Delhi Metro Magenta Line Delayed By 'Technical Snag', Again

The delay cause overcrowding at stations as trains ran at increased 20 minute intervals
NEW DELHI:

Trains on Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line were delayed by more than 30 minutes today morning, with services affected by what the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) called a “technical snag”. The delay led to trains running at 20 minute intervals instead of the usual 10, and scenes of overcrowding.

The Magenta Line runs from the Janakpuri West station to Botanical Gardens in Noida. Under normal conditions, the journey – a distance of approximately 40 kilometres – takes 56 minutes to complete.

“The snag occurred sometime around 7 am between Palam and Terminal 1 stations, leading to a delay in services between Janakpuri West and Terminal 1 IGI Airport stations,” a senior DMRC official said.

July 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Karnataka Floor Test Today, Karnataka Trust Vote : Stung by the resignation of 15 MLAs, the strength of Kumaraswamy government in the 225-member Assembly to 102 MLAs compared to the opposition BJP’s 105 MLAs plus two Independents.

Karnataka floor test LIVE updates: Speaker says trust vote to be held by 6 pm today, summons rebel MLAs

The political drama in Karnataka continues with the Assembly being adjourned close to midnight on Monday, with a fresh deadline of 6 pm Tuesday to complete the floor test. “Don’t make me a breaker of promises… It will not bring respect to the House or to me,” Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar said, reminding the H D Kumaraswamy-led government to honour their commitment to conclude the trust vote proceedings on Monday.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, however, changed track and requested the Speaker to postpone the vote till the Supreme Court clarifies its order on the issue of a whip to 15 rebel coalition MLAs who had resigned. The Speaker has also directed the rebel MLAs to appear before him at 11 am Tuesday to respond to a complaint of disqualification filed against them.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, is likely to take up for hearing a fresh plea filed by two Independent Karnataka MLAs, seeking holding of the floor test “forthwith” in the state Assembly. The MLAs who withdrew support to the ruling coalition have sought direction to the ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition government to conduct the floor test on or before 5 pm on Monday.

July 23, 2019 by Nasheman

It made $9.4 million in India on opening weekend.

The Lion King has smashed through the $500-million milestone in 10 days of release, as it added $460.8 million (about Rs. 3,179 crores) at the worldwide box office over the past weekend. If you take out the Disney film’s earnings in China, where it opened last week, The Lion King remake ($440 million) had the ninth largest global opening of all time, sandwiched between Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($450.8 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($422.5 million). That also makes it the best opening weekend of all time for a computer-animated movie. Unfortunately, box office numbers aren’t usually calculated this way.

Sparing the technicalities, of the $460.8 million grossed by The Lion King this weekend, $191.8 million (about Rs. 1,323 crores) came from its home market of the US, while the rest $269 million (about Rs. 1,856 crores) was contributed by all international markets. The biggest of them was China ($20.8 million), followed by the UK ($19.9 million), France ($19.6 million), Mexico ($18.7 million), Brazil ($17.9 million), South Korea ($17.7 million), Australia ($17.1 million), Russia ($16.7 million), Germany ($12.3 million), India ($9.4 million), Spain ($8.4 million), and Netherlands ($6 million). The Lion King has yet to release in Hong Kong (July 25), Japan (August 9), and Italy (August 21).

In India, The Lion King remake improved day-on-day after release. It grossed Rs. 13.17 crores (about $1.9 million) on Friday, Rs. 22.8 crores (about $3.3 million) on Saturday, and Rs. 29.22 crores (about $4.2 million) on Sunday, for a weekend total of Rs. 65.19 crores ($9.4 million). Per Disney India, that’s the studio’s third highest opening weekend of all time in the country after Avengers: Endgame ($26.7 million), and Avengers: Infinity War ($18.19 million).

Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Far From Home was the global runner-up to The Lion King this weekend with $58.2 million (about Rs. 401.58 crores). The Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios co-production has now grossed $970.9 million (about Rs. 6,700 crores) globally and should cross the $1-billion milestone by next weekend.

Speaking of the $1-billion milestone, Disney’s previous remake of an animated property — Aladdin — is also nearing that figure, with a current worldwide box office total of $989.1 million (about Rs. 6,824 crores).

In third place this weekend was Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4, which brought in an additional $40.4 million (about Rs. 278.76 crores) to take its global total to $861.2 million (about Rs. 5,942 crores). That makes Toy Story 4 the fifth biggest Pixar movie of all time, behind Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.067 billion), Finding Dory ($1.028 billion), and Finding Nemo ($899.2 million).

Don’t Make Me Scapegoat, All Eyes on Us, Speaker Tells HDK Govt Amid Push for Trust Vote

July 22, 2019 by Nasheman

The fate of the fragile Congress-JDS government in Karnataka will be decided today with a trust vote in the Assembly, even as a new twist to the political saga saw the grand old party assert that the JDS was “ready to sacrifice” for the coalition and they wanted either Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara or DK Shivakumar to be the chief minister. A day before the vote, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy appealed to rebel MLAs to return and “expose” the BJP during the debate in the House, but they ruled out attending the session. Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa exuded confidence that “tomorrow will be the last day of the Kumaraswamy government” and said the chief minister was just trying to buy time.

After the voting on confidence motion did not take place despite two deadlines on July 19 set by Governor Vajubhai Vala, two Independent MLAs, who withdrew support to the Congress-JD(S) government, are going to move the Supreme Court seeking a direction for conducting a floor test forthwith in the state Assembly, their lawyer said.

July 22, 2019 by Nasheman

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, “Impossible. We have never done this before. Tomorrow we may see to it.”

Top Court Refuses Urgent Hearing On Plea Seeking Floor Test In Karnataka

Supreme Court said it may take up the plea tomorrow.
NEW DELHI:

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to urgently list a plea of two Independent Karnataka MLAs seeking holding of floor test forthwith, but said it may consider listing of the petition Tuesday.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, “Impossible. We have never done this before. Tomorrow we may see to it.”

The bench’s remarks came when senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi, appearing for the two legislators — R Shankar and H Nagesh, said he has filed a new petition in the Karnataka matter and seeks its urgent listing.

Mukul Rohatgi said the floor test is being delayed on one pretext or the other.

He said when the Congress-JD(S) coalition can take orders for holding of floor test earlier, then same order can be issued now.

To this the bench said, “We will see tomorrow.”

The two MLAs, who withdrew support to the Congress-JD(S) government in Karnataka, moved the top court seeking a direction for conducting a floor test forthwith in the state Assembly.

They said that the state has plunged into a political crisis after they withdrew their support to the government and 16 lawmakers of the ruling coalition tendered their resignations.

ISRO To Launch Chandrayaan 2 At 2:43 pm Today: Live Updates

Chandrayaan 2 launch: The mission will take nearly two months to complete.SRIHARIKOTA, ANDHRA PRADESH:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will make a second attempt to launch the ambitious moon mission Chandrayaan-2, a week after it was aborted just before lift-off. Chandrayaan-2 will be launched this afternoon at 2.43 pm from Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota. The 20-hour countdown for the launch began Sunday evening at 6.43 pm.

The mission was stopped 56 minutes and 24 seconds before its launch last week, after a technical snag was discovered in the unmanned launch vehicle system. The glitch was with the critical cryogenic stage, the last such stage space vehicles enter just before they are about to launch.

Chandrayaan-2’s success will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to pull off a soft landing on the moon. ISRO’s budget is less than 20 times that of USA’s NASA. The success of the mission would be a giant boost for India’s space plans.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Accepts Navjot Sidhu’s Resignation

July 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Navjot Singh Sidhu had refused to join the new Punjab ministry allocated to him after a state cabinet reshuffle under Captain Amarinder Singh on June 6 stripped him of the local bodies ministry

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Accepts Navjot Sidhu's Resignation

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh accepted Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation today
CHANDIGARH:

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has accepted Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation as state minister and forwarded the letter to the Governor, sources said.

Mr Sidhu had refused to join the new ministry allocated to him after a state cabinet reshuffle on June 6 stripped him of the local bodies ministry.

Mr Sidhu is in New Delhi, and is expected to meet Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after she returns from Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, where she has been taken into custody after she tried to meet the families of those who were killed in a shootout in Sonbhadra between tribals and a village chief.

Mr Sidhu had sent his resignation as Punjab minister to the Chief Minister’s home on Monday.

News that he had resigned from the Punjab cabinet, not now but a month ago, was revealed when the cricketer-turned-politician shared a letter he had submitted to Rahul Gandhi on June 10. The 55-year-old leader had met Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi after he lost key portfolios in a cabinet shuffle following his public spat with Amarinder Singh.

The Chief Minister reshuffled the state cabinet in the first meeting after national elections on June 6. He took away the Local Government portfolio from Mr Sidhu and assigned him Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources. Mr Sidhu’s other portfolio of Tourism and Cultural Affairs was also taken away.

On the Congress’s national election tally in Punjab – eight out of 13 – Amarinder Singh said the party failed to do well in urban areas because Mr Sidhu had handled his portfolio poorly. “We have 17 ministers. I changed the portfolio of 13 ministers including Sidhu. I was told he has sent his resignation,” said the Chief Minister.

The feud escalated when Mr Sidhu went on Facebook live soon after the cabinet meet and said: “I cannot be taken for granted…I have been singled out in spite of collective responsibility.”

Congress Orders Dinner For BJP “Friends” On Karnataka Protest Sleepover

Karnataka Crisis: Visuals showed the lawmakers having dinner and then settling down for the night in more casual clothes.

Congress Orders Dinner For BJP 'Friends' On Karnataka Protest Sleepover

BENGALURU:

Karnataka BJP lawmakers had dinner in the assembly and slept on its green carpeted floor at the end of a dramatic day at the Vidhana Souda on Thursday. The BJP was protesting what it called the Congress-Janta Dal Secular coalition’s refusal to take a trust vote at the earliest. Despite the political stand-off, political Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara of the Congress arranged food for his BJP colleagues.

“It is our duty to arrange food and other things for them. Some of them have diabetes and blood pressure conditions. So, we have arranged everything for them here. Beyond politics we’re friends, it is the beauty of democracy,” Mr Parameshwara was quoted as telling news agency ANI.

Visuals showed the lawmakers having dinner and then settling down for the night in more casual clothes. Some were seen with bed clothes and pillows delivered from their homes.

Photos showed Karnataka BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa sleeping in what appeared to be the centre of the house.

“This government has lost the majority. They tried to drag on the issue and tried to provoke us but we acted with patience. We will continue to press for a trust vote on the motion. We will stage night-long dharna in the House,” Mr Yeddyurappa had earlier told NDTV.

Many lawmakers slept in the Well of the House and on the passage leading to the centre.

This morning, some of the BJP legislators were seen taking a morning walk in the assembly premises.

On the BJP’s complaint, Governor Vajubhai Vala yesterday wrote to Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and asked him to prove his majority by 1.30 pm on Friday.

HD Kumaraswamy Will Make His Farewell Speech Today: BS Yeddyurappa

July 19, 2019 by Nasheman

As many as 16 MLAs — 13 from Congress and three from JDS — had resigned, while independent MLAs R Shankar and H Nagesh have withdrawn their support to the government, putting it on the edge.

HD Kumaraswamy Will Make His Farewell Speech Today: BS Yeddyurappa

BENGALURU:

With the Karnataka Governor asking Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to prove majority in the Assembly by Friday afternoon, state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa predicted the end of the coalition government and said his party will decide on the future course of action after consulting the national leadership.

Governor Vajubhai Vala had asked the Chief Minister to prove his majority in the Assembly before 1.30 pm on Friday. “Mostly today will be the end of Congress-JDS government”s misrule… the Chief Minister will make his farewell speech today, we will patiently hear it,” Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

“Depending on the outcome of the proceedings in the House today, we will discuss with our national president Amit Shah and decide on the future course of action,” he added.

This Friday will mark a good day for the BJP in Karnataka, Yeddyurappa said adding “I”m confident that with God’s grace, everything will be good.”

Mr Yeddyurappa, who is Leader of the Opposition, along with the party MLAs stay put in the Assembly last night, protesting the delay in the trust vote.

Accusing the ruling coalition and the Assembly Speaker of trying to delay the trust vote despite fixing a time, the BJP leader said “they tried to instigate us on Thursday but we remained silent, we will continue to do the same thing on Friday also.”

A new political showdown loomed in Karnataka as the governor Thursday night set a timeline and asked Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to prove his majority before 1.30 pm Friday, hours after a trust vote could not take place with the Speaker adjourning the day”s proceedings in the assembly.

Shortly after the Assembly rocked by bedlam was adjourned on Thursday, Vala had shot off a letter to Kumaraswamy, saying resignation of 15 ruling combine MLAs and withdrawal of support by two independents “prima facie” indicated he has lost the confidence of the House.

The trial of strength is taking place after the Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that the 15 rebel Congress-JDS MLAs “ought not” to be compelled to participate in the proceedings of the ongoing session of the state Assembly.

As many as 16 MLAs — 13 from Congress and three from JDS — had resigned, while independent MLAs R Shankar and H Nagesh have withdrawn their support to the government, putting it on the edge.

Congress member Ramalinga Reddy retracted, saying he would support the government.

The ruling combine”s strength is 117– Congress 78, JD(S) 37, BSP 1, and nominated 1, besides the Speaker.

With the support of the two independents, the opposition BJP has 107 MLAs in the 225-member House, including the nominated MLA and Speaker.

If the resignations of 15 MLAs (12 from Congress, 3 from JDS) are accepted, the ruling coalition”s tally will plummet to 101, (excluding the Speaker) reducing the government to a minority.

This is the third motion on trust vote after the 2018 assembly polls yielded a fractured mandate with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats but failing to mobilise numbers.

Mr Yeddyurappa had resigned as CM after being in office for three days before facing the trust vote in May last year. HD Kumaraswamy who succeeded him had won the trust vote after forming the coalition government.

Adding to the worries of the ruling coalition, another Congress MLA Shreemant Patil was not seen in the House on Thursday, in the midst of reports he has been admitted in a Mumbai hospital.COMMENT

BSP MLA Mahesh, on whose support the coalition was counting, also did not show up, amid reports he was keeping away as he has not received any directions from the party leader Mayawati on the stand to be taken on the trust vote.
