HC asks State to tell proposed steps to clean river Cauvery

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

In its objections, the State said that in Bhagamandala village, there are about 500 houses and about 40-50 houses situated close to river are generating sewage and is collected it in the soak pit.

Karnataka High Court

BENGALURU: Observing that it is the constitutional duty of the State to protect environment and rivers from pollution, the Karnataka High Court on Friday asked the state Government to file its response explaining the proposed steps to clean Cauvery at Bhagamandala in Madikeri. Hearing the public interest litigation filed by S E Jayanth and others from Kodagu district, the division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice H T Narendra Prasad issued the direction to the State to explain the proposed action to be taken to clean the river in the additional objections.

The court also indicated that it will issue the directions if the state government is not accorded sanction for resuming work and to release the funds to ensure that the sewage water is not entering the river, as the same is pending before the government.

On March 9, 2018, the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu held a meeting with officials concerned and it was discussed that the Temple authorities have released Rs 5 lakh to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Underground Drainage Board to prepare action plan to ensure the sewage water system in Bhagamandala Grama Panchayat and does not join the river. In fact, action plan was prepared in 2014-15 by the Board and the cost of the project was Rs 4.51 crore as per the revised plan. But it was not materialised as same is pending before the government.

Referring this, the petitioner has prayed the court to issue directions to the authorities to ensure sewage system to be properly laid Bhagamandala to ensure no pollution is caused either by the sewage water or by solid waste disposal in surrounding radius of 2 kms around Triveni Sangama.

In its objections, the State said that in Bhagamandala village, there are about 500 houses and about 40-50 houses situated close to river are generating sewage and is collected it in the soak pit. There will not be any discharge from these houses and sewage would join the river during summer.

BENGALURU: Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has issued a notice to Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Zameer Ahmed Khan, in connection with the IMA Gold multi-crore fraud case. The ED has already provisionally attached properties worth Rs 209 crore belonging to IMA. On Friday, ED officials issued notice to the minister asking for his reply before July 5.

Speaking to reporters, Zameer confirmed that he had received the notice. “Is there anything wrong in issuing a notice? They are doing their job. I had sold a property to him (IMA founder Mohammed Mansoor Khan) and maybe that is why they have issued the notice. I will reply to it before July 5.”

Though the minister has admitted to receiving the notice, it is not yet known what clarifications the ED has sought from him. Mohammed Mansoor Khan has been absconding for more than 20 days now and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the government of Karnataka is investigating the case and is on the lookout for him.

Follow traffic rules, get honoured by Hyderabad police

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Rachakonda traffic police strongly believes this move will spread happiness among safe drivers as their honesty is recognised.

Traffic

HYDERABAD: Motorists following traffic rules in Hyderabad are set to be honoured with certificates by the city police under a novel initiative.

The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate here Thursday launched the programme “Patrol for Happy Driving” to mark the completion.

As part of the initiative launched by Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat, the traffic police will identify drivers who follow traffic rules as a habit and take safety measures in driving vehicles.

“So far the police have been trying to identify traffic violators and impose fines and to seize vehicles and so on.

Now as a token of recognition to the people following traffic rules, Rachakonda police launched a unique programme which is the only one-of-its-kind in India “Patrol for Happy Driving,” Bhagwat said.

Such drivers will be given stickers and certificates of appreciation.

Rachakonda traffic police strongly believes this move will spread happiness among safe drivers as their honesty is recognised, he said.

It is observed that as a result of providing awareness on following traffic rules many people have started taking safety measures like wearing helmet, using seat belt, giving proper signals from their vehicles and maintaining safe distance from other vehicles and so on, the top cop said.

After launching this programme, Bhagwat checked some vehicles and found one woman doctorand a senior citizen along with other autorickshaw and lorry drivers as safe drivers and pasted ‘Safe Driver’ stickers on their vehicles and honoured them with a certificate.

Henceforth, Rachakonda traffic police will identify 8000 safe drivers and they will be honoured with a sticker on their vehicle as a safe driver and a certificate as a token of their sincerity.

“The main aim of launching this programme is to encourage the law-abiding citizens by honouring them and bring changes among others to make them obey the law,” Bhagwat added.

Several Congress leaders quit to give Rahul Gandhi ‘free hand’ to choose new team

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Hours after Vivek Tankha quit as the party’s Chairman for Law and RTI cell, many others from Delhi, MP and Haryana too gave up their posts.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: A spate of resignations took place on Friday after Congress chief Rahul Gandhi asserted that he took the onus of the debacle in the Lok Sabha election and expressed unhappiness that senior leaders fail to own responsibility for the party’s poor performance.

Meanwhile, the party decided to appoint Kondagaon MLA Mohan Makran as the party chief in Chhattisgarh in place of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who had asked the party to relieve him from the duty as his hands are full.

More changes are expected as the party is expected to appoint new chief in Madhya Pradesh where Chief Minister Kamal Nath is leading the state unit.

The first to tender resignation was Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha, AICC Department chairman Law, RTI and HR, on late Thursday. Soon, over 120 party leaders, including AICC secretaries, working in-charges of Delhi and Telanaga, and other state office bearers, signed mass resignation letters.

“We all should submit our resignations for party positions and give Rahul ji a free hand to choose his team. I welcome Kamal Nath’s statement to that effect. I unequivocally submit my resignation as AICC Department chairman Law, RTI and HR. Party cannot afford a stalemate for too long,” Tanka tweeted.

“Rahul ji please make drastic changes to revive the party as a fighting force. You have the commitment and determination. Just cobble a good, acceptable and influential nationwide team. I am with you in all situations,” he added.

Rahul himself remains adamant on his decision to step down as the party chief. During a meeting with leaders from Haryana on Thursday, the Congress president said that he owns up the responsibility and would work for the party.

NEW DELHI: The issue of dangerous levels of air pollution was flagged by members in Lok Sabha. The government on Friday claimed that there has been nearly a 15 per cent decline in particulate matter 2.5 and 10 levels in Delhi in the last three years and that the number of days with ‘good air’ quality has also been on the rise.

Raising the issue Suresh Kodikunnil, Congress member from Kerala said that one out of every seven deaths in India is attributable to air pollution and asked if the government was aware of this.

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the government was aware of the situation and pointed out that vehicle pollution needs to be contained for better results.

“Vehicle pollution has to be contained immediately… We are giving out clean fuel in Delhi from this year and entire country from the coming year. The peripheral highways have been built completely in 4 years. 60,000 vehicles now don’t have to come to Delhi to pass through,” he replied.

Speaking further the minister said that Badarpur thermal power plant has been closed and State coordination committees have been created.

All polluting industries now have online monitors and that emission level reports have to be submitted by them every 15 minutes.

“We are part of the global solution… In Delhi, the problem started from 2007 but was addressed only in 2014,” he added.

Manoj Tiwari, a lawmaker from Delhi said that in the city, Ayushmann Yojana had been stopped by Delhi government and hence had fallen in the health index.

Minister Ashwini Choubey said that on September 23, Ayushman Bharat was implemented and that since then around 50 crore people have benefited from it.

THANE (MAHARASHTRA): An Ola cab driver was assaulted and almost lynched by some persons who also forced the victim to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’, officials said here on Friday.

While three accused have already been arrested and remanded in police custody till June 29, Mumbra Police are on the lookout for some more suspects in the incident that occurred last Saturday.

According to police, on June 22 night, the Ola cabbie from Mumbra, Faisal Usman Khan, 25, had gone to pick up some passengers from Diva on the far end of the Thane district, adjoining Mumbai.

En route, his vehicle broke down on the Agasan Road and he was trying to repair it with the parking lights blinking.

Suddenly, at least four-five persons, in a drunken state, came on two-wheelers and entered into a petty argument with Khan and started thrashing him, even as the scared passengers fled from the cab.

At one point, when he invoked the name of ‘allah’, the attackers realized that he belonged to a community and forced him to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

The injured and bleeding victim, in order to avoid further thrashing, obliged them by repeating ‘Jai Shri Ram’, and fell unconscious as they continued to beat him up.

Later, when he revived he was in the cab and his mobile phone was stolen, he said.

Later, he narrated the entire incident in a video clip which went viral, attracting condemnation from various quarters and coverage in the local media.

Mumbra Police swung into action and nabbed three persons from Diva – Jaideep Munde, Anil Suryawanshi and Mangesh Munde – and booked them under various sections of IPC.

G20 summit: China, Russia to work with India in order to eliminate terrorism

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

The trilateral meeting, Friday, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss global hot spots.

NEW DELHI: India secured significant victories at its trilateral meeting with China and Russia and the five BRICS nations, when in separate communiqués, the countries joined to emphatically reiterate India’s concerns over global terrorism while agreeing to work together to eliminate terror in all forms and manifestations and for closer policy coordination to eradicate its breeding grounds worldwide.

The trilateral meeting, Friday, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss global hot spots.

Modi said, “As the world’s leading economies, the exchange of views between us on the economic, political and global security situation is important and the tri-lateral meeting was a useful medium of discussion and coordination on major global issues.”

The above declaration in a joint communiqué of the 16th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the three countries on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan and later bolstered by the BRICS call to prevent terrorist actions from their territories and prevent financing of such networks, came as a significant gain for India in its push to isolate Pakistan, post Pulwama attacks.

The BRICS countries  — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — in its joint statement said, “We strongly condemn terrorist attacks, including against BRICS countries, in all forms and manifestations, wherever and by whomsoever committed”.

Without naming any other country, all five leaders also reiterated their commitment to fight the exploitation of internet for terrorist purposes.

South Africa hurt Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes after nine-wicket win

June 29, 2019 by Nasheman

South Africa, who are out of the race for a semi-final spot, dealt a huge blow to Sri Lanka’s hopes of making it.

Chris Morris

CHESTER-LE-STREET: Former champions Sri Lanka are all but out of the ongoing World Cup after suffering a nine-wicket drubbing against a clinical South Africa.

Sent in to bat, Sri Lanka produced a dismal batting show to manage a modest 203, a target which the Proteas overhauled with 76 balls in hand.

With just six points from seven games, Sri Lanka still have a mathematical chance to be in the semifinals.

First, they need to win their last two games against already-eliminated West Indies (on July 1) and India (July 6) and then depend on favourable results from other remaining league stage games.

The win, however, came as a welcome relief for South Africa, who have endured a nightmarish World Cup campaign.

The Proteas are already out of the tournament after registering just two wins out of their eight games.

Chasing the modest target, South Africa lost Quinton de Kock (15) at the score of 31 in the fifth over but thereafter Hashim Amla and skipper Faf du Plessis held the fort and stitched an unbeaten 175-run stand to guide the Proteas home comfortably.

While Du Plessis remained unbeaten on 96 off 103 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and one six, Amla finished on 80 not out off 105 balls with the help of five fours.

Lasith Malinga (1/47) was the only successful bowler for Sri Lanka.

Earlier, the Proteas picked up wickets at regular intervals after the first 10 overs, never allowing the Sri Lankan middle-order settle down.

Drafted into the playing eleven in place of Lungi Ngidi, pacer Dwaine Pretarius (3/25) justified his selection with a three-wicket haul.

Chris Morris (3/46) and Kagiso Rabada (2/36) shared five wickets between them.

Sri Lanka had a horrible start as they lost skipper Dimuth Karunaratne in the first ball of the match, caught by his counterpart Du Plessis at the second slip off Rabada.

Thereafter, Kusal Perera (30 off 34) and Avishka Fernando (30 off 29) took the counter-attacking approach and played fearlessly to stitch a 67-run stand off 58 balls before the duo perished in quick succession.

Right-arm pacer Pretorius sent both the batsmen packing in consecutive overs as Sri Lanka slumped to 72 for three in 11.3 overs.

New man Angelo Mathews looked in no hurry and took 29 balls to score his 11 runs before he played on a Morris delivery in the 22nd over.

Kusal Mendis (23 off 51) had to dug deep for his runs before he became Pretorius’ third victim, spooning one to Morris at extra cover.

Dhananjaya de Silva (24) , Jeeva Mendis (18) and Thisara Perera (21) all got starts but threw away their wickets when Sri Lanka needed them to carry on.

Singh, Vanita Kharat, Aanchal Chauhan, Urvashi Panchal, Siya Mahajan, Abhay Raj Singh & Vipul Deshpande

Music: Mithun, Amaal Malik, Vishal Mishra, Sachet-Parampara, Akhil Sachdeva & Harshvardhan Rameshwar

One of the most loved love stories of Bollywood is of course Devdas. It has been remade several times & a decade later, Anurag Kashyap gave a different touch to the tale through Dev D in the year 2009. All the interpretations have been liked as there’s a charm in the story of a man who goes on a self-destructive path when he fails to get the girl he loves. 2 years ago, Sandeep Reddy Vanga made a Telugu film named Arjun Reddy, which had a kind of a deja vu of Devdas. Yet, it stood out due to the treatment, execution & performances. Arjun Reddy became a cult success & now its Hindi remake Kabir Sigh has hit the theaters.

So the scripted scenario of Kabir Singh reveals that it is the story of a heartbroken man on the path of self-destruction. Kabir Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is a top ranked medical student from a Delhi medical school. He is hot tempered & once during a football match, he gets into physical altercation with a rival college student named Amit (Amit Sharma). The college Dean (Adil Hussain) asks him to tender an apology or else he’ll be fired. Kabir chooses the 2nd option as he’s of the opinion that he did no wrong. But in no time Kabir Singh changes his mind after he sees the 1st year student Preeti (Kiara Advani). Luck favors on him as Preeti’s family is a family friend of Kabir Singh’s & he’s asked to take care of her. Kabir Singh is much feared on campus & he starts to give her personal lessons. Preeti enjoys this attention & soon they begin a romantic relationship. After their course ends, they move back to their respective residences in Mumbai. Kabir Singh’s brother Karan Singh (Arjan Bajwa) is getting married & Kabir Singh goes to Preeti’s house to pick her up. Things turn awry here as Preeti’s father spots the lovebirds cosying up to each other. In a sudden turn of events, Preeti is compelled to get married to one Jatinder & Kabir Singh is unable to stop this union. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s (Who had also directed the Telugu original Arjun Reddy) story is top-notch & very entertaining. The entire premise & most of the script is the same as Arjun Reddy. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s screenplay does justice to the premise. The biggest plus is that it’s quite fresh. Despite the Devdas hangover, it stands out & looks like a story of the present day. The film showcases a vast journey of the protagonist & it’s stitched together very well. Siddharth & Garima’s dialogues are quite impactful & even suit the temper of the protagonist. The funny & the medically inspired 1 liner’s are indeed quite witty & funny.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s direction is quite impressive & he recreates the same magic that he managed to create even in Arjun Reddy. For a director who’s so new, Sandeep Reddy Vanga helms this venture like a pro. One can feel the pain that Kabir Singh goes through & despite his immoral acts & addiction; one’s heart goes out to him. To manage to achieve this feat is no cakewalk.

Kabir Singh has a bit of a philosophical beginning & it’s so confusing. The film gets on track as the flashback scenes commences. One of the high points of the 1st ever half is when Kabir Singh assaults the rival college player & even rationalizes his behavior in front of the Dean. The scenes where he orders Preeti to join him for private lessons seem a bit unsettling but it gets better once you find out that Preeti is willingly joining him & that she enjoys his company. Then again the film goes on a high during the intense Holi sequence. The tension continues in the entire pre-interval & even after the intermission portions. Post interval the film gets a bit dragging. But it keeps one engaged as Kabir Singh turns into an alcoholic but a fantastic surgeon & even gets into a sort of fling with Jiya Sharma (Nikita Dutta). The in house court sequence is very intriguing. The climax is partly predictable but the turn of events will surely surprise one & all. The film ends on a lovely note.

The Songs are mostly relegated in the background. “Bekhayali”is the best of the lot & very well placed in the film. “Kaise Hua”is well shot & the instrumental part of the song is like one of the film’s themes. “Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage” “Pehla Pyaar”& “Tera Ban Jaunga”are sweet. “Mere Sohneya”is uplifting. Harshvardhan Rameshwar’s background score is subtle & even absent in a few scenes. But the central theme of the film is exhilarating & even adds to the excitement.

Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran’s cinematography is superlative. The madness is very well captured. Mansi Dhruv Mehta’s production design is quite rich. Payal Saluja & Ankita Patel’s costumes are realistic yet appealing. Afzal Usman Khan’s action is quite real & exremely gory. Aarif Sheikh’s editing is a bit abrupt at certain places.

Shahid Kapoor, no doubt, owns the film. It won’t be wrong to say this is his most accomplished work. He had a tall order to accomplish since he is stepping into the shoes of the Telugu actor Vijay Deverekonda & that too in a role that made him an overnight craze. Yet, Shahid Kapoor comes out with flying colors. He has boyish looks & still, when he enters the rival college & bashes a student in front of other 100’s of the in-house students & they don’t even object, it seems totally convincing. His alcoholic phase is quite digestible too. Kiara Advani doesn’t have much dialogues & even her screen time is limited in the 2nd half. However she fits the part & even adds a lot with her fine performance. Her breakdown sequence is exceptional. Nikita Dutta is very sweet in the supporting role. Arjan Bajwa as Kabir Sing’s brother & Suresh Oberoi as Kabir Singh’s father are decent. Soham Majumdar as Shiva has a very crucial part & is very entertaining. Audiences would surely love him. Adil Hussain is passable. Vanita Kharat as Kabir Singh’s maid raises the laughs in both her scenes. Amit Sharma is a bit over the top but that suits his character. The actors playing Shruti, Jatinder, Keerti are also fine.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Kabir Singh is a well-made love saga which has tremendous appeal for the youth. The deadly cocktail of the adult theme & even the lovemaking scenes, the hit music, the taut script & the bravura performances would surely bring the audiences in hordes to the cinemas halls.

At the box office turnstiles Arjun Reddy is a sure shot win. Period!!!
