Man brutally murdered over wife’s ‘illicit’ affair

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

A man was brutally murdered by his neighbour in the town’s Sector 83 after he objected to his relation with his wife, police said on Monday.

Vikram Yadav was attacked with a steel rod multiple times by his neighbour Ramesh Yadav alias Tinu near a roundabout in Sector 83, police said, adding
Tinu (30) is married with two children.

Police said the victim was a driver with a senior doctor attached to Haryana Animal Husbandry Department in Gurugram.

Complainant Ramesh Kumar, elder brother of the victim, told the police that Vikram, his wife Geeta and two children lived in a two-storeyed house in Sikanderpur (Sector 85).

According to the FIR, Vikram married Geeta in 2007. Ramesh Kumar alleged in his complaint that the accused and Geeta had an illicit relation.

Kumar said that he and his brother had objected to the relationship several times and tried to settle the issue, but failed.

“Tinu called my brother near a chowk in Sector 83 on Sunday evening and smashed his head multiple times in the middle of the road,” Kumar said in his complaint.

The victim was first rushed to a private hospital in Gurugram and later he was referred to AIIMS in Delhi where he succumbed.

Tinu is absconding, police said, adding his wife is a teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya and is posted outside Haryana.

“The victim’s body was handed over to the family late on Monday evening after a post-mortem examination,” Investigating Officer Sandeep Kumar said.

We went wrong: Aamir Khan on ‘Thugs…’ failure

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Actor Aamir Khan has taken full responsibility for the debacle of ‘Thugs Of Hindustan’, and has apologised to the audience for not being able to entertain them even though the team tried hard to give the high budget film its best shot.

Aamir interacted with the media at the second edition of Cinestaan India’s Storyteller Script Contest 2018 along with writers Juhi Chaturvedi and Anjum Rajabali here.

Acknowledging the failure of ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’, in which he united with megastar Amitabh Bachchan for the first time, Aamir said: “I think we went wrong and I would like to take full responsibility for that. We tried very hard to make a good film and we didn’t hold back from putting in our entire effort, but somewhere or the other we went wrong.

“There are people who have liked the film and we are thankful to them, but they are in a minority. Most people didn’t like our film — we are aware of that.”

Over the years, Aamir Khan has had a loyal audience which he has earned through films like ‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘Ghajini’, ‘3 Idiots;, and ‘PK’.

“I want to apologise to my audience also as this time I wasn’t able to entertain them. I know people came in theatres with a lot of expectations but they didn’t enjoy the film.

“Audience is free to say what they feel about the film. What I can say is that we certainly tried our level best and I am feeling really bad that we didn’t succeed in entertaining the audience. So, next time we will try harder.”

Produced by Aditya Chopra under his banner Yash Raj Films and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film was one of the most anticipated Bollywood movie this year. It was widely panned by the audience and critics.

Asked if he had an intuition about the film’s failure before it released, Aamir said: “I don’t feel comfortable to talk about all these things publicly because when I am doing a film, I feel really close to it. It is like our own child, so if the film hasn’t succeeded to leave its mark, then also it will remain like my child.”

Aamir’s other two releases ‘Dangal’ and ‘Secret Superstar’ did phenomenal business in China.

What are his expectations from “Thugs…” in the country?

“The China release will be happening next month, so let’s see what happens,” he said.

Ponzi scheme accused Vinay Shah arrested in Nepal

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

The Rs 260-crore ponzi scamster Vinay Shah of Gujarat was arrested by the Nepal police near the capital Kathmandu on Monday, Gujarat police said on Monday.

Shah had been in hiding at his female friend’s house in Nepal, sources said.

Haresh Dudhat, Superintendent of Police (SP), CID crime, said, “Vinay Shah has been arrested from Pokhra near Kathmandu. He was in hiding with his woman friend Chandaa Thapa, who works in a spa in Delhi. Right now he’s in Nepal police’s custody and we already have our teams in Nepal who will get him in our custody after carrying out due procedures.”

According to Dudhat, Shah was arrested under various sections of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act as he carried more currency than is permissible. The Nepal police found Rs 30 lakh cash with Vinay and he was handed over to the revenue department of Nepal.

As India and Nepal are signatories of the extradition treaty, the CID Crime will take Shah’s custody after the Nepal authorities give their clearance, he said Dudhat.

“Going through the call details recordings (CDR), our investigations showed that the Shah couple could be hiding in Nepal. We were in constant touch with the Nepal police, and had sent a team to Nepal two days ago. The Nepal police called up our DGP, CID (Crime and Railways) to inform him of the arrest,” said Dudhat.

Shah carried with him currency of over Rs 30 lakhs in US dollars, pounds and Euros,” said Dudhat.

“The CID crime has recorded over 100 testimonies in the case. After the Shah couple disappeared, the police have recovered Rs 43 lakh from his house and around Rs 38 lakh in different bank accounts,” said Dudhat.

“We are quite confident that the duped people would recover their money. We also want people to come forward and register their complaints,” added Dudhat.

Vinay and his wife Bhargavi had allegedly cheated thousands of investors to the tune of Rs 260 crore through their companies, Archarcare LLP and Digi Locals, police said.

The Vastrapur police has filed three complaints in the case against the Shah couple and two others. The Gujarat government subsequently formed an SIT of CID Crime to investigate the scam.

SBI General Insurance plans IPO in 2020, aims to be in top-five non-life insurers

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

SBI General Insurance Company Ltd aims to be among the top five non-life insurers by investing in technology and launching new products, and seeks to go public through an initial share sale in 2020, a senior official said on Monday.

The company plans to boost the number of agents and other distribution channels, and focus on health insurance policies.

“We are investing in digital technology and looking at digital strategy. Now there are insurers that are purely into digital technology. The investment is part of our overall budget for information technology,” Lisa Jeffery, Deputy CEO, told reporters.

At a time when the industry is registering a 12 per cent growth, SBI General Insurance is clocking about 30 per cent business growth.

“We hope to log about 35 per cent growth in our gross domestic premium income (GDPI). During the first half of the current fiscal, the GDPI growth was about 30 per cent at Rs 2,067 crore and the net profit was at Rs 270 crore,” Jeffery added.

She said SBI General Insurance was one of the few players to have posted an underwriting profit, or premium income minus claims.

According to Jeffery, the company got 3,289 claims due to Kerala floods for a value of about Rs 168 crore, towards which Rs 64 crore has been paid out.

She said the company officials contacted the policyholders (insured) and told them about the insurance protection and claims procedure.

With respect to cyclone Gaja that devastated several districts in Tamil Nadu, the company has received 128 claims.

The fire premium rates continue to go down with the entry of purely online/digital insurers without the traditional set-up.

To a question, Jeffery said that IAG International was not planning to increase its stake in the company from the current 26 per cent to the maximum permissible 49 per cent.

The non-life insurer is a joint venture between State Bank of India (SBI) and IAG International.

In September, SBI sold a four per cent stake in SBI General at Rs 482 crore to Axis New Opportunities Fund (1.65 per cent) and Premji Invest (2.35 per cent), valuing the company at about Rs 12,000 crore.

After the deal, SBI holds a 70 per cent stake in SBI General Insurance.

Survey says most people unaware of Good Samaritan Law

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

A majority of the population is still unaware of the Good Samaritan Law which provides legal protection to bystanders who come to the aid of road accident victims, a national survey revealed on Monday.

SaveLIFE, a non-profit organisation, said 84 per cent are still unaware about their new rights even after two years of the Supreme Court judgement bringing into force the Good Samaritan Law.

The survey also revealed that though there has been an increase in the general willingness to help the victims, from 26 per cent in 2013 to 88 per cent in 2018, “in terms of concrete actions, the willingness to help the victims is still low”.

“Out of the respondents willing to help, only 29 per cent were willing to escort the victim to a hospital, 28 per cent were willing to call an ambulance and only 12 per cent said they would call the police,” the report by SaveLIFE said.

The study was conducted by MDRA across 11 cities — Delhi, Jaipur, Kanpur, Varanasi, Ludhiana, Bengaluru Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Indore and Kolkata. The sample size included 3,667 respondents including from the police, hospital administration, medical practitioners and trial court lawyers.

The survey also found that in total violation of the Supreme Court judgement, none of the hospitals surveyed had displayed a good Samaritan charter at their entrance, enumerating the rights of the people who bring or accompany the injured to the hospital.

“State and Central governments, Transport Ministry and hospitals need to create awareness about the law. Hospitals should put stickers on their entrance and schools should teach children about the law,” said Ajai Chowdhry, a recipient of Padma Bhushan and the HCL founder.

The report revealed that 96 per cent of the surveyed medical professionals admitted to not having a Good Samaritan law committee in their hospitals and 64 per cent of the surveyed police personnel admitted that they still take personal details of the Good Samaritan.

Commenting on the research report, Piyush Tewari, Foundation of the Good Samaritan Law citizens and CEO, SaveLIFE Foundation said, “It is quite evident from the study that even two years after the institution of the Good Samaritan Law, citizens are unaware of their new rights. So, people are still hesitant to help. Moreover, implementation of the SC judgement, even at the official level, has been remarkably low.”

Tewari suggested that the need of the hour is for states to translate the SC judgment into a State Good Samaritan Law.

SC pulls up Karnataka police over Kalburgi murder probe

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Karnataka police for not doing anything to unearth the murder of the rationalist M.M. Kalburgi outside his home in Dharwad on August 30, 2015.

“What have you done so far? You are just fooling around,” said the bench of Justice Fali Nariman and Justice Navin Sinha asking the state police to spell out how much time it would require to complete the investigation.

The strong observation from the bench came in the course of hearing of a petition by Uma Mallinath Devi, the widow of Kalburgi, seeking an SIT probe into his murder.

The top court had on January 10 sought the Centre’s response on a plea for the SIT probe.

Uma Devi had requested that the SIT be headed by either a retired judge of the top court or of a High court.

The notice was also been issued to CBI, NIA, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa governments.

Thousands bid emotional adieu to Kannada actor Ambareesh

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Thousands of people, including celebrities and political leaders, bid an emotional farewell to iconic Kannada actor M.H. Ambareesh at a state funeral here on Monday.

Ambareesh, 66, popularly known as a ‘rebel star’, died on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest at a hospital.

Ambareesh’s only son Abhishek lit the funeral pyre after the state reserve police gave a gun salute and a police band sounded the bugle at the state-run Kanteerava Studio in the city’s northwest suburb.

The last rites were performed as per Vokkaliga tradition and about 250 kg of firewood, including sandalwood, was used for the pyre.

The funeral site of the former Lok Sabha member from Congress and ex-Union Minister in the Studio is located adjacent to the memorial of Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar, who passed away in April 2006.

The funeral was delayed by two hours as the flower-bedecked cortege, carrying the body in a glass casket, took more than three hours to reach the Studio from the Kanteerava Stadium in the city centre.

Though vehicular traffic was cleared for the funeral procession on the 15 km route and hundreds of police personnel were deployed en route, the cortege moved slowly as lakhs thronged the route for a final glimpse of the popular actor, draped in tricolour with the famous Mysuru ‘peta’ (headgear) crowning his head.

Sandalwood stars Srinath, Jai Jagadish, Shiva Rajkumar, Puneeth Rajkumar, Upendra and Jaggesh, Telugu actor Mohan Babu and multi-lingual actress Jaya Prada were among the many from film world who attended the funeral.

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, many cabinet ministers, including D.K. Shivakumar and H.D. Revanna, Congress state President Dinesh Gundu Rao, BJP state unit president B.Y. Yeddyurappa and other political leaders and lawmakers were present at the funeral.

Ambareesh entered filmdom through the role of ‘Jaleel’ in veteran director Puttanna Kanagal’s “Naagarahaavu” in 1972 and has acted in over 200 films since then.
