-rivals Pakistan 4-0 in the ongoing AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Qualifier at the MFF Stadium here on Wednesday.

While Avika Singh (22nd minute) opened the scoring for India, the Pakistani goalie Ayesha (43rd) conceded an own goal at the stroke of half-time.

Sunita Munda (82nd) added another to get herself on the scoresheet, whereas skipper Shilky Devi (88th) wrapped it up in style.

Following the win, India are firmly seated at the top of Group B, having collected six points from two matches.

Sunita, Shilky and Avika combined well to wreak havoc on the arch-rivals but the Pakistani defenders soaked in the pressure until the 22nd minute when Avika notched the opening goal for India.

Sunita breezed past the left-back to deliver a low cross for Avika, whose well-timed tap-in earned India the lead.

Pakistan were happy to sit back in their own half and defend. Goalkeeper Ayesha made some exquisite saves during the course of the game but a miscued effort from her in the 41st minute landed inside the goal to hand India a 2-0 lead.

After the changeover, India continued to mount more pressure on Pakistan. The third goal came in the 82nd minute when Sunita, the architect of Avika’s goal, got her name on the score sheet.

Six minutes later, skipper Shilky latched on to another attack down the middle and kept her calm to score the fourth goal of the game.

India are scheduled to take on hosts Mongolia in their next match, two days later.

Senior congress party leaders to meet Rahul Gandhi today

September 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, who heads the coordination committee of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government, today rubbished reports of dissent in the Congress and said media reports of it were ‘baseless.’

“There is nothing, no discord. Whatever is coming in the media does not have even an iota of truth…. It is totally baseless,” he told reporters after meeting the Jarkiholi brothers.

Congress has been hit by internal dissent, triggered by a faction of MLAs led by minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, who is locked in a turf war with another minister DK Shivakumar. The Jarkiholi brothers’ activities have led to speculations that BJP was fishing in troubled waters and was in touch with them to dislodge the government.

The siblings are upset over Shivakumar allegedly trying to challenge their supremacy in Belagavi district through MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar. Siddaramaiah said there are six ministerial posts to be filled and many aspirants for the posts, leading to speculation in the media about dissidence in the party.

The former chief minister claimed that BJP was trying to destabilise the government as many MLAs have said that some people from BJP had approached them. “It is true that the BJP is trying to destabilise this government. They have given up all the civility to come to power.

There is no discord in our party,”Siddaramaiah asserted. The chief minister said he along with Satish Jarkiholi and senior party functionaries would leave for Delhi Wednesday to meet party chief Rahul Gandhi to hold discussions on filling the six ministerial posts. Tomorrow, I will not discuss about the cabinet expansion. We will expand the cabinet at an appropriate time…nobody has complained about the delay in expanding the ministry,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Satish Jarkiholi called on chief minister HD Kumaraswamy. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Jarkiholi said he had discussions about issues pertaining to the development of Belagavi and his community and nominations to the boards, corporations and the legislative council.

Another demand discussed was that one person from the scheduled tribe from Ballari should be made a minister. “There is no discord as being made out,” he said.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb gave the judgment on petitions filed by three challenging the July verdict against them in the Avenfield case, Geo News reported.

The reference pertained to the Sharifs’ purchase of four upmarket flats in Avenfield House, London. The three were convicted by an anti-corruption court in Pakistan of not being able to prove the source of assets used to purchase the properties.

A large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including its President Shehbaz Sharif, leaders Pervaiz Rashid and Khurram Dastgir, were present in the courtroom and cheered as the judgment was announced.

Following the judgment, Senator Chaudhary Tanvir submitted bail bonds for the three at the deputy registrar’s office.
