Congress stalwarts make exit greenhorns in the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, May 24 : Two Congress stalwarts in Karnataka, including Congress group leader in the 17th Lok Sabha, Mallikarjuna Kharge and former Union minister K H Muniyappa, who never lost any elections in their career, succumbed to the BJP opponents, who were first timers in seeking entry to the Lok Sabha.

Mallikarjuna Kharge, had never lost any elections since his debut to the politics in 1972 and won as many as 11 elections to the Karnataka Assembly and two times for the Lok Sabha, before tasting the first electoral defeat on May 23 from Kalaburagi Lok Sabha seat.

The Congress leader, met his Waterloo at the hands of Umesh Jadhav, a former Congress MLA, and changed colours to the saffron Saffron party, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections by a margin of over one lakh votes.

The BJP leaders including Narendra Modi, had targeted Kharge, before the Elections, had arranged a huge public rally, at Kalaburagi, the bastion of the Congress and succeeded and Umesh Jadhav embered as the giant slayer.

This led to the BJP sweep across all regions of Karnataka taking 25 out of 28 seats and another independent in key Mandya supported by it, Sumalatha win against JD(S) candidate Nikhil K, son of chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. Earlier, in the Assembly elections, JD(S) had won all seven seats in this Lok Sabha seat.

Meanwile, Umesh Jadhav, riding on the strong Modi Wave, delivered a strong blow on congress defeating his one-time mentor Mallikarjuna Kharge, the Congress Party leader in the Lok Sabha till now, by a huge margin of over one lakh votes on Friday.

Similarly, former Union minister and 7-time MP, K H Muniyappa, who also had never lost any elections, was also served a surprise defeat by the BJP by fielding another greenhorn Muniswamy, a Corporator in the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Muniyappa had lost the seat to the BJP candidate with a margin of over two lakh votes.

Muniyappa was representing the Kolar Lok Sabha reserved for SC, since 1991 had never lost any elections before.

He had also served as Union minister of state for Railways and Surface Transport in the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh.

Lotus 2.0: Hectic political activities among coalition Congress and JD(S) partners

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, May 24 : After receiving a severe drubbing in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the JD(S)-Congress leaders are holding series of parleys to decide future course of action.

Senior Congress leaders, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, and senior Ministers in the coalition government are meeting at the residence of Siddaramaiah and working out strategies to be taken in the event of the Opposition BJP is pressing hard to topple the one-year-old JD(S)-Congress coalition government.

The Congress leaders who were in shock after witnessing one of the worst backlash in the Lok Sabha elections, however, maintained that the verdict in the Lok Sabha should not be seen as against the mandate of the state government.

In his immediate reaction over receiving the drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections, the former chief minister Siddaramaiah, had maintained that the Lok Sabha results was a mandate for Narendra Modi and people have not voted against the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka.

He had also rubbished the demand of the State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa for the resignation of the coalition government owning moral responsibility.

Meanwhile Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had convened an informal meeting of the state Cabinet, today, reportedly to decide the future course of action, in the backdrop of the humiliating defeat of the Alliance partners, the Congress and the JD(S).

According to JD(S) sources, Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who was deeply saddened with the political setback in the Lok Sabha elections, in which his son Nikhil was also lost to an independent candidate in Mandya, is reportedly not keen to continue in the office.

He had also convened a meeting of the JD(S) legislators meeting after the Cabinet meeting and take their views on continuing alliance with the Congress, which had been flopped badly.

It may be recalled that both the Congress and the JD(S) which had a pre-poll alliance had fought the Lok Sabha elections jointly, sharing the seats among themselves.

While the Congress had chose to contest in 21 seats, it had allotted as many as 7 remaining seats in Karnataka to its new-found political ally JD(S).

When the results were announced both the Congress and the JD(S) had to content with bagging one seat among themselves, in the total number of 28 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress and the JD(S) had formed the government in 2018 May, with alliance, as no parties got clear majority, and the Opposition BJP had emerged as the single largest party by bagging 106 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.

Both the Congress and the JD(S) parties, leaving aside their rivalries had come together for the first time in Karnataka and the JD(S) which had won only 37 Assembly seats had formed the Government with the Congress, which had secured 80 seats in the Assembly elections.

India, New Zealand seek tune-up in warm-up clash

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

London, May 24 : The Indian team, led by Virat Kohli will take on Kane Williamson’s
New Zealand at The Oval on Saturday, aiming to find answers to their ideal playing
combinations ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.
India had won four consecutive ODI series, including the Asia Cup, before they were
handed their first ODI series loss at home since October 2015 by Australia.
The outcome posted serious questions on the team’s balance going into the World
Cup. However, a large part of the squad, including the skipper Virat Kohli, seem to be
in fine form, thanks to some stellar individual performances during the recently
concluded Indian Premier League.
Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya’s recent form come as a great
positive. Rohit Sharma, India’s opening batsman and vice-captain, and Kuldeep Yadav,
the left-arm wrist-spinner, were among two of India’s key players that were a bit
off-colour during the IPL though. They will want to make amends during the warm-ups.
New Zealand lost the ODI series to India at home but redeemed themselves after
clean-sweeping Bangladesh with three resounding wins. The batting unit which revolves
around the experienced trio of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor is
capable of posting big totals against any opposition. Tom Latham’s finger injury presents
opportunity for the uncapped Tom Blundell to justify his selection in the national squad.
A well-rounded pace attack, quality spinners and genuine all-rounders make up a
formidable unit for the Kiwis. New Zealand, who had their best ever World Cup
campaign in 2015 will look to fine-tune things quickly to try and go the whole distance
this time.
Squads:
India: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar,
MS Dhoni (WK), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav,
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed
Shami
New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Tom Blundell (wk), Trent Boult, Colin de
Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (wk),
Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim
Southee, Ross Taylor.

Deadly explosion hits mosque in Afghanistan’s Kabul

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

A bomb exploded at a mosque, killing two people, including the prayer leader in Paktia Kot area of Kabul.2 hours ago

Two people, including a senior muslim preacher, were killed and at least 16 wounded after an explosion in a mosque during Friday prayers in the Afghan capital.

The explosion took place around 01:20pm (08:50 GMT) and targeted the al-Taqwa mosque at a time when dozens had gathered for afternoon prayers.

Jan Agha, a district police official, said the bomb was planted in the microphone used by the prayer leader, Mawlawi Samiullah Raihan, during Friday prayers.

“Unfortunately in the blast, Mawlawi Raihan has been martyred and 16 other worshippers were wounded,” said Nasrat Rahimi, spokesperson for the interior ministry.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) groups regularly stage attacks in the country’s capital.

Earlier this month, the Taliban attacked the offices of Counterpart International in Kabul, an NGO headquartered in the United States that has been operating in Afghanistan since 2005.

The Taliban has stepped up attacks across the country, even as it holds direct negotiations with officials from the US to end the 17-year war in Afghanistan.

Pakistan PM Khan seeks peace talks after Modi’s election win

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Modi’s campaign included promises to ‘punish’ Pakistan for allegedly supporting the armed revolt in Kashmir.by Asad Hashim4 hours ago

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistani Prime MinisterImran Khan has congratulated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on what appears to be a landslide win in his country’s general election, adding that he looked forward to working with him “for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia”.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 303 seats out of the 542 that it contested in the elections, election results showed. The result means the right-wing party is set to overtake its current tally of 282 seats in parliament, further strengthening Modi’s hold on power.

Known for his support for Hindu nationalism, Modi’s campaign included strong messaging on national security and promises to “punish” Pakistan for allegedly supporting the armed revolt in the disputed region of Kashmir.

Following Khan’s tweet on Thursday, Modi thanked the Pakistani prime minister for his “good wishes”, saying he had “always given primacy to peace and development in our region”.

Tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours remain high after a military standoff earlier this year saw both countries launch air raids on each other’s territory, and an Indian fighter jet shot down in an aerial dogfight.

That skirmish followed a suicide attack in the disputed territory of Kashmir, which India and Pakistan both claim in full but administer in parts.

The attack, in the town of Pulwama in mid-February, killed at least 40 Indian security personnel, with India blaming Pakistan for “controlling” the attack. Pakistan denied the accusation.

On February 26, Indian aircraft conducted air raids on Pakistani territory, claiming to have destroyed a training camp run by the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) armed group.

An Al Jazeera visit to the site of the bombing found little evidence to support the claim. At least four Indian bombs appeared to have hit a hillside near a JeM-run school, wounding one man.

As a show of force, Pakistan carried out retaliatory air strikes on unpopulated areas in Indian-administered Kashmir a day later. An Indian fighter jet was shot down that same day and the pilot captured.

He was returned to India two days later, in a move aimed to defuse mounting fears of open conflict.

Modi’s BJP made the air attacks and his government’s hardline stance against Pakistan a key part of their election platform.

Before the election, the Pakistani president had expressed the opinion that having a hardline right-wing government in India made it easier to hold peace talks.READ MORE

Analysts, however, warn that it is possible that Modi, while empowered by his mandate, may also be locked into a position based on election rhetoric.

“His whole election campaign was based on two things: national security and taking tough action on Pakistan,” Zahid Hussain, a security analyst, told Al Jazeera.

“So I don’t think the situation will change for the time being.”

Hussain said the massive election victory for Modi’s BJP may, in fact, “reinforce his hardline position”.

“He may now demand that Pakistan come to its knees to hold talks.”

Khan’s government was grappling with an economic crisis at home, the central bank raising interest rates to 12.25 percent earlier this week to attempt to curb rising inflation and the country’s current account deficit.

This week, central bank data showed the country’s fiscal deficit was up to five percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first nine months of the financial year, a 10-year high.READ MORE

“Pakistan seems to be quite desperate to find a way forward, also because of its economic situation and external pressures,” said Hussain. “There is certainly a willingness to move forward from Pakistan.”

On Wednesday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.

“I made it clear to her that we want to amicably resolve all issues,” Qureshi said in a statement released after the meeting.

India’s foreign ministry did not comment on that meeting.

Trump orders intelligence agencies to join probe into 2016 campaign surveillance

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Moscow, May 24 (Sputnik) US President Donald Trump authorized the US intelligence community to engage in an investigation led by US Attorney General William Barr into surveillance activities surrounding his 2016 presidential election campaign, the White House has said.
“Today, at the request and recommendation of the Attorney General of the United States, President Donald J. Trump directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the Attorney General’s investigation into surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election,” the White House press secretary said in a statement late on Thursday.
Trump also authorized the attorney general to declassify data as part of the probe.
“Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions,” the statement added.
The surveillance activities that affected some of the members of the Trump campaign team back in 2016 are seen by many as one of the origins of the probe into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the run-up to the presidential election, won by Trump.
While the probe failed to establish evidence of the alleged collusion, which was denied by both Moscow and Trump, in April, Barr announced an investigation into its origins.

In mid-May, Barr assigned John Durham, the US attorney in Connecticut, to look into the origins of the Russia probe.
