English umpire Nigel Llong could face the BCCI’s scrutiny for allegedly damaging the door of a stadium room after an argument with Virat Kohli but the Indian board is unlikely to remove him as an official for the IPL final on 12 May .

Llong reportedly lost his cool after being confronted by Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Kohli over a contentious no ball call against Sunrisers Hyderabad during an IPL match on Saturday, 4 May, in Bengaluru.

According to reports, the ICC Elite Panel official kicked the door of the umpires’ room during the innings break and damaged it.

A BCCI official told PTI that Llong might have some explaining to do but the matter will not cost him his place as a designated umpire for the IPL final to be held in Hyderabad.

The BCCI, it is learnt, is in a dilemma on whether to even consider taking such a step “for a moment’s indiscretion”.

In Bengaluru, Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary R Sudhakar Rao said the KSCA has demanded action against Llong. Rao, however, did say that the 50-year-old paid for the damage caused.“We have reported the matter to the Committee of Administrators (COA) and hopefully action will be taken against Nigel Llong. If the players are punished for their misdemeanour and fined their match fees then why not the umpires.”R Sudhakar Rao

“I didn’t speak to umpire Llong but I spoke to match referee Narayanan Kutty. I am hopeful COA will take action,” he added.

Llong paid Rs 5,000 after he was confronted by the KSCA officials and had demanded a receipt of the payment.

Llong has stood in 56 Tests, 123 ODIs and 32 T20 Internationals in his career and will be standing in the upcoming World Cup in the United Kingdom, starting 30 May.

India, U.S. to engage regularly to resolve trade issues, says government

India and the United States are locked in disputes over tariffs, price caps India has imposed on imported U.S. medical devices and over rules banning companies from selling products via firms in which they have an equity interest.

“Both sides agreed to engage regularly at various levels   to resolve outstanding trade issues by exploring suitable solutions, which are mutually beneficial,” the government said in the statement.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had said earlier on Monday he planned to discuss India’s new e-commerce rules that could have an impact on operations of firms such as Amazon and Walmart with his Indian counterpart on Monday.

India also prohibits companies from making deals with sellers to sell exclusively on their platforms, rules which could affect investment plans of foreign firms in India’s fast-growing market set to touch $200 billion by 2027.

“Both sides agreed to deepen economic cooperation and bilateral trade by ensuring greater cooperation amongst stakeholders, including government, businesses and entrepreneurs,” the government said.  

In March, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

India is the world’s biggest beneficiary of that trade concession, called the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), and its withdrawal would be the strongest punitive action against the country since Trump took office in 2017.

Two Indian trade ministry sources had said the government was hoping for a breakthrough in the talks. One said India wanted the United States to review its decision on GSP and also hopes the it will defer its decision to withdraw trade privileges until India’s general elections are over on May 19.

Political and security ties between India and the United States have grown but trade has become problematic. Indian officials said both sides are likely to emphasize strategic ties and try to manage trade differences.

“The messaging is a re-assurance that the U.S. thinks of India as a strategic partner and the relationship cannot be colored by differences on trade,” one of the sources said.

Total U.S. trade with India stood at $87.5 billion in 2018, with the deficit at $21.3 billion.

India has held off implementation of new tariffs on U.S. goods after Washington refused to give it an exemption on higher steel duties.

AIR MARSHAL TD JOSEPH TOOK OVER AS SENIOR AIR STAFF OFFICER OF HEADQUARTERS

Air Marshal TD Joseph, Vayu Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, assumed charge  as the Senior Air Staff Officer at the Bangalore based Headquarters of Training Command of the Indian Air Force.

       Air Marshal TD Joseph was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in December 1982. He was the winner of the Nawanagar Sword of Honour and President’s Plaque for standing first in Order of Merit in his batch of pilots. He has flown over 3800 hours on various fighter and trainer aircraft. He is a Category “A” Qualified Flying Instructor with over 1500 hours of instructional experience and was an Air Force Examiner. He has commanded a Fighter Squadron in the Eastern Sector, the Flying Instructors’ School at Chennai and a major Air Base in the Western Sector. As an Air Vice Marshal he was the Air Defence Commander in the South Western Sector and Eastern Sector. Prior to the current assignment he was a senior faculty in the internationally renowned National Defence College, New Delhi. 

        For his distinguished service to the nation he was bestowed the Presidential awards of Vayu Sena Medal in 2003 and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2010. 

      He has published several articles on air power and national security matters and is the author of a book “Winning India’s Next War – Role of Airspace Power”.   He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Royal College of Defence Studies, London and King’s College, London. 

       The Air Marshal was born in Ayarkunnam village in Kottayam District, Kerala to Pulikunnel PT Devasia & Rosamma Devasia in a farming family. He did senior school studies at Loyola School Trivandrum and Mayo College Ajmer. He is married to Sophie  and the couple has two sons, 

Kartarpur corridor: India asks Pakistan to build bridge on Ravi river

India has asked Pakistan to build a bridge on Ravi river to manage the flow of water and prevent flood damages.

The matter was raised by Indian authorities in an official note to Islamabad during the first week of May.

The issue was earlier raised on April 16 in the second technical meet on Kartarpur .

Work is on in full swing on the Indian side to build the corridor. New Delhi is building a Passenger Terminal Building (PTB ) at the cost of Rs 195 crore on its side of the border, which is expected to be completed by September.

Around 50 acres of land has been demarcated to build the PTB with Rs 10 crore been given as compensation for land acquisition done for the project.

Passenger Terminal Building will be able to cater to 5000 pilgrims per day.

In March, India had postponed the second India-Pakistan official talks over Khalistani concerns.

Khalistani and close aide of Hafiz Saeed, Gopal Singh Chawla was appointed to Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak committee by Pakistan, irking New Delhi. 

The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak committee will overlook the construction of Kartarpur corridor in Pakistan.

Pakistan is yet to respond on New Delhi’s concerns.

The matter was raised by Indian authorities in an official note to Islamabad during the first week of May.

252 FIRs, DD entries against political parties, others for poll code violation: Delhi CEO

New Delhi, May 6 : Over 250 FIRs and daily diary (DD) entries were registered against political parties and others here till date for violation of the model code of conduct, officials said Monday.

The statistics surveillance team of Delhi’s Chief Electoral Office, constituted to keep an eye on the expenses of political parties, has seized Rs 4.08 crore in cash and 1412 kg of narcotics and drugs.

“A total of 252 FIRs or DD entries have been lodged till date in connection with violation of the model code of conduct,” the office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said in a statement.

“Out of these, 28 are against the Aam Aadmi Party (16 FIRs and 12 DD entries), 36 against the Bharatiya Janata Party (17 FIRs and 19 DD entries), 20 against the Congress (five FIRs and 15 DD entries), two against the Bahujan Samaj Party (two FIRs), the Samajwadi Party (one DD entry), five against the CPI(M) (two FIRs and three DD entries) and 160 (156 FIRs and four DD entries) are against others or non-political (entities),” it said.

The office of the Delhi CEO said over 3.51 lakh posters, banners and hoardings have been removed since March 10, when the poll code came into force.

“As many as 30,533 posters, banners and hoardings were removed from areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council, 43,075 from East Delhi Municipal Corporation areas, 2,411 from Delhi Cantonment Board, 1,58,488 from South Delhi Municipal Corporation, and 1,16,836 from North Delhi Municipal Corporation areas,” the statement said.

Police have registered 1,297 FIRs and arrested 1,293 people under the Excise Act, it said. They have also seized 668 unlicensed arms and weapons, and 2,639 cartridges and explosives.

As many as 1,07,517 people have been booked till date under various sections of the CrPC and the Delhi Police Act.

“Till date, 1,764 bottles, 109 half-sized bottles, 2,14,960 quarter-sized ones of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and 2,080 bottles, 1,916 half-sized and 4,73,029 quarter-sized ones of country liquor and 6,963 bottles of beer have been seized,” the statement said.

Polling for the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi will be held in the sixth phase on May 12.

As many as 164 candidates are in the fray in Delhi, where the polls is largely being seen as a triangular contest among the AAP, BJP and the Congress.

Of the over 1.43 crore voters in Delhi, 78,73,022 are male and 64,42,762 female, while 669 belong to the third gender. The number of overseas electors stands at 40 while count of service voters is 11,005.

Patient wrongly told to be HIV+ by AIIMS Rishikesh gets Rs 60,000 compensation

A fine worth Rs 60,000 was imposed on All India Institue of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh after it gave out the wwrong report to a person. The report stated that the man was HIV positive.

Haridwar: A fine worth Rs 60,000 was imposed on All India Institue of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh after it gave out the wwrong report to a person. The report stated that the man was HIV positive. The fine was levied by the Haridwar consumer forum. 

According to the court, the report “delivered inadequate services thereby causing mental trauma to the complainant”. AIIMS has been asked to pay the fine within a month. The aggrieved was identified as Naseem Ali. 

A resident of Bhagwanpur, the aggrieved had visited the hospital to get an injury treated in July 2014. However, the aggrieved was admitted to the hospital after finding out that his blood was not clotting properly. The aggrieved was then referred to AIIMS Rishikesh. 

At AIIMS, the aggrieved was told that he was HIV positive. After his health kept getting worse, Ali was admitted to the Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital. It was here that the aggrieved was detected HIV negative. The aggrieved then approached the district consumer forum. ADVERTISING

The complaint was filed against DR BBS Saini Kalawati Hospital, AIIMS Rishikesh and United Indian Insurance Company. Apart from the Rs 50,000 fine of AIIMS Rishikesh, the consumer forum also asked AIIMS to pay Rs 10,000 for “wasting the complainant’s time and energy”. The order of the forum stated that if the fine is paid within one month, annual interest of 6 per cent on the amount. 

While talking to the Times of India, SK Bhama, an advocate stated that the test reports caused mental trauma to the aggrieved. A spokesperson of AIIMS Rishikesh stated that the test result was a documentation error and that they will appeal against the judgement in the state consumer forum.

EC clean chit to PM Modi on Ahmedabad ‘roadshow’, Balakot reference at Karnataka rally: Reports

Of the 11 complaints filed against Modi for poll violations, EC has given a clean chit to the PM in six cases.

The Election Commission has reportedly given clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in two more cases of alleged violation of poll code.

The Congress had moved the Election Commission alleging that PM Modi took out a “road show” after casting his vote on April 23 in Ahmedabad and made political remarks in violation of the model code of conduct.

The EC had sought a report from the chief electoral officer of Gujarat on the matter.

However, the EC has given clean chit to PM Modi in the matter.

Another case relates to a rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Chitradurga in Karnataka on April 9, where while greeting first-time voters across the country, he asked them to dedicate their vote to the heroes of Balakot strike.

Citing how a strong government functions, Modi again referred to the Balakot air strike in response to the Pulwama carnage.

“There was a time five years ago when Pakistan’s terrorists used to attack us and Pakistan used to threaten us. Our brave soldiers used to seek permission for action, but the government then sat in fear. This Chowkidar (watchman) has changed the situation. Now if there is fear, it is on the other side of the border. People sitting in power there are getting different types of nightmares… Terrorists are frightened after Balakot attack,” he said in his speech.

“The chief minister (HD Kumaraswamy) here went a step ahead and said the bravery of Indian soldiers should not be spoken because it will affect their vote bank… I want to ask the chief minister whether his vote bank is in India or in Pakistan? The chief minister should clarify,” PM Modi further said.

Under the BJP’s watch it is the policy of “New India” that it will kill terrorists by barging into their dens, he added.

PM Modi had spoken on similar lines earlier on that day in Maharashtra’s Latur. The EC had given him a clean chit in that case as well. However, one of the two election commissioners had given a dissenting view in the decision of the ‘full Election Commission’ to give clean chit to the PM.

Of the 11 complaints filed against Modi for poll violations, EC has given a clean chit to the PM in six cases. However, none of the orders has been published on the poll panel’s website, which is normally done in other cases.

“There were 11 cases, six have been disposed off. The Supreme Court had given us time till Monday to reply. The reply has been filed and the next scheduled hearing is on Wednesday. We will not comment on it as the matter is sub judice,” said the Deputy Election Commissioner Saxena.

Congress MP Sushmita Dev had filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking urgent and necessary directions to the Election Commission to take a decision on the complaints filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah over alleged violations of electoral laws during campaigning.

Following this, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Election Commission.

Chandrababu Naidu to participate in Mamata Banerjee’s poll rallies

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will participate in poll rallies of his West Bengal counterpart, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in the state.

According to a highly-placed source in the Andhra Pradesh government, Naidu will arrive here Wednesday morning and participate in two campaign rallies of Banerjee one scheduled at Jhargram and the second at Haldia.

After spending Wednesday night at Haldia, Naidu, who is also the Telegu Desam Party president, will speak at another campaign rally at Kharagpur the next day, the official told PTI.

After the meeting in Kharagpur, both the chief ministers will head towards Kolkata where they are likely to have a close door meeting on Thursday evening, he said adding Naidu is scheduled to leave that night itself, the source said.

Naidu shares a very cordial relationship with Banerjee. He had joined the Trinamool Congress’ mega opposition rally here in January and visited Banerjee during her dharna in February against CBI’s attempt to question the Kolkata Police chief in connection with chit fund scams.

Banerjee had also participated in a political rally organised by Naidu in Vizag.
