May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, May 10 : Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and former batsman VVS Laxman on Friday came out in support of former cricketer and East Delhi BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir after AAP accused him of distributing offensive pamphlets against his rival Atishi Marlena.

Taking to Twitter, Harbhajan Singh and Laxhman vouched that Gambhir could never talk ill of any woman.
”Shocked to hear about yesterday’s developments. Having known Gautam Gambhir for nearly two decades, I can vouch for his integrity, character and the respect he has for women”, Laxman tweeted.

Earlier on Thursday, Harbhajan Singh also tweeted saying that ‘Gambhir could never talk ill of any woman’ and that he was above such acts of bringing humiliation to women.
”I am shocked to note yesterday’s events involving @GautamGambhir. I know him well and he can never talk ill for any woman. Whether he wins or loses is another matter but the man is above all this”, Harbhajan had tweeted .

Meanwhile, Cricketer-turned-politician Gambhir sent defamation notices to three senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders for allegedly accusing him of distributing derogatory pamphlets against Ms Atishi.

In the notice, Gambhir demanded an unconditional apology from the AAP leaders and asked them to withdraw their allegations against him.
On Thursday, AAP’s east Delhi candidate, Atishi had held a press conference alleging that Gambhir distributed a pamphlet containing “obscene and derogatory” remarks against her in the constituency.
Atishi broke down while reading a pamphlet containing demeaning remarks against her, which she alleged was distributed in the constituency by her rival Gambhir.
However, the Bhartiya Janata Party candidate denied the allegation in strong terms and termed it as a conspiracy by AAP against him. He also challenged Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to prove the allegations leveled against him and said would quit politics if the charge is proven.

Later, Gambhir in a series of tweets slammed Kejriwal and accused him of outraging a woman’s modesty.

Will tender resignation drafted by Kejriwal if proven guilty: Gautam Gambhir

May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

A day after AAP candidate from Delhi East Atishi accused her BJP opponent Gautam Gambhir of circulating pamphlets with derogatory and casteist remarks against her, the latter asserted that if proven guilty, he would request AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal to draft his resignation letter, which he will tender publicly.

Speaking to ANI, Gambhir said he would retire from politics the day allegations against him are proven.

“If he has proof, then he must bring it today. My resignation would be written by Arvind Kejriwal and I will sign it publicly,” said Gambhir.

“If they have proof I am ready to take retirement from politics today itself. I will take retirement on May 23 if they come with proof but what if he doesn’t turn up with proof? Will he resign as Delhi Chief Minister and retire from politics?” he asked.

Gambhir went on to say that it is because of people like Kejriwal that “good” people don’t enter politics.

“You know why good people avoid entering politics? It is because of people like Arvind Kejriwal. They know they have to fight people like Arvind Kejriwal who can stoop to any low just for the sake of winning elections,” he said.

On Friday, Gambhir sent a defamation notice to Atishi, Kejriwal, and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, demanding an unconditional apology for making “defamatory” comments against him.

This came hours after Atishi, while addressing media in the national capital, claimed that pamphlets were being circulated with derogatory and casteist remarks against her.

“They have shown how low they can stoop. Pamphlet states that `she is a very good example of a mixed breed`,” Atishi had said.

Delhi, which has seven Lok Sabha seats at stake, will go to polls on May 12. Counting of votes will take place on May 23. East Delhi constituency will witness a triangular contest between Gambhir, Atishi and Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely.

We will form the next government, 2019 will not be like 1996: Nitin Gadkari to

May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

Speaking exclusively to media, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said that he does not harbour prime ministerial ambition and that he is confident that the BJP will form the next government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gadkari also said that the NDA is not a one-man government and every minister has a voice in the decision-making process.

As the Union minister spoke on a host of other issues, he said that 2019 is not an election of regional parties as the polity is divided between the NDA and the UPA.

“2019 is not 1996. Most of the regional parties will take a decision after the results come out and will align with either the NDA or the UPA. The federal front has no future,” he said.

Gadkari also took on the critics on the issue of the government interfering in the work of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He told WION that the RBI is not an autonomous institution as it works within the larger umbrella of the government.

He added that the government has full right to advice and direct the RBI for the benefit of people.

“We are the elected representatives. People will come to us in case of an economic downturn, so it becomes our responsibility to set things right when required,” said Gadkari.

Gadkari also openly defended the candidature of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur who is contesting against Congress’ Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat.

He said that Sadhvi has been a victim of a conspiracy hatched by the Congress which had spawned the myth of Hindu terrorism. “She is innocent and will win the elections from Bhopal,” he said.

He also spoke on the farm crisis and said that it is a result of the economic policies of the Congress. He said that the agricultural sector needs a lot of innovation and needs to respond to the new global economy. On the issue subsidy, Gadkari said that subsidy is required as the farm sector is under a tremendous strain.

Downplaying the role of the RSS in the government, Gadkari said that the RSS does not interfere in the work of the government. “It is a wrong perception,” he said.

US air attack kills 13 ISIL fighters in Somalia

May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

The US military has stepped up its campaign of air raids in Somalia since President Donald Trump took office.

US forces are partnering African Union troops (AMISOM) and the Somali security forces in combined counterterrorism operations

The US military has killed 13 ISIL fighters in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region in an air attack, it said, days after another raid killed three.

The US military has stepped up its campaign of air raids in Somalia since President Donald Trump took office, saying it has killed more than 800 fighters in two years.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) has gathered recruits in Puntland, although experts say the scale of its force is unclear and it remains a small player compared with the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group that once controlled much of Somalia.

US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said late on Thursday that the latest raid on Wednesday targeted an ISIL-Somalia camp in the Golis Mountains.

“At this time, it is assessed the air strike on May 8 killed 13 terrorists,” it said.

In April, AFRICOM had said it killed Abdulhakim Dhuqub, identifying him as ISIL’s deputy leader in Somalia.

Last month, AFRICOM also said it has resumed air raids against the al-Shabab group in Somalia after a brief pause that followed a critical report condemning the “shroud of secrecy around civilian deaths” caused by the US military.

The aerial bombardment was believed to be the first since Amnesty International said in a March 18 report that 14 civilians had been killed and seven wounded in the course of five air raids between April 2017 and December 2018, all attributed to the US military.

Initially, AFRICOM denied its operations had resulted in any civilian deaths, but later acknowledged that a woman and a child had been killed in an April 2018 raid.

Somalia has been mired in a civil war and armed rebellion since 1991 when clan warlords overthrew a dictator and then turned on each other.

Al-Shabab was pushed out of the capital Mogadishu in 2011, but retains a strong presence in parts of southern and central Somalia and has often clashed with the ISIL.

Nun rape | Kerala court extends bail of Bishop Franco Mulakkal till June 7

May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

The Pala magistrate court in Kottayam on Friday extended till June 7 the bail of former Jalandhar bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of sexually assaulting a nun between 2014 and 2016.

The court extended the bail where Mulakkal appeared in person. The court has posted the case for June 7.

Mulakkal who was arrested on September 21 last year in Kochi after three consecutive days of interrogation by the state police, is currently out on bail.

The Kerala Police on Tuesday submitted a 1,400-page chargesheet to the court against the bishop.

It names 83 witnesses, including the Cardinal of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Mar George Alencherry, three bishops, 11 priests and several nuns.

The chargesheet was filed almost seven months after his arrest.

The Bishop’s arrest came after a nun complained that she was raped multiple times between 2014-16. The crime had occurred at a convent in Kottayam district.

The police in its remand report to a trial court had stated that Franco Mulakkal came to the convent with the intention of sexually assaulting the victim.

Four nuns had rallied behind the complainant calling for a speedy filing of the chargesheet.

Last month, the protesting nuns submitted a petition at Kottayam SP’s office seeking the speedy filing of the chargesheet.

The demand for the speedy filing of chargesheet came just over a month after the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was urged to ensure their safety by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Centre says Rafale not for ornamentation but national security; SC reserves order on review plea

May 10, 2019 by Nasheman

India and France got into a deal in 2015 for the procurement of Rafale fighter jets.

The Supreme Court on Friday reserved order on Rafale review petitions against its December 14, 2018 judgement upholding the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Earlier on Thursday, three petitioners, former Union Ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie and activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan had claimed in the Supreme Court that the Centre played fraud upon the court to obtain favourable order in the Rafale fighter jet case.

The petitioners filed a rejoinder stating the December 14, 2018 verdict should be subjected to a review as it was based on “multiple falsehoods and suppression of material and relevant information”.

The top court had dismissed the plea filed by Sinha, Shourie and Bhushan, who sought investigation into alleged irregularities in the Rafale deal.

The petitioners said since the government was suppressing information, they have sought production of relevant and material documents before the court.

Bhushan on Friday pointed out that a non-existent CAG report was referred to in the December verdict. He also claimed that three out of the seven-member International Negotiating Team (INT) had also raised objections to the inflated pricing of the Rafale aircraft.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, however, cited a CAG report to argue India got Rafale at a cheaper price. “Will this court sit on the computation of the prices? And what happens thereafter? Will this court then fix the prices of the aircraft and avionics?” questioned Venugopal.

The AG, on behalf of the Centre, argued that the deal was a matter of national security and cannot be examined by any court.

“This (Rafale fighter) is not for ornamentation. This is an essential requirement for protection of each and every one of us… Nowhere in the world will any such matter be brought before the court,” KK Venugopal, the centre’s top law officer, told the judges.

On May 4, the government filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court in the Rafale case, opposing the reopening of the whole matter by contending that the petitioners were attempting to get “a fishing and roving inquiry ordered”.

The Centre further said that monitoring of progress by the PMO cannot be construed as interference or parallel negotiations.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court had on 10 April admitted three documents connected to the Dassault Rafale fighter jet deal as evidence in the review petitions and dismissed the Centre’s “preliminary objections” to them.

The Supreme Court on December 14 last year gave a clean chit to the Centre on the procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.

A three-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed all the petitions and said that no probe was required.
