‘My mother was sitting with all of us’: Karan Johar slams MLA’s ‘drug party’ allegations

August 20, 2019 by Nasheman

An MLA alleged Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora, and Vicky Kaushal — were flaunting a ‘drugged look’ in the video.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa claimed that Bollywood stars at Karan Johar's party were under the influence of drugs.

MUMBAI:  Filmmaker Karan Johar has finally broken his silence over allegations of hosting a drug party for a few A-list Bollywood stars last month.

In a recent interview, Karan is furious with the brouhaha around the alleged ‘drug party’, and says all such charges are “baseless and ridiculous”.

It was an “easy night out”, the filmmaker says, adding that his mother was also appalled reading about it.

“I toyed with the idea of giving out a statement. I toyed with giving out thoughts on social media about something… There were achieving members of the industry who were having an easy night out after a hard week of work, having a good time. I took that video with all the earnestness… would I be putting out that video if there was anything happening at all, I am not stupid,” he said in an interview with Rajeev Masand. ADVERTISING

Last month, Karan had posted a video on Instagram of a party he hosted at home. Soon afterwards, Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa shared the video, alleging that top stars who were present at the party — such as Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora, and Vicky Kaushal — were flaunting a “drugged look” in the video. He tagged the video with #UdtaBollywood, taking off on the film “Udta Punjab”, which was about the drug menace in the state of Punjab and which, incidentally, starred Shahid.

Karan has now opened up on how the reflection of a light near Vicky was misconstrued as proof.

“Apparently you are not allowed to scratch your nose. Apparently, you are not allowed to put your phone in your back pocket. Apparently, a shadow of light is perceived to be some kind of powder,” he said, further revealing that Vicky was recovering from dengue and was drinking hot water with lemon.

“Some of us were chatting and some of us were having wine, but that was it. It was a baseless accusation, and it really annoyed me because you are taking away the culture and tradition that I have been raised in. My mother was appalled when she read those things because she was there. Which powder? We are all very committed professionals,” he said.

The filmmaker called it a night out where friends were letting their hair down.

“My mother, five minutes before this video, was sitting with us. It was that kind of a family, happy, social gathering, where friends were sitting and having a good time and we were listening to some music, having some good food and having good conversational energy there. There was nothing else going on,” he said.

“The reason I didn’t put it out was because ‘why do I need to justify a house party which was a casual get together with good friends?’ How dare you grab it away from us? How dare somebody constantly make us soft target? It is ridiculous that someone can start spotting these things,” Karan said.

He also said that his friends, who were present in the video, also found the accusations ridiculous.

“I thought if I justify it will start looking that I am speaking too much in defense.”

While he didn’t react to these accusations, he has decided that he will take a legal action next time.

“I am not taking this very kindly, the next time where baseless accusations, I will take the legal route. You cannot mar our solid reputations, our sincere reputations our committed reputations just because you are presuming something. You cannot put out a baseless accusation that has no base, no fact, no truth, no reality and try and mar us and our reputations, it’s ridiculous.”

The incident, he claimed, has left an impact on his mind.

“I am, now, afraid to call up people to my home thinking that they might be afraid to show up,” he said.

Sanjay Bangar likely to be replaced as India’s batting coach

August 20, 2019 by Nasheman

The senior selection committee, led by MSK Prasad, interviewed more than 10 candidates for the posts of batting and bowling coach.

Sanjay Bangar

CHENNAI: Tuesday is going to be a big day for Sanjay Bangar. Part of the Indian team’s support staff since 2014 in his role as batting coach and then as assistant coach, his future with the national side continues to be under big suspense. The senior selection committee, led by MSK Prasad, interviewed more than 10 candidates for the posts of batting and bowling coach. And it is understood that much of the focus has been on replacing the former Railways stalwart.

When the Committee of Administrators reappointed Ravi Shastri as head coach till 2021, the rest of the support staff were also expected to continue unchanged along with him. But it has been reliably learnt that there will be change of personnel, at least with regards to the batting coach.

On Monday, Pravin Amre, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Amol Muzumdar, Lalchand Rajput, Vikram Rathour and Sitanshu Kotak appeared before the selectors — entrusted with the job of naming the support staff — in person for the batting coach role. Jonathan Trott, another candidate who had expressed his interest in taking up the batting coach role — joined them via Skype.

Bangar, who is currently in Antigua, will appear on Tuesday, alongside bowling coach Bharathi Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar. While Bangar continues to have the backing of captain Virat Kohli, he doesn’t seem to enjoy the same kind of support from Shastri. In fact, reliable sources have indicated that the former India captain wants a new coach. Though he hasn’t recommended anyone for the post, he has apparently shown his preference for an Indian taking up the particular role.

There is a strong feeling that except for Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, the rest of the batsmen have become stagnated beyond a point and struggled to score runs in overseas conditions. It is one area that Shastri now wants to concentrate on, because the ICC Test Championship is now underway. That, and the possible inclusion of youngsters in the limited-over scheme of things.

While domestic stalwart Muzumdar is expected to be a strong contender, Rathour will give him a tough competition for the batting coach role. But, interestingly, most of these candidates were rejected for the batting coach position that is currently lying vacant at National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Questions will be raised as  to how those who were considered misfit for NCA can be deemed eligible for the national side.

While Arun is expected to continue in his role of bowling coach, Venkatesh Prasad, Amit Bhandari, Subroto Banerjee and Paras Mhambrey appeared for the interview.

Battle plan
Pravin Amre, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Amol Muzumdar, Lalchand Rajput, Vikram Rathour, Sitanshu Kotak and Jonathan Trott are some who were interviewed for batting coach. Sources say Ravi Shastri is keen to have an Indian in this role.

High alert in Madhya Pradesh over possible presence of Afghan terrorists

August 20, 2019 by Nasheman

The alert has been sounded in bordering districts of Jhabua, Alirajpur, Dhar, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch and Agar-Malwa.

BHOPAL: High alert pertaining to possible terror activity by four Afghan-origin terrorists in Gujarat and Rajasthan has been sounded in the Western Madhya Pradesh districts bordering the two western states.

The alert has been sounded in bordering districts of Jhabua, Alirajpur, Dhar, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Neemuch and Agar-Malwa.

According to MP police sources, after the high alert was sounded, the police have started heightened checking at least 10 security checkpoints in Ratlam district of MP adjoining Banswara, Jhalawar and Pratapgarh districts of Rajasthan. Identical checks are underway in MP-Rajasthan border in Mandsaur and Neemuch districts of West MP.

Similar checking was conducted at more than 10 inter-state checkpoints of Jhabua and Alirajpur districts that border Dahod and Chota Udaipur districts of Gujarat and three checkpoints in Agar-Malwa district which edges Rajasthan.

The police were also conducting search operations in trains coming from Rajasthan and Gujarat into MP with particular focus on Ratlam railway junction of Western Railway.

Confirming the alert, the Jhabua district police superintendent Vineet Jain said, “Throughout the day, it was the Gujarat police which was carrying out extensive checking at all inter-state border checkpoints. But since the evening, we too have started exhaustive checks at 11 inter-state border points in Jhabua district, particularly on the Pitol checkpoint. A sketch of one of the Afghan origin terrorists has also been rendered to us by the police headquarters, after which copies of the same sketch have been provided to cops in all police stations, outposts and checkpoints in the district.”

Key police sources in one of the MP districts bordering Gujarat confided to The New Indian Express that both Gujarat and Rajasthan have been particularly alerted about possible terror activity by four Afghan origin terrorists who along with an ISI agent could have sneaked into India and might be planning misadventure in the two states and neighbourhood.

One of the four Afghan origin terrorists possibly hails from Kunar province of terror-torn Afghanistan, whose sketches have been shared among cops of the three neighbouring states.

Zakir Naik banned from giving speeches in Malaysia, say reports

August 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Naik is alleged to have made controversial remarks against Malaysian Hindus and Malaysian Chinese during a talk in Kota Baru on August 3, prompting calls for him to be deported to India.

Tele-evangelist Zakir Naik

Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has been banned from giving speeches in Malaysia, local media reports said on Tuesday.

Naik was summoned on Monday for a second time by Malaysian authorities after his alleged racial remarks against Hindus and Chinese, hours after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told the controversial Indian televangelist that he is not allowed to participate in political activities in the country.

The official Bernama news agency reported on Monday that Naik, wanted by Indian authorities since 2016 for alleged money laundering and inciting extremism through hate speeches, has been called for the second time to have his statement recorded at Bukit Aman, The Royal Malaysia Police Headquarters here.

The 53-year-old preacher, who is a permanent resident in Muslim-majority Malaysia, had his statement recorded for the first time on August 16, the report said.

Naik is alleged to have made controversial remarks against Malaysian Hindus and Malaysian Chinese during a talk in Kota Baru on August 3, prompting calls for him to be deported to India.

Responding to calls for his deportation from Malaysia by suggesting Malaysian Chinese should leave the country first as they were “old guests.”

He also said that ethnic Hindus in Malaysia enjoyed “100 times more rights” than Muslims in India and that they believed in the Indian government more than the Malaysian one, media reports said.

Reacting to Naik’s controversial comments, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir on Sunday said it was “quite clear” that Naik wanted to participate in racial politics.

“He is stirring up racial feelings. The police will have to investigate whether it is causing tension; obviously, it is,” he said.

Mahathir added that as a permanent resident, Naik was not allowed to participate in politics.

“You can preach (religiously). But he wasn’t doing that,” he said.

“He was talking about Chinese going back to China and Indians going back to India. I have never said such things. But he did. That is politics,” the annoyed Malaysian prime minister said.

Meanwhile, more Malaysian provinces have banned Naik from making public speeches.

On Monday, Melaka became the latest state to ban his speeches.

Naik has been banned from speaking in Melaka, said the Malaysian state’s Chief Minister Adly Zahari.

Adly said the state government wants to avoid any issue that could strain ties between races, the Star reported on Monday.

“We want to maintain this. So we decided not to allow Mr Naik to hold talks or gatherings here,” he was quoted as saying.

Last week, the northern state of Perlis banned him from speaking at an event, following public uproar over racially insensitive remarks which he had made.

Naik has already been banned from the Malaysian states of Johor, Selangor, Penang, Kedah and Sarawak.
