World’s Most Expensive Watch by Patek Philippe Fetches Rs 222 Crore, Beats Paul Newman Daytona

November 13, 2019 by Nasheman

The Patek Philippe ‘Grandmaster Chime’ was sold as part of the Only Watch auction held by Christie’s on Saturday to benefit research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy

A one-of-a-kind Patek Philippe watch sold for $31 million (Rs 222 crore) at a charity auction in Geneva, making it the most expensive wristwatch ever auctioned.

The Patek was sold as part of the Only Watch auction held by Christie’s on Saturday to benefit research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

For the sale, watchmakers including Patek, Audemars Piguet and F.P. Journe created and donated one-of-a-kind watches, which are coveted by top watch collectors around the world. The fact that the sale was for charity helped boost the bidding prices, according to the auctioneers, CNBC reported.

The buyer of the watch has not been identified.

The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime reference 6300A-010 is the only one of its kind that will be made in stainless steel.

It has 20 complications, including a grande and petite sonnerie, a minute repeater, instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display, second time zone, and 24-hour and minute subdial. The watch’s most unique feature is front and back dials – one salmon coloured, the other black – that can be flipped or reversed.

The steel Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 smashed the previous record for an auctioned watch – the $17.7 million fetched in 2017 for the Rolex Daytona once owned by Paul Newman.

India behind Pakistan, Somalia, Bangladesh in preventing deaths due to pneumonia: UNICEF report

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

According to the report, India ranked second with 1.27 lakh children succumbing to pneumonia in 2018 following Nigeria, which was on top with 1.67 lakh fatalities.

Due to failure of proper vaccination, Pneumonia cases seem to be on the rise in five countries including India.

PATNA: India remains behind Pakistan, Bangladesh and Somalia in containing deaths due to pneumonia, which was considered a forgotten global epidemic, finds a UNICEF 2018 report.

According to the report, India ranked second with 1.27 lakh children succumbing to pneumonia in 2018 following Nigeria, which was on top with 1.67 lakh fatalities.

Of the total pneumonia deaths in world’s top 15 countries in 2018, Pakistan accounted for 58,000 children, while Bangladesh and Somalia recorded fewer numbers.

The epidemic claimed lives of 8,000,00 children under the age of five last year, that is, one child in every 39 seconds, according to the report shared by UNICEF.

Due to failure of proper vaccination, pneumonia cases seem to be on the rise in five countries including India.

A press release by UNICEF mentioned that every day nearly 2,200 children under the age of five die from pneumonia, which is caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.

Alarmed at the re-emergence of this disease, six leading health and children’s organisations will host world leaders at the global forum on childhood pneumonia in January 2020.

The global experts in a joint call to action have urged the governments of the worst-affected countries, including India to develop and implement strategies to control and reduce pneumonia-related deaths.

US man kills wife over her liking for Hrithik Roshan, hangs himself

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

Dineshwar Budhidat of Queens fatally stabbed his wife Donne Dojoy, 27, who worked as a bartender and then hanged himself from a tree on Friday, a report in The New York Post said.

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan

NEW YORK: A 33-year-old man in the US allegedly stabbed his wife to death and then hanged himself because he was jealous of her liking for Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan, according to a media report.

.Budhidat was “extremely jealous” because his wife was a huge fan of Hrithik, Dojoy’s friends told The Post, adding that her liking for the actor sent him into fits of rage.

She told me when she was at home watching a movie or listening to a song (with Hrithik in it), he would ask her to take it off because he would get so jealous,” Mala Ramdhani, 52, a karaoke singer at Gemini’s Ultra Lounge in Ozone Park, where Dojoy tended bar, said.

“Any movie Hrithik acted in, she wanted to see it,” Ramdhani said.

The report said Dojoy had moved out of her apartment where she lived in with her husband but had agreed to stop by the place to watch a movie and be with Budhidat.

But later in the evening, Budhidat texted his wife’s sister, saying he had killed her, and instructing that the key to the apartment could be found under a flower pot, police sources said later Friday.

He then left behind his wife’s stabbed body and hanged himself from a tree in a field nearby, the report said.

The New York Daily News reported that Budhidat had assaulted her weeks after they got married in July.

Dojoy even had an order of protection against Budhidat that came in a court case which stemmed from his arrest in August for slapping and strangling Dojoy a week earlier inside their Queens apartment.

“I think he loved her but at the same time, he was obsessed with her, because of the type of job she did,” Rodney, a friend of Dojoy’s, said in the report.

“She looked good, she always made her money, so he was probably jealous of her. Dojoy had told her friends that he was controlling and even violent with her at times.”

“She talked about him abusing her, controlling her, beating her, scaring her, threatening to kill her,” Rodney added.

“She never took it seriously because she loved him.”

Dojoy’s aunt, Silvin Dojoy, called her niece “a lovely young lady.”

“A beautiful girl. She was intelligent, and she worked hard.”

Of the husband, she said, “He was a coward. Who acts like that? Lift your hands against a woman? That’s a cowardly act. There is no reason for him to have done what he did. It’s unbelievable. He had no right to do what he did.”

Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas wants Yogi Adityanath to head temple Ram Temple trust

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

The Nyas said that Adityanath should head the trust as Mahant of the Goraksha Peeth and not as Chief Minister.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath

AYODHYA: The Ram Janambhoomi Nyas has said that it wants Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to head the trust that will oversee the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The Nyas said that Adityanath should head the trust as Mahant of the Goraksha Peeth and not as Chief Minister.

Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, who heads the Nyas, said: “The Ram Janambhoomi Nyas wants Yogi Adityanath to head the Trust. The prestigious Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur that belongs to the Goraksha Peeth, has played a prominent role in the Ram temple movement. Mahant Digvijay Nath, MahantAvaidyanath and now Yogi Adityanath have been integral parts of the temple movement.”

He also said that the Nyas will have a prominent role to play in the proposed trust but did not divulge the details.

“Other members of the trust could be Champat Rai (Vishwa Hindu Parishad Vice President) and Om Prakash Singhal (VHP Treasurer).”

After the demise of VHP leader Ashok Singhal in 2015, Champat Rai has been overseeing the activities of the VHP and its frontal organizations and is one of the leading luminaries of the VHP.

Both, Rai and Om Prakash Singhal are based in New Delhi.

Mahant Kamal Nayan Das, the designated heir to Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, said: “The trust for construction of the Ram temple will operate under the supervision of Mahant Nritya Gopal Das.”

Mahant Kamal Nayan Das represented the Nyas in the meeting with national security advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Sunday where several Hindu and Muslim religious leaders were present.

In a related development, the Digambar Akhara that was headed by Mahant Paramhans Ramchandra Das, also the Nyas president till he passed away in 2003, has announced that their head, Mahant Suresh Das, would be meeting Adityanath on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

The Akhara maintained that no existing trust should be told to construct the Ram temple.

Meanwhile, Mahant Dinendra Das of the Nirmohi Akhara has struck a discordant note by opposing the Ram Janambhoomi Nyas.

“We have been fighting against the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas. How can we agree to become a member of their trust? They can surrender their trust and become part of the trust with us. It is for the government to find a solution and bring everyone together,” he told reporters.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous verdict on November 9 on the Ayodhya title suit, had rejected the Nirmohi Akhara’s claim to shebait rights of serving the deity and managing its property.

But the Bench, taking note of “the historical presence of Nirmohi Akhara at the disputed site and their role” directed the Centre that it should, while framing a scheme to form a trust, assign “an appropriate role in the management” to the Akhara.

Yes Bank: Why worst-performing bank stock is now seeing world’s biggest surge

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

India’s billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala this month bought shares of Yes Bank, after the lender announced a binding offer from an unidentified global investor to inject $1.2 billion.

Yes Bank branch

Yes Bank Ltd., the world’s worst-performing lender in 2019, has posted the globe’s biggest gain over the past month.

Its shares have rallied about 50% — the biggest gain among global peers valued at more than $1 billion — after embattled founder Rana Kapoor was forced to sell his holdings in October and a new management team promised fresh capital and lower bad loans. The surge helped pare the annual loss in the Mumbai-based lender’s shares to 63%.

Yes Bank rose about 3% as of 9:48 a.m. in Mumbai on Monday, while the main equity index was little changed.

The recovery will be a relief for new Chief Executive Officer Ravneet Gill, who’s been courting investors to revive the bank. India’s billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala this month bought shares of Yes Bank, after the lender announced a binding offer from an unidentified global investor to inject $1.2 billion.

Gill is rushing to raise funds. Latest results released this month show Yes Bank swung to a loss in the September quarter and its bad-loan ratio rose.

“Capital is of utmost importance to the bank and we want the money to be in the bank by December,” Gill told reporters after the results. “Once we get the capital it will run us for 24 months.”

Lata Mangeshkar stable but still in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

Lata Mangeshkar’s health scare caused a frenzy in the world of social media, where some reports claimed that her condition was critical and some said that she was discharged.

The iconic singer, who turned 90 on September 28, became a recipient of India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna in 2001.

MUMBAI: Bollywood playback legend Lata Mangeshkar remains hospitalised here on Tuesday due to “viral chest congestion”, and was fighting the illness like a “fighter”, according to her family.

The iconic singer was rushed to the Breach Candy Hospital in the early hours of Monday due to viral chest congestion as a “precautionary measure”. Her condition is stable now.

“Lata ji is stable. Her parameters are good. Honestly speaking, she has fought so well that she is coming out of this setback. Being a singer, her lung capacity has pulled her through. Truly a fighter. We will update everyone when Lataji gets discharged and comes home,” her family said.

On Monday, Lata Mangeshkar’s health scare caused a frenzy in the world of social media, where some reports claimed that her condition was critical and some said that she was discharged. Her team had to release a statement to put the record straight.

“Lata Mangeshkar ji had a viral chest congestion. Keeping her age in mind, as a precautionary measure, she has checked in to Breach Candy Hospital in order to ensure antibiotics on time to prevent any more infection. She is stable and recovering,” read the statement.

The iconic singer, who turned 90 on September 28, became a recipient of India’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna in 2001. She has recorded songs in over 36 Indian languages.

Born on September 28, 1929, she has also been honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award and France’s highest civilian award, Officer of the Legion of Honour, besides numerous national and international awards.

In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records ranked her as the most recorded artiste in the history. She had reportedly sung over 25,000 songs between 1948 and 1974.

She has given many musical gems like “Pyar kiya to darna kya” and “Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh”, but doesn’t consider herself to be special.

“I never thought of myself as special even when those who have heard and appreciated my singing said I was. For me, the constant effort in life has been to better myself as a person and an artiste,” she had said.

Kartarpur Corridor: Pilgrim turnout poor because of passport muddle

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

While 225-odd pilgrims were allowed to visit the holy shrine in the neighbouring country through the corridor on Sunday, the number swelled to 400 devotees on Monday.

DERA BABA NANAK/AMRITSAR: A total of about 625 pilgrims were allowed to visit Darbar Sahib Gurdwara at Kartarpur in Pakistan through the Kartarpur Corridor in two days (Sunday and Monday) after its grand unveiling on November 9 by PM Narendra Modi.

While 225-odd pilgrims were allowed to visit the holy shrine in the neighbouring country through the corridor on Sunday, the number swelled to 400 devotees on Monday.

The poor turnout is due to the fact that a large number of pilgrims are still confused about whether or not they require a passport to travel through the corridor.

Besides, they are facing technical problems while applying on the portal. The newly built Integrated Check Post on the Indian side is also incomplete.

On the inauguration of the corridor, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh led the first jatha of 550 pilgrims, many of them high-profile people.

As per the agreement between Indian and Pakistan, the neighbouring country will allow 5,000 Indian pilgrims daily to visit the gurdwara where Guru Nanak Dev spent last 18 years of his life.

The opening of Kartarpur Corridor has rekindled hope among Sikhs devotees for the revival of ‘Punj-Aab’ bus service between Amritsar and Lahore-Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak.

The bus service was suspended by Pakistan after the Union government revoked Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

One had to travel to Delhi to get the visa from the Pakistani High Commission, a tedious process. Expressing hope that the bus service would be revived, SGPC chief secretary Roop Singh said, “We can depute our staff to get the devotees’ documents processed from the high commission. We are ready to act as a facilitator if entrusted with the responsibility.”

Dera Baba Nanak: A sea of devotees thronged the historic Gurdwara Ber Sahib here, which reverberated with the sound of Gurbani (hyms), and took a dip in the holy Kali Bein, a day before the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

More than 25 lakh pilgrims have visited here in last 10 days. Most of the pilgrims are coming from Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar and Maharashtra, apart from the US, the UK, Canada and Australia.

Devotees also thronged Darbar Sahib at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur, Golden Temple in Amritsar and Nada Sahib in Panchkula.

No immediate threat to BSY govt, says Deve Gowda

November 12, 2019 by Nasheman

Talking about fielding candidates for by elections, Deve Gowda said that his party would put up a strong fight in five-six seats, and may win most of these seats.

KALABURAGI: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, who seems to be changing his stance about the stability of the current BS Yediyurappa government every few days, has now said that there is no immediate threat to BSY government, even after the bypolls. Speaking to the press in Kalaburagi on Monday, the JDS national president claimed that no party will be able to secure all the 15 seats going to polls, while also clarifying that there is no question of him supporting either the BJP or the Congress, nor will they try to topple the government to come to power.

“Me and other JDS leaders will concentrate only on strengthening the party over the next three years so that it can come to power on its own in the next assembly elections,” he said. He also maintained that the only way the BSY government will be toppled now is due to internal bickering within the BJP. Talking about fielding candidates for byelections, Deve Gowda said that his party would put up a strong fight in five-six seats, and may win most of these seats.

“I am interested in strengthening the party rather than thinking about who will benefit from the presence of JDS candidates,” he said, adding that no dissatisfied leaders of the BJP and Congress have expressed a desire to contest on a JDS ticket, but that some of them have contacted H D Kumaraswamy and Bandeppa Kashempur. The list of JDS candidates will be announced in a few days, probably by Wednesday, he said. Commenting about the political situation in Maharashtra, Deve Gowda said he feels there is nothing wrong in the Shiv Sena seeking the support of NCP and the Congress in forming the government.

President accepts Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant resignation from Modi Cabinet, gives portfolio to Javadekar

Sawant’s resignation came after the BJP on Sunday expressed its inability to form a government in Maharashtra, despite being the single largest party.

NEW DELHI: A day after Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant quit as the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday accepted his resignation and gave the additional charge of the Ministry to Cabinet Minister Prakash Javadekar.

In a statement, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that the President, as advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has accepted Sawant’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect.

It said Javadekar, who holds the portfolios of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, as well as Information and Broadcasting, would be given the additional charge.

“Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, the President has directed that Javadekar be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, in addition to his existing portfolios,” it added.

Sawant was Shiv Sena’s sole representative in the Union Cabinet formed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA.

His resignation came after the BJP on Sunday expressed its inability to form a government in Maharashtra, despite being the single largest party.

Despite having a pre-poll alliance, the BJP and Shiv Sena were locked in a tussle over the Chief Minister’s post after the Assembly election results were announced on October 24.

The BJP got 105 seats and Shiv Sena bagged 56 seats. The combined seat strength of the two parties was 161, way past the majority mark of 145 in the 288-member Assembly.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), with 54 seats, demanded that the Shiv Sena will have to walk out of the NDA for any alliance in the state. The Congress got 44 seats in the 288-member Assembly.
