The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Enforcement

IISc blast: 2 professors booked for negligence, police say security protocol breached

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

A day after the explosion at the IISc’s Aerospace Engineering Department’s Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shock Wave Research in Bengaluru, the police have booked two professors for criminal negligence.

On Thursday, the security chief of IISc, Chandrashekhar, filed a complaint with the Sadashivnagar Police against professors G Jagadeesh and KPJ Reddy, claiming that they were in charge of the lab and were responsible for ensuring that the equipment being used was safe.

“The family members complained that the institute should have ensured that experiments were being conducted in a safe environment. He (Chandrashekhar) has also stated that several faculty members were of the opinion that the expansion of gases in the cylinder caused the blast. The two professors were supposed to ensure that such incidents do not happen. There was also evidence of breach of security protocol while handling the equipment,” the Sadashivnagar Police said.

Professors Jagadeesh and Reddy have been booked under 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC.

32-year-old research intern Manoj Kumar died in the gas explosion at the IISc laboratory on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the three other victims; Karthik Shenoy, Naresh Kumar and Athulya Uday Kumar, are in a critical condition and are undergoing treatment at MS Ramaiah Hospital. Officials with the hospital said that Naresh Kumar is on the ventilator. “He is stable right now but the next few days are crucial for his recovery. Another patient Athulya has facial injuries. He is stable right now and is also conscious. Karthik Shenoy is also on ventilator and his condition is critical,” hospital officials said.

According to the police, four interns, who were M.Tech students, were conducting an experiment in the lab when the incident occurred. The four men, interning with Superwave Technology Private Limited, were handling pressurised hydrogen, oxygen, helium and nitrogen gases.

The victim, Manoj Kumar, a native of Mysuru’s Kollegal area, was standing close to the hydrogen cylinder, which is said to have burst. He died immediately due to the impact. His co-workers – Karthik Shenoy, Naresh Kumar and Athulya Uday Kumar – were grievously injured and were rushed to MS Ramaiah Hospital.

IISc on Friday released ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to wife of Mr Manoj. A team from the institute headed by the Director – Prof Anurad Kumar visited the MS Ramaiah Hospital on Friday, where the injured vitims are undergoing treatment. The Director has assured the relatives of the injured that IISc would cover the medical expenses.

Mumbai court to pronounce verdict on December 21

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

special CBI court in Mumbai will give verdict in the case of alleged fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Kausar Bi and Tulsi Prajapati on December 21.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged gangster, and his wife Kauser Bi were killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2005 by the Gujarat Police. His aide, Prajapati, was killed in another alleged fake encounter in 2006 in a joint operation by the Gujarat and the Rajasthan police.

The cases were initially probed by CID, Gujarat, before they were transferred to the CBI in 2010. They were then transferred to Mumbai in 2012, on the request of the CBI to ensure a fair trial.

Judge SJ Sharma, in the hearing, said he’d try his best to finish the proceeding and pronounce the verdict by December 21.

“If I am not able to do it by then, I will pronounce the verdict on December 24,” he added.

The final arguments in the case started on Monday.

According to the CBI, two encounters were staged by a joint team of Rajasthan and Gujarat police, between 2005 and 2006, in which both the named gangsters were shot dead.

There are 22 accused policemen and others in the case who have been facing trial. Out of the 120 witnesses brought in by the prosecution, 92 have been declared hostile.

The accused, who did not get any witnesses, tried to demolish CBI’s theory while in the box.

Of the 38 people initially charged by the CBI for the alleged fake encounters, 16 people including BJP president Amit Shah (who was the minister of state for home in Gujarat at the time) and all senior police officials, were discharged by the court.

CBI counsel BP Raju pointed out that they started the probe in the case after five years while the examination of witnesses began 12 years after the crime was committed, leading to a few gaps in the investigation.

Raju said that some of their important witnesses had turned hostile during the trial, hampering their case.

The judge, at that point, said, “I don’t blame the CID. I don’t blame the CBI. There are statements and witnessess. If they come here and say something else, it’s not your fault. You did your job.”

All new vehicles to have high security registration plates from April 2019

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Come April 2019, all new vehicles will come pre-fitted with high security registration plates (HSRP), the government said on Thursday.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified amendments in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 to this effect.

The notification mandates that the high security registration plate including the third registration mark shall be supplied by the vehicle manufacturers along with the vehicles manufactured on or after April 1, 2019 to their dealers.

The dealers would place a mark of registration on such plates and affix them on the vehicle. The vehicle dealers can also provide the HSRP plates for old vehicles.

“This step is likely to improve the coverage of HSRP on vehicles, while ensuring its quality by the vehicle manufacturers. The HSRP helps in keeping track of the vehicle, and makes it easier to trace a lost or stolen vehicle,” the Road Transport Ministry said in a release.

The notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 to this effect was issued after “due consideration of objections and suggestions” received from the public in this regard, it said.

The government had in April this year invited objections and suggestions from those likely to be affected from the amendment.

India fold for 250 in first innings vs Australia

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

India failed to add any further run to their overnight score before being packed for 250 on the very first ball of the second morning of the opening Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval here on Friday.

Pacer Josh Hazlewood got the last man Mohammed Shami (6) caught behind on the very first ball to deny the visitors any addition to the overnight score.

For the hosts, Hazlewood shone with three wickets, while fellow quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins took two scalps each. The spinner Nathan Lyon also bagged a couple of wickets.

Earlier on Thursday, India were reduced to 19/3 before centurion Cheteshwar Pujara’s gritty 16th Test ton (123) anchored the innings to 250/9 at stumps.

Pujara, however, fell to a brilliant run out on the last ball of the opening day.

Brief Scores: India 250 (Cheteshwar Pujara 123, Rohit Sharma 37; Josh Hazlewood 3/52, Pat Cummins 2/49) vs Australia.

Gadkari collapses at function, says he’s now fine

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari, a diabetic, fainted during a function here on Friday due to “low sugar” and later, after taking rest, left for the Shirdi Sai Baba temple.

The incident occurred when he was standing with other dignitaries for the National Anthem at the convocation function of the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV) Agricultural University.

Gadkari started feeling uneasy, lost his balance and collapsed on the dais. Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao and some others rushed to prevent him from falling.

He was taken to a government guest house and examined by a team of medicos.

A diabetic patient, Gadkari’s condition was stated as “stable” by his Bharatiya Janata Party colleagues.

He himself tweeted later: “Had slight medical condition due to low sugar. I have been attended by doctors and I am doing well now. I thank all of you for all the well wishes.”

After a short rest at the guest house, Gadkari took a helicopter ride to Shirdi to pray at the Sai Baba temple and later took a private flight to his hometown Nagpur.

Party colleagues said his gruelling daily schedules may have taken a toll on his health which resulted in his collapse.

Gadkari is known to maintain a stringent 18-hour schedule starting at 6 a.m. with yoga and his working day continues well past midnight.

India’s growth was muted by lack of intent of earlier governments: Modi

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

India's growth was muted by lack of intent of earlier governments: Modi
Claiming that India has witnessed unprecedented growth and development under his tenure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday blamed the “lack of intent” of previous governments making the nation lag behind in all aspects until the BJP came to power in 2014.

“The fundamental question to be asked is why India, even 67 years of independence, continued to be underdeveloped?

“Eminent personalities ruled the country and went away but Indians yearned for even the basic of services. For over six decades, the issues faced by the masses were never resolved, why?

“Despite skilled human resources and abundant natural resources the country was far from developed. The reason was not lack of resources but lack of intent, lack of compassion, lack of work culture,” said Modi.

Modi was addressing the 75th anniversary of Hindi daily “Dainik Jagran” here, during which besides, crediting the media for playing a major role in nation building, the Prime Minister dedicated most of his over 30 minutes speech in emphasising how his government in merely four years has ushered in all-round progress and put India in world reckoning.

In an obvious reference to the Congress, which ruled the country for nearly six decades, Modi said the previous governments never intended to work for the masses for the sake of their “politics of vote-bank and appeasement”.

Enumerating his government’s various schemes and projects and informing how the country has seen “unprecedented progress” in all fields, Modi said: “If the previous governments had done all this work, then how would they have pursued the politics of vote-bank, their politics of appeasement”.

“Can you imagine that Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura were not on the railways map before we came to power.

“If the intention and the work culture that exists now, if it existed earlier, one can only imagine the progress the country could have made,” said Modi.

Modi praised the media’s role in turning his pet schemes ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ into national movements.

“To question the system is not only the media’s responsibility but also its right and I welcome it,” he said praising the media for its role in strengthening the process of nation building.

We’re not your ‘hired gun’ anymore, Imran Khan tells US

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

We're not your 'hired gun' anymore, Imran Khan tells US

Prime Minister Imran Khan has accused the US of “pushing Pakistan away” and said he would never want to have a relation with Washington where his country is treated like a “hired gun”.

“I would never want to have a relationship where Pakistan is treated like a hired gun — given money to fight someone else’s war,” Khan said in an interview with the Washington Post on Thursday, referring to the 1980s war against the Soviet Union and the ongoing war on terror.

“We should never put ourselves in this position again. It not only cost us human lives, devastation of our tribal areas, but it also cost us our dignity. We would like a proper relationship with the US,” he said.

Asked to elaborate on the ideal nature of relationship that he would like to have with the US, Khan said: “For instance, our relationship with China is not one-dimensional. It’s a trade relationship between two countries. We want a similar relationship with the US.”

He said Pakistan was not “hedging” towards China, rather it was Washington’s attitude which had brought a change in the bilateral relationship. “The US has basically pushed Pakistan away.”

Asked why he “harboured anti-US sentiments”, Khan said disagreeing with Washington’s policies did not make him “anti-American”.

“This is a very imperialistic approach. You are either with me or against me.”

Khan condemned the 2011 US operation in Abbottabad that killed Osama bin Laden, saying that it was “humiliating” that Washington did not trust Pakistan to kill the terrorist.

“It was humiliating that we were losing our soldiers and civilians and (suffering terrorist) bomb attacks because we were participating in the US war, and then our ally did not trust us to kill Bin Laden,” he said, adding that the US “should have tipped off Pakistan”.

“We did not know whether we were a friend or a foe.”

He also dismissed claims that there were safe havens for terrorists in Pakistan, saying that “there are no sanctuaries in Pakistan”.

Referring to US President Donald Trump’s South Asia policy, Khan said he was committed to having dialogue to achieve peace in war-torn Afghanistan.

“I talked for years about how there was no military solution in Afghanistan and they called me Taliban Khan. Now I’m happy that everyone realises there is only a political solution.”

Welcoming the US bid to engage in talks with the Afghan Taliban, he said that Islamabad did not want the US to leave Afghanistan in a hurry as they did in 1989.

“The last thing we want is to have chaos in Afghanistan. There should be a settlement this time.”

AIMIM confident of winning all contested seats: Owaisi

December 7, 2018 by Nasheman

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi Friday exuded confidence that his party would be successful in Telangana Assembly polls.

“I am hopeful. I am fully confident that we will be successful in every seat. I hope people of Hyderabad, people of Telangana take this little difficulty, go out of homes and use their vote,” he told reporters here.

The AIMIM has fielded candidates in eight assembly segments in Hyderabad out of the total 119 seats in the state.

It is supporting TRS in other segments.

Owaisi cast his vote in Rajendranagar Assembly segment in the city Friday.

The counting of votes would be taken up on December 11.

Assembly polls in Telangana were originally scheduled to be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls next year.

However, the Legislative Assembly was dissolved prematurely on September six following a recommendation made by the TRS government.

The ruling TRS is going alone in the polls and so does the BJP.

The Congress, TDP, CPI and Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) have formed the ‘People’s Front’ for the election.
