Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Sunday that at least three persons, including a policeman, were injured in a blast outside its Consulate General in the volatile Jalalabad city in Afghanistan.

Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded outside the consulate in Jalalabad.

“IED exploded outside holding area of our Consulate General in Jalalabad. All Pakistani staff are safe.

One policeman and two applicants are reportedly wounded,” he said in a tweet.

“We are in contact with Afghan authorities to ensure strengthened security for Consulate General’s premises and personnel,” Faisal said.

No outfit has taken responsibility of the attack.

The consulate had been shut down in August last year, before resuming operations two months later, a media report said.

The eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, also the provincial capital of Nangarhar, has seen violence erupt multiple times in the recent past.

On August 19, a series of bombings struck restaurants and public squares, wounding at least 34 people as the country marked the 100th anniversary of its independence.

In May, three explosions had ripped through the provincial capital, killing three people and wounding another 20.

INX Media case: In setback to Chidambaram, SC dismisses former Finance Minister’s plea seeking anticipatory bail

August 26, 2019 by Nasheman

The court also asked Chidambaram to move the trial court for regular bail, saying since he has been arrested, his appeal challenging Delhi High Court order has become infructuous.

Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram is being taken to court by the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI officials in the INX Media money laundering case in New Delhi.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed plea of former Union Minister P Chidambaram seeking anticipatory bail in the INX Media case, saying that the senior Congress leader has been already arrested and the case has become infructuous.

Hearing on the other two petitions of the former Union Minister going on at the apex court.

The court also asked Chidambaram to move the trial court for regular bail, saying since he has been arrested, his appeal challenging Delhi High Court order denying anticipatory bail has become infructuous.

The senior Congress leader’s counsel Kapil Sibal told the apex court,” If the arrest had taken place and I had filed it later, the petition against Delhi High Court would be infructuous. I have a right under law to be heard.”

Sibal said this after Justice Banumathi said CBI matter became infructuous as Chidambaram had already been arrested in the INX Media Case.

The bench in return asked Sibal whether his petition for anticipatory bail had not become infructuous as he has been arrested now.

“We can’t convert your petition against rejection of anticipatory bail into a petition for regular bail,” said Justice Bhanumathi.

Sibal hit back by saying, “we have not being heard and the plea was listed for Friday in SC and then I was arrested by CBI. We have even challenged  the trial court’s remand order.”

Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi also argued that CBI should not have acted like this when the matter was pending in SC.

Earlier on Monday, to the surprise of senior Congress leader’s legal team, the third petition which challenges the trial court order which granted CBI custody till Monday was not listed in the apex court.

On this, senior advocate Kapil Sibal approached the bench headed by Justice R Banumathi to inform her about the non-listing of the matter.

The Judge responded that she is aware of the things and has sent the file to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for necessary approvals and the matter will be listed accordingly.

“The registry has some difficulty and we have to take orders from the Chief Justice,” the bench told Sibal.

The hearing on this case assumes significance as Chidambaram’s custody ends today and in case his petition doesn’t get listed then CBI will seek further remand of the former Finance Minister.

The special judge in the CBI court will also be bound by the Supreme Court’s orders passed in these cases and will have hence await the outcome of the proceedings there.

On Friday, the apex court had granted protection from arrest till Monday to Chidambaram in the money-laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate.

The court has sought replies from ED on Chidambaram’s plea and directed that all the three matters should be listed on Monday.

Chidambaram has contended that it is a violation of his fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution, that his petition challenging the high court order was not heard by the apex court on July 20 and 21 and he was arrested on the August 21 night.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for ED, had said that lot of “hue and cry” and “political vendetta” is alleged by the petitioner (Chidambaram) and his party colleagues but “I am saying with a great sense of responsibility that this is a case of money laundering of a monumental magnitude”.

“CBI has recorded the statement of Indrani Mukherjea, which will be tested in the trial, that she and her husband Peter had gone to Chidambaram for FIPB approval and he (Chidambaram) had asked them to take care of his son,” Mehta had argued.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearances granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.

Thereafter, the ED lodged a money-laundering case in 2017.

Chidambaram was arrested on August 21 night from his Jor Bagh residence by the CBI in the corruption case and was produced before a trial court on August 22, which remanded him to four-day CBI custody till August 26.

Governor Satya Pal Malik denies shortage of drugs in Jammu and Kashmir

August 26, 2019 by Nasheman

Many of the chemists’ shops in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley have reportedly closed as they have run out of life-saving drugs.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik

SRINAGAR: Drug stores in Srinagar are reportedly exhausting their stock of life-saving drugs fast, and have already run out of cancer drugs due to the lockdown and communication blockade in Kashmir.

Owners of drug stores and patients complained on Sunday that many drugs were not available in the market.

However, Governor Satya Pal Malik denied any shortage of medicines and essential commodities in Jammu and Kashmir and said that communication curbs had helped save lives. Malik said enough stocks were available for people to buy.

Fayaz Ahmad, owner of Chinar Medicate at Karan Nagar, outside SMHS Hospital, said that his drug store was running short of cancer drugs.

He said the drugs were not available as the stockists had not received fresh supplies of medicines since the restrictions were imposed in the Valley before the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked on August 5.

“If we don’t get fresh supplies, we will exhaust our stock of life-saving drugs in two weeks,” Ahmad said.

The owner of Aqsa Medicate, also at Karan Nagar, said they had received some supplies of life-saving drugs from the distributors “but the stock will not last more than three weeks.” Due to the communications curbs, the distributors and stockists were “unable to contact the companies wherefrom they used to order supplies,” he said.

Many of the chemists’ shops in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley have reportedly closed as they have run out of life-saving drugs.

JAIPUR: Section 144 has been imposed and internet services suspended in Sawai Madhopur district’s Gangapur City in Rajasthan following a communal clash during a VHP rally, police said. The rally was organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on its foundation day on Sunday.

According to Sawai Madhopur – Superintendent of Police, Sudhir Chaudhary: “The VHP workers were raising slogans at a procession when slogans started coming from the Jama Masjid side as well.

“Soon, the minority community started pelting stones on the rally leading to a stampede-like situation. Police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob, which vandalised six vehicles.”

Later, the VHP members staged a sit-in at Favvara Chowk demanding arrest of all accused.

“Additional police force has been deployed in the city as well as in Karauli and Bharatpur and 25 people have been arrested,” he said.

Additional Commissioner of Police Laxman Gaur said the situation is under control.

After Blame Game, Siddaramaiah’s Warning On Karnataka Alliance

August 26, 2019 by Nasheman

The Karnataka government collapsed last month after failing a trust vote brought about by the resignation of 16 coalition lawmakers.

After Blame Game, Siddaramaiah's Warning On Karnataka Alliance

Siddaramaiah said he didn’t object HD Kumaraswamy becoming Chief Minister

BENGALURU: Congress-JDS leaders trade blame over government collapse Alliance government was formed last year after Karnataka elections
Deve Gowda said wrong move to make HD Kumaraswamy chief minister

The Congress-Janata Dal Secular (JDS) alliance in Karnataka is all but over, with top leaders of the two parties trading blame for the collapse of their year-old government last month. After JDS leader and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda targeted Siddaramaiah and accused him of precipitating the fall of their government, the Congress leader hit back.

The Congress leader said that he supported HD Kumaraswamy’s name for the chief ministerial post to save the opposition, which, he alleged, was under threat from the BJP.

View image on Twitter

“Only HD Deve Gowda and his sons – HD Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna are responsible for the failure of our coalition,” Mr Siddaramaiah said.

The JDS and the Congress had stitched an alliance last year after the Karnataka assembly election to prevent the BJP — which was the single-largest party — from forming the government. JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy became the Chief Minister despite his party winning only 37 seats.

The fragile alliance, however, won only a couple of seats out of 28 in the general election earlier this year. Within months of the polls, the state government collapsed after failing a trust vote brought about by the resignation of 16 coalition lawmakers.

The BJP’s BS Yeddiyurappa later formed the government, assuming the Chief Minister’s position.

“A communal party was/is at the helm of affairs in our country. The central government was/is trying to curtail opposition. There was an urgent need to protect the constitution, democracy and the secular fabric. For the same reason, I did not object when HD Kumaraswamy was made the Chief Minister of Karnataka,” Mr Siddaramaiah said.

“In spite of this, HD Deve Gowda has blamed me for the downfall of coalition government when he gave an interview to an English newspaper. Only HD Deve Gowda, HD Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna are responsible for the failure of our coalition,” he added.

On Thursday, Mr Deve Gowda, 86, said the Congress had been “wrong” in making his son, HD Kumaraswamy, the Chief Minister without consulting Mr Siddaramaiah.

“I have clearly said that without taking Siddaramaiah, who was Chief Minister for five years, into confidence Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi all of a sudden came and said HD Kumaraswamy is the next Chief Minister, it was their wrong decision,” the former Prime Minister said.

PV Sindhu wins historic gold in BWF World Championships final

August 26, 2019 by Nasheman

After two near misses & two bronze, the on-court vivisection of Japanese Okuhara in 37 minutes for maiden World C’ship gold heralds a new dawn for Sindhu

Gold-medallist PV Sindhu after winning her women's singles final match against Japan's Nozomi Okuhara at the BWF Badminton World Championships in the St. Jakobshalle in Basel.

CHENNAI : Thirty-seven minutes of mayhem, destruction, and sheer, unbridled power in its most visceral form. Thirty seven minutes of PV Sindhu reminding the world why she considers BWF World Championships her playground. Thirty seven minutes of Sindhu’s greatest hits being played on a loop as she scripted history by becoming the first Indian world champion in the sport.

It was so one-sided — a final scoreline of 21-7, 21-7 — that Sindhu could have played the majority of the final with one hand tied behind her back. Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, World No 4 with a medal haul to rival Sindhu, didn’t stand a chance.  If the 2017 final between these two went down in history because of the brilliance and endurance of both (it finished 21-19, 20-22, 22-20 in Okuhara’s favour), this will be remembered for the way Sindhu dismantled Okuhara. The match ended the only way it could: Okuhara on all fours, Sindhu standing tall.

Her constant peppering of Okuhara’s body with smashes was reminiscent of a fast-bowler torturing a tail-ender with chin music. And the way she moved the Japanese from flank to flank was like watching a master puppeteer at work. What really did work in the Indian’s favour was her ability to keep plugging away without taking her foot off the gas.

She did not allow Okuhara to breathe. A prime example of that was the way Sindhu reacted whenever Okuhara committed an unforced error. She would rush to the net, pick up the shuttle and be ready to serve. In the 2017 and 2018 finals, she let her opponents come to the net and send the shuttle to her side of the court — a common badminton etiquette.

Another slight tweak was her ability to shorten points. Whenever rallies were threatening to develop, she used her height to snufff them out. Significantly, not a single rally went beyond 30 shots, a far cry from the 73-shot one these two played in the 2017 final. In all, they played 56 rallies, with Sindhu winning 42.

Each winner was a dagger that pierced Okuhara usually resolute defense. The last, a smash to the left of Okuhara that made her fall to her knees, signalled the dawn of a new era. It’s been a long time coming — bronze in 2013, another in 2014, and then two silver in 2017 and 2018. This gold, completes the set. Once the supporting cast for four years, and now the lead actor in just 37 minutes.
