Rahul hopes RBI Governor will show Modi ‘his place’

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Rahul hopes RBI Governor will show Modi 'his place'

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked the Centre with destroying institutions and hoped Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel will show Prime Minister Narendra Modi “his place”. He charged Modi with attempting to “destroy the RBI” through his “puppets” and “cronies”.

“Modi and his coterie of cronies, continue to destroy every institution they can get their hands on. Today, through his puppets at the RBI Board Meet he will attempt to destroy the RBI. I hope Patel and his team have a spine and show him his place,” Gandhi tweeted.

The RBI board meeting on Monday comes amid growing tension between the Centre and the RBI after the Finance Ministry recently sought discussions under the never-used-before Section 7 of the RBI Act which empowers the government to issue directions to the central bank.

The board is expected to take up the liquidity crisis that initially triggered the tiff between the government and the RBI.

India revokes 25 NRI men’s passports over marital discord

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi The Indian government has revoked the passports of 25 men living abroad for abandoning their spouses in India, a Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) official said on Friday.

Of these, eight were recommended by the Ministry while the rest involved cases where the state police sought the action.

“We keep receiving such complaints where Non-Resident Indians have been held accountable for abandoning their wives. The action taken depends on priority,” the official said.

Apart from revoking of passport, in some cases the police also has the authority to issue Look-Out-Circulars (LoC).

In criminal matters involving NRIs, the LoC can be issued by the investigating agency in cognisable offences when the husband from overseas is deliberately evading arrest.

It could also be that he is not appearing in the trial court despite non-bailable warrants and other coercive measures or that there is likelihood that he will leave the country to evade trial or arrest.

An inter-ministerial body dealing with matrimonial disputes headed by WCD Secretary Rakesh Srivastava with members from Home Ministry and the External affairs takes the decision of issuing the LoC after the case is scrutinised by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Mary Kom in quarters, Sarita out of women’s boxing Worlds

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi Veteran boxer M.C. Mary Kom entered the quarter-finals while Sarita Devi lost her bout to crash out of the World Women’s Boxing Championship here on Sunday.

Mary registered a unanimous 5:0 win over Kazakhstan’s Aigerim Kassenayeva in the flyweight category (48kg). Sarita, on the other hand, lost by a 2:3 split decision to Ireland’s Kellie Anne Harrington in the lightweight 60kg category to bow out.

Apart from Mary, Manisha Moun, Lovlina Borgohain and Bhagyabati Kachari all marched into the quarterfinals on the fourth day of the championships.

In the first match, Mary started the first round on a positive note, landing a few punches and jabs without taking much risk.

The second round saw Mary displaying some attacking game. The veteran Indian boxer landed some powerful punches to take a much needed advantage.

In the third round, Aigerim tried to bounce back but it was too late as in the first two rounds she could not match the pace of the Indian boxer.

Mary will take on Wu Yu of China in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Talking after the bout, Mary said: “Feeling good, the pressure is off. I always enjoyed boxing, it has been my life whether I train or compete in tournaments,” said the mother of three children.

In the 69kg category, Sarita lost a close contest. Sarita showed some great moves. Towards the end Sarita pulled a lot of punches and also landed it on the mark but the umpires decision went in favour of her opponent.

“I thought I got unluckier. Some points did not go my way. But I will continue to box as long as I can,” said a dejected Sarita.

Among other players, Manisha outpunched her way to upstage reigning world champion Dina Zholaman from Kazakhstan with a unanimous 5:0 decision in the 54 kg pre-quarterfinals.

Equally impressive was Lovlina in her 69 kg pre-quarterfinal bout against Panama’s Atheyna Bylon, former world champion.

In the last bout of the afternoon, Baghyabati proved her prowess, beating Germany’s Irina-Nicoletta Schonberger in a split verdict (4:1) in the 81 kg category.

Pawan guides Bengaluru to victory vs Jaipur

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad Pawan Sehrawat produced a terrific raiding performance as he led Bengaluru Bulls to 45-32 win over Jaipur Pink Panthers in Inter Zone Challenge Week of Pro Kabaddi League here on Sunday.

Sehrawat scored 19 points and two super raids by Rohit Kumar and Kashiling Adake laid the foundations for Bengaluru’s victory.

Jaipur Pink Panthers fizzled after a strong start with Deepak Niwas Hooda getting a super 10.

The first half saw both teams match each other stride for stride. There was little to choose from as in the 5th minute Deepak Niwas Hooda got a raid point to level it at 4-4.

The next couple of minutes saw Jaipur Pink Panthers put the pressure on Bengaluru Bulls as they opened a six-point gap. An all out was inflicted by Jaipur in the 9th minute as they led 11-5.

Bengaluru Bulls were jolted out of their stupor after the all out. Kashiling Adake made a brilliant super raid in the 13th minute as he scored four points to reduce the gap to just three points.

Bengaluru Bulls took the lead in the 16th minute as they inflicted an all out.

At the end of the first half, Bengaluru Bulls trailed 18-17.

The second half saw Bengaluru Bulls switch gears. First Rohit Kumar produced a super raid in the 22nd minute.

Pawan Sehrawat’s two-point raid in the 24th minute led to another all out on Jaipur Pink Panthers.

Anup Kumar was having a quiet match as in the first 30 minutes he scored just one point for Jaipur Pink Panthers.

Jaipur tried to make a comeback in the match but Pawan Sehrawat was having none of it.

Sehrawat got a super 10 in the 31st minute and followed it up a couple of more successful raids.

Jaipur’s fate was sealed when they suffered another all out in the 34th minute to trail 24-37.

Deepak Niwas Hooda did his best to get points for Jaipur and achieved a super 10. But it was a little too late as Pawan Sehrawat continued to plunder points to lead Bengaluru Bulls to a win.

Sara is star on ‘Koffee With Karan’ By Subhash K. Jha

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Sara Ali Khan’s debut film “Kedarnath” is around the corner. But to me her debut on Karan Johar’s talkshow on Sunday night proved she’s already a star.

Poised, articulate, relaxed, witty. And very eager to embrace the camera — Ladies and Gentleman, a star is born.

Say “Hello to Sara Ali Khan” in the best episode of Karan’s show this season so far.

Father, Saif Ali Khan, and daughter looked more like co-stars on the couch that says a lot about how much younger the heroines are getting.

This could also be as Saif made a very bohemian dad on the show. He had quick answers to Karan’s unconventional queries about his unconventional relationship with his daughter.

And Sara was equally quick in giving it back to Saif as good as she got.

For once, Karan chose to tread on the sticky side of the road, asking Sara about her relationship with her father’s second wife Kareena Kapoor(we can’t call her stepmom, as Saif warned us that evening).

Sara didn’t mince words. She described her parents as “wild”. I would have to go with that. It takes a whole lot of wildness to get where Saif has in life.

To be actually sitting on that couch with his grownup daughter all set to make her debut as a leading lady, and who is just five to six years younger than his wife.

Full marks to Sara for calling a spade a spade. And wild, wild.

Oh yes, there was also a section about what Karan described as the “elephant in the room”. I found that to be a strange way to describe little cute Taimur whose pictures break the internet almost every day.

Interestingly, Karan had got video messages on Taimur from a bunch of prominent paparazzi photographers talking on Taimur.

Let’s face it. I would like to see Saif with Tamir on Karan’s couch soon. He is by far the most successful Khan in Saif’s family. Sara seemed refreshingly free of sibling jealousy. Not surprising, considering Taimur is young enough to be her child.

Karan called their family “modern”. I would not define this family as modern. Just happy to do their own thing unmindful of the repercussions.

To me the star of “Koffee With Karan” was Sara Ali Khan who seemed so comfortable with her dad, with her host and with the camera, not particularly in that order though.

But then orderliness is not a big virtue of this spontaneously bohemian family.

Kerala protests as 68 Sabarimala pilgrims arrested

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Sabarimala Over 60 pilgrims have been arrested from Sabarimala after they failed to comply to prohibitory orders in place at the temple leading to protests here and across Kerala, police said on Monday.

While angry Hindu acitivists took to streets, raised slogans and held prayer sessions in front of police stations across the state, Union Minister K.J. Alphons criticised the state government for the action.

As news spread about the arrests, in Thiruvanathapuram protesters assembled near Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence and shouted slogans.

The situation started growing tense late on Sunday, when despite prohibitory orders in and around the temple town, over 200 pilgrims did not vacate the premise and started singing Lord Ayyappa hymns .

They continued with the chants even after being requested, forcing the police to take action and forcefully evict them. As many as 68 devotees were also arrested.

They were taken to the Maniar Police Camp in Pathanamthitta district and were to be produced before a court later Monday.

Superintendent of Police Prathish Kumar told the media the arrests were made as protesters even after being informed to disperse once the temple closed at 10 p.m, did not move out.

Forces of the sangh parivar has announced to hold protests on Monday across the state. Security has been heightened for Vijayan, who has official engagements in Kozhikode.

Speaking to the media at Nilackal, Alphons on Monday said: “I fail to understand why the Kerala Police has clamped prohibitory orders.

“This is not the way things should be handled. Sabarimala pilgrims are not extremists. You cannot use force in this place.”

He also said that he would inspect how the state has utilised the Rs 100 crore-relef fund from the Centre. “I will go around the temple town to make sure how the funds have been used.”

The Sabarimala temple opened its doors at 5 p.m. on November 17 for two months.

The temple town has witnessed protests by Hindu groups since the September 28 when the Supreme Court allowed women of all ages to enter the temple that hitherto banned girls and women aged between 10 and 50.

The apex court on November 13 refused to stay that verdict.

While the Kerala government is trying hard to see that the apex court verdict is implemented, the BJP/RSS, sangh parivar forces and the Congress-led UDF are up in arms against violation of the temple tradition.

Karnataka farmers protest government apathy over support price for sugarcane

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Belagavi (Karnataka) Hundreds of farmers, including the womenfolk, on Sunday staged a protests here against the state government’s alleged indifference over ensuring minimum support price for sugarcane and in getting their arrears released from the mill owners.

“In view of the production glut and falling price, the state government should ensure a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 3,000 per tonne for sugarcane with 9.5 per cent recovery and help us get arrears for the cane supplied to mill owners last year,” farmer leader Siddanna Gouda told reporters here, about 500km northwest of the state.

The previous Congress government had fixed Rs 2,500 per tonne as MSP last year.

With input costs, including harvesting and transporting the cane to the mills going up steeply, Gouda said growing sugarcane was no longer remunerative, as mill owners were unwilling to pay more and settle the arrears.

“We suspended on Saturday our agitation launched on November 15 for higher MSP and recovery of arrears on the assurance of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy that he would meet us here on Monday. But he has now backed out,” alleged Gouda.

As a mark of protest against Kumarswamy cancelling his visit to the city on Monday, about 20 farmers drove trucks laden with sugarcane into the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, which is the state legislative and secretariat building for the region.

“We will disrupt the winter session of the state legislature here next month if the state government does not resolve our issues by November 30, as we cannot keep the cane in the fields longer from harvesting as recovery will be less if delayed,” added Gouda.

The opposition BJP condemned the JD-S-Congress coalition government’s indifference to the plight of the sugarcane farmers in the state.

“The coalition government’s approach to farmers’ plight is reprehensible. Scores of farmers, including their womenfolk, were arrested at Belagavi for staging a protest,” said Karnataka BJP President B.S. Yeddyurappa in Bengaluru.

Mocking at Kumaraswamy and the JD-S for claiming to be a party for farmers, by farmers and of farmers, Yeddyurappa said the former told a woman agitator that he was not responsible for what happened to them over the last four years as he became chief minister only 5 months ago.

Kumaraswami has also cast aspersions on the integrity of the farmers, which is unacceptable.

“By calling farmers ‘goondas’ (goons), Kumaraswamy has indulged in an outrageous act. This shows the contempt his party has for farmers,” added Yeddyurappa.

Delhi’s air quality worsens again, no imminent improvement seen

November 19, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi Air quality in Delhi and the adjoining areas worsened to the ‘very poor’ category on Sunday, after a 3-day respite, and pollution is expected to increase over the next few days due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Official report claims “significant drop” in stubble burning in neighbouring states. Delhi is currently suffering with the pollution generated from the local sources.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi on Sunday was 311, considered ‘very poor’, while on Saturday it was 267 or ‘poor’, on a scale of 0 to 500.

The major pollutant PM2.5 or particles with diameter less than 2.5mm also intensified over the day as the Westerly winds brought along moisture.

“Air quality is ‘very poor’ and expected to remain in the same category, with a gradual increase for the next three days as surface winds will be declining slowly,” said a forecast by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

SAFAR said that high humidity is unfavourable for dispersion of the pollutant.

“Delhi currenlty is polluted with its own pollutants. Stubble burning has negligible effect on it,” said Mahesh Palawat, a director at private weather forecasting agency Skymet.

With wind speeds set to fall till November 20, the pollution may rise.

“However, air quality will improve with Delhi receiving fresh north-westerly winds from November 21,” Palawat added.

The average presence of the major pollutant PM2.5 was 163 microgrammes per cubic meter in Delhi. Across over 40 regions in the National Capital Region (NCR) it was 160.

Across NCR, Gurugram with an AQI of 255 or ‘poor’ had the cleanest air. The AQI was 335 in Ghaziabad, 313 in Greater Noida, 336 in Noida and 308 in Faridabad.

SAFAR has issued an advisory cautioning people in Delhi to avoid outdoor physical exercises.
