Former Chief Election Commissioner TN Seshan, man behind India’s electoral reforms, passes away

November 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Seshan has been credited for several electoral reforms including ending malpractices and bringing transparency to the electoral process.

Former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan passed away at his residence in Chennai on Sunday night. Seshan suffered a cardiac arrest, his family said. He was 86.

Born in Palakkad district of Kerala, the 1955-batch IAS officer served as the 10th CEC of India between 1990 and 1996.

Seshan has been credited for several electoral reforms that brought an end to malpractices and brought transparency. His reforms by and large changed the face of Indian elections.

Known for enforcing Model Code of Conduct, Seshan took stern action against any politician who tried to flout its provisions.

He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service in 1996. After retiring as the CEC, he contested to be the President of India in 1997 but lost to KR Narayanan.

Seshan’s successor SY Quraishi took to Twitter to announce the news of his death. “Sad to announce that Shri TN Seshan passed away a short while ago. He was a true legend and a guiding force for all his successors. I pray for peace to his soul, he wrote.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too took to the microblogging site to express his condolences.

“Shri TN Seshan was an outstanding civil servant. He served India with utmost diligence and integrity. His efforts towards electoral reforms have made our democracy stronger and more participative. Pained by his demise. Om Shanti,” Modi wrote.

The cremation is said to be planned on Monday afternoon at Besant Nagar crematorium.

Through Kartarpur Corridor, Pakistan aims to rebuild economy, image

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Before coming to power, Prime Minister Imran Khan often railed at the successive governments of Pakistan for failing to exploit the vast potential of tourism.

ISLAMABAD: For cash-strapped Pakistan, struggling to rebuild its economy and image, the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor is an opportunity to project itself as a moderate nation while earning a tidy sum annually from pilgrims.

Before coming to power, Prime Minister Imran Khan often railed at the successive governments of Pakistan for failing to exploit the vast potential of tourism, including revered religious sites, to attract tourists from around the world.

After assuming last year, among the first things he did was to take steps to attract visitors for sight-seeing and pilgrimage.

Addressing a tourism summit organised by his government here in April, Khan said the God has bestowed Pakistan with diverse kind of landscapes.

“We need to give tourists awareness about the scenic beauty of the country,” Khan said.

He also highlighted religious tourism, especially for the followers of Sikhism, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

In November last year, he performed the historic groundbreaking of the development work for the opening of the Kartarpur shrine for Sikhs in India and rest of the world.

The construction work has been completed in record time on the corridor.

Khan is set to inaugurate it on Saturday, ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, on November 12.

Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said that 10,000 Sikhs will attend the opening ceremony and then every day at least 5,000 Sikhs from India and an equal number from Pakistan and other places be allowed to visit the shrine.

“The opening of the corridor for the Sikh community will open vast opportunities for religious tourism,” he said.

During the last two decades, Pakistan has suffered due to violence and terrorism.

The country’s economy nosedived and it lost its image as a business-friendly country.

Government estimates show that over USD 126 billion were lost by the end of 2018.

As Khan struggles to rebuild the shattered economy and visage of the country, he desperately needs to offer better options to the outside world.

With Sikhs coming to Pakistan in droves, Khan’s dream is getting close to realisation.

The quick development work at Kartarpur despite tensions with India is being appreciated.

The corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Punjab with Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur, just 4 kilometres from the International Border, located at Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

At Darbar Sahib, Guru Nanak had spent the last 18 years of his life.

Notwithstanding a chill in bilateral ties over Kashmir, Pakistan and India after tough negotiations signed a landmark agreement on October 24 to operationalise the corridor to allow Indian pilgrims to visit the holy Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s officials are showcasing Kartarpur as the symbol of religious harmony and representative of the teachings of Islam about showing respect towards non-Muslims.

“We are following the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad regarding the provision of facilities to minorities,” Faisal said.

There seems to be a conscious effort to distance from extremism and terrorism which over the years became synonymous with Pakistan.

By showing the other side of Islam, Khan’s government is trying to build a case to divert pressure that Pakistan was not doing enough to eliminate militancy.

The opening of the corridor may prove handy to wriggle out of the Grey List of the Financial Action Task Force that will meet in February to review Pakistan’s performance on combating terror-financing and money laundering.

As far as the rebuilding of the economy is concerned, religious tourism can directly and indirectly help.

For example, Pakistan decided to levy USD 20 as service charge from every pilgrim coming from India.

Officials are hoping to collect a tidy sum annually that will be handy to support the balance of payment and boost foreign reserves.

Pakistan is expected to earn up to Indian Rs 258 crore per annum — about Pakistani Rs 571 crore — from pilgrims visiting Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur.

Last week, a group of 185 Sikhs were flown to Lahore by Pakistan International Airlines from London to attend the 550 birth anniversary rites of Baba Guru Nanak, indirectly helping the cash-starved national flag-carrier.

As Sikhs flock to Pakistan, Buddhists may not remain far behind.

Last month a group of Buddhist from South Korea visited a stupa in Haripur in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province.

It is believed that after the success of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, Pakistan is also aiming to market Taxila and its vast Buddhist heritage to the followers of Buddhism around the world.

Faisal said tourism is an industry that Pakistan was unable to focus on earlier, however, Khan’s government is making a concerted effort to promote this industry in the country.

“One of the facets of the tourism industry is religious tourism. Sikhs/Nanak NaamLevas (followers), Hindus and Buddhist monks etc have various holy sites in Pakistan and we are trying to tap this potential of religious tourism,” he said.

According to a report, 1.75 million tourists visited Pakistan in 2017.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Pakistan’s economy was USD 20,098.9 million in 2019.

Faisal said many initiatives under religious tourism were currently in the pipeline and a great deal of effort was being put in for their fruition.

“The promotion of such initiatives will also help in boosting the economy of Pakistan,” he said.

Airtel, Vodafone Idea to announce Q2 results on November 14

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Bharti Airtel had, last month, told the exchange that it has deferred the September quarter result announcement till November 14, due to the AGR issue.

NEW DELHI: Incumbent telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, which have been hit the hardest by the latest SC ruling on definition of telecom revenue, are scheduled to announce their financial results on November 14.

“Notice is hereby given that the meeting of Board of Directors of the company will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019, to consider and take on record the audited financial results (standalone and consolidated) for the second quarter and half year ended on September 30, 2019,” Airtel said in a regulatory filing.

Bharti Airtel had, last month, told the exchange that it has deferred the September quarter result announcement till November 14, due to the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) issue.

In a separate filing, Vodafone Idea also said its board will meet on November 14 to “to consider and approve the unaudited financial results of the company for the second quarter and half year ended September 30, 2019”.

Airtel, Vodafone Idea and other telecom operators may have to pay the government a whopping Rs 1.4 lakh crore following the recent Supreme Court order that sent shock waves through an industry already grappling with billions of dollars in debt and an intense tariff war to retain customers.

The Supreme Court, last month, upheld the government’s position on including revenue from non-telecommunication businesses in calculating the annual AGR of telecom companies, a share of which is paid as licence and spectrum fee to the exchequer.

According to the telecom department’s calculations, Bharti Airtel faces a liability of around Rs 42,000 crore after including licence fees and spectrum usage charges, while Vodafone Idea may have to pay about Rs 40,000 crore. Jio may have to pay around Rs 14 crore.

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

The apex court cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya.

JAIPUR: The spiritual head of Ajmer dargah on Saturday welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court on Ayodhya case and appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony.

The apex court on Saturday cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya, and directed the Centre to allot a 5-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque.

“The judiciary is supreme and everyone should respect the decision. It is the time to present a united face before the world because entire world is looking at India today,” Dargah Deewan Zainul Abedin Ali Khan said.

“We respect and accept the verdict. I appeal to the people of the country to maintain harmony and peace.

This is the victory of the judiciary and the message should be loud and clear that how much the judiciary is important for us and people of the country are peace-loving,”

He said that respecting and honouring the laws of the land is the basic Islamic teaching. “We now need to concentrate on the development of self and the nation

Rafael Nadal racing to be fit for ATP Finals with No.1 up for grabs

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

The Spaniard, who has never won the ATP Finals despite his trophy-laden career, dethroned Djokovic from the top of the rankings this week.

LONDON: Rafael Nadal is facing a race against time to be ready for the ATP Finals as he battles Novak Djokovic for the year-end number one ranking, admitting he is struggling with his serve.

The 33-year-old said he was happy to be in London after being forced to pull out of last week’s Paris Masters at the semi-final stage with an abdominal strain, but admitted he was not serving at full tilt ahead of his opening match against defending champion Alexander Zverev.

“I need to see how things evolve every single day,” he said. “I have good hopes to be 100 percent ready for Monday.”

Nadal is bidding to clinch the year-end number one spot in the ATP rankings for a fifth time — he is currently 640 points ahead of Djokovic ahead of the season-ending tournament in London, starting on Sunday.

The Spaniard, who has never won the ATP Finals despite his trophy-laden career, dethroned Djokovic from the top of the rankings this week.

He has often struggled with injuries towards the end of the season — missing the ATP Finals last year through injury and pulling out after just one match in 2017.

The top seed said he had only started practising his serving on Thursday and it had been “very slow”.

“I don’t want to lie to you,” he said. “I have confidence that it can go well but I also have the doubt that it can go badly because the time from what happened in Paris until today is very short.

“I’m not feeling uncomfortable because I haven’t really served. I’ve only served very slowly. With my training so far I don’t have any kind of problem, I feel perfect, I don’t have any kind of pain.”

Nadal, who won the French Open and US Open this year, said he had been happy with his form before his injury.

“I’m confident that I can be very competitive but of course it’s a tournament that you will face the top guys from the beginning so you need to be 100 percent ready,” he said.

“I really hope that I will be able to serve every single day better.”

Nadal’s opponents in the Andre Agassi group are Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Zverev.

The Bjorn Borg group features Djokovic, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini.

Djokovic, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this season, must reach the final in London to have any chance of overtaking Nadal at the top of the rankings.

The Serbian, who can claim a record-equalling sixth year-end number one finish, said he was hungry to finish the year on top.

“One of the two biggest achievements that you can have as a professional competitive tennis player — winning a Grand Slam and being number one in the world at the end of the season,” he said.

“At this stage of my career in terms of goals and achievements obviously that’s right at the top. In order for me to be in the position to be year-end number one I understand I have to be healthy and schedule well.”

The ATP Finals, featuring the year’s best eight players, is contested in a round-robin format with the best four players and doubles teams reaching the knockout semi-finals stage.

CBI raids IPS officers, others in IMA scam

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Agency raided 15 locations of officers and IMA entities and found incriminating documents and digital evidences

BENGALURU: In another huge embarrassment to the state bureaucracy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the residential premises of two serving senior IPS officers – Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Hemant Nimbalkar and Superintendent and Commandant, State Reserve Police, 1st Battalion Ajay Hilori in the alleged multi-crore I Monetary Advisory (IMA) ponzi scheme. The CBI had earlier searched the residence and official premises of Additional Director General of Police and former Bengaluru city police commissioner Alok Kumar in the illegal phone tapping scam.

The CBI raided 15 locations of officers and IMA entities and recovered “various incriminating documents, property documents, material objects and digital evidences in an ongoing investigation of a scam”, a CBI official said.

Besides Nimbalkar and Hilori, CBI sleuths conducted searches at the premises of suspended IAS officer and former deputy commissioner, Bengaluru Urban, B M Vijay Shankar; former assistant commissioner, Bengaluru North subdivision, L C Nagaraj; former chief engineer, Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), P D Kumar; and former village accountant, Bengaluru North subdivision, Manjunath. The CBI also raided the premises of former deputy SP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), E B Sridhara; then police inspector and station house officer, Commercial Street, M Ramesh; and former sub inspector, Commercial Street, Gowri Shankar.

The CBI has conducted searches at 15 locations – 11 in Bengaluru; one each in Mandya, Ramanagara, and Belagavi districts and one in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.Nimbalkar was then IGP, Economic Offences Wing, CID, and Hilori was posted as DCP Bengaluru (East) then.

The CBI stated: “These public servants had conducted inquiries against the IMA Group entities, furnished favourable reports and given clean chits to them. As a result, no action was allegedly initiated against IMA and the fraud continued unhindered due to the clean chit reports given by these officers despite the fact that the Reserve Bank of India had repeatedly flagged the issue about unauthorised collections and raising of deposits by IMA during the State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) meetings and had also written several letters to various authorities in Karnataka.”

Based on these letters from RBI, inquiries were conducted through these officers. “They allegedly failed in their duties in pointing out the glaring irregularities committed by the IMA, and gave clean chits. Investigation into the expenditure statements of IMA revealed the alleged payments of huge bribe amounts on multiple occasions by the founder and managing director Mohammed Mansoor Khan and other IMA directors to these officials,” the CBI spokesperson added.

The CBI had registered a case on August 30 in the IMA scam on the request of the state government and further notification from the Centre. The case was earlier being investigated by Karnataka Special Investigation Team.

Mansoor and other IMA entities had illegally collected deposits from the public in the form of investments on various ponzi schemes with a promise of getting high returns. Most of the deposits were allegedly misappropriated by Mansoor and other IMA entities for acquiring assets on their personal names and names of family members. “The accused have allegedly paid huge bribes to public servants and others as protection money to carry out their illegal activities,” the officer added.

INX Media case: ED opposes Chidambaram’s bail plea, says he tried to influence witnesses

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

The ED counsel contended that the set of evidence in the money-laundering case and the CBI corruption case is different and the PMLA case is more heinous.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday vehemently opposed the bail plea of former Union minister P Chidambaram, who is in jail in the INX Media money-laundering case, saying he has tried to influence and threaten witnesses.

The ED counsel contended that the set of evidence in the money-laundering case and the CBI corruption case is different and the PMLA case is more heinous and “much, much, much more serious than it meets the eyes

“It is the gravest of grave offence as it is an economic offence which is a standalone offence,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, argued.

Justice Suresh Kait heard the arguments of the ED counsel and Chidambaram and reserved the order on the bail plea.

The 74-year-old Chidambaram is in Tihar jail in the INX Media money-laundering case.

The senior Congress leader has sought bail, saying as the evidence is documentary and in the custody of probe agencies, he cannot tamper them.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, said since the beginning, the probe agency’s case was never that the Congress leader tried to influence witnesses, but suddenly in October, when he was in custody, it was alleged that he had tried to put pressure and influence key witnesses.

At the outset, the judge asked the solicitor general how many witnesses the ED has examined between October 24 and 30, when Chidambaram was in their custody.

Mehta said three witnesses were summoned during that period and while two did not appear, the third gave a handwritten letter and the witness is “so scared” that he does not want to be confronted with Chidambaram.

The high court pointed out that Chidambaram’s counsel has argued that up to October 24, there was no allegation of influencing witnesses and on October 30, when they sought extension of his police custody, which was denied by the trial court, the ED argued that he tired to influence witnesses.

To this, Mehta said the contention of influencing witnesses will only come while arguing on bail application and not at the time of seeking his police custody.

“Three witnesses were influenced and one of them is the person who gave us a handwritten letter. There is evidence that previously also he tried to influence, win over and threatened witnesses,” he submitted.

He added, “Prior to October 24 and even during this time, there was an attempt to influence witnesses. There is destruction of material evidence.”

Mehta said he will place in a sealed cover, the handwritten letter of the witness and the court can go through it to satisfy its conscience.

When the court asked if the ED has examined the concerned witness, he said after going through the letter, no prudent agency will confront him with the accused.

He said the investigation conducted till now has covered 16 countries, 12 properties abroad and 15 bank accounts linked to Chidambaram and Letters Rogatory have been sent to various countries.

On the issue whether the high court can look into the material placed by the agency in sealed cover, Mehta said the Supreme Court’s findings are clear and categorical that not only the court see the evidence, it is the custodian and guardian of the interest of justice.

He said the agency wants to protect its witnesses as they might be helping it in the investigation.

The ED, in its written response filed through advocates Amit Mahajan and Rajat Nair, has opposed the bail plea, saying the gravity of offences allegedly committed by Chidambaram does not entitle him for the relief.

Chidambaram, in the bail plea filed through advocate Arshdeep Singh, has denied ED’s claim that he used the office of finance minister for personal gains and laundered the proceeds of crime, saying no material directly or indirectly linking him with the alleged offence has been put to him so far or placed before the court.

The purpose of ED’s opposition to the grant of bail is not to advance the cause of justice but to harm his health which has already suffered severe damage after 75 days of custody since August 21, he said.

Chidambaram has referred to the Supreme Court’s October 22 order granting him bail in the CBI case and said it has stated there was no evidence of tampering, flight risk and influencing witnesses against him in the corruption case.

Chidambaram, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court on October 22 in the INX Media corruption case, is lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody in ED’s money-laundering case.

On November 1, the high court while disposing of the interim bail plea of Chidambaram, who was suffering from Crohn’s disease, had directed the Tihar Jail superintendent to provide him clean and hygienic surroundings and also mineral water, home-cooked food and mosquito protection nets and repellant.

Chidambaram had sought anticipatory bail in the money-laundering case from the high court which dismissed the plea.

The decision was challenged in the Supreme Court which also refused to grant him the relief.

The ED had arrested him in the money-laundering case on October 16.

He was arrested by the CBI on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case.

The case was registered by the CBI on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007, during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.

Thereafter, the ED had lodged a money-laundering case in this regard in 2017.

Ayodhya land dispute case ruled in favour of Hindus, Muslims given alternate plot for mosque

November 9, 2019 by Nasheman

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi ruled that a suitable plot of land measuring 5 acres shall be given to Sunni Waqf Board by state or Centre in Ayodhya.

NEW DELHI: In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of India overturned the Allahabad High Court order for the partition of the disputed land and directed that the land must be given to Hindus for construction of temple through a government-monitored trust and Muslims must be given an alternate land.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi ruled that a suitable plot of land measuring 5 acres shall be given to Sunni Waqf Board by state or Centre in Ayodhya.

In a unanimous judgement, the bench said, “Allahabad High Court was wrong in dividing the disputed site into three parts.”

The ruling also made it clear that in the scheme by Board of trustees, appropriate representation should be given to Nirmohi Akhara.

“Muslims have presented no evidence of exclusive possession prior to 1857. But thereafter they offered namaz there till they were ousted in 1949 through desecration,” rules court while dealing with Sunni Waqf board suit.

“Faith and belief of Ayodhya being birthplace of Ram is undisputed so as that of Muslims to worship at the mosque,” ruled the court.

The court ruled that Nirmohi Akhara suit not maintainable and it has no shebait rights (priestly rights).

ASI report establishes there was an underlying structure beneath the mosque and it was not Islamic in nature, observes the bench adding that “Sri Ram Lala Virajman is a juristic entity but Sri Ram Janmasthana isn’t.”

“Faith and belief of Hindus that Lord Ram was born under the inner dome and undisputed belief of Hindus. Once the faith is genuine, courts shouldn’t interfere,” rules SC

The order came on the 14 appeals which had been filed before the Supreme Court against the 2010 Allahabad high court judgment, which said the disputed 22.7 acres should be equally divided among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

Indian Sikh pilgrims will require passport to visit Kartarpur: Pakistan Army

November 7, 2019 by Nasheman

The Kartarpur Corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Punjab with Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur, just 4 kilometres from the IB.

Sikh devotees leave for Pakistan via Attari-Wagah border to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

ISLAMABAD: Indian Sikh pilgrims visiting the Kartarpur Sahib will need a passport to use the Kartarpur Corridor, which will be inaugurated this week, the Pakistan Army has said, according to a media report on Thursday, days after Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that Indian devotees would only need a valid ID to visit the revered Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.

The comments by Pakistan Army spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor came a day after India asked Pakistan to clarify whether passport will be required by the Sikh pilgrims to visit the Gurdwara in Kartarpur.

The Kartarpur Corridor, which provides a visa-free access to Indian Sikhs to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, will be inaugurated on Saturday by Prime Minister Imran Khan to mark Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniversary.

Maj Gen Ghafoor on Wednesday said that Indian Sikh pilgrims would require a passport to use Kartarpur Corridor, Dawn News quoted Hum News channel as saying.

“As we have a security link, the entry would be a legal one under a permit on a passport-based identity. There will be no compromise on security or sovereignty,” Ghafoor said.

On Wednesday, India asked Pakistan to clarify whether passport will be required to visit the Kartarpur Sahib.

On November 1, Prime Minister Khan, while announcing the completion of Kartarpur Corridor on Twitter, said he had waived two requirements relating to passport and registering 10 days in advance for Sikhs coming for the pilgrimage to Kartarpur from India.

He said that Sikh pilgrims from India would only need a valid ID and not a passport to travel to Kartarpur.

The service fee of USD 20 dollars for those coming for the inaugural ceremony and on the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikh Guru on November 12 was also abolished.

The year 2019 marks the 550th birth anniversary year of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, whose birthplace is Sri Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.

The corridor has been established to commemorate his birth anniversary.

The Kartarpur Corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Punjab with Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur, just 4 kilometres from the International Border, located at Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Notwithstanding a chill in bilateral ties over Kashmir, Pakistan and India after tough negotiations signed a landmark agreement last week to operationalise the historic Kartarpur Corridor to allow Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.

The two countries decided that 5,000 pilgrims can visit the shrine daily.

India and Pakistan have also decided that the corridor will be operational through the year and seven days a week and that pilgrims, except kids and elderly persons, will have a choice to visit it as individuals or in groups.

Deve Gowda eases stand on BJP within 24 hours, speaks of ‘friends’ across party lines

November 7, 2019 by Nasheman

HDK and his father hint at new warmth in ties with the BJP, are likely to support Yediyurappa govt after bypolls

JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda

BENGALURU: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, who had on Tuesday given out a ‘No’ to any understanding with the BJP, has changed his mind in less than 24 hours.

On Wednesday, he claimed that there are no “permanent enemies” in politics.

This easing of the stand has drawn some sharp comments from the Congress.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah said, “If they go with BJP, they are not secular.”

KPCC President Dinesh Gundu Rao went a step further to add that the JDS was “turning communal’’.

Political circles, closely watching the developments over the past fortnight, reacted cautiously when former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy first hinted at a thawing of relationship between the JDS and BJP, when he said that considering the floods and other challenges before the state, the BS Yediyurappa government shouldn’t be rocked.

He had also indicated that Yediyurappa need not worry about the outcome of the bypolls, seen as a broad hint that the JDS may stand by the BJP in the assembly.

And now comes Gowda’s statement that “there are no permanent enemies’’. Both father and son, who had earlier predicted mid-term polls in January, seem to be reading the tea leaves differently. Now, the Gowdas seem somewhat eager to allow the government to complete its full term.

Deve Gowda took pains to define “who is an enemy” and “who is a friend” in the optics of politics.

“Is CM Yediyurappa my enemy? Siddaramaiah and I have opposed and fought each other, but we have also shared the stage together, which is a sign of friendship.” He summed up, time and situations change everything, even friends and enemies.

This softening of stand towards BJP, by the former PM, who made a mark on the national stage as a proponent of secular politics, came as a surprise to observers even within the party.

Most observers had maintained that he would not support the BJP at any cost, to keep the identity and the branding of his Janata Dal Secular, intact.

However, now there is an increasing buzz within the JDS that the party may go the whole hog and support the BJP, should it fall short of MLAs after the December 5 bypolls. On Tuesday, it was reported that Gowda and Yediyurappa had spoken to each other. For form’s sake,  Gowda has maintained that they had spoken about “some other issue”.

Another telling sign of the thaw was the transfer of Bapugouda Patil, the police officer against whose ‘excesses’ Gowda had protested in Gurmitkal, and threatened to stage a protest outside Yediyurappa’s house on November 15.

Former minister Basavaraj Horatti has quite significantly said that he would do whatever the party leadership decides.

Puttanna suspended for anti-party activities

Former deputy chairman of the Council Puttanna was suspended from the JDS for indulging in “anti-party activities”.

Senior JDS leader HD Revanna used extremely harsh language against Puttanna recently after he was seen to be getting close to the BJP.

Third-time  MLC Puttanna term ends in seven months.
