Kamlesh Tiwari murder: Hubballi man may know accused, but not directly involved

October 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Sadiq was sent home on Tuesday after being questioned by officers of the Internal Security Division (ISD) of Karnataka police in Hubballi.

BENGALURU: Mohammed Sadiq Kuppelur, who was questioned on Tuesday in the Hindu Samaj Party leader Kamlesh Tiwari murder case, may know some of the murder accused but was not found complicit, police said. Central agencies had intercepted a call from another accused, Sayed Asim Ali of Nagpur, to Sadiq, following which he was questioned.

Sadiq was sent home on Tuesday after being questioned by officers of the Internal Security Division (ISD) of Karnataka police in Hubballi.

A senior police officer from Uttar Pradesh told The New Indian Express that Sadiq is reportedly “not involved” in the crime. “Sadiq was questioned by Karnataka police based on a phone call between him and another accused, Sayed Asim Ali of Nagpur, which was intercepted by central agencies. Ali was heard asking Sadiq to arrange for a lawyer for the surrender of the accused. Ali had earlier received a call from prime accused Sheikh Ashfaq Hussain to arrange for a lawyer,” said the officer.

“The information obtained following his interrogation was shared with UP police for follow-up action. There’s no case against Sadiq in Karnataka,” a Karnataka police officer said.
“Sadiq’s association with the Tiwari murder accused will, however, be investigated,” he added. So far, eight men, including two prime accused, Ashfaq (21) and Pathan Moinuddin Ahmed (23) from Gujarat have been arrested in the sensational murder case.

The names of the other accused who were arrested are Rashid Ahmed Pathan (23), Faizan (21) and Maulana Salim Sheikh (24) from Gujarat, Maulana Anwar-ul-Haq and Mufti Naeem Kazmin from Bijnor in UP, and Sayed Asim Ali (29) from Nagpur in Maharashtra.

Fat accumulates in the lungs of overweight and obese people

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

A recent study found that fat accumulates in the airway walls within the lungs causing wheezing and asthma in overweight or obese people.

WASHINGTON DC: A recent study found that fat accumulates in the airway walls within the lungs causing wheezing and asthma in overweight or obese people.

Scientists already know that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from wheezing and asthma, but the reasons for this have not been completely explained.

The new study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, suggests that this fatty tissue alters the structure of people’s airways and it could be one reason behind the increased risk of asthma.

“Our research team studies the structure of the airways within our lungs and how these are altered in people with respiratory disease,” said the study’s author John Elliot, a senior research officer at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Western Australia.

“Looking at samples of lung, we spotted fatty tissue that had built up in the airway walls. We wanted to see if this accumulation was correlated with body weight,” added Elliot.

The researchers examined post-mortem samples of the lung that had been donated for research and stored in the Airway Tissue Biobank. They studied samples from 52 people, including 15 who had no reported asthma, 21 who had asthma but died of other causes and 16 who died of asthma.

Using dyes to help visualise the structures of 1373 airways under a microscope, they identified and quantified any fatty tissue present. They compared this data with each person’s body mass index (BMI).For the first time, the study showed that fatty tissue accumulates in the walls of the airways. The analysis revealed that the amount of fat present increases in line with increasing BMI. The research also suggests that this increase in fat alters the normal structure of the airways and leads to inflammation in the lungs.

“Being overweight or obese has already been linked to having asthma or having worse asthma symptoms. Researchers have suggested that the link might be explained by the direct pressure of excess weight on the lungs or by a general increase in inflammation created by excess weight,” said co-author, Dr. Peter Noble, an associate professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

“This study suggests that another mechanism is also at play. We’ve found that excess fat accumulates in the airway walls where it takes up space and seems to increase inflammation within the lungs. We think this is causing a thickening of the airways that limits the flow of air in and out of the lungs, and that could at least partly explain an increase in asthma symptoms, ” Dr. Peter Noble added.

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

When the teenager was informed that Jeff Bezos owns one of the largest companies in the world, he turned around, saying, ‘Big deal, so what?’

WASHINGTON: Jeff Bezos may be the richest person on Earth, but for a high school student in the US capital, the Amazon CEO is just an ordinary man and there is “no big deal” if he is around on a surprise visit.

In a video which has now gone viral, the Amazon founder and president is seen visiting a company-funded computer science class at Dunbar High School in Washington, DC and interacting with the students.

As Bezos began talking to students about Amazon’s “Future Engineer programme”, which funds many courses around the US, a student was seen asking “Who’s Jeff Bezos?” twice to another student sitting behind him.

When the teenager was informed that Bezos owns one of the largest companies in the world, he turned around, saying, “Big deal, so what?”

A moment later, Bezos was seen talking to the same student who explained to him about his computer project. Bezos told him: “You are a good storyteller. Keep up that skill too”.

At Dunbar High school in DC. Where Amazon is announcing the expansion of the Amazon Future Engineer program now funding tech ed for 2,000 schools in United States.

The video was taken by NBC Washington’s Caroline Tucker at the school on Monday.

“This morning @amazon is at Dunbar High School in DC to announce a milestone in its Future Engineer Program. They had a surprise guest… Jeff Bezos,’ she tweeted.

“The young man in the class ended up being the only one who spoke to Jeff Bezos about how much he has learned about coding. Later on, he told me he wanted to “seize” the opportunity to talk to the CEO,” Tucker added.

Several people reacted on her tweet:

Another tweeted: “People is judging the kid, but he is there to learn and maybe high-tech celebrities are not on his wish list”.

According to the New York Post, the teacher of the class said “only about three” of her 15 students knew who Bezos was when he walked into the classroom.

Bezos, who owns the Washington Post, is the richest man in the world with an estimated net worth of $110 billion despite a huge divorce settlement with ex-wife MacKenzie Bezos worth $35.6 billion in Amazon stock — making her one of the top five richest women in the world and one of Amazon’s largest shareholders.

LPG demand soars with population boom

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Last fiscal year, the plant had filled over 216 lakh cylinders, and this year, the number is expected to exceed to 250 lakh cylinders.

BENGALURU: With many people migrating from other parts to the state for better employment opportunities and for other reasons, the Indian Oil (Karnataka) has seen a higher demand in the sale of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders by 7-10%  in the present year.

The Devangonthi Bottling Plant – Indian Oil, located in Hoskote, supplies 203 LPG distributors, comprising six major districts of Bengaluru urban and rural, Kolar, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur and Ramanagara, adding to 55% of total LPG supplied by IOC in Karnataka.

Last fiscal year, the plant had filled over 216 lakh cylinders, and this year, the number is expected to exceed to 250 lakh cylinders. “The highest demand for gas cylinders we see is for domestic purposes. People have started migrating, and we are seeing an increase in demand. This year, we had a 97% coverage, with 7-10% higher demand for gas cylinders. This apart, even those using induction cookers, have now started opting for gas cylinders,” said N Konar, general manager of the plant.

To meet the growing needs, this year, 48-point cylinder filling carousels were commissioned to the plant, double the size of the conventional 24-point carousels.During 2019-20, IOC released new connections to the tune of Rs 2.38 lakh, of which 1.47 lakh connections are under the Ujjwala Scheme, which is the highest for the industry.

Devangonthi terminal goes smart
The Devanagonthi terminal of the IOC, which supplies 30% of the petroleum demands of Karnataka, is now called a ‘smart terminal’, with automation taking over the fuel filling process to ensure safety and convenience. This ensures quality control, interlocked safety systems, productivity, transparency and customer satisfaction.

Unions’ strike against PSB mergers partially hits banking operations

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

The whole priority will now shift to mergers and bad loan recovery will become the casualty,” General Secretary of All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) C H Venkatachalam said.

A deserted view of Union Bank where employees participated in a strike following the nationwide call by All India Bank Employees Association against the merger of public sector banks in Chennai

MUMBAI: The all India bank strike against the merger of 10 public sector banks saw more than three lakh employees participate throughout the country has hit banking service across the country, General Secretary of All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) C H Vekatachalam said.

Eastern part of the country saw virtually all the branches being closed, and in other states where the branches were open also had an impact on transactions according to AIBEA. More than 20 lakh instruments worth over Rs 15,000 crore were not collected due to the strike, it said.

Functioning of the ATMs, online transfers and remittances mitigated the all India bank strike, bankers to a great extent, officials at some of the public sector banks said. Except for rural and branches with fewer staff, there should may not have been a major impact on customers from Tuesday’s bank employees’ strike, the officials added. City branches to a greater extent have been able to keep their functions on, they further said.

AIBEA and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) had given a call for strike mainly to protest against the merger of ten public sector banks announced recently – they had termed consolidating 10 banks to 4 as shutting down 6 important nationalised banks.

“Merger is unwarranted in the present moment. Branches will be closed, services will be affected. Big banks will take big risk, giving big loans. There is no tangible benefit to banks, we have seen SBI merger, no tangible real problem is in bad loans, priority to recover. Now, the whole priority will shift to mergers, bad loan recovery will become the casualty,” Venkatachalam said.

He said the meeting with the Chief Labour Commissioner in which the finance ministry officials also participated did not have any meeting points over the issue of merger ahead of the strike. Finance ministry officials had indicated that the merger is beneficial and any issues arising out of merger would be addressed after the merger, he said.

State Bank of India had last week said it expected minimal impact of the strike. In a filing with the stock exchanges it said, “the membership of our bank employees in unions participating in strike is very few, so the impact of strike on Banks operation will be minimal”

According to the government plan, United Bank of India and Oriental Bank of Commerce are to be merged with Punjab National Bank, making the proposed entity the second largest public sector bank (PSB). Syndicate Bank is to be merged with Canara Bank, while Allahabad Bank will be merged with Indian Bank. Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank will amalgamate with the Union Bank of India.

India beat South Africa in Ranchi to sweep Test series 3-0

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

RANCHI: India registered an emphatic victory over South Africa by an innings and 202 runs in the third and final Test at the JSCA Stadium on Tuesday to clinch their first-ever series whitewash over the Proteas.

Needing just two wickets to maintain their supremacy on Day 4, the Indian team completed the formalities within the first 12 balls giving away just one run and concluded what has been a highly dominant show by the No.1 ranked team over South Africa.

Overnight batsman Theunis de Bruyn — who came in as concussion substitute for Dean Elgar — was the first to go as he became Shahbaz Nadeem’s first victim in the second innings. He was caught brilliantly by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha at his individual score of 30.

The very next ball, Nadeem took a rebound catch to dismiss Lungi Ngidi. Ngidi seeing the tossed up delivery went for a hoick straight down the ground and it was struck so hard that Anrich Nortje at the non-striker’s end had no time to react and the ball popped up. Nadeem was alert to the possibility of a rebound and took an easy catch to bring an end to the South Africa second innings at 132.

Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav picked up five wickets apiece during the course of the Test match and spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant Nadeem also contributed to India’s success by scalping 3, 1 and 4 wickets respectively.

Earlier, South Africa were bundled out for mere 162 in their first innings in response to India’s 497/9 declared and skipper Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on for the eighth time in his career. Rohit Sharma had scored his maiden double hundred and was well supported by India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane who scored his first ton in India in three years.

The performance of the visitors in the second essay was no different as they kept on losing wickets right from the start and showed no application whatsoever. The Proteas batsmen appeared clueless against the class of the Indian bowlers, especially Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami.

South Africa had already lost the Test series by tasting comprehensive defeats in the first two Tests. In Visakhapatnam, India won by 203 runs and went to register an emphatic innings and 137 runs in Pune.

India now have 240 points in the ongoing World Test Championships after winning all the five matches they have played so far since the inception of WTC and are currently placed at the top spot.

They are now scheduled to play Bangladesh in the two-Test series beginning November 14.

Brief scores: India: 497/9 declared beat South Africa 162 all out and 132 by an innings and 202 runs.

BJP starts preparation for polls in Delhi & Jharkhand

October 23, 2019 by Nasheman

The BJP working president J P Nadda on Tuesday held a strategy meeting with party general secretaries to prepare for the prospects of Jharkhand and Delhi Assembly polls.

NEW DELHI: The BJP working president J P Nadda on Tuesday held a strategy meeting with party general secretaries to prepare for the prospects of Jharkhand and Delhi Assembly polls.

The EC is likely to announce poll dates for Jharkhand soon, while the political circle is abuzz with speculations that Delhi elections could be advanced. The BJP poll machinery is already in an overdrive in Jharkhand. The state chief minister Raghubar Das has already concluded his yatra, which was started from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) stronghold

Nadda is learnt to have discussed with party general secretaries about the organisational programmes in the two states to gear the outfit for elections. While the BJP will seek to retain power in Jharkhand, the saffron outfit would be aiming to wrest power in Delhi from Aam Admi Party. The BJP, incidentally, has been out of power in Delhi since 1998.

The BJP is working to launch a spirited campaign in Delhi where AAP is seen to have taken initiative with campaigns around city government’s programmes. With the Congress facing a daunting task to build organisation in the city, the BJP is bracing up for the prospects of an almost direct contest with AAP.
Nadda also reviewed the preparations for the organisational elections, which would conclude with the poll to elect the new president of the party in December.

The BJP is aiming to wrap up district and state level organisational elections by next month by which at least half of the members of the national council of the outfit would be elected to pave way for the national elections.
