Davis Cup Finals: Nadal’s Spain reach semifinal but Djokovic fails to save Serbia

November 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Spain will make its second straight semifinal appearance after Nadal and Marcel Granollers defeated Máximo González and Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the decisive doubles match.

MADRID: Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both played singles and doubles on Friday, but only the Spaniard was able to lead his team into the last four at the Davis Cup Finals.

Nadal guided Spain to a 2-1 comeback victory over Argentina, while Djokovic couldn’t prevent Serbia from being eliminated after a 2-1 loss to Russia.

Andy Murray didn’t play again on Friday, but Britain made the last four by beating Germany 2-0.

Spain will make its second straight semifinal appearance after Nadal and Marcel Granollers defeated Máximo González and Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the decisive doubles match in front of a lively and vocal crowd at the Caja Mágica center court.

Guido Pella had defeated Pablo Carreño Busta 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the first singles, but Nadal had kept Spain in contention with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman for his 27th straight Davis Cup singles victory.

“It was a must-win match, nothing else mattered,” the top-ranked Nadal said.

Argentina, backed by a boisterous group of fans that at times made more noise than the local Spanish crowd, was hoping to get some payback after it was beaten at home by Spain in the 2008 Davis Cup final, when it was heavily favored against a Spanish team that was without an injured Rafael Nadal. Spain also beat Argentina in the 2011 final played in Sevilla.

Argentina made the semifinals for the last time in 2016, when it won its only Davis Cup title.

Djokovic defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 to even the score at 1-1, then returned to the court about half an hour later to team with Viktor Troicki in the decisive doubles. They had three match points but lost to Khachanov and Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8).

“It hurts really badly,” Djokovic said. “These kinds of matches happen once in maybe forever. That’s it. The season is done and we’re turning the next page.”

The Russians converted on their first match point to put the team back in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2008.

“Both teams had a lot of chances,” said Rublev, who won the opening singles against Filip Krajinovic 6-1, 6-2. “It was like a coin toss, and we won this coin toss.”

Russia will next face Canada, which eliminated Australia on Thursday.

Serbia, the 2010 Davis Cup champion, was trying to return to the semifinals for the first time since 2017, when the team lost to eventual champion France.

After his 15th straight Davis Cup singles victory, Djokovic struggled in the doubles, although it was Troicki who squandered most of the chances in the tight tiebreaker, including some during the match points.

“I probably feel the worst ever,” Troicki said. “I never experienced such a moment in my career, in my life. And I let my team down, and I apologize to them.”

Djokovic, who hadn’t played in the Davis Cup since 2017, couldn’t hide his frustration as Serbia trailed in the second set, complaining with the umpire and hitting a ball deep into the stands after losing a point. He also requested medical assistance on his right arm.

Serbia was trying to reach the last four for the fourth time since winning its only Davis Cup title in 2010. It was runner-up once since then, in 2013.

Britain advanced past Germany thanks to Kyle Edmund’s 6-3, 7-5 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber and Daniel Evans’ 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (2) victory over Jan-Lennard Struff.

For the second day in a row, captain Leon Smith did not play Murray who, after a comeback victory in the first tie of the group stage, said he was not in his best shape.

“Made the decision last night after talking to the guys,” Smith said. “He could play, but I wouldn’t say he’s in his best condition, as he said to you guys the other day. He says that’s how he’s feeling. So we have to keep talking about it.”

Britain last played in the semifinals in 2016, a year after winning its 10th title.

Candidates go secular on campaign trail

November 23, 2019 by Nasheman

The secular campaigning was seen outside masjids too, where candidates of all three parties and their supporters were seen outside mosques, idgahs, and dargahs.

BENGALURU: Even while the ‘religious identity’ hangs heavily on the political landscape, many of the candidates contesting the bypolls have gone ahead and erased the divide and are canvassing at all places of religious worship.

While Congress MLA aspirant Rizwan Arshad visited temples in Shivajinagar, Tanvir Ahmed of the JDS was also not far behind. He was seen outside temples, on Friday.

The BJP candidate M Saravana was also found doing the same. This is not just one constituency, but the same could be seen across constituencies.

The secular campaigning was seen outside masjids too, where candidates of all three parties and their supporters were seen outside mosques, idgahs, and dargahs. They met people after the Friday afternoon prayers, handed out pamphlets, and made assurances of change. These were mostly BJP candidates, who
shifted from the Congress or the JDS.

Congress leader B K Hariprasad “During the election campaign, candidates and their supporters go everywhere seeking voters. These so-called lines that divide should not matter.’’

BJP leader Go Madhusudhan said, “It is just drama. Neither the Hindus who are going to mosques nor the Muslims who are visiting temples are interested in the divine. They go there merely to please the voters.’’ He also said these are his personal views and not of the BJP.

A Congress leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the lifting of Article 370 and Ayodhya verdict did not impact the elections in Haryana and Maharashtra and is not being used for canvassing by the BJP here. “Our nation is essentially secular and local issues matter. Hence, everyone is concerned about local issues. How does it matter if someone goes to a temple or a mosque to connect with the voters?”

Political analyst Harish Bijoor said, “Secularism is an inherent part of our national fabric. Ultimately, the voter is supreme. How does it matter if we meet in a mosque or a temple?’’

MUMBAI: Actor Emraan Hashmi recalled the tough phase in his life when his young son fought cancer.

The actor recently shot for a Karamveer Special episode of “Kaun Banega Crorepati 11” with Founder and CEO of Cuddles Foundation, Purnota Dutta Bahl, who is considered as a messiah for poor kids suffering from cancer.

“I have been following Purnota’s work since many years because my son was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, and later my mother too became a victim of the disease. A family is emotionally devastated when somebody from that family is diagnosed with cancer,” said Emraan.

“My son Ayaan’s remission phase – during which the cancer might make a comeback – was a tough phase for us as we parents go through a lot of fear psychosis. The whole process is psychologically disturbing. While researching about the disease, I got to know that nutrition plays an important role in the treatment as the body needs a strong immune system while going through the treatment. Even after the medical treatment, we have to focus on follow-up care, which involves proper nutrition and the well-being of a person, which has been the focal point of Cuddle foundation.”

Mumbai-resident Purnota is known for her work in providing nutrition to underprivileged children suffering from cancer in government and charitable hospitals.

Purnota said: “Firstly, I would like to reiterate that children’s cancer can be cured, so if you have the slightest of doubt that your child is unwell, please take them to a medical personnel. Also, Cuddle’s foundation has acquired success because most people in our organisation are medical professionals. People have wrong notion that people who work in NGOs don’t do well financially. The fact is that you can lead a comfortable life even while working for not-for-profits organisation.

“In today’s time, India needs more professionals to come forward and help us with these causes. Also, many children take medical treatment, but do not focus on nutrition which is also required for them to build immunity and fight the disease.”

Telcos knock on SC’s door for relief, file review petition on AGR verdict

November 23, 2019 by Nasheman

The telecom companies owe the government Rs 92,642 crore in unpaid license fee and another Rs 55,054 crore in outstanding spectrum usage charge.

Vodafone, Airtel

NEW DELHI: Vodafone Idea (VIL) and Bharti Airtel on Friday filed separate applications before the Supreme Court seeking a review of its October 24 verdict on adjusted gross revenue (AGR).

The apex court had ruled last month that AGR should include non-telecom receipts too and directed 16 telcos to pay pending licence fee dues worth Rs 92,640 crore to the Department of Telecom (DoT) within three months.

Among the reliefs sought by the companies in their review petitions is a prayer to waive off the penalties and interest on pending dues, sources say. Of the Rs 92,640 crore due, only Rs 23,189 crore is the
principal amount, while penalties and interest calculated over the duration of the 14-year long litigation comprise the rest. Airtel and VIL did not comment on the development.

Under the current taxation regime, telcos are mandated to pay the government licence fees (LF) and spectrum usage charges (SUC) calculated as a percentage of AGR. DoT estimates show telcos will need
to pay another Rs 55,055 crore toward pending SUC dues, bringing the total liability to over Rs 1.4 lakh crore.

Most of the telcos on the list are either defunct or non-operational, but the verdict had resulted in an immediate cash-flow crisis for Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel. While Bharti Airtel faces a total combined liability of Rs 35,586 crore towards LF and SUC dues, VIL is staring at a whopping Rs 53,038 crore cash outgo.

Providing for these liabilities (albeit partially) had seen both firms post their highest ever losses during the second quarter, with VIL’s Rs 50,922 crore net loss the largest recorded by an Indian company in history.

The two had consequently sought urgent relief from the government, red-flagging uncertainty over their ability to continue as going concerns.

The Union Cabinet reeled out a Rs 42,000-odd crore lifeline on Wednesday, approving the deferment of spectrum auction installments for financial year 2020-21 and 2021-22. But, the same day saw telecom
Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad reveal in Parliament that the Centre was not considering any relaxation in the AGR issue.

Analysts note that while the spectrum payments moratorium would relieve the financial burden on the companies partially, they were unlikely to offset the impact from the AGR bill. Especially in the
case of a struggling VIL.

“Even with the price hike in December, Vodafone Idea will need support,” Jefferies analysts said.

90 per cent Sikh heritage sites located in Pakistan: Indian-origin British historian

November 23, 2019 by Nasheman

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has the maximum number of such sites, has the potential to attract the Sikh community from across the globe.

Sikh pilgrims stand in a queue to visit the Shrine of Baba Guru Nanak Dev at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan.

PESHAWAR: Indian-origin British historian and author Bobby Singh Bansal, who is considered as an authority on Sikh heritage in Pakistan, has claimed that 90 per cent of the Sikh heritage sites are located in the country, mostly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as he underlined their potential to promote religious tourism.

Speaking at a guest talk titled ‘From Kartarpur to Khyber Pass’ at the Victoria Memorial Hall of Peshawar Museum on Friday, the UK-born historian took the audience to an interesting journey through a historic landscape dotted with Sikh era monuments, forts, battlefields, shrines, tombs, gurdwaras and havelies.

He said 90 per cent of the Sikh heritage sites are located in Pakistan.

The KP province, which has the maximum number of such sites, has the potential to attract the Sikh community from across the globe.

Bansal, who is also a filmmaker, talked about Sikh personalities associated with the KP province, particularly General Hari Singh Nalwa and Akali Phoola Singh.

Both died in KP and their tombs are there.

The ‘Jamrud Fort’ in Khyber district is a “goldmine” for attracting Sikh tourists because of the tomb of Nalwa there, he said.

Nalwa was the commander-in-chief of the army of the Sikh Empire.

“He is one of the most revered personalities among the Sikhs and people from the community would want to visit his tomb.

The love and association for Hari Singh Nalwa by Sikh community could be gauged from the fact that my own car number plate carry his name,” Bansal said.

If Pakistan allows Sikh diaspora to visit the cremation site and tomb of Nalwa, the community members from across the globe will rush to the site, he said.

He also highlighted other Sikh-era monuments, including the tomb of Akali Phoola Singh in Nowshera, the Balahisar Fort, Gor Ghattree, the Shabqadar Fort and the Bhai Biba Singh temple.

“These places should be on Sikh tourist map of KP. This topic is of particular interest to the Sikh diaspora from around the world who would like to travel to KP and be part of organised tours to be able to view this shared heritage,” he said at the lecture organised by the KP Directorate of Archeology.

Bansal, who is also the director of the Sikh Heritage Foundation UK, narrated his experiences of visiting the KP province since the1980s and the subsequent research, which led him to visit and document all the Sikh monuments in KP from 2007 to 2019.

Bansal is the man behind Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s life-size statue that was unveiled at the Mai Jindan Haveli in the Lahore Fort on the occasion of 180th death anniversary of the legendary Sikh ruler in June.

His father migrated to the UK from India in the early 1960s.

The accused, during interrogation, revealed that he had tracked Sait for more than two months and had maintained a low profile.

MYSURU: Farhan Pasha, accused of attacking Narasimharaja MLA and former minister Tanveer Sait, had planned to assault the leader during Id Milad function and protests over Tipu Jayanti in front of the MUDA office, a probe has revealed. MUMBAI: In the early hours of Saturday, decks were cleared for BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to again become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In a surprise twist, NCP’s Ajit Pawar lent his support to BJP and was also sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister.

The development comes hours after NCP Chief Sharad Pawar said that the Congress and NCP have consented Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray to become Maharashtra Chief Minister. The alliance of the three parties was expected to stake claim for government formation on Monday.

However, at around 8 am on Saturday morning, Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar went to Raj Bhavan where Governor BS Koshyari administered them the oath of office and secrecy.

Here is what happened when:

Sometime around 11.45 night – Ajit Pawar-BJP deal finalised.

11.45 p.m on Friday till Saturday 9 a.m. – Ajit Pawar stays put with Fadnavis, not to go back till sworn in.

11.55 pm (Friday) – Fadnavis speaks to Party and requests for swearing-in before anyone in Sena-NCP-Congress comes to know and stakes claim.

12.30 a.m. (Saturday) – Governor who was to travel out of Mumbai to New Delhi, cancels his travel

02.10 a.m. – Secy to Governor told to submit revocation order at 5.47 and arrange swearing-in at 6.30 a.m.

2.30 a.m. – Secy informs he will submit file within two hours and advises 7.30 a.m. for swearing-in as arrangements have to be made early on Saturday.

5.30 a.m. – Both Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis arrive at Raj Bhavan

5.47 a.m – President’s Rule revoked but announced at 9 a.m.

7.50 a.m – Swearing-in starts by Governor B.S. Koshyari

8.10 a.m. – Devendra Fadnavis sworn in as CM and NCP’ Ajit Pawar as in dy CM

8.40 a.m – PM Modi congratulates new CM and Dy CM

On Friday night, emerging from a marathon meeting of top leaders of the Congress, the NCP and the Sena, who are making efforts to form government in Maharashtra, Pawar said there was a consensus on Thackeray‘s leadership.

All three parties have agreed that Shiv Sena will keep the chief minister’s post for a full five-year term and there will be no rotation among the alliance, which was the main reason why Selena broke up with its ally BJP, who had refused to share the chief minister’s post for 2.5 years each.
