The Government of BS Yeddyurappa sailed through the trust vote in the Karnataka assembly today as the majority mark slid to 105 after the disqualification of 16 rebel lawmakers of the earlier Congress-Janata Dal Secular coalition.
 The BJP came to power in the state after the Congress and the Janata Dal Secular coalition crashed in the trust vote held last week after 16 rebels quit and two Independent lawmakers switched sides.  
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday won a confidence motion he moved in a special Assembly session to prove his government’s majority.He won the floor test through a voice vote.
Yediyurappa,who took oath as Chief minister on Friday, said the administrative machinery under the previous government had collapsed and he would prioritise bringing it back.
KR Ramesh Kumar Assembly Speaker Defending his decision to disqualify 17 rebel MLAS,who quit as Assembly Speaker Monday,rued that the 10th Schedule of the Constitution dealing with the anti-defection law failed to achieve the intended goals and stressed for a relook into it.Kumar, whose tenure as Speaker spanned for 14 months and four days, said electoral reforms were the need of the hour.The root cause of corruption in public life in the country is electoral system.There is a need for electoral reforms.Speaking about eradicating corruption without electoral reforms will only be a hollow intellectual talk without any commitment.He delivered his final speech in the assembly as Speaker after the three-day old BJP government headed by BS Yediyurappa proved its majority in the truncated state Assembly winning the confidence motion by a voice vote.He announced his resignation, amid reports that the BJP was mulling moving a no-confidence motion against him.He insisted that the House should pressure the Centre to initiate measures for electoral reforms.He requested assemblies of all state governments to pass resolutions and build pressure on the Centre to strengthen the anti-defection law.His appeal came against the backdrop of 17 MLAs of the ruling coalition of Congress and the JD(S) tendering their resignation,leading to political turmoil and culminating in its collapse.Treating their conduct questionable,Kumar disqualified them ahead of the trust vote sought by Yediyurappa.On the occasion,he urged political parties to behave in a mannerthat democratic values are not diminished.In this regard, he asked politicians to never advance their personal and family interest and destroy the political parties they belong to.Kumar cautioned Yediyurappa to be careful with people surrounding him and reminded him that he got the second chance for a reason which he should use to leave an indelible mark on the people of the state.He also sought a relook at the Representation of the People Act and the Lokayukta Act.On the Lokayukta Act, Kumar wondered why there was no clause to explain what would happen if a public servant refused to provide details of assets and liabilities.Further he sought to know why the election commission never orders an inquiry when someone declares massive assets to find out where the money came from.Once the affidavit is filed,it should be sent to the Enforcement Directorate and an inquiry should happen. Every detail should be laid bare before the people.Then only the democracy will survive in this country.Then only,it will give relief to the citizens of this country,finally Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar resigned from his post following the trust vote,saying he had tried to maintain the dignity of office to the best of my ability. Kumar announced his resignation soon after Yediyurappa won the one-line confidence motion and the House passed the Appropriation Bill. He submitted his resignation to Deputy Speaker Krishna Reddy.
A day ahead of the trust vote, the speaker had disqualified 14 MLAs,11 from Congress and three from Janata Dal (Secular) till the end of the current session in 2023.This brought the total number of MLAs who had been disqualified to 17. After the disqualifications,the strength of the House is 208.The BJP has 105 MLAs, just enough to have a majority.

Ahead of the confidence motion,Congress leader Siddaramaiah claimed that the Yediyurappa-led government was unconstitutional and immoral and did not have the mandate of the people.Where is the mandate in your favour? he asked. Yediyurappa has become the Chief Minister with just 105 members.Let us see how long you will be the Chief Minister.I want you to be Chief Minister for the full term but I do not think you will be able to complete it the term.Continuing his criticism of the Chief Minister after the floor test,Siddaramaiah said the BJP government would not last the full term as it was dependent on those who had lost their morals.When BS Yediyurappa took the oath,halfway mark was 111 but how on earth did they show numbers to the governor?the Congress leader tweeted.BS Yediyurappa has taken oath for four times but he lacked numbers in all instances.He is like a ‘crony capitalist’ who manufacturers numbers in a way that is harmful for a democratic nation.The Congress leader thanked the Speaker, saying “his honest decisions has set an example in the country showing how a speaker should conduct himself.
The state Congress unit also lashed out at Yediyurappa,alleging that his expertise in horse-trading and resort politics had made him the Chief Minister.Operation Kamala may have won him the trust vote today, but he does not have the trust of the people of Karnataka,” the party added.
Yediyurappa also addressed the House before the floor test, saying that when Siddaramaiah or Kumaraswamy were Chief Minister the BJP did not indulge in vindictive politics.Administration has failed and we’ll set it right,the chief minister said. I assure the House that we won’t indulge in vindictive politics either.I believe in forget and forgive.He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Union Home Minister Amit Shah,and BJP Working President JP Nadda.
After the trust vote, the Assembly passed the Finance Bill (Appropriation Bill), seeking a vote on account for three months.Yediyurappa said that the bill needed to be passed urgently as it would have been difficult to even pay salaries of government employees had it remained stuck.
Two rebel Karnataka Congress leaders on Monday moved the Supreme Court:
Seeking quashing of Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar’s decision to disqualify them from the Assembly.Kumar, meanwhile, announced his resignation soon after newly appointed Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa won the confidence motion by a voice vote.
Seeking quashing of the July 25 order of the Speaker, which said the MLAs have incurred disqualification in terms of the tenth schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law),Rebel Congress leaders Ramesh Jharkhiholi and Mahesh Kumathalli described the decision taken by Kumar as illegal,arbitrary and mala fide exercise of his power.
Advocate Shubranshu Padhi, who had filed the petition on behalf of the disqualified MLAs, told media persons that a second petition by independent MLA R Shanker, who was also disqualified, is likely to be filed on Tuesday.Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi is likely to mention the plea moved by Jharkhiholi and Kumathalli for early hearing.
Karnataka assembly session adjourned:
The Karnataka assembly session, which witnessed Chief Minister Yediyurappa winning the trust vote, has been adjourned till 12 noon on Tuesday. The new Speaker will be nominated on Tuesday.
One stage is over, BJP has won the floor test.Next course is cabinet expansion.Our senior leaders both at the state and the Centre will sit together and decide on it at the earliest,senior BJP leader and MLA Suresh Kumar said.Speaking to reporters here, he said,I think it should be over by this weekend.Yediyurappa alone was sworn in as Chief Minister on Friday,three days after the collapse of the Congress-JDS coalition ministry following rebellion by a section of the ruling combine MLAs.The appointment of new Speaker will be decided in a day or two as the post cannot be kept vacant,Suresh Kumar, who is also the BJP spokesperson said. He, however, brushed aside speculations of him being considered for the job,stating that no body has spoken to me about that he added.
BJP MLA KG Bopaiah likely to apply for Speaker post:
Since KR Ramesh Kumar resigned as the Karnataka Speaker, BJP MLA KG Bopaiah, according to the reports, is likely to file a nomination on Tuesday for the Speaker’s post. KG Boaiah has been the Karnataka Speaker earlier.

Yediyurappa’s government has replaced the 14-month-old government of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) alliance,which collapsed last week.In a trust vote earlier called by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, 99 MLAs voted for the coalition while the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 105 votes. Kumaraswamy resigned after the floor test concluded.
Seventeen rebel MLAs (Congress-14 and JDS-3) had skipped the Assembly session during the trust vote proceedings on July 23, bringing down the Kumaraswamy government which lost the confidence motion with 99 members voting in favour and 105 against it.

Woman Spent Months Battling Stomach Virus. It Turned To Be Rare Cancer

The average length of survival for sarcomatoid kidney cancer is about eight months.

Kathy Hipsher was having a horrible year.

She spent months battling a vicious stomach virus, followed by lingering nausea and pain that left her subsisting on a bland diet consisting largely of Cream of Wheat and applesauce. Her gut problems were accompanied by days of fatigue so extreme that at times she could barely drag herself up the stairs of her Bellevue, Idaho, home.

In October 2016, just as Hipsher was recovering, the 45-year-old sign-language interpreter and Grand Canyon river guide suddenly confronted a new and alarming symptom: visible blood in her urine.

For the next 13 months she underwent numerous tests conducted by specialists who were unable to determine what was causing the bleeding.

“Maybe you’re just someone with blood in their urine,” Hipsher remembers a urologist saying a year after the problem first appeared.

Less than a month after that October 2017 pronouncement, Hipsher learned the reason for the bleeding. A final diagnosis would take nearly three more months.

“It was really difficult to keep persevering,” said Hipsher, whose ordeal was complicated by recurrent digestive problems and compounded by distance. Seeing specialists sometimes meant a five-hour round-trip drive from her home outside Ketchum to Boise.

But the most frustrating part, said Hipsher who has worked in a medical clinic, was trying to convince skeptical doctors that her continuing symptoms seemed to indicate something serious. One flatly told her she was “too young” for the disease with which she was ultimately diagnosed.

In October 2016, Hipsher was preparing to lead a 16-day river trip when she noticed that her urine was tinged with pink.

“I thought, ‘That’s weird.’ I hadn’t eaten beets,” which could cause the temporary discoloration of urine known as beeturia, Hipsher recalled. She had no pain or other symptoms and had never experienced chronic urinary tract infections, which can cause visible blood in the urine known as gross hematuria.

A urinalysis performed the following day, after the bleeding was no longer visible, confirmed the presence of red blood cells and protein in her urine. Proteinuria can be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease, none of which applied to Hipsher. Her primary care physician ordered a CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis and referred her to a urologist.

The CT scan revealed the presence of two tiny, non-obstructing kidney stones, neither in a problematic location. The radiologist also noted atrophy on the upper portion of her left kidney, which he said “most likely represents a chronic injury.” The urologist performed a cystoscopy, a test that inspects the bladder; it was normal. The doctor suggested that Hipsher drink more fluids, which could help stave off a future kidney stone attack.

After the bleeding recurred, Hipsher consulted a second urologist, who sent her to a kidney specialist.

The nephrologist suggested that the intermittent bleeding might be caused by IgA nephropathy, a disease that damages the filters inside the kidneys and can occur after an illness.

The nephrologist advised continued monitoring of Hipsher’s kidneys, which were functioning normally. He was reluctant, for reasons Hipsher said he never articulated, to perform a kidney biopsy, which could definitively determine whether IgA nephropathy was the problem.

In May 2017, Hipsher decided she needed a new nephrologist. By now the bleeding was a daily occurrence.

The second nephrologist scheduled a needle biopsy for the following month. The test ruled out IgA nephropathy and failed to find anything that would explain the bleeding. Sometimes no cause can be found and the condition is labeled idiopathic hematuria.

Hipsher was not reassured; her urine was sometimes bright red. She decided she needed out-of-state expertise, so she called a prominent medical center and wangled an appointment. In July, she spent four days undergoing an extensive nephrology work-up.

Records describe her as “very healthy-appearing” and noted her “excellent outside” work-up. A pathologist reviewed the CT scan performed nine months earlier, but did not repeat it.

Doctors came to the same conclusion. They couldn’t find an explanation for her bleeding, nor did they uncover anything of concern.

When Hipsher asked the nephrologist if he could rule out cancer, she remembers he brushed it aside. The first kidney specialist had told her she was “too young” for kidney cancer.

For the next few months, Hipsher concentrated on her recurring and difficult to treat stomach problems, which were attributed to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, a condition that can cause nausea, diarrhea and fatigue, and later a parasitic infection. The primary care doctor she had been seeing told Hipsher she was stumped and sent her to Thomas Archie, a family medicine specialist.

“She was referred to me because her case was confusing, and I do a lot of weird cases,” said Archie, whose practice combines conventional Western medicine and alternative practices, including the use of Chinese herbs and acupuncture.

In October, she returned to the second urologist to request a CT scan for the worsening bleeding, which included what appeared to be blood clots. The doctor, she said, balked.

“I wouldn’t radiate you again,” she remembers the specialist saying, adding “we’re not going to worry about” the blood.

When Hipsher persisted, the urologist agreed to consult a colleague in Boise to see if a CT scan was advisable.

Two weeks later, the urologist ordered the scan to check for an abnormal tangle of blood vessels known as an arteriovenous malformation, which can sometimes cause bleeding.

The imaging test revealed something quite different: a grape-sized mass on Hipsher’s left kidney, in the same location where the atrophy had been noted 13 months earlier. The urologist, who referred Hipsher to a surgical oncologist in Boise, told her the 2.5 centimeter tumor might be benign.

Hipsher was certain it was not. The surgical oncologist agreed and told her it was probably malignant.

A week before Christmas, the surgeon removed the portion of Hipsher’s left kidney that contained the tumor, which he characterized as unlike anything he had seen.

Because of its unusual nature, pathology samples were sent to the Johns Hopkins Medical Laboratory in Baltimore for analysis.

A few weeks later, in early January 2018, Archie gave Hipsher the devastating news. She had a rare – and highly aggressive – disease called sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma.

Sarcomatoid cancer, which typically strikes men over 60, is characterized by poorly differentiated cells resembling a sarcoma, cancer that develops in tissue such as blood vessels or in bones. The percentage of differentiation reflects the tumor’s aggressiveness: the higher the percentage, the more aggressive the tumor.

Hipsher’s tumor was 100% sarcomatoid. The average length of survival for sarcomatoid kidney cancer is about eight months.

Pathologists were unable to determine whether the cancer had originated in Hipsher’s kidney or in her bladder or ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. (Blood in the urine and fatigue are common symptoms of kidney cancer.)

Hipsher was devastated – but not surprised.

“I’d known it was cancer deep down in my bones for a while,” she said. “I’m not sure how to explain it.” One of her aunts had been diagnosed with a rare sarcoma at age 53. Another died a month after being diagnosed with colon cancer. For the preceding two years, doctors had told her they couldn’t determine the reason for her double-digit weight loss and severe abdominal pain.

Archie said that doctors went back and examined Hipsher’s 2016 CT scan to see whether the tumor had been missed; he said no sign was found. “I think maybe the imaging was done at such an early stage that you can’t even see it,” he said.

Had Hipsher undergone a CT scan six months or so after the bleeding started, Archie said, the tumor might have been visible.

Hipsher regrets she didn’t push for a second CT scan sooner.

“What I definitely wish I had done was bring in pictures or a sample of bloody urine early on,” she said. “Somehow I think doctors believe patients when there is something visible or tangible, rather than just our words.”

The pathology report from Hopkins did contain some good news: the tumor was small and appeared to be confined to her left kidney. Most sarcomatoid tumors are much larger and have metastasized widely when they are discovered. A PET scan showed no sign of disease.

CT scans performed three and six months after surgery, while Hipsher was undergoing complex tests for genetic mutations that could guide future treatment, were clean. And her lab tests were normal.

Because her cancer is rare, Archie suggested that Hipsher seek a consultation at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and helped arrange a visit.

In August 2018, Hipsher and her husband, Mike, flew to Texas. She had received the standard first-line treatment – surgery – but the Houston oncologist told her that too much time had elapsed for chemotherapy or immunotherapy, sometimes used after surgery to prevent a recurrence.

“At this time we believe the risks of treatment outweigh the potential benefits,” one oncologist wrote.

MD Anderson specialists recommended that Hipsher undergo active surveillance, which includes CT scans and lab tests every three months.

If her cancer recurs, doctors say they expect she would be treated with immunotherapy drugs that have shown promise in treating sarcomatoid tumors.

Hipsher opted to receive treatment in Houston. So far, the news has been good: she remains cancer-free. Her next visit is scheduled for mid-August.

The couple live frugally and have what Hipsher characterizes as excellent health insurance. She is “stunningly grateful” to be able to afford the cost of travel and unreimbursed medical expenses, which last year totaled $21,000. “I really feel for the people for whom such a thing isn’t even an option,” she said.

Although she is still coming to terms with what has happened, Hipsher said she has largely succeeded in moving beyond the dismal statistics and feels generally optimistic. “It’s been hardest to watch what this has meant for my husband,” she said, adding that he has been her rock.

With the help of a therapist, Hipsher said she has found “a metaphor to live by: Live life like a river trip. You pack and plan and prepare the best you can. And even though you don’t know everything that will happen downstream, you launch.”

India were knocked out of the World Cup 2019 in the semi-finals after losing to New Zealand in a rain-marred match, which was played over two days. Even though India lost just one match in the league stage and finished as table-toppers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications for the post of head coach and other support staff soon after the World Cup. Former India all-rounder Robin Singh, who has reportedly applied for the post of head coach, took a dig at current coach Ravi Shastri, saying India “lost in the semi-finals of two successive ODI World Cups” under his coaching.

“Under the current coach, India has lost in the semi-finals of two successive ODI World Cups, and in the last four stage of the World Twenty20 championship as well. Now is the time to prepare for the 2023 World Cup and a change could be good for the side

Shastri, along with the other support staff, has been given a 45-day extensionfollowing the World Cup in the UK.

On July 16, the BCCI invited applications for the post of head coach, batting coach, bowling coach, fielding coach, physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach and administrative manager.

“The current coaching staff of Team India (Senior Men) will get an automatic entry in the recruitment process,” the BCCI said in a release.

“Pertinent to note, that the decision of the BCCI for the said position, will remain final and binding,” the release, issued by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), added further.

The last date of application is July 30, 2019, until 5 PM IST.

Azam Khan had claimed his remarks were misinterpreted.

Samajwadi lawmaker Azam Khan, whose sexist remarks in parliament against Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker has evoked outrage, apologised to Rama Devi today. The Deputy Speaker, who earlier declared that she would never forgive him, today said his remark has “hurt both women and men in India”.

“He will not understand this. He has acquired really bad habits… I have not come here to hear such comments,” she said.

The Samajwadi Party lawmaker’s sexist remarks – made during Thursday’s debate on a bill to ban Triple Talaq – were so offensive that they were immediately expunged from the house records.  

Azam Khan — who made headlines with his sexist comments more than once — had claimed his remarks were misinterpreted.

“Sister, I have had a long political career, it is not possible for me to say anything bad. If there is a single unparliamentary word in what I said, then I declare my resignation from parliament,” he had told Rama Devi amid cries of “shame” from the lawmakers.

He, however, was vigorously criticised by colleagues across the board.

The BJP’s Sushma Swaraj said he crossed “all limits of decency” and suffered from “mental perversion”.

“This is an abominable act, I appeal to you for exemplary action,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had told Speaker Om Prakash Birla.

“If Azam Khan had apologized for his indecent statement on the same day, I would have forgiven him. He even walked off on Thursday after making this comment – adding insult to injury,” Rama Devi had said.

“I will tell the Speaker that Azam Khan has not only embarrassed Rama Devi, but women across the country have been insulted. I will tell the Speaker Om Birla that Azam Khan needs to be given such exemplary punishment that is remembered for generations to come,” she had added.

NEW DELHI: 

The Delhi government has directed all schools in the national capital to allow random checking by police personnel around their premises during the period of change of shift or closing of school.

The schools have also been asked to submit a report regarding the presence of police personnel or police van. “The Task Force on Women Safety in Delhi has been holding meetings to ensure that actionable measures for women safety are taken. In one of the meetings, it had been decided that Delhi Police should intensify random checking around schools, especially at time of change of shift or closing of school.

“In a meeting held recently to review the progress on various action points relating to the recommendations of the Task Force, it had been decided that all schools under the Directorate of Education (DoE) must ascertain as to whether these checking are taking place or not,” a senior DoE official said.

“It has accordingly been decided that, all principals of government and private schools shall ascertain the presence of a police personnel or mobile police van around school premises during the period of change of shift or closing of school. Schools are also required to submit a report in this regard,” the official added.

The DoE has also directed that in case of schools running in double shift, principals of both the shifts of the school in consultation and coordination with each other shall depute 2 to 3 teachers for 15 minutes at the gate of school before the change of the shift and 15 minutes after closing.

Senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon took oath as governor of Madhya Pradesh on Monday at a function in Raj Bhawan in Bhopal.

Prior to this appointment, Lalji Tandon, 84, served as the governor of Bihar. Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha administered the oath of office to Lalji Tandon in the presence of Chief Minister Kamal Nath, state ministers and bureaucrats,a Raj Bhawan Official said.

A man was beaten up by a mob in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district on the suspicion of being a child-lifter, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred at the Tasati tea garden on Sunday evening when locals saw a person moving suspiciously in the area, an officer of Falakata police station said.

“Over 250 people had beaten up the man with fists and also kicked him. He was seriously injured when we recovered him from the mob,” the officer said.

The man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was declared brought dead at the Birpara hospital, hospital sources said.

“Seventeen people have been arrested in connection with the incident and they will be produced at the court on Monday. Further investigation is on,” senior police officer Nagendra Nath Tripathi said.

The incident comes a week after two people were beaten up on suspicion of being child-lifters in separate incidents in the district last Sunday.

NEW DELHI: 

The Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear on Friday the plea of fugitive economic offender Vijay Mallya challenging the confiscation of properties belonging to the companies owned by him and his family members.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took note of the submission of F S Nariman, appearing for Vijay Mallya, that the fresh plea be heard along with the pending one on the legality of the law and the action to confiscate the properties. The senior lawyer sought adjournment of hearing on the petition questioning the confiscation of properties.

The bench has now posted the matter for hearing on August 2.

Vijay Mallya, who is currently in the UK, has been charged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of defaulting on bank loans to the tune of Rs.9,000 crore. He is also facing an extradition trial in UK.

So how will you define a “normal” human behavior? And what are the criteria to be followed by a person that he/she can be considered as “normal”? In the past there were films like My Name Is Khan in the year 2010, Taare Zameen Par in the year 2007) etc. wherein the protagonists’ behavior were such that they stood out & were even ostracized. But still they were special & earned respect in society after a long struggle. And now, writer Kanika Dhillon & director Prakash Kovelamudi have come up with Judgementall Hai Kya that tackles these issues but unlike the aforementioned films, this flick goes into an unconventional zone with even a murder occurring in the narrative.

The scripted scenario of Judgementall Hai Kya reveals the story of a woman with mental issues trying to solve a supposed crime. Bobby Batliwala Grewal (Kangana Ranaut) is an orphan who has lost her parents at a young age. She is partly responsible for their demise. Bobby Batliwala Grewal grows up as a disturbed individual & her grandfather (Lalit Behl) takes care of her. She stays separately from him & works as a dubbing artiste for South Indian films. She is on medication for her mental condition but she doesn’t consume her pills. She is in a relationship of sorts with Varun (Hussain Dalal) who is desperate to get physical with her. But she doesn’t give him the opportunity. At this point, Bobby Batliwala Grewal gets a new tenant named Keshav (Rajkummar Rao) & his wife Meena (Amyra Dastur). Both are deeply in love with each other. Bobby Batliwala Grewal spies on them & she starts to imagine herself with Keshav. However, she also gets intrigued since Keshav seems mysterious. In front of Meena, he pretends to be a non-smoker & a vegetarian. But Bobby Batliwala Grewal catches him smoking heavily & also relishing chicken dishes. She starts to trouble them & then it reaches a point where Keshav & Meena decide to move to another place. Before that can happen, a gas explosion occurs in their kitchen & Meena dies. The cops (Satish Kaushik & Brijendra Kala) begin their investigation. Bobby makes it categorically clear to them that Keshav has murdered Meena but doesn’t have concrete proof. The police officers interrogate Kehsav as well but realize it was a case of accidental death. Hence, they decide to close the case. An enraged Bobby Batliwala Grewal assaults Keshav & she’s sent to a mental asylum for a brief period of time. 2 years later, Bobby Batliwala Grewal seems to be in control. She’s started regular medication & her grandfather sends her to her cousin Megha’s (Amrita Puri) place in London to help in a stage production on Ramayana. All is going fine when Bobby Batliwala Grewal gets a jolt when she spots Keshav also in London. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Kanika Dhillon’s story is unconventional & even quite promising & entertaining. Kanika Dhillon’s screenplay is interesting but in some parts, she falters. This is particularly in the 2ndhalf where the film goes into another zone & doesn’t seem convincing. She however raises some interesting points on the idea of “normal” & even draws parallel with Ramayana. Only if all these things had come together well, the impact would have been manifold. Kanika Dhillon’s dialogues suit the film, especially the ones mouthed by Kangana Ranaut.

Prakash Kovelamudi’s direction is appropriate & he uses his technical knowledge well. The film is very stylishly narrated which goes with its theme & also the title. In a few scenes, he shows his brilliance but goes over the top in the 2nd half’s pre-climax scenario especially. Also, a few scenes might seem difficult to digest, particularly the scene where Bobby Batliwala Grewal confronts Keshav. He was treading line with this film & sadly enough, he trips at places & this affects the impact of his role.

Judgementall Hai Kya’s intro scene shows the disturbed childhood of Bobby Batliwal Grewal in a brief & concise manner. Once She grows up, it takes a while however to get in the film’s flow. This is because the character is unconventional & unlike anything that one has seen in Bollywood films. Hence Kangana Ranaut’s mannerisms, actions, way of living life etc. are not exactly “normal”. Things get interesting once Keshav & Meena arrive to reside at her place as tenants. Keshav also seems mysterious & the scene where he is fixing the fuse at midnight is quite nicely done. The Lonavala sequence also is funny. But it’s when Meena passes away that things begin to heat up. The intermission point is a shocker. Post-interval, the interest level is maintained with some unexpected developments. But this is also the point where bizarre also things start happening in the film. One can argue even the 1st half had its share of bizarre stuff but in the 2nd half, the makers go completely overboard. The film is still unpredictable but the theme & execution will restrict its audience to only multiplexes of the urban areas.

The songs do not really make an impact. The title song stands out but comes at a time when the film turns very bizarre. “Kis Raste Hai Jana” is okay. “Wakhra Swag” appears during the end credits. Daniel B George’s background score however is way better & is zany just like the film’s theme.

Pankaj Kumar’s cinematography is conventional & yet works in a film like this. Sheetal Sharma’s costumes are quite quirky especially the ones worn by Kangana Ranaut & she looks great. In fact, costumes add a lot to her character. Ravi Shrivastav’s production design is praiseworthy, especially for the Ramayana play. After’s VFX is average & moreover the cockroach shots could have been more realistic. Shweta Venkat’s editing (with additional editing by Prashanth Ramachandran & Shieeba Sehgal) is fine. The duration of the film is just 116 minutes & that’s certainly a plus point.

Performance wise, Kangana Ranaut nails the part. This was probably her most challenging part yet & she delivers the goods as per expectations. Any other actress in her place would have to put a lot of effort & it might have made her performance mechanical. But Kangana Ranaut just slips into the part with perfect ease & takes it to another level. Rajkummar Rao also gets to shine. He’s too good as the mysterious Keshav. But he’s at his best in these 2 scenes wherein he begs Bobby Batliwala Grewal to spare him & his wife. Amyra Dastur is cute & enacts the supporting part well. The same goes for Amrita Puri. Satish Kaushik & Brijendra Kala is apt for their respective roles. Hussain Dalal is a talent to watch out for. He’s very funny & adds a lot to the film. Jimmy Sheirgill as Shridhar is endearing in the special appearance. Lalit Behl is decent. Kanika Dhillon as Sita, also the writer of the film, is stunning & gets to play a fine part in the film.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Judgementall Hai Kya is a well made film with powerful performances from both Kangana Ranaut & Rajkummar Rao.

At the box office turnstiles, it will cater mainly to the urban multiplex frequenting audience. Period!

Comedy is an established genre in Bollywood. Since the audiences are now ready for thehatke stuffs, filmmakers are constantly trying to push the boundaries in the existing genres too. This Friday coincidentally sees the release of 2 such films, although both the movies are as different as chalk & cheese. While Judgementall Hai Kya has violent undertones, the other film, Arjun Patiala, is like a spoof on comedy, on the lines of famous Hollywood films like Scary Movie & Deadpool. Bollywood has rarely made such films & one recent film in this space was Welcome To New York (2018). It was a huge failure in all respects & now its lead actor Diljit Dosanjh appears in another comedy film, Arjun Patiala.

So the scripted scenario of Arjun Patiala tells about a cop trying to achieve a crime free district. A struggling director (Abhishek Banerjee) meets a rich 3rd generation producer (Pankaj Tripathi). After ensuring that the director has put all the necessary “ingredients” needed for a masala entertainer, the producer allows the narration of the script. The director then starts to tell his story, that of a police officer named Arjun Patiala (Diljit Dosanjh). He becomes a sub-inspector through sports quota & he is posted at Ferozpur Police Station in Punjab. Within a few days, he falls for Ritu Randhawa (Kriti Sanon), an honest reporter working for Tezz News Channel. He is also visited by his senior, DSP Gill (Ronit Roy). Arjun looks up to him since childhood & he is the reason why he decided to be a cop. DSP Gill shares with him his dream of making Ferozpur a crime free district. Ritu Randhawa meanwhile helps Arjun Patiala in sharing the list of baddies in the area. There’s Baldev Rana (Amit Mehra) who is so brash that he even beats up police officers if they come in his way, Sukool (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) who runs a brick kiln, his brother Anda (Sumit Gulati) & finally Dilbaug Singh (Himanshu Kohli) who runs his business from jail & also has haemoglobin problems. Arjun Patiala devises a plan, he generates a gang war between them, hoping that they’ll all kill each other & hence DSP Gill’s dream will be achieved. However, there’s also MLA Prapti Makkad (Seema Pahwa) who seems to be the biggest villain of all & also has ulterior motives of her own. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Ritesh Shah & Sandeep Leyzell’s story is outdated. The writers had some good ideas but fail to put it together on paper. Ritesh Shah & Sandeep Leyzell’s screenplay is shockingly horrible. It’s like an apology of a script. The attempt to make a spoof comedy & taking a dig at conventional Bollywood films is something that could have paid dividends. They also had some very funny characters & any other worthy writer would have made a complete laugh riot. Alas, the writers of the film let these characters go waste. They add some dry & beaten to death moments & twists. In fact, its bewildering how this script got approved in the 1st ever place. Ritesh Shah & Sandeep Leyzell’s dialogues are also dry & fail to evoke any laughter.

Rohit Jugraj’s direction is smooth for most places but with such a poor script, there isn’t much he could have done. At a few places however, he rushes through the film & this was avoidable. For instance, it’s never properly established why Sukool agrees to bump off other villains in the district. A few more minutes should have been spent in establishing the tensions between the varied gangs. If Rohit Jugraj had done the needful, the end result would have been better but still, the film would have emerged as a total disappointment as the content itself is not worth it.

So Arjun Patiala begins on a great note. The manner in which the producer & the director converse over the “masala” script is interesting. The opening credits sequence, a spoof on James Bond style of films, is witty. But soon, one realizes there’s nothing much happening in the film. Yes, there are a bunch of villains but they are not utilized properly. In fact, after a point, the film stops being funny. A few scenes are interesting here & there like Sukool assassinating Baldev Rana or the way a romance blooms between Arjun Patiala & Ritu Randhawa. But these are few & too far between. The twist in the tale in the pre-climax scenario is something that one can see from miles away. The grand finale is also hardly funny & reeks of lazy writing.

Sachin-Jigar’s music is nothing compared to their previous works. “Main Deewana Tera” has the chartbuster feel but doesn’t have a long shelf life. “Crazy Habibi vs Decent Munda” is situational. “Dil Todeya” & “Sachiya Mohabbatan” are okay. “Sip Sip” is played during the end credits. Ketan Sodha’s background score is totally & disapprovingly theatrical.

Sudip Sengupta’s cinematography is fine. Parijat Poddar & Shekhar Ujjainwal’s production design is a bit television show like. Vikram Dahiya’s action is sans any gore. Veena Kapur Ee’s costumes are appealing, especially the ones worn by Kriti Sanon. Huzefa Lokhandwala’s editing is too quick at places.

Diljit Dosanjh is apt as the cute & the naughty police officer. He genuinely plays his part & even tries to rise above the script. Varun Sharma (Onida Singh) is likeable although he’s repeating himself now. Kriti Sanon is also sincere & plays the entertaining part well. The sequence where she narrates her tragic part is where she gives her best. Sadly enough, the film makers spoil the show with an animated flashback running below on the screen & it takes away the impact of her performance too. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is the best among the villains. He totally shines & it’s sad that such a cool villain won’t get his due to the bad script. Ronit Roy fits the part to the T. Seema Pahwa is decent. Amit Mehra, Himanshu Kohli & Sumit Gulati get no scope. Biswapati Sarkar as the Editor of the Tezz News Channel is appropriate. Ritesh Shah as Arjun’s father & the actor playing her mother are poor. Sunny Leone as Baby is sizzling. Pankaj Tripathi & Abhishek Banerjee are the funniest guys in the film.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Arjun Patiala is a shockingly poor fare, riddled with an outdated & absolutely tragic script.

At the box office, it will be rejected outright by the cine goers.
