Kerala cop involved in murder, kills self

November 13, 2018 by Nasheman

A senior Kerala Police officer who was eluding arrest after causing a man’s death a week back, on Tuesday was found hanging in his home in Kollam district, police said.

The deceased, B. Harikumar, who was the Neyattinkara Deputy Superintendent of Police, has been on the run since November 5 night when he pushed electrician Sanal Kumar, following an altercation.

Kumar fell on the road and was crushed by a speeding car. Harikumar was eluding arrest for the past eight days since the incident on the outskirts here.

Kumar’s wife, Viji, who was on a day-long protest seeking justice at the same spot where her husband came under the vehicle, reacted to Harikumar’s suicide: “God’s verdict has come” and ended her agitation.

Harikumar’s bail plea was supposed to come up at a lower court on Wednesday. There were widespread allegations that the police was helping Harikumar to dodge arrest.

People questioned how could Harikumar reach his Kallambalam home while the police were trying to nab him.

The deceased electrician’s wife had earlier demanded a CBI or court-managed probe because she feared that there would not be any justice as Harikumar’s colleagues would turn the murder into a road accident.

Kumar’s sister Sajitha said though the prime culprit was dead, but all those who tried to help Harikumar must face punishment.

The incident occurred at Neyattinkara when Harikumar was in civilian dress and reportedly visiting a woman friend. Kumar was trying to take out his vehicle. It was a parking row that led to Kumar’s death.

Eye-witnesses and Kumar’s kin alleged that the injured electrician was not immediately rushed to the hospital. He died as police was dropping off officers to police station instead of taking Kumar to the nearest emergency.

Kumar was declared brought dead.

Rahul slams Modi over demonetisation, calls him a ‘thief’

November 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comment that demonetisation led to crackdown on shell firms, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday said it takes a “thief to know a thief”.

Gandhi’s remarks came after Modi targeted the Congress for criticising demonetisation, saying the move had let to closure of over three lakh shell companies.

Rahul took to Twitter saying the only shell companies identified after “the great demonetisation tragedy” belonged to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Reliance Group chairperson Anil Ambani.

“Ironically, the only ‘shell’ firms identified after the great demonetisation tragedy are: Jay Shah’s Temple Enterprises, Piyush Goyal’s Flashnet and Anil Ambani’s Reliance Airports,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

“It takes a thief to know a thief,” he added.

The government is facing heavy criticism from the opposition parties for its demonetisation decision which completed two years last week.

WhatsApp selects 20 teams to curb fake news globally, including India

November 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Facebook-owned WhatsApp on Tuesday announced that it has selected 20 research teams worldwide – including experts from India and those of Indian origin — who will work towards how misinformation spreads and what additional steps the mobile messaging platform could take to curb fake news.

Shakuntala Banaji from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Anushi Agrawal and Nihal Passanha from Bengaluru-based media and arts collective “Maraa” and Ramnath Bhat from LSE have been selected for the paper titled “WhatsApp Vigilantes? WhatsApp messages and mob violence in India”.

The research examines the ways in which WhatsApp users understand and find solutions to the spate of “WhatsApp lynchings” that has killed over 30 people so far.

The Indian government has also directed WhatsApp to take necessary remedial measures to prevent proliferation of fake and, at times, motivated/sensational messages on its platform.

Among others selected were Vineet Kumar from Ranchi-headquartered Cyber Peace Foundation (principal investigator), Amrita Choudhary, President of the Delhi-based non-profit Cyber Café Association of India (CCAOI) and Anand Raje from Cyber Peace Foundation.

They will work as a team on the paper titled “Digital literacy and impact of misinformation on emerging digital societies”.

P.N. Vasanti from Centre for Media Studies in New Delhi woll work withS. Shyam Sundar, The Pennsylvania State University (Principal Investigator) to examine the role of content modality in vulnerability to misinformation, under the topic titled “Seeing is Believing: Is Video Modality More Powerful in Spreading Fake News?”

WhatsApp had issued a call for papers in July this year and received proposals from over 600 research teams around the world.

“Each of the 20 research teams will receive up to $50,000 for their project (for a total of $1 million),” WhatsApp said in a statement.

Lipika Kamra from O.P. Jindal Global University and Philippa Williams from the Queen Mary University of London (Principal Investigator) will examine the role of WhatsApp in everyday political conversations in India, in the context of India’s social media ecosystem.

According to Mrinalini Rao, lead researcher at WhatsApp, the platform cares deeply about the safety of its over 1.5 billion monthly active users globally and over 200 million users in India.

“We appreciate the opportunity to learn from these international experts about how we can continue to help address the impact of misinformation,” Rao said.

“These studies will help us build upon recent changes we have made within WhatsApp and support broad education campaigns to help keep people safe,” she added.

The recipients are from countries including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Singapore, Spain, the UK and US.

WhatsApp said it is hosting them in California this week so they can hear from product leaders about how it builds its product.

“Given the nature of private messaging – where 90 per cent of the messages sent are between two people and group sizes are strictly limited – our focus remains on educating and empowering users and proactively tackling abuse,” said the company.

WhatsApp recently implemented a “forward label” to inform users when they received a message that was not originally written by their friend or loved one. To tackle abuse, WhatApp has also set a limit on how many forwards can be sent.

In India, WhatsApp has partnered with the Digital Empowerment Foundation to train community leaders in several states on how to address misinformation.

“We are also running ads in several languages — in print, online, and on over 100 radio stations — amounting to the largest public education campaign on misinformation anywhere in the world,” the company noted.

Sayan Banerjee from University of Essex, Srinjoy Bose from University of New South Wales and Robert A. Johns from University of Essex will study “Misinformation in Diverse Societies, Political Behaviour & Good Governance”.

Santosh Vijaykumar from Northumbria University, Arun Nair from Health Systems Research India Initiative and Venkat Chilukuri, Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology are part of the team that will study “Misinformation Vulnerabilities among Elderly during Disease Outbreaks”.

Karanvir’s wife wants clarity from ‘Bigg Boss’ over show’s double standards

November 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Television actor Karanvir Bohra’s wife Teejay Sidhu has issued a letter to the “Bigg Boss” team asking them not to shame and mock Karanvir on “Weekend ka War” episodes.

Karanvir is locked away in the “Bigg Boss 12″ house and according to Teejay, he is one of the most targeted contestants by makers and host Salman Khan (though she didn’t directly mention Salman’s name)

” ..It seems you (Bigg Boss team) are upset with Karanvir (aka KV in the house) about something, but we don’t know what. Every weekend, KV is ridiculed and it is hard to see him being demoralized like this,” her letter read.

She also mentioned that the makers have double standards when it comes to taking action against a particular contestant.

Citing example, she said: “When people made fun of Rohit’s (co-contestant) purple shorts, they were questioned about it… Whatever KV wears, he is always ridiculed, whether it’s his hair, his clothes, his look. It is wrong to shame someone for the way they look, or how they dress.”

In more to Karanvir’s defence, Teejay praised him saying, he has always given his best in tasks and he has never abused anyone.

She urged the “Bigg Boss” team not to pull Karanvir’s leg to extreme level and reminded them that such behavior towards him is not acceptable as he was a father of two little daughters.

“His entertainment fraternity is also deeply upset about all this. Please understand I am writing to you out of concern, and with utmost respect. I would be very grateful to get some clarity on this. I have many people to answer to,” Teejay added.
