BJP blames JDS-Cong for defeat in Karnataka civic polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday blamed Karnataka’s ruling coalition partners Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) for its defeat in the state civic polls held across 22 districts.

“The BJP should have won more seats but we could not perform the way we wanted to because of the Congress-JD-S coalition,” BJP state unit President B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

The party, however, is confident of winning a majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Yeddyurappa said.

“People’s mandate is with the BJP and we are confident of a majority in the next year’s general election,” he added.

In the civic body polls held on August 31, the BJP won 929 seats, with a majority in seven districts including coastal regions of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, while the Congress won 982 seats with a majority in 10 districts including the northern region of the state.

The civic election verdict shows the BJP performed well in its traditional bastions of coastal districts while Congress retained its position in its strongholds of northern districts.

The ruling coalition partner JD-S, on the other hand, won 375 seats getting a majority in its strongholds of Hassan, Mandya and Tumakuru districts.

As Kerala is slowly coming to terms with the devastating floods which wreaked havoc in the state, a new problem is rearing its head. Over 20 people have reportedly died due to Rat Fever, also known as leptospirosis. Representational Image Leptospirosis is an infection caused by corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Leptospira.

Rats, mice, and moles are important primary hosts of this bacteria. The incidence of leptospirosis correlates directly with the amount of rainfall, making it seasonal in temperate climates and year-round in tropical climates. Kozhikode has registered a total of 17 leptospirosis deaths from August 1 to September 2 which include six confirmed and 11 suspected deaths. On Sunday, four deaths including two confirmed and two suspected were reported from the district,

Minister for Labour and Excise T.P. Ramakrishnan told the media after a review meeting that an 85-bed isolation ward would be set up at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, and special facilities were being provided at the Government General Hospital in Kozhikode and government hospitals in Vadakara, Koyilandy, and Feroke as part of efforts to contain the outbreak, a report by The Hindu said.

Health Minister K.K. Shailaja advised people in the flood-hit areas to take precautions. She said contagious diseases were on the rise in post-flood Kerala. On Saturday, three north-central districts and low-lying Alappuzha reported a total of nine casualties due to the Rat Fever. Last month, 559 people took treatment for rat fever across the state. Of them, the disease was confirmed in 229 cases. In April-May this year, Kerala saw an outbreak of Nipah virus which claimed around 25 lives.

How does Rat Fever or Leptospirosis spread? Leptospirosis is transmitted by the urine of an infected animal and is contagious as long as the urine is still moist. Although Leptospira has been detected in reptiles and birds, only mammals are able to transmit the bacterium to humans and other animals. Rats, mice, and moles are important primary hosts-but a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, swine, raccoons, opossums, skunks, and certain marine mammals carry and transmit the disease as secondary hosts. In Africa, the banded mongoose has been identified as a carrier of the pathogen, likely in addition to other African wildlife hosts. Dogs may lick the urine of an infected animal off the grass or soil, or drink from an infected puddle. The type of habitats most likely to carry infective bacteria includes muddy riverbanks, ditches, gullies, and muddy livestock rearing areas where there is a regular passage of wild or farm mammals. The incidence of leptospirosis correlates directly with the amount of rainfall, making it seasonal in temperate climates and year-round in tropical climates. Leptospirosis also transmits via the semen of infected animals.

Humans become infected through contact with water, food, or soil that contains urine from these infected animals. This may happen by swallowing contaminated food or water or through skin contact. The disease is not known to spread between humans, and bacterial dissemination in convalescence is extremely rare in humans.

79 prisoners agree to release on Gandhi Jayanthi

The governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala agreed to release the 79 prisoners before completing their jail term who maintained good behaviour while imprisoned.

According to the sources in the state Home department, the department of prisons had submitted a list of 107 prisoners for the early release. The home department shortlisted 93 names and sent it for the approval of the governor. The governor’s office agreed for the early release the 79 prisoners.

“A final list expected to be made public in next couple of days. All these prisoners will be released on October 2,” said an officer.

BJP MLA’s son threatens to shoot Jyotiraditya Scindia

BJP MLA Uma Devi Khatik’s son Princedeep Lalchand Khatik, in a social media post on Monday, threatened to shoot Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Lalchand Khatik wrote in a Facebook post: “Jyotiraditya Scindia, you have Jiwajirao’s blood running in your veins, who killed Jhansi ki Rani. If you step in Hatta then I will shoot you. Either you will die or I will.”

His statement comes ahead of Scindia’s scheduled visit to Hatta district to hold a rally on September 5.

Uma Devi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Madhya Pradesh’s Hatta Vidhan Sabha constituency told IANS: “This post is unfortunate. Scindia is a respectable MP. I will ask my son to remove the post.”

Former Congress Minister Raja Pateriya called Scindia the most liked person in India. Scared of his immense popularity, the BJP is making baseless accusations against him.

He said that the police should conduct an immediate inquiry into the matter and step up security to Scindia.

Asian Games: Odisha govt announces Rs 50 lakh each for Birendra, Amit

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced a cash award of Rs 50 lakh each for the two Odia players Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas for winning bronze medal at 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.

Both were part of the Indian men’s hockey team that won bronze medal by thrashing Pakistan.

The Chief Minister also congratulated the Indian men’s hockey team for winning the bronze medal.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 crore each for four women hockey players from the state for winning silver medal at Asian Games.

The cash award was announced for Sunita Lakra, Namita Toppo, Nilima Minz and Deep Grace Ekka, who were part of Indian Women’s Hockey team.

The state government had also announced Rs 3 crore for sprinter Dutee Chand, who won double silver medals in 100m and 200m events.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in Damascus for Assad talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has arrived in Damascus for talks with Syrian government officials, the privately owned Tasnim news agency reported.

The top Iranian diplomat is scheduled to hold talks with President Bashar al-Assad and Prime Minister Imad Khamis on bilateral relations and the latest developments in Syria, the agency said.

Zarif’s visit on Monday comes after Amar Hatami, Iran’s defence minister, travelled to Damascus and signed an agreement for defence cooperation with his Syrian counterpart Ali Abdullah Ayoub. Hatami also met Assad duding his trip.

Iranian forces have backed Assad in the country’s seven-year-old civil war.

Tehran has provided steady political, financial, and military support to the government during this period.

‘Iranian advisers to stay’
Separately, Iran’s military attache to Damascus told Iranian media on Tuesday that the country’s military advisers would remain in Syria under a defence agreement signed this week.

“The continued presence of Iran’s advisers in Syria is one of the areas covered in the defensive-technical agreement between Tehran and Damascus,” said Brigadier-General Abolghasem Alinejad last Tuesday, according to the Fars and Tabnak news agencies.

Russia and Iran, which support Assad, and Turkey have been in close cooperation over Syria in order to find a solution to the conflict.

Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents are scheduled to meet in Tehran to discuss the latest developments in Syria in early September.

Since Russia military intervened on Assad’s behalf in 2015, the regime has regained much of the territory lost to fighters in the early years of the war.

Syria’s war has left more than 350,000 people dead and displaced millions since it broke out with the brutal repression of an initially peaceful uprising in 2011.

Heavy rains lash UP

Heavy rains lashed the Uttar Pradesh capital and its neighbouring areas on Monday affecting normal life as people braced for the Janmashtami celebrations.

It was overcast and windy since morning. At around 11 a.m. it started raining heavily in and around Lucknow, which continued for more than two hours. Many localities were left waterlogged.

Water entered the houses in many places in old Lucknow, Sapru Marg, Narahi, Hariharnagar, Mulayamnagar, Jankipuram, Dubagga and low lying areas in Gomtinagar. Most of it was due to blocked drains, residents said.

Even major roads, intersections were flooded with rain water, bringing the traffic to a halt.

Many people out shopping for Lord Krishna’s birthday on Janmashtami were caught in the heavy downpour. Large crowds gathered under flyovers.

Electricity was deliberately cut off in some areas to avoid accidents, while there were some “technical snags” as well as power cuts were reported from many areas.

Rains were also reported from Barabanki, Pratapgarh, Unnao, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad among others.

Most parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Noida, Greater Noida, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat and Meerut received heavy rains since morning. Even the parched district of Bundelkhand was lashed by heavy downpour.

The Regional Met Office has predicted thundershowers and more rains across the state in the next 48 hours till Wednesday.

Three persons were killed in a car pile up in Moradabad due to heavy rains in the regions, police said.

The vehicles skidded and rammed into each other on the Dalpatpur-Kashipur road, killing the three on the spot. Two others were also critically injured.

Bengaluru boy dies following attack by stray dogs

The 11-year-old boy who was attacked by stray dogs earlier this week succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Praveen, a sixth standard student, was reportedly on his way home from school in the afternoon when he was attacked by a pack of ten dogs at Vibhutipura.

Manipal Hospital in a press release stated that the boy who was admitted in the Paediatric ICU died at 8.30 p.m. “He was on advanced life support systems including ECMO and CRRT. He had septic shock and multi-organ failure,” Dr.Anoop Amarnath, Chief of Clinical Services, Manipal Hospital, said.

The HAL police had arrested an assistant director and senior inspector in the BBMP’s animal husbandry department for alleged negligence.

BBMP has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

Bengaluru City Police control room gets 30-40 crank calls a day

Bengaluru City Police isn’t a stranger to crank calls. After the recent bomb scare at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), which resulted in a two-hour flight delay of flights, City Express decided to look into the number of the crank and hoax calls received by the Police Control Room (PCR) daily.

According to data received by the City Crime Records Bureau (CCRB) and the PCR, per day, out of 1,663 total calls received on average under the crank call category, at least 30-40 calls are crank calls, while the rest are accidental, blank calls from residents. In addition, these kinds of calls come in from around 9pm to 1am every day. The number of calls doubles during the weekends, according to ACP of Police Control Room, K Ajay Kumar.

Within four bomb hoax calls are received in a year. “In most cases, the person is either mentally unstable or is on drugs or alcohol. They are either sent to rehabilitation centres or given a stern warning,” says Kumar. Multiple crank calls from the same person results in the blocking of the number, and the caller will have to visit the station, explain his action and provide an apology letter, after which his number may be unblocked.

On Tuesday, KIA had received another bomb scare from a 34-year-old MBA graduate from Udupi. The man arrested will have to apply for bail, but if rejected, he may face up to three years imprisonment. Kumar stated that they had received similar calls from him three times in July as well.

Bomb squad, police, fire dept alerted

Once control room operators receive a call, the information is directed to the Bomb Squad. The area’s police station is also alerted. Simultaneously, the caller’s details are forwarded to the technical team to ensure the genuineness of the information provided. The area’s local ambulance and fire department are also given a heads up. “We cannot take any chances with these cases, so every time we get such calls, we follow the usual procedure to ensure the safety of people,” says Kumar.

Psychologically speaking Psychiatrist at Sakra

World Hospital, Dr Naveen Jayaram, says that the reason behind such calls could be high novelty seeking and externalising traits or thrill-seeking, which causes an increase in dopamine levels in the brain. Other reasons could be the person facing extreme trouble with authorities and is unable to handle the stress, hence anger turns inward. In these cases, the patient is usually treated for 10-20 days, depending
on his response.
