Friendly match between Japan, Chile suspended after powerful earthquake

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The Japan Football Association decided on Thursday to suspend a friendly match between the national teams of Japan and Chile on the island of Hokkaido after a powerful earthquake struck the region.

Earlier in the day, Chile’s team was caught off guard by a 6.7-magnitude tremor that struck Japan’s Hokkaido island, where they were scheduled to play a friendly match at the Sapporo Dame stadium on Friday, reports Efe news agency.

“This decision was made upon careful evaluation of the magnitude of damage incurred, including damage to critical infrastructure such as power outages and significant transportation disruptions, as well as to ensure the security of all spectators,” the JFA said in a statement.

“We send our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathies to those affected by the earthquake that struck the central-eastern part of Iburi region in Hokkaido,” the JFA added.

Chile’s coach Reinaldo Rueda tweeted that all the team members were safe while a JFA spokesperson confirmed to Efe that the team is still in Hokkaido but will depart for South Korea — where they will play a friendly on September 11 — as soon as preparations are complete.

IT raids house of Sushil Modi’s sister in Srijan scam

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The Income Tax Department on Thursday raided the residence of senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi’s sister, Rekha Modi, who is one of the accused in Rs 1,900 crore Srijan scam, police said.

“A team of the IT Department raided Rekha Modi’s residence — a flat in Saraswati Apartment at posh commercial S.P. Verma road here. The team conducted searches in connection with the Srijan scam,” a district police official said.

According to the police officials, Rekha Modi is accused of purchasing huge jewellery gifts from the kingpin of multi-crore Srijan scam that is being probed by the CBI.

After Rekha Modi’s name surfaced in Srijan scam, opposition RJD attacked Sushil Modi, saying his family had links with those accused in the scam.

Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Yadav has repeatedly alleged that Sushil Modi’s family has direct links with the accused in the multi-crore Srijan scam case involving an NGO that allegedly pilfered funds meant for government welfare schemes.

“Sushil Modi’s sister Rekha Modi and niece Urvashi Modi received crores of rupees from Srijan scam,” the former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister had said earlier this year in a series of tweets, attaching the statement of Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd’s Indian Bank’s Bhagalpur branch account in which few transactions showed the names of Rekha Modi and Urvashi Modi.

However, Sushil Modi had claimed that he had no relation with Rekha Modi.

The Srijan scam involves Bhagalpur-based NGO Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd, which used to provide vocational training to women. The NGO allegedly pilfered funds meant for government welfare schemes from the bank accounts of the Bhagalpur district administration.

Nitish Kumar had on August 18, 2017 recommended a CBI probe into the scam after RJD chief Lalu Prasad accused him of “murdering democracy” in Bihar.

In August last year, the CBI registered 10 cases related to the scam and filed four fresh cases in June this year.

US sanctions 4 individuals, 5 entities for alleged support for Syria

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The US State Department has imposed financial sanctions on four individuals and five entities, accusing them of having facilitated weapons or fuel transfers, or provided other financial or material support, to the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the State Department, the sanctioned individuals were Syrian and Lebanese nationals, and the targeted entities included companies based in Syria, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, Xinhua reported.

“Today’s action shows that the US will continue to take concrete and forceful action to cut off material support to the Assad regime and its supporters. The US will continue to use all available mechanisms to isolate the Assad regime,” read the statement.

In a separate statement, the US Department of the Treasury said the targeted were involved in transactions with the Assad government and with the IS, noting the fact that the Idlib province has been encircled by the government forces.

All of the sanctioned individuals’ and entities’ assets within the US jurisdiction would be blocked, and US individuals and entities would be generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.

Since earlier this year, the Syrian rebels were driven out of key areas in the capital Damascus, the central province of Homs and the southern region. The government’s army has been amassing forces and military gear around Idlib in recent weeks, as a major battle against the rebels in Syria looms.

34 arrested in Philippines for sitting through national anthem

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Police in the Philippines have arrested 34 people for not standing while the national anthem was being played at a movie theatre, an official report said on Friday.

The report said the incident took place on Thursday in the theatre inside a mall in Lemery, a town in Batangas province, reports Xinhua news agency.

The national anthem called “Lupang Hinirang” is played in every theatre across the Philippines before the screening of a movie.

The police said the 34 people violated RA 8491 also known as the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”.

“As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor,” the Act says.

According to the law, any person or judicial entity which violates any of the provisions, upon conviction, be punished by a fine of not less than 5,000 pesos ($93) but not more than 20,000 pesos ($371), or by imprisonment for not more than one year, or both.

Twitter permanently bans US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Twitter said it has permanently banned US conspiracy theorist Alexander Jones and accounts associated with his website Infowars for “abusive behaviour”.

“Today, we permanently suspended @realalexjones and @infowars from Twitter and Periscope,” Twitter said on Thursday on its Safety account, Xinhua news agency reported.

The world leading social media site said it took the action “based on new reports of Tweets and videos posted yesterday that violate our abusive behaviour policy, in addition to the accounts’ past violations.”

The ban will cut Jones and Infowars from its 1.5 million followers on future interaction on Twitter’s platform, and Twitter vows to “take action” if the latter attempts to circumvent the prohibitive measure.

“We will continue to evaluate reports we receive regarding other accounts potentially associated with @realalexjones or @infowars and will take action if content that violates our rules is reported or if other accounts are utilized in an attempt to circumvent their ban,” @TwitterSafety said in one of its tweets.

The social media firm said it will increase transparency in implementation of its rules and actions, but it declines to “comment on enforcement actions we take against individual accounts, for their privacy.”

Twitter is one of the latest major tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Apple that has permanently banned Jones and his associated accounts. It imposed a week-long ban on Jones as a warning for his bellicose behaviour last month.

In August, Google-owned YouTube, Apple and Facebook removed or restricted Jones’ activities on their platforms for hate speech.

Jones is a controversial American radio show host and conspiracy theorist, who runs the website Infowars.com that is devoted to conspiracy theories and fake news.

He is notorious for accusing the US government of planning the Oklahoma City bombing that killed at least 168 people and wounded more than 680 others in 1995.

Jones also doubted the government’s role in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the US that left 2,996 people dead and over 6,000 injured.

British Airways probes massive customer data theft

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

British Airways announced that it was probing a massive theft of customer data from its website and mobile app.

The airline said the breach took place between 10.58 p.m. on August 21 and 9.45 p.m. on September 5, reported.

“The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally,” it said in a statement on Thursday night.

“We have notified the police and relevant authorities. We are deeply sorry for the disruption that this criminal activity has caused. We take the protection of our customers’ data very seriously.”

British Airways said personal and financial details of customers making bookings had been compromised.

About 380,000 transactions were affected, but the stolen data did not include travel or passport details.

All affected customers had been contacted on Thursday night.

Alex Cruz, British Airways’ Chairman and Chief Executive, said: “We are deeply sorry for the disruption that this criminal activity has caused. We take the protection of our customers’ data very seriously.”

This is not the first customer relations problem to affect the airline in recent times, the BBC said.

In July, the airline apologised after IT issues caused dozens of flights in and out of London’s Heathrow Airport to be cancelled.

In June, more than 2,000 British Airways passengers had their tickets cancelled because the prices were too cheap.

In May 2017, serious problems with British Airways’ IT systems led to thousands of passengers having their plans disrupted, after all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick were cancelled.

Brazilian presidential candidate stabbed at rally

September 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Brazil’s front-running far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed during a rally while campaigning for next month’s election.

On Thursday, Bolsonaro, notorious for making racist, sexist and homophobic remarks, was being led through a crowd on the shoulders of supporters in Juiz de Fora city in the southern state of Minhas Gervais when an assailant stabbed him from the front and he appeared to scream in pain, reports CNN.

Known to many of his countrymen as the “Brazilian Trump”, Bolsonaro was taken to a hospital where medical officials and his family said he was in a stable condition.

“Unfortunately it was more serious than we hoped,” tweeted his son Flavio Bolsonaro.

“The wound reached part of his liver, lung and intestine. He lost a lot of blood, reaching the hospital… Almost dead… His condition now seems stable. Please pray!”

Brazil’s federal police said that they arrested a man identified as Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, whom a group of people tried to lynch after accusing him of staging the attack, reports Efe news.

Bolsonaro is one of the most controversial candidates in the current electoral round because he is a defender of Brazil’s 1964-1984 military dictatorship.

He is also facing court proceedings for inciting violence.

According to a voter survey released on Wednesday, the rightist would finish first in the October 7 election if imprisoned former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, whose candidacy was declared invalid by election authorities does not participate, but he would lose in a runoff.

Lula was heading all the voter surveys with some 40 per cent support but recently he was declared “ineligible” to run because of his conviction on corruption charges.
