In a major reshuffle, the state government on Saturday transferred 20 IPS officers, including top-ranking officers in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the Karnataka Lokayukta and State Intelligence Department.

Notably the transfer orders came a day after chief minister Kumaraswamy alleged that “certain kingpins’ were trying to bribe Congress and JD(S) MLAs to pull down his ministry, and were mobilising funds from people involved in illegal activities towards this end.

The new postings are: Alok Mohan (ADGP, railways, Bengaluru), P S Sandhu (commissioner for traffic and road safety, Bengaluru), P Ravindranath (ADGP, forest cell, Bengaluru), Sanjay Sahay (ADGP, police computer wing, Bengaluru), Alikana S Murthy (ADGP, Karnataka Lokayukta, Bengaluru), Alok Kumar (additional commissioner of police, crime, Bengaluru), N Satheesh Kumar (DIG, KSRP, Bengaluru), Sandeep Patil (Jt commissioner, CAR, Bengaluru), PS Harsha (DIG, prisons, Bengaluru), KT Balakrishna (SP, intelligence, Bengaluru), P Rajendra Prasad (SP, wireless, Bengaluru), Ram Niwas Sepat (SP, ACB, Bengaluru), Ida Martin Marbaniang (DCP, traffic west, Bengaluru), Bheemashankar S Guled (SP, railways, Bengaluru), G Radhika (AIGP, DGP office, Bengaluru), Hanumantharaya (SP, Yadgir), S Girish (DCP crime, Bengaluru), AN Prakash Gowda (SP, Hassan), KV Jagadish (DCP, traffic east, Bengaluru) and N Chaitra (SP, directorate of civil rights enforcement, Bengaluru).

Gang from New Delhi looting houses in Bengaluru arrested

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

A 26-year-old man and his gang who used to come to Bengaluru from New Delhi to burgle houses were arrested here on Sunday.

From the CCTV footage from a burglary that took place two months ago, two suspects- Ashish and Harman were identified by the Jeevan Bhema Nagar police. Ashish was caught by a night watchman and confessed to the crime. This led to the arrest of Harman, a resident of New Delhi, who used to fly from there to Chennai and then would come to Bengaluru by car. He would travel back to his place by train or flight after the burglary. Police also confiscated 1.5 kg of gold and 2 kg of silver articles worth at least Rs 50 lakhs from them.

Harman also confessed to the police, saying that he would come to Bengaluru months in advance to plan their heist and that he would pose as a student and knock on doors of houses they used to burgle. He also confessed that he used to use several SIM cards to throw off the police and that their goods would be sold off at Chor Bazaars in the capital.

In a similar case in 2014, they were arrested but then were out on bail and they continued to burgle houses. Police say at least 20 cases involving this gang has been solved by the arrest and information provided by the gang.

KaRaVe activists blacken Hindi signboards

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

There has been a lot of agitation from the southern states of India over the past few years against the alleged imposition of the Hindi language, considered to be a largely northern language.

As a sign of protest, members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KaRaVe), on Friday, September 14, blackened the Hindi signboards along various national highways in the state on Friday, September 14. The Centre celebrated Hindi Diwas (Hindi day) on September 14, to mark the day on which Hindi became an official language of the Union Government under Article 343 of the Constitution back in 1949.

KaRaVe President T A Narayana Gowda claimed that the Centre was propagating its hidden agenda of imposing Hindi on the population, a large majority of whom are non-Hindi speaking and that this was their way of resisting this policy.

Milestones on NH 48 near Davangere and signs along on the various highways in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kolar, Shivamogga and some other districts were blackened by the KaRaVe activists.

A similar form of protest was carried out by the KaRaVe back in 2017 when they barged into the metro stations in Bengaluru and blackened the Hindi signboards while shouting slogans against the imposition of the Hindi language.

KaRaVe activists, in a bid to seek equality among all the languages in the country, are trying to get other non-Hindi speaking states to join in their efforts to oppose the BJP-ruled Centre’s imposition of the Hindi language on them.

Narayana said that it is disrespectful to other languages and unacceptable to make Hindi the official language of the union government, as India is a multilingual country. He also condemned the fact that the Centre wants to celebrate only Hindi Diwas.

After Kerala, rivers in DK show signs of drying

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

After our neighbouring state Kerala witnessed unexplainable instances of rivers getting dry, it is now the turn of undivided Dakshina Kannada district, wherein the flow of water in most of the rivers is said to be decreasing when compared to last year.

Due to this, social activists, environmentalists and civilians are worried about the situation of drinking water during summer.

Everyone seemed relaxed because it was earlier said that the district would not face any drinking water issues this year because the region received favourable rainfall.

Usually, rain starts lashing in the month of June here. However, the district has got rainfall continuously since mid-April this year. Despite the good rainfall, the water level dipping day by day is creating a sense of panic. Environmentalists opine that the existing water level is equal to the water level, which usually prevails in the month of January, which means our water bodies are showing a deficit of three months.

The report of groundwater authority in Dakshina Kannada district confirmed that the water level has gone down this year when compared to last year. The department has already analysed the existing water level in most of the rivers in Dakshina Kannada district. Sullia taluk, which is also called the green belt of Dakshina Kannada district too is likely to be hit this year, according to the report that says that water level of Payaswini river in Sullia has dipped around 2.45 meter after the Jodupala landslide and deluge episode.

In Uppinangadi also, sand beds are seen in the river even before the end of the monsoon. The water level in Kumaradhara and Nethravathi too is not satisfactory.

Lokesh, a farmer of Uppinagady, who uses Nethravathi river for irrigation purpose says that his arecanut plantation would definitely go dry this year due to lack of water in the river. “I wonder how the flow of the water lessened even after a good rainfall this year,” he adds.

Give a five-year break to the Western Ghats

Social activist M G Hegde says that the unscientific development works taken up by the government as well as private individuals has resulted in dire consequences like the flood, drought, landslide among others.

” Give a break of at least five years to the Western Ghats. Let her rejuvenate,” he says adding that the government should not go ahead with any projects which destroys the Western Ghats including the Yettina Hole project. As the western ghats are considered as the heart of Karnataka, it should not be touched. If we continue to wound our heart, we are threatening ourselves, he says.

Meanwhile, many have urged the government to take steps to analyse the reason behind this phenomenon and do what is necessary to avert eventualities.

Woman constable hires men to chop lover’s hand for refusing marriage

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

There seems to be no shortage of bizarre incidents as seen in a recent incident, a woman constable was apprehended for hiring known criminals to chop off her lover’s arm.

The Bengaluru police were sent on a wild goose chase recently by one of their own, when a man, identified as 27-year-old Raveesh, was attacked by three unidentified men at around 6 pm on September 11. The men chopped off his forearm and made away with it and not knowing the identities of the attackers and without an apparent motive, the police were left baffled by the circumstances Now, however, they have sufficient reason to believe that Raveesh’s lover was the “mastermind” behind his attack.

The attack happened in the forest area off Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Bannerghatta near Anekal when Raveesh, an electrical contractor, was with his lover Jayalakshmi, a woman constable with the VV Puram Traffic Police Station, according to police. There were even videos shot by passers-by after the attack, which showed Jayalakshmi screaming for someone to help Raveesh, which is why the police did not suspect her initially.

They first assumed that Raveesh’s business dealings or his relationship with Jayalakshmi was the reason behind the attack. However, inconsistencies in statements made by Jayalakshmi soon led the sleuths’ to suspect her. When going through her phone call records for further insight into the matter, they found that she was in contact with a known criminal identified as Shravanakumar alias Mental Vijji.

This gave the police another angle to the case and further investigations revealed that Jayalakshmi, who was married to another man, and Raveesh were in a relationship some years ago. They could not get married to each other as they belonged to different castes. However, when Raveesh found out that Jayalakshmi was considering divorcing her husband, he began to pursue her again.

Things went awry, however, when Jayalakshmi wanted to marry Raveesh, but he did not want to, which is what led to her plotting his attack, according to police. It was also learnt that Jayalakshmi had paid Rs 15,000 as an advance, out of the Rs 1.5 lakh that she was supposed to pay the attackers.

Jayalakshmi hired Kumar, a repeat offender, who along with his son Anand, hired Mental Vijji to aid with the assault. According to police, Jayalakshmi believed that Raveesh would have no other choice but to marry her if he lost his arm.

Police arrested Mental Vijji on Saturday morning and recovered Raveesh’s severed arm after taking the accused to the scene of the crime. Vijji was shot in the foot when he tried to escape by strangling a constable named Siddalingaswamy. The police have also arrested the others involved in the case.

Raveesh is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at a private hospital.

Trump’s SC pick’s sexual assault accuser comes forward

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

A woman accusing Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct more than 30 years ago has come forward publicly, detailing her allegations about President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.

In an exclusive Washington Post interview on Sunday, Christine Blasey Ford said that one summer in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh and a friend – both “stumbling drunk” corralled her into a bedroom during a gathering of teenagers at a house in Montgomery County.

While his friend watched, she said, Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her over her clothes. When she tried to scream, she said, he put his hand over her mouth.

“I thought he might inadvertently kill me,” said Ford, now a 51-year-old research psychologist in northern California. “He was trying to attack me and remove my clothing.”

Ford said she was able to escape when Kavanaugh’s friend and classmate at Georgetown Preparatory School, Mark Judge, jumped on top of them. She said she ran from the room, briefly locked herself in a bathroom and then fled the house.

“Now I feel like my civic responsibility is outweighing my anguish and terror about retaliation,” Ford told The Post.

Ford said she told no one of the incident in any detail until 2012, when she was in couples therapy with her husband.

The therapist’s notes, portions of which were provided by Ford and reviewed by The Washington Post, do not mention Kavanaugh’s name but say she reported that she was attacked by students “from an elitist boys’ school” who went on to become “highly respected and high-ranking members of society in Washington”.

On Sunday, the White House sent The Post a statement Kavanaugh issued last week, when the outlines of Ford’s account became public.

“I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation. I did not do this back in high school or at any time,” he said in the statement.

Ford in a letter in July described the incident and said she expected her story to be kept confidential.

33 Philippine miners dead in typhoon-triggered landslides

September 17, 2018 by Nasheman

At least 33 miners were confirmed dead and 29 others missing in the mining town of Itogon in the northern Philippine Benguet province due to typhoon-triggered landslides, authorities said on Sunday.

Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan said in local radio interviews that landslides had blocked roads, making relief rescue efforts difficult, Xinhua reported.

In Ucab village of Itogon, he said, two bunkhouses with an estimated 100 people living inside were buried by mud and rubble triggered by Typhoon Mangkhut on Saturday.

“I can’t begin to accept this, but it looks like the casualties here are going to go up to at least 100,” Palangdan said.

Most of Itogon residents work as miners in small scale mining industry while the rest are in farming. Most mine workers built boot camps around the mining area with their families.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines have sent troops to the disaster area to help in the rescue and retrieval efforts. But rescuers said the buried bunkhouses were built at a steep angle, making it difficult to implement rescue.

Meanwhile, the regional police of Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) said at least 49 people have so far died in the region that bore the brunt of the typhoon. Fourteen others are missing, the police said. Thirty-two people were also injured, the police added.

The Cordillera Administrative Region, which consists seven provinces, is the only land-locked region of the Philippines. The regional centre is Baguio City, officially known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines.
