Break silence over Akbar, Congress tells Modi

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Sunday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence over his ministerial colleague M.J. Akbar, who is facing allegations of sexual harassment.

“It is a question of women’s dignity, security and safety. It was expected that the Minister concerned would give an immediate explanation,” Congress leader Anand Sharma said.

“But it was equally the duty of the Prime Minister, Constitutional duty and moral duty, to speak. Why the Prime Minister has chosen to be silent is the fundamental question. Tell the country what your views are,” Sharma told reporters here.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar earlier on Sunday returned from an official tour abroad and said he would issue a statement over the allegations.

Many female journalists have accused Akbar of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour at various stages of his journalistic career.

“The accused forcibly took the victim to a flat in same locality and gangraped her,” the official from Kalyanpuri police station said.

Kangaroo attack in Australia nearly turns deadly

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Australian couple are lucky to be alive after they were attacked by a vicious kangaroo in northeastern Queensland state.

Jim and Linda Smith were feeding wild kangaroos on their property in the Darling Downs when a grey kangaroo buck struck out at Jim, knocking him to the ground.

The kangaroo attacked his wife when she ran to help him, leaving her with a collapsed lung, broken ribs, cuts and scratches.

“It’s scary, it knocked me over once or twice and once they grab you, you can see what they do,” said Jim Smith, showing his injuries.

It was only when their son came out and hit the kangaroo with a piece of wood that the marsupial stopped the attack and returned to nearby bushland, Australian media reported.

Linda Smith was taken to Toowoomba Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

“If the kangaroo was able to continue to inflict further injury, her life was, yes, in danger,” Queensland Ambulance Service’s senior operations supervisor Stephen Johns said.

Australia has roughly 45 million kangaroos and it is not unusual for them to come into conflict with people as housing has expanded to areas where the marsupials live.

They are even more likely to be driven into populated areas in search of food and water in drought-stricken areas.

Mumbai police arrested Four persons for assaulting TV journalist in Mumbai

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a television journalist near his house in south Mumbai, police said Monday.

The accused, all city residents aged between 20 and 25 years, were nabbed late Sunday night from Tardeo area, a senior police official said.

Herman Gomes, working with a private TV channel, was returning home along with a friend in a taxi on Sunday when he saw four to six men waiting near his house in Gamdevi area.

The men started abusing Gomes and later allegedly assaulted him and also hit his friend, as per the victim. Gomes was injured in the attack and later received six stitches near his eyes.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone-II) Dnyaneshwar Chavan, said prima facie it appears the incident might have taken place in the heat of the moment following some argument. “However, we are trying to go into the depth of the matter,” he said, adding, the accused do not have any criminal background.

Based on Gomes’ complaint, the Gamdevi Police had registered a case under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 324 (voluntary causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and other relevant provisions. Journalists’ associations in the city had Sunday condemned the attack and alleged that police did not file the victim’s complaint promptly.

The Mumbai Press Club termed the attack on Gomes a “dastardly act”. An association of crime reporters in the city have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take action against police officers who allegedly delayed registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in the matter.

Minister of State for Home (urban), Ranjit Patil had later said an investigation was on into the incident and “correct steps will be taken in the direction”.

Netanyahu threatens Hamas with ‘very strong blows’

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday threatened to inflict “very strong blows” on Hamas after fresh violence along the fence that separates the besieged Gaza Strip from Israel.

Israeli forces killed seven protesters along the fence on Friday during the ongoing weekly Great March of Return protests, which began in March.

Though largely peaceful, some protesters have employed tactics such as flying incendiary balloons and kites that float over Israel’s separation fence and set fire to agricultural land on the Israeli side.

“We are very close to another type of action which would include very strong blows. If Hamas is intelligent, it will cease fire and violence now,” Netanyahu said during a weekly cabinet meeting.

Israel announced it would suspend all fuel deliveries to the Gaza Strip, after fresh protests along the fence that saw seven Palestinians killed by Israeli troops.

Gaza, which already suffers from chronic power outages, relies on fuel shipments from Israel to power its electricity-generating plant. Just last week, a deal had been reached with Israel for the passage of Qatari-funded fuel to Gaza to increase electricity supplies.

The majority of people in Gaza are originally from parts of present-day Israel.
A UN-brokered deal had seen Qatar pledge to pay $60m for fuel to be brought into Gaza over six months.

On Saturday, Israel’s Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman said fuel deliveries would only resume if there was a “total cessation of violence, the launching of incendiary balloons (from Gaza towards Israel) and the use of burning tyres against Israeli towns” near the enclave.

For their part, Palestinian protesters have faced Israeli tear gas and sniper fire during the mass protests.

At least 205 Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed since protests began on March 30.

The protesters are demanding to be allowed to return to their villages and homes from which their families were removed to make way for present-day Israel.

BJP Win In Assembly Polls Must Turn Into “Tsunami” In 2019″ says Amit Shah

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

BJP chief Amit Shah on Sunday encouraged party workers in Madhya Pradesh to strive to win over 200 seats in next month’s state Assembly polls. The polling for the 230-member Assembly in the BJP-ruled state will be held on November 28.

Speaking at a party workers’ convention at Hoshangabad, Mr Shah said, “The party can form the government with less than 200 seats, but we need to cross the 200-mark because our workers in West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are looking towards Madhya Pradesh.”

BJP currently has 166 lawmakers in Madhya Pradesh. Mr Shah said the victories in the upcoming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh should be so massive that they create a storm, which would turn into a “tsunami” in 2019.

“This tsunami would cover the entire country, including West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala,” he added.

“The party has witnessed success due to the sacrifices of several workers and leaders in the last 50 years. We are lucky, but we also have a responsibility. After we win the 2018 Assembly elections and the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, we will have the responsibility of ensuring victory for the party from panchayat to Parliament for the next 50 years,” Mr Shah said.

Recalling 1982, when he was a booth in-charge, Mr Shah said BJP was the only party where an ordinary worker could rise to the president’s post. “It is possible only in the BJP that a tea-seller’s son can bring glory to the country by becoming prime minister,” he said, referring to Narendra Modi.

Kerala HC grants bail to rape accused Bishop Mulakkal

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The Kerala High Court on Monday granted bail to Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who was arrested in September on charges of raping a nun repeatedly between 2014 and 2016.

The bishop secured the bail with strict conditions that he should not enter Kerala. He must also surrender his passport and should appear before the police once in every two weeks.

Mulakkal was arrested on September 21 after three days of questioning. On September 24, he was sent to two weeks judicial custody.

Mulakkal has been languishing in the Pala sub-jail since.

Earlier on October 3, the high court had denied the bishop bail as Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan observed that there was evidence against him.

Mulakkal, who heads the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar in Punjab, is the first bishop in the country to be jailed for rape.

Did not issue 5-day strike call in Nov: AIBEA

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) has denied issuing any circular calling for five days of bank strike in November-end demanding wage hike, said a top official on Monday.

He also said the bank unions have rejected the Indian Banks’ Association’s (IBA) proposal to link bankers’ wages to operating profits and return on assets (ROA) as only about six banks would be able to give higher wages over and above the six per cent salary hike now being offered.

“We have not issued any circular or notice informing of five days strike call given by United Forum for Bank Unions (UFBU),” C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary told IANS.

“Some malicious elements have cut-pasted the union’s letter head and my signature on a plain paper and added some malicious message in the middle,” he said.

On Sunday a message was circulated in social media under AIBEA letterhead that the UFBU has decided to call for five days continuous strike from November 26 to 30.

Queried about the umbrella body of nine bank unions UFBU’s decision on IBA’s proposal of six per cent wage hike and further increases to be worked out based on the operating profits and ROA of individual banks, he said the unions are not agreeable.

He said at the recent meeting of UFBU the IBA’s proposal was discussed and was not agreed to.

“As per IBA’s proposal only employees of about six banks may get wage hike over and above the six per cent offered, which is not agreeable. Salary hike is linked to inflation and cost of living and not to the performance of the banks,” Venkatachalam said.

Air India crew member falls off aircraft in Mumbai

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

A senior woman crew member fell off an Air India plane at the airport here as it was preparing for a flight to New Delhi, official sources said on Monday.

The incident occurred at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) when the Mumbai-Delhi flight AI-864 was preparing for departure shortly before 7 a.m.

Some ground crew members immediately rushed Lobo to the Nanavati Hospital.

The national carrier later said that she had suffered injuries to her legs and termed the incident as “unfortunate”.
