A forward, Kannan played 14 matches for India and suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this month. There was a campaign on various social media platforms to raise funds for the family.
According to his former teammates, Kannan in his heydays dribbled past defenders like a magician.
For about a decade, the former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal forward was diagnosed with “severe osteoarthritis” that compounded his misery as he was a heart patient and had stent-implantation.
Kannan lived with his two daughters and wife in a one-bedroom apartment in a narrow bylane of Jawpur road in Dumdum and the family had made several appeals to his clubs and the state government to foot medical bills of the star of yesteryear.
“We have written to both his former clubs as we needed Rs 5 lakh (in 2009) for his knee replacements. But the only help we got was from East Bengal who had given him Rs 50,000. That’s all. Nobody cares about him now,” Kannan’s wife, Antoinette had told PTI in an interview two years ago.
Kannan was one of the few players of extraordinary calibre to have come to Bengal and had plied his trade both in Mohun Bagan (8 years) and East Bengal (2) and represented India at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games and 1968 Merdeka Cup before leaving the pitch in 1982.

Born in Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu, Kannan also played in Bengaluru and Chennai.
He played for four years for Universal RC in the Chennai Football Association (CFA) senior division football league.

Week after blasts, Sri Lanka bans all face coverings including burqa
A ban on all face veils was proposed by MP Ashu Marasinghe at a recent meeting of Sri Lankan cabinet.
Exactly a week after the Easter Sunday suicide bombings killed 253 people in the island nation, Sri Lanka issued a Presidential decree banning all forms of face covers including Islamic garments such as burqa.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena approved the call for a ban on the face covering under an emergency law.
In a press release issued late on Sunday, the government said, “Any form of face covering that will hinder identification of a person is banned under emergency regulations.”
“The ban is to ensure national security…No one should obscure their faces to make identification difficult,” the statement added.
A ban on all face veils was proposed by MP Ashu Marasinghe at a recent meeting of Sri Lankan cabinet.
Marasinghe, a member of the United National Party, had also declared on Facebook that he was going to present a private member’s bill about the issue. He said that the garment is not “a traditional Muslim attire”.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had advised the government to defer the matter until talks with Islamic clerics could be held.
The ban on face veils does not apply on hijab and chador as the two garments do not cover the face.
According to reports, the influential All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama too had asked women to avoid wearing a burqa or niqab in order to help security forces.
Reports state that Muslims across the country are concerned about their safety. Many have stopped wearing the burqa.
Authorities in Sri Lanka said that a total of 106 suspects have been arrested in multiple raids carried out across the country since the 21 April blasts at three churches and three five-star hotels.
Police are continuing their search for other members of the National Thowheeth Jamaath (NTJ), the local terror outfit and splinter group of the Islamic State, which carried out the blast.
President Maithripala Sirisena said on Friday that over 130 suspects linked to the terror group have been operating in the country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka needs new laws to deal with threats posed by local terror outfits linked to ISIS.
The blasts also left at least 500 people injured in the serial bombings as well.R
In counter affidavit in Supreme Court, Rahul Gandhi again regrets ‘chowkidar chor hai’ comment
Congress president Rahul Gandhi has filed a counter affidavit in the Supreme Court reiterating his stand and again expressing regret on his remarks on the Rafale verdict. Gandhi said that unfortunate references to the court order and juxtaposition of the political slogan in the same breath ought not to be construed as suggesting that the court had given any finding or conclusion on that issue.
“It is unfortunate that this slogan got intermingled with my comments on and references to the apex court’s order dated 15.04.2019. My statement was made in the heat of political campaigning,” he said in his affidavit.
The court had on April 23 issued a criminal contempt notice to Gandhi for his remarks on its verdict in the Rafale case. Gandhi had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a thief attributing his remark to the court’s judgement.
The Congress president had claimed that the apex court has made it “clear” that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “committed a theft”. He had made the statement while interacting with reporters in Amethi after filing his nomination papers.
BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi had moved court against Rahul Gandhi’s remark. “The words used and attributed by him to Supreme Court in the Rafale case has been made to appear something else. He is replacing his personal statement as Supreme Court’s order and trying to create prejudice,” Lekhi said in her petition.
The Supreme Court will hear contempt case against Gandhi along with Rafale review petitions on April 30.
