Fresh faces in the Karnataka cabinet

August 22, 2019 by Nasheman

Three-time MLA from Malleswaram, Dr Ashwathnarayan is a doctor, politician and is also vocal in his concern for environmental issues.

Dr Ashwathnarayan (L), Prabhu Chauhan (C) and Kota Srinivas Poojary (R)

Doc-turned ‘accessible’ 3-time MLA

Three-time MLA from Malleswaram, Dr Ashwathnarayan is a doctor, politician and is also vocal in his concern for environmental issues. Soon after he took oath as minister on Tuesday at Raj Bhavan, he appealed to his followers to plant a sapling instead of handing out  flower bouquets and other gifts. “That would be the best gift to mother nature and me.’’

Known as the ‘accessible man of Malleswaram’, Dr Ashwathn arayan is the only MLA from Bengaluru who has not held a ministerial portfolio. Having carried out several pro-people initiatives, voters in his constituency remember him as the ‘phone call away MLA’. Be it street light issues, garbage issues or any other major issue, he makes sure to solve them.

He also served as Senate Member of Bangalore University, Syndicate and Senate Member of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Employees Association. He studied in Bengaluru and did his MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru.  This doctor-turned-politician also served as president of Junior Doctor’s association.

Prabhu Chauhan, 50, who hails from Bonthi Thanda of Aurad taluk, Bidar, told TNIE that he spent most of his life in Mumbai involved in the scrap business. He somehow managed to get into politics in Mumbai, and was a close follower of late Maharashtra CM Gopinath Munde. It is said that Munde sent Chauhan to Aurad, and former MLA Gundappa Vakil introduced Chauhan to B S Yediyurappa in 1999.

He got elected as MLA not only in the 2008 Assembly elections, but also in 2013 and 2018. Chauhan is the only MLA who got elected on a BJP ticket in 2018 from Bidar.Chauhan is currently inspecting flood-hit districts in Raichur. My seniority, commitment to the party and to the welfare of the people are the main reasons behind me getting a berth,” he told TNIE over the phone.Chauhan said that the immediate task before him is to develop Bidar, especially Aurad taluk, and all other works “entrusted to him by the chief minister.”

MLC and now minister in the state cabinet – Kota Srinivas Poojary was born on January 1, 1960 to Annappa Poojary and Lacchi Poojary, from Kota Thattu village in Udupi district. He didn’t have a political background, but his ‘fight for justice’ attitude has landed him in his present elevated position. Hailing from the Billava community, Poojary had discontinued his education due to poverty.

However, he his honed his skills and has written several columns on the panchayat raj system and the three-tier local governance for a Kannada daily.

His political journey started when he became a member of Kota gram panchayat in 1993. He became Udupi taluk panchayat member in 1996. He tasted defeat at the hands of K Jayaprakash Hegde when he contested as a BJP candidate in 1999 and 2004 in the state assembly election from erstwhile Brahmavara constituency. He was Inland Water Transport minister in 2012. He was re-elected as an MLC in 2015, and became the leader of opposition in the legislative council in 2018.

Justice MN Venkatachaliah says Mediation should become new mantra for lawyers & stressed on tech intervention at Legal Leadership Conclave

Mediation should become new mantra among lawyers: Justice M.N. Venkatachalaiah

Speaking at Legal Leadership Conclave, he said there was a loss of Rs 2 lakh crore per year as legal cases drag on and called for technological intervention.

Bengaluru: Mediation should become the new mantra among lawyers before it escalates to any level, opined Justice M.N. Venkatachalaiah, former Chief Justice of India.

Speaking at the inauguration of the one-day Legal Leadership Conclave on “Challenges and Future of Arbitration and Mediation in India,” organised by India Legal Research Foundation, Justice Venkatachalaiah said with increasing number of litigants and cases, it was high time the country accepted and adopted mediation and arbitration as a formal legal route.

“We have 34 million pending cases across the country. Of the 22,000 subordinate courts in the country, there are a minimum of 120 litigants and 120 Lawyer’s plus witnesses who visit these courts everyday. Most of the time, they go back empty handed as their matters are delayed. This is a precious loss of man hours and we should not allow it to come to such a stage.”

Pegging such delays in economic terms, the justice said there would be a notional loss of Rs 2 lakh crore per year due to such delays. “Even if a reasonable amount of Rs 200 was spent by every person, the amount of money wasted in prolonged litigation and court visits is enormous,” he pointed out.

Justice Venkatachalaiah said the judiciary should adopt new tools and technology that will speed up the process and mitigate delays. “Recognising and giving more importance to arbitration and mediation of disputes is one way to reduce pending cases. Appointing more number of judges is not the answer as this also adds to spending,” he said.

The former CJ also said technology should be used to the optimum and even the use of Artificial Intelligence would be a big step. By just spending 5% of this cost in alternative dispute resolution mechanism, the people can benefit enormously. The Prime Minister, Law Minister and other stake holders should own up to this problem. “In days of digital dictatorship and digital divide, mediation is the right way in arbitration,” he added.

Union Minister for Highways, Nitin Gadkari said there was an economic slowdown in infrastructure building, especially in his sector of national highways, as contractors were being affected hugely due to delays in litigation.

Speaking from New Delhi, via a live feed, Shri Gadkari wished the conclave all the best and said time was very important and acknowledged that in many cases of litigations, arbitration was the best way ahead for the country.

Justice B.N. Srikrishna, former Supreme Court judge, who headed a committee and gave recommendations on mediation as a forward looking idea, said even sovereign states should get into bilateral treaties and arbitration before third parties impose anything.

He spoke on “Challenges and Reforms in Indian Arbitration and Mediation System – Way Forward” and said the 2015 Act was very clear as it was recognised as a cut-off-date as far as arbitration of disputes were concerned.

Justice Srikrishna also stressed on the fact that it is better to have institutional arbitration especially with Supreme Court and High Courts supervising such institutions.

“The future challenge is to make effective use of the new law which is a relevant and live substitute for antiquated laws,” he added.

Justice T.S. Thakur, former Chief Justice of India, who moderated the session, said the main challenge was that anyone should be able to access the arbitration mechanism.  “Even a small municipal contractor should have easy access to the arbitration mechanism to settle his dispute.”

He was also of the opinion that India should build an international and domestic arbitration hub.

Justice Alok Aradhe, Karnataka High Court judge and President of the Arbitration Centre said arbitration as a means of redressal featured even in the Upanishads. “It’s a very old system that we need to have. As there is a rapid escalation of trade, Parliament is bringing in Acts. These Acts facilitate quick disposal of commercial matters,” he said while speaking on “Challenges to Arbitral Awards – Commercial Courts and need for training of judges.”

He said State judicial academies should train judges in modern methods of arbitration.

Allies BJP-SAD cut into strongholds in Punjab

August 21, 2019 by Nasheman

While the saffron party demanded more seats in the 2022 assembly elections, Shiromani Akali Dal wants the two-decade old seat sharing agreement to continue.

CHANDIGARH: All is not well between the alliance partners Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab, as both parties have started aggressive membership drives in the state cutting into each other’s strongholds.

While the saffron party demanded more seats in the 2022 assembly elections, Shiromani Akali Dal wants the two-decade old seat sharing agreement to continue.  The saffron party, which has reportedly enrolled 5 lakh new members in a month to its existing 23 lakh members, is eyeing for a bigger share of seats for both the assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Currently, the BJP can contest on 23 seats in Assembly polls out of a total of 117 seats in the state and three seats in the Lok Sabha out of a total of 13 seats.

Meanwhile, senior alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal has 55 lakh members and has also started an aggressive enrolment drive by appointing its sitting MLAs and former ministers as special supervisors to monitor the drive.

The target of the party is to expand its base in urban areas where the saffron party has the base and the assembly segments of the BJP. The saffron party tried to make inroads in the constituencies of the Akali Dal.

Clashes were witnessed between workers of both parties in Malwa region of the state last month.  Former Minister and SAD spokesman Daljeet Singh Cheema said that one should not disturb the decorum of the alliance and called for maturity so that the understating in both parties is maintained.

He said that the assembly elections are two and half years ahead and thus no statements should be made. Recently, Punjab BJP president Shwait Malik had hinted at the party expecting a bigger share of seats.

Seat-sharing trouble
While the saffron party demanded more seats in the 2022 assembly elections, SAD wants the two-decade old seat sharing agreement to continue. Currently, BJP can contest on 23 seats in assembly polls out of 117 seats and three seats in the Lok Sabha out of a total of 13

Batla HouseBy: Shaheen Raaj
“Batla House Is A Powerful Warfare Saga”

Banner: T-Series, Emmay Entertainment, Bake My Cake Films & above all John Abraham Entertainment

Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Divya Khosla Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Monisha Advani Madhu Bhojwani, Sandeep  Leyzell & above all John AbrahamStar Cast: John Abraham, Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishen, Manish Chaudhari, Rajesh Sharma, Sonam Arora, Sahidur Rahman, Kranti Prakash Jha, Alok Pandey, Faizan Khan, Niranjan Jadhao, Chirag Katrecha, Yatharth Kansal, Utkarsh Rai & even Nora Fatehi

Director: Nikhil Advani

The films based on or inspired from true incidents always have an edge, especially if it is made well. A recent classic example being that of Article 15, loosely inspired from Badaun rape case & Una flogging incident & which became a commercial success. Now Nikkhil Advani attempts to unravel the mystery behind the more than a decade old Batla House encounter in his flick, also titled Batla House.

So the scripted scenario of Batla House reveals the story of an upright cop caught in a sticky situation. The year is 2008. The Indian Mujahideen has conducted a series of blasts across the country. Their latest attack is in the capital city, Delhi, on 13th Sept, 2008. ACP Sanjay Kumar (John Abraham) is having trouble in his marriage with Nandita (Mrunal Thakur). On 19th Sept, 2008, he is informed by his team that the terrorists responsible for this blasts are holed up in a flat in L-18, Batla House in the Okhla locality of the city. Before Sanjay Kumar could reach the site, his junior officer K K (Ravi Kishan) orders the team to engage with the occupants of the said house. The occupants who are Okhla University students fire at the cops, injuring K K grievously. Sanjay Kumar meanwhile reaches on the spot & he along with the rest of the police team eliminate the shooters. One of them, Tufail (Alok Pandey) is arrested. Even before the cops could leave, the residents begin raising slogans against the police. Soon, the media & even the political leaders blame the police for staging a fake encounter. K K on the other hand passes away in hospital. Sanjay Kumar meanwhile finds it difficult to prove that he’s right & that these residents of Batla House were indeed a part of Indian Mujahideen. He also informs the police department that there were 2 more guys in the Batla House flat who escaped, one of which is Dilshaad Ahmed (Sahidur Rehman). He escaped to Nizampur, Uttar Pradesh. Sanjay Kumar’s senior Jayvir (Manish Chaudhari) sternly tells Sanjay Kumar not to head to Nimzapur to arrest Dilshaad. Yet, Sanjay defies the orders and heads to nab Dilshaad with his team. In Nizampur, he encounters hostile residents & a leader of a political party who tell him to back off. Yet, Sanjay Kumar goes ahead & attempts to take Dilshaad back to Delhi. The locals on one hand are baying for his blood. On other hand, Jayvir & other senior cops are slamming Sanjay Kumar for his irresponsible action. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Ritesh Shah’s story is well researched & gripping. Moreover, it’s extremely relevant in today’s times. Many might not be aware of this case & how it led to such a huge controversy at that time. Hence, the novelty factor is also there. Ritesh Shah’s screenplay is captivating for most of the parts but is shaky in the 1st ever half. The film should have been simpler yet thrilling & devoid of too much of docu drama feel, for a better impact. However, there’s no doubt that some scenes are exceptionally scripted. Ritesh Shah’s dialogues are acidic & sharp. The one liners in the climax also work very well.

Nikkhil Advani’s direction is simply brilliant. He understands the material he has in his hand & its sensitive nature. He has even handled some scenes deftly & shows his brilliance in the interrogation scene in the 1st ever half & later in the courtroom sequences. Also, the Rashomon effect works well here to make the audiences wonder as to which version is correct. However, a few scenes in the 1st ever half are not up to the mark. Some scenes might even confuse the viewers. For instance, it is bewildering why Sanjay Kumar switches off the camera during a crucial interrogation. Thankfully, the plusses outweigh the minuses by a huge margin here.

Batla House’s 1st ever half is decent but one misses the overall “Wow” factor here. The reason behind the straining of relations between Sanjay Kumar & Nandita is not explained properly. The encounter is only partly shown & hence, one remains confused as to what exactly transpired between the police & the students. Also, Sanjay Kumar’s constant hallucination sequences become a little too much after a point. But on the positive side, a few scenes are quite promising. The film picks up in a big way when Sanjay Kumar quotes from the Holy Quran while interrogating Tufail. This powerful scene will surely be greeted with claps & whistles & it also proves how vested interests smartly misinterpret religious texts for violent gains. The Nizampur episode is a bit over the top but is quite thrilling. The intermission point also comes at a great moment. Post interval, the interest levels increase as Sanjay Kumar gets determined to nab Dilshaad. The entry of Victoria (Nora Fatehi) adds charm to the film. But the best is reserved for the last 35 to 40 minutes. The courtroom drama is quite exhilarating & even claps worthy. Also, once the entire scenario becomes clear, the film becomes simpler.  As a result, audiences would be even more interested once they know the complete picture. Sanjay Kumar’s monologue at this hour ensures the film ends on a high.

Songs aren’t memorable except of course “O Saki Saki”. The item song is quite entertaining but it starts off quite suddenly though. “Rula Diya’” & “Jaako Rakhe” are okay. John Stewart Eduri’s background score is subtle yet adds to the impact.  Adil Shaikh’s choreography in “O Saki Saki” is visually great.

Soumik Mukherjee’s cinematography is topnotch. This is especially in the interior scenes of Batla House flat & even in the chase sequence in the small town. Priya Suhas’s production design is quite realistic. Amin Khatib’s action is thrilling & yet not gory or disturbing at all. Maahir Zaveri’s editing is razor sharp in many scenes & also stylish. But this kind of editing also affects the impact in some of the scenes in the 1st ever half.

Performance wise Batla House belongs to John Abraham, without a shred of doubt. He is not just playing a brave, decorated police officer. He also essays the role of a person who is abused & slammed from all quarters. No one wants to know or believe his version of truth. The trauma he faces is brought out beautifully by John Abraham. Also, he’s 1st rate as expected in action scenes & also in dramatic & even the confrontational sequences. Mrunal Thakur is letdown a bit by the script as the back story is never revealed. But she gives a decent performance. In the 2nd half, she impresses even more as the woman who stands up for her husband. Ravi Kishan leaves a huge mark in a small role. Manish Chaudhari is efficient. Rajesh Sharma as advocate Shailesh Arya is quite scathing, as per his character’s requirement. Nora Fatehi provides the much needed sizzle in the film. Her character has a small but important role in the film. Alok Pandey, Sahidur Rehman & even Faizan Khan play their respective parts with earnest. Pramod Pathak as the defense counsel P Krishnan has a late entry but makes an impact. Others also do well.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Batla House is a powerful warfare saga which is sure to spark off discussions & debates. The relevant plot, the watertight screenplay, the clap worthy moments & the terrific performance by John Abraham makes Batla House as one of the finest films of the year.

At the box office turnstiles, Batla  House  will have a promising run. Strictly Recommended!

“Mission Mangal Is Engaging, Entertaining & Even Patriotic”

Producer: Aruna Bhatia & Anil Naidu

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi sinha, Tapsee Pannu, Nitya Menon, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhaari, H G Dattatreya, Sanjay Kapoor, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Dalip Tahil, Vikram Gokhale, Mohan Kapoor & Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub

Music: Amit Trivedi

Just like how Ramzan Eid is synonymous with a Salman Khan release, the Independence Day holiday isn’t complete without an Akshay Kumar starrer. From the year 2013 to the rear 2018, he has had a release during this beneficial weekend, barring the year of 2014. So even the ongoing year of 2019 is no exception & this time, he is out with a new titled Mission Mangal, based on an important chapter of India’s history. The mood of the film is also apt, considering that just last month, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched Chandrayaan 2 towards the moon. Mission Mangal has all the trappings of a blockbuster. So the scripted scenario of Mission Mangal reveals the incredible true story behind India’s mission to Mars. The film begins in the year 2010. At the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a space mission under Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) fails after Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) in his team makes an error in judgement. As a punishment posting, he’s asked to handle India’s Mars program, which is not expected to take off anytime soon. A few days later, Tara Shinde while cooking puris in her home Tara Shinde has a Eureka moment. She realizes that through innovative methods, they can try to get our satellite reach Mars in just 2 years. She tells Rakesh Dhawan about the plan & he realizes that it’s a golden opportunity. Rakesh Dhawan now approaches his senior (Vikram Gokhale) for approval who finds the idea unfeasible. Also Rupert Desai (Dalip Tahil) who has come from NASA to join the organization named Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) feels that Rakesh Dhawan’s idea is ridiculous. But Rakesh Dhawan however manages to persuade everyone & begins work. He asks for the best of the men from Indian Space Organization (ISRO) for this project. However he’s given inexperienced colleagues like Kritika Aggarwal (Taapsee Pannu), Eka Gandhi (Sonakshi Sinha), Varsha Gowda (Nithya Menen), Neha Siddiqui (Kirti Kulhari) & even Parmeshwar Naidu (Sharman Joshi) & a very senior employee Ananth Iyer (H G Dattatreya). What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Jagan Shakti’s story is superb & also very challenging. It’s not easy to pen down a mainstream film with such a plot. Also many are not aware of what transpired behind the making of India’s Mars mission. Hence it’ll be exciting for them to witness the whole journey. Also there are so many twists & turns in the plot that one might not believe that some of the plot points are actually true incidents. R Balki, Jagan Shakti, Nidhi Singh Dharma & Saketh Kondipathi’s screenplay not only simplifies the proceedings but also makes it massy. The screenplay blends science & entertainment seamlessly. The film’s goings on are extremely easy to comprehend. R Balki, Jagan Shakti, Nidhi Singh Dharma & Saketh Kondipathi’s dialogues are effective & funny too.

Jagan Shakti’s direction is terrific for a 1st ever timer. He had a winning screenplay in his hand & he takes it to another level with his directional execution. The film also has subplots of each of the main characters & even these are very well woven in the narrative. And through these tracks too, the makers have made some important comments about religion, parenting, marriage, religious bias et al & all these contribute to the film hugely.

Mission Mangal starts off beautifully showing Tara Shinde running a house efficiently on the day Indian Space Research (ISRO) has an important launch. Rakesh Dhawan’s entry & the confrontation scene when he’s offered Mars program is intriguing as well as entertaining. It also makes it clear that the film won’t get serious & that the entertainment quotient will be maintained. The rest of the team is introduced in a quick but interesting montage like sequences & it adds a lot to the film. The 1st ever half moves swiftly with no complaints. The 2nd half is longer & the commencing portions are where the film drops. Also to see the team renovating their work station at a time when they are running against time is a bit too much. Thankfully the film soon picks up. The best is obviously reserved for the grand finale. There are a lot of obstacles faced by the team here & it makes the film even more gripping. So the grand finale is applause worthy.

Amit Trivedi’s music is well interspersed with the proceedings. “Dil Mein Mars Hai’ is entertaining & catchy. “Shaabaashiyaan”is played at a crucial juncture. Amit Trivedi’s background score is engaging.

S Ravi Varman’s cinematography is quite simple & has the big screen effect. Sandeep Ravade’s production design is praiseworthy as it’s straight out of life. Debashish Mishra’s sound design is also as real as it gets. Sham Kaushal’s action is good in the lone action scene inside the metro. Famulus Media & Entertainment’s VFX is top class without which the long climax would not have worked so well. Theia Tekchandaney’s costumes are appealing yet not too glamorous. Kirti Kolwankar & Maria Tharakan’s costumes for Vidya Balan are authentic. Chandan Arora’s editing is just perfect as the film neither moves too fast nor drags.

Mission Mangal is embellished with some fine performances. So performance wise the main actor Akshay Kumar is in top form. He gets to play such a splendid role & also gets into the skin of his character. And he’s very much there throughout the film! The way his character rarely gets serious & makes even serious discussions light & funny too, is seen to be believed. One of the greatest sequences of the film is when he makes an imaginary call to none other than the great man APJ Abdul Kalam. Vidya Balan dominates most of the 1st ever half & suits her character to the T. It’s also admirable that she has no qualms playing mother to teenagers. Sonakshi Sinha is lovely & gets to shine. It’s great to see how she makes an impact in a supporting role. Taapsee Pannu is also quite efficient & gives off her best in the climax scene. Nithya Menen has a smaller role but it serves as a great debut. Kirti Kulhari manages to score & many would be able to relate to her character’s struggles. Sharman Joshi is funny & would surely make viewers smile. H G Dattatreya is adorable & the scene where he teaches Kirti Kulhari’s ex-hubby a lesson is too good! Dalip Tahil is appropriate as the pessimist guy. Sanjay Kapoor as Sunil Shinde is the main surprise of the film. He delivers a fine performance & post interval he goes in another mode that would be greeted with whistles in cinemas! Purab Kohli as Vivek & Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Rishi lend able support. Rohan Joshi as Dilip Shinde is hilarious & even heartening as Vidya Balan’s son. Kashmira Pardeshi as Anya Shinde gets no scope. Vikram Gokhale is decent. Others are also good in their respective parts.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Mission Mangal is engaging & entertaining while being patriotic in its feel.

At the box office turnstiles, it will be accepted whole heartedly by the audiences & even has the potential to emerge as Akshay Kumar’s highest money spinner ever!

Virat Kohli and boys enjoy beach party ahead of first Test against West Indies

August 21, 2019 by Nasheman

The photo had the likes of Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Team India were in a relaxing mood ahead of the first Test match against the West Indies at Antigua. Kohli shared an image of him enjoying a beach party with teammates and support staff at Jolly Beach, Antigua.

“Stunning day at the beach with the boys” the caption read in his Instagram post. The photo had the likes of Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.

Excited about playing in the inaugural World Test Championship, Indian captain Virat Kohli says the competition in the traditional format has “gone up two-fold” in recent years.

“The games are going to be much more competitive and it brings a lot of purpose to the Test matches you play. It’s the right move and at the absolute right time,” he said during the West Indies Players Association awards night on Monday.

“I don’t think us batsmen have lived up to the standard,” he said, stressing on the importance of the batting coming together as a team, rather than individuals doing well.

“Batsmanship will always be hard at the Test level, but even harder now with the Championship where every decision you make counts in the larger scheme of things,” added Kohli.

India will sport the Test whites along with players’ names and numbers for the first time when they take on West Indies on Thursday. Having already won the T20I and ODI series, India will look to wrap up a successful tour of the Caribbean with a victory in the Test series.

Platelet donors in Bengaluru ‘a call away’ for dengue patients

August 21, 2019 by Nasheman

As per the city’s Public Health Department, over 5,000 people are diagnosed with dengue.

Blood donation

BENGALURU: With the onset of monsoon, there has been a sharp increase in the number of dengue cases in the city. As per the city’s Public Health Department, over 5,000 people are diagnosed with dengue.

Some of the patients’ families were even struggling to find platelets in blood banks or even hospitals. However, India’s first platelet donor line has come up, which is an initiative by Godrej HIT. The platelet donor helpline in Bengaluru has 1.25 lakh donors.

On receiving requests, registered donors are updated through calls and SMS. The platelet donor visits the patient directly at any hospital where s/he is admitted or the platelets are sent to the patient. They can also avail platelet transfusion at the nearest Apollo Hospital.

Sunil Kataria, CEO – India & SAARC, Godrej Consumer Products Limited, said, “Platelet donor helpline is India’s unique platform bringing donors and dengue patients together to help each other crowdsource platelets. It helps patients get platelets, which cannot be stored. We are happy to see that over the last one year, more than 1 lakh people have registered to be platelet donors, resulting in eight lives being saved. We consider it our responsibility to create mass awareness around how platelets are crucial during dengue and encourage more platelet donations.”

Chidambaram fails to get immediate relief in SC, case to be put before CJI

August 21, 2019 by Nasheman

Justice N V Ramana told senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, that the case will be put before the CJI.

Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: A day after Delhi High Court dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of former Union Minister P Chidambaram, he approached the Supreme Court on Wednesday but got no immediate relief and was told that Chief Justice of India will take decision on listing of the case before appropriate bench.

Battery of senior lawyers led by Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid, Vivek Tankha and Ashwani Kumar urged the bench headed by Justice Ramana to hear the case, but the judges said that they can’t pass immediate orders and is sending the file to CJI Ranjan Gogoi for necessary directions in the case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for CBI opposed Chidambaram’s plea.

Sibal then rushed to CJI’s court but since the constitution bench which was hearing the Ayodhya land dispute was sitting, he chose not to mention the case.

So, it is still not clear whether Chidambaram’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court’s order in the INX media case will be heard by Supreme Court today or not. It is likely that CJI will take a call on the listing of the plea during lunch hours.

In his 67 page petition, Chidambaram questioned the move by CBI of pasting the notice on his house late at night and asking him to join probe at such an odd hour and said, “CBI has just called me once in the investigation of the case and I went and answered all questions and was never called again, so what is the motive of putting up such a notice.”

Chidambaram has maintained he isn’t a flight risk, haven’t been accused of influencing witnesses of tampering with the Evidence.

Delhi High Court while rejecting Chidambaram’s interim bail had said, “Facts prima facie reveal that he is the kingpin, the key conspirator, in the case.”

The court also observed that the magnitude and enormity of material brought forth by investigating agencies clearly does not entitle him any pre-arrest bail.

The court said the economic offence of this magnitude certainly requires treatment with an iron hand and the hands of the investigating agencies cannot be tied up in such a massive economic offence.

* In a significant milestone for India’s Moon Mission,Chandrayaan-2 successfully entered the lunar orbit after nearly 30 days of journey in space.
* ISRO in a statement said,Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver was completed successfully today (August 20, 2019) at 0902 hrs IST as planned, using the onboard propulsion system. The duration of maneuver was 1738 seconds. With this, Chandrayaan-2 was successfully inserted into a Lunar orbit. The orbit achieved is 114 km x 18072 km.
* The Vikram lander of the Chandrayaan 2 is scheduled to detach from the Orbiter on September 2 and will initiate the touchdown procession on September 7.
* On September 3,a small 3-second manoeuvre will be performed to check whether all systems of the Lander module are working well on not.
* The Vikram lander will perform orbital descent from September 2 to September 7 before entering into the final descent phase.
* During the orbital descent, the Lander will examine and click pictures of the lunar surface to identify a flat and hazard-free landing zone. The polar region of the Moon is populated with craters and any mistake could lead to loss of the lander module.
* On September 7,the Vikram-lander will perform descent towards the Moon’s surface. It will begin at 0140 hours IST and will end at 0155 hours IST with the touchdown of Vikram lande.
* This process is termed as Powered Descent and requires extreme accuracy, skill and precision.
* In the final phase of the lunar landing, the Vikram lander which has a weight of 1471 kg will perform a descent at a touchdown velocity of 2 meters per second. Any minute mistake can lead to the failure of the mission.
* The final soft landing window is expected to be a 15-minute long process. The process will include a series of rough braking and fine braking manoeuvres to safely land the lander and Pragyan rover on the Moon’s surface.
* The braking has to be managed very precisely as any mistake can result is the crash landing of Vikram.During this process, ISRO scientists will have to take care of factors like navigation, guidance, controls, propulsion, sensors among other operational constraints.
* After the landing has been successfully performed, the rover module Pragyan will roll out.The rover is mounted inside the lander.
* The rover will roll out at around 0600 hours IST. It will roll out on the lunar surface after a gap of four hours of a successful landing.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated ISRO for Chandrayaan-2 successfully entering the lunar orbit, saying it is an important step in the landmark journey to the Moon”.

Congratulations to Team @isro on  #Chandrayaan2 entering the Moon’s orbit. This is an important step in the landmark journey to the Moon.Best wishes for its successful culmination PM Modi tweeted.
“Our heart was almost stopping”, was how ISRO Chairman Dr.K Sivan described the tense moment when team Chadrayaan-2 attempted to inject the spacecraft into the lunar orbit on Tuesday.

India’s moonshot Chandrayaan 2 has been successfully manoeuvred into lunar orbit today, after nearly 30 days of space travel. This was one of the trickiest operations in the mission.A higher-than-expected approach velocity would have bounced off the spacecraft into deep space, while a slow approach would have led to the moon’s gravity to pull Chandrayaan 2 and crash it on the lunar surface. The approach velocity had to be just right and the altitude over the moon rather precise.Even a small error would have killed the mission. The process of setting down Chandrayaan 2 on the moon is very complex since it blasted off at a velocity of 39,240 kilometres per hour, which is almost 30 times the speed at which sound travels through air.India’s most ambitious space mission to date, Chandrayaan 2 had lifted off from India’s spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on July 22.Congratulations to Team @isro on  #Chandrayaan2 entering the Moon’s orbit. This is an important step in the landmark journey to the Moon.
Almost a month after its lift-off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft has entered the lunar orbit. The spacecraft will now revolve around the moon and will start the landing of the Vikram lander on the surface on September 7 around 1.40 AM IST. It is expected to take 15 minutes for Vikram to land on the surface of the moon. The spacecraft has been injected into an elliptical orbit which is 114 km away from the moon’s surface at its nearest point and 18,072 Km at its furthest.
Today, the Chandrayaan-2 missioncrossed a major milestone. The lunar orbit insertion manoeuvre carried out at about 9 am,for about 30 minutes, precisely injected Chandrayaan-2 in a pre-defined orbit (around the moon),in a perfect way.All the systems onboard are functioning normally. The spacecraft is in perfect health, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman Dream.K Sivan said.
In the coming days, the spacecraft will attain a near-circular orbit of 100 km around the moon.At this point, the Vikram lander and along with the small Pragyaan rover will separate from the main module and descent towards the moon’s surface. The separation is scheduled for September 4.
Sivan said that since Vikram will land at the South Pole of the moon,Chandrayaan-2 is needed to attain an orbit that has an inclination of 90 degrees with respect to the lunar equator. This is a unique requirement that only Chandryaan-2 has  other countries that have landed (their spacecraft all in the equatorial regions of the moon) did not have this constraint. With today’s manoeuvre,Chandrayaan-2 is now going around the moon in an orbit of 114 km x 18072 km with an inclination of 88 degrees. In due course, this orbit would be brought down to 100km x 100km, and further to 100km x 30km. At that time, the inclination of the orbit would also be 90 degrees,” he said.
In a significant milestone for India’s Moon mission, the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft successfully entered the lunar orbit on Tuesday.
Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) manoeuvre was completed successfully at 0902 hours as planned, using the onboard propulsion system, the Bengaluru headquartered space agency said in a statement.
The duration of the manoeuvre was 1,738 seconds. With this,Chandrayaan-2 was successfully inserted into a Lunar orbit,ISRO said.
Following this,a series of orbit manoeuvres will be performed on Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft to enable it to enter its final orbit passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the Moon’s surface,it said.
Subsequently, the lander will separate from the Orbiter and enter within a 100 km X 30 km orbit around the Moon.
Then, it will perform a series of complex braking manoeuvres to soft-land in the South polar region of the Moon on September seven, ISRO stated.
The health of the spacecraft is continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru.
The next Lunar bound orbit manoeuvre is scheduled on Wednesday between 12.30 PM and 1.30 PM, ISRO said.
Chandrayaan-2,launched on July 22 by GSLV MkIII-M1 vehicle, had entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory on August 14.
According to ISRO,Chandrayaan 2, India’s second lunar expedition – will shed light on a completely unexplored section of the Moon it’s South Polar region.
“This mission will help us gain a better understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon by conducting detailed topographical studies, comprehensive mineralogical analyses, and a host of other experiments on the lunar surfac the space agency had said.
“Will also explore discoveries made by Chandrayaan 1,such as the presence of water molecules on the Moon and new rock types with the unique chemical composition, it was stated.
The lift-off was successful in its second attempt,a week after it was aborted just under an hour from its launch due to a technical glitch. The mission stands out because of its low cost, with just about Rs.1,000 crore spent a much smaller price tag compared to similar missions by other countries.
“Chandrayaan 2 landing on Moon: Step-by-step guide to ‘terrifying’ process:
AUGUST 21st:
On August 21, Chandrayaan-2 will perform a manoeuvre to lower its orbit around the Moon. Between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm, the Chandrayaan-2’s onboard propulsion system will be used to descend slightly towards the Moon. Once the manoeuvre is successfully completed, Chandrayaan-2 will be in an elliptical orbit of 121 kms x 4303 kms the probe will be 121 kms away from the Moon at the orbit’s nearest point and 4,303 kms away at its farthest point.
AUGUST 28th:
A week after the first orbit manoeuvre, Chandrayaan-2 will perform another similar manoeuvre. This manoeuvre will be performed between 5:30 am and 6:30 am on August 28 and will place the spacecraft into an elliptical orbit of 178 kms x 1,411 kms around the Moon.
AUGUST 30:
On August 30,Chandrayaan-2 will perform its penultimate orbit manoeuvre around the Moon. This manoeuvre will be performed between 6 pm and 7 pm. Once the August 30 manoeuvre is completed successfully, Chandrayaan-2 will be in an elliptical orbit of 126 kms x 164 kms.
SEPTEMBER 1:
By the night of September 1, Chandrayaan-2 will be closest to the Moon. Between 6 pm and 7 pm, an orbit manoeuvre will bring Chandrayaan-2 into a near-circular orbit around the Moon. At the closest point, Chandrayaan-2 will be 114 kms away from the lunar surface while at the farthest point it will be 128 kms away from the Moon.
SEPTEMBER 2 “
September 2 is the D-Day for the Chandrayaan-2 mission. On this day, the lander Vikram will separate from the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft and get into an orbit of its own around the Moon. The lander Vikram houses the six-wheeled rover Pragyaan that will explore the lunar surface.
SEPTEMBER 3
On September 3, Isro will carry out a three-second manoeuvre to check that the lander Vikram is in good health.
SEPTEMBER 4
A day later, the lander Vikram will perform a manoeuvre to lower its orbit around the Moon. Once successful, the manoeuvre will place the lander in an elliptical orbit of 35 kms x 97 kms around the Moon. Over the next three days, the Isro will keep checking the parameters of the lander to make sure that everything is a-okay.
SEPTEMBER 7
1:40 am: On September 7, at 1:40 am, the “15 minutes of terror” for the Isro scientists back home will begin. The lander Vikram will begin its powered descent on to the surface of the Moon. Vikram will be attempting what no other country has been able to successfully to do — perform a ‘soft landing’ near the south pole of the Moon.
1:55 am: After 15 minutes of a powered descent, Vikram will land on the Moon. Vikram will land near the lunar south pole, 71 degrees to south of equator and 22.8 degrees east.
3:55 am: Around two hours after landing, Vikram’s ramp will open, allowing the six-wheeled rover Pragyaan to come out.
5:05 am: Pragyaan will deploy its solar panels, which will use solar energy to power the many systems on board the rover.
5:10 am: Pragyaan will begin moving around on the lunar surface. Its mission life is for one lunar day, which is equivalent to two weeks on Earth.
WHAT IS CHANDRAYAAN-2?.
Chandrayaan-2 is India’s second mission to the Moon. It is a follow-up to the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandryaan-1 mission, which crash-landed an impactor on the surface of the Moon.
One of the Chandrayaan-2’s primary missions is to further the discovery of water made by Chandryaan-1. Chandrayaan-2 and its rover Pragyaan will perform a series of experiments and tests to ascertain the extent of water presence on the Moon.
While Pragyaan will complete its mission in around 14 Earth days, the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter will be in operation for around a year, studying the Moon’s outer atmosphere.
WHAT MAKES CHANDRAYAAN-2 SO SPECIAL?.
With Chandryaan-2, India will become only the fourth country in the world to land a rover on the Moon.Previously, the United States, Russia and China have landed rovers on the Moon.
However, none have done what the Indian Space Research Organisation is attempting to do land near the south pole of the Moon. Israel attempted a ‘soft landing’ near the south pole this year, but the mission failed and the Israeli probe crashed instead.
Chandryaan-2 is also the precursor to the grand Gaganyaan mission, under which Isro will send three Indians to space on an Indian spacecraft. In fact, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III) rocket that was used to launch Chandryaan-2 is the same rocket that will be used to launch the Gaganyaan mission.
