Cong-JD(S) mulls cabinet reshuffle, rebel MLAs to be made ministers?

May 27, 2019 by Nasheman

A list of ministers who can be dropped without repercussions has been made.

Highly placed sources in the Congress say that Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has called for a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where the issue of dropping ministers will be raised.

Party insiders say that Women and Child Welfare Minister Jayamala, Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge, Sugar from Commerce and Industries Minister RB Thimmapur, Backward Classes and Welfare Minister C Puttaranga Shetty, Labour Minister Venkataramanappa, Urban Development Minister UT Khade, Minor Irrigation Minister CS Puttaraju, Small Scale Industries Minister SR Sreenivas and Transport Minister DC Thammanna are on the list of ministers likely to be dropped during the rejig. These ministries will instead be given to MLAs who are likely to join the BJP, in an attempt to incentivise them.

“The reshuffle will happen in mid-June. Chief Minister Kumaraswamy has asked Congress leader Siddaramaiah to make a list of potential MLAs, who are likely to defect and hold talks with them. The Congress is also making a list of party loyalists, who can be removed from the cabinet without repercussions and replace them with rebels,” the source added.

Congress sources say that four MLAs in the party have held talks with BJP leaders regarding defection including Chikkaballapura MLA Dr K Sudhakar, Hirekerur MLA BC Patil, Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi and Shivajinagar MLA Roshan Baig. “If these leaders stay back, the others won’t be persuaded to leave,” the source said.

The Karnataka legislative assembly that has a total strength of 225 MLAs including the Speaker. The BJP is the single largest party with 105 BJP MLAs. Two independent MLAs have offered their support to the BJP has increasing its tally to 107 MLAs. The party needs just 7 MLAs to reach the halfway mark of 113.

Who is to be blamed for the loss?

Furious with his party men for the rebellion and the massive losses suffered in their strongholds, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is planning to sack JD(S) Ministers from Tumakuru and Mandya – SR Sreenivas and CS Puttaraju. While the JD(S) patriarch lost from Tumakuru, Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil suffered a crushing defeat in Mandya.

“Someone has to be blamed when things go wrong and this time it is the district-in charge ministers. Puttaraju and Sreenivas are two strong leaders in JD(S) and they are likely to be sacked. Congress is also planning to take remedial measures to turn things around. Firstly, there is demand for Priyank Kharge to be removed from his cabinet post. They are thinking about giving the seat to a leader from Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Someone from the Lambani community,” the source said.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara said that the party would initiate changes required to further political growth. “There will be organisation-level changes. There are no disgruntled MLAs and everyone is staying with the party,” he added.

Sources in the BJP say that the party is confident of toppling the government and will bring in President’s rule soon and later go for snap polls in November this year.

“Yeddyurappa kept making noises about the government falling but so far nothing happened. Everyone knew that the MLAs would not be persuaded to leave until Lok Sabha polls were over. The high command has instructed leaders to be patient. We are sure of bringing at least 15 of them into our Cong-JD(S) mulls cabinet reshuffle, rebel MLAs to be made ministeBlurb:  A list of ministers who can be dropped without repercussions has been made.

Katrina Kaif’s first film as producer is expected to go on the floors by the end of 2019

Everything You Want To Know About Katrina Kaif's First Film As A Producer

MUMBAI:

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Katrina Kaif will next be seen opposite Salman Khan in Bharat
  2. Katrina bought the rights of French film He Loves Me He Loves Me Not
  3. I would like to put my name for which I feel very strongly about: Katrina

Actress Katrina Kaif who is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming film Bharat, hopes that she will start shooting of the film under her production house by this year. Katrina was interacting with the media to promote Bharat on Friday in Mumbai. There were reports that Katrina Kaif has bought the rights of the French film He Loves Me He Loves Me Not a while ago but the project couldn’t take shape earlier due to undisclosed reasons. However, it has now taken off and is being developed.

Notably, Katrina is the latest leading Bollywood heroine to get into production. Actresses Priyanka Chopra (Purple Pebble Pictures), Anushka Sharma (Clean Slate Films) and Swara Bhasker (Kahaaniwaaley) already have their production houses going, ensuring a greater, better presentation of women in Indian cinema.

Talking about the development, Katrina said, “That French film is a story on which we are working on for quite a sometime. It’s not a French film actually but there were few ideas which had come to me. I really liked it and I might put my name to it as a producer. I would like to put my name for which I feel very strongly about. There are few discussions happening so, hopefully this year will start shooting for the film.”

Katrina is one of the actors who joined social media very recently but in short span of time, she has millions of followers on multiple social media platforms, when asked Katrina how she feels about it, she said, “I am happy. I think it’s been a nice decision for me. I don’t know why I was stressed about it. I was really against coming on social media. I remember when Twitter first came to India, my manager told me that Twitter wants me to join this platform and that time, it was an endorsement kind of a thing and nowadays, everybody is posting on Twitter for free and I was not much interested in coming on this platform and now everybody is on Twitter so, I feel sometimes I lack foresight and the vision.”

Katrina added, “For me, the deciding factor to join social media was there was a phase where everything I was reading about myself, I was like this is not a correct representation of me and I used to feel very helpless about it. Then, I started thinking about why it is happening with me more so than other people then, I realised that everyone has a platform on which they used to speak so that made me join social media.”

Surat Tragedy: Fire Engines Took 45 Minutes To Travel 2 Km, Say Onlookers

May 25, 2019 by Nasheman

Most of the students are said to be between the ages of 15 and 21. The fire was reportedly triggered by a short circuit.

Surat Tragedy: Fire Engines Took 45 Minutes To Travel 2 Km, Say Onlookers

20 people have died and more than 20 have been injured in the fire.
SURAT:

At least 20 people, mostly students, have died in the massive fire that broke out at a coaching centre in Gujarat’s Surat on Friday afternoon.Police have arrested the owner of the coaching centre and have registered a case against the coaching centre owner and builders of the complex.

“20 people have died and more than 20 have been injured in the fire that broke out in Surat yesterday. An FIR has been registered against three people,” Satish Sharma, Commissioner of Police Surat, said.

Two of the injured students were on ventilator and five have been admitted to intensive care units (ICU), news agency IANS reported.

The fire reportedly started near the staircase of the interior design coaching centre and quickly spread to the top two floors of the commercial building called Takshashila Arcade in the Sarthana area of the city, officials said. About 50 or 60 people were inside the building when the fire broke out, they added. Some were expecting their Class 12 results today, IANS reported.

“There was smoke. I did not know what to do. I took the ladder and first helped the children get out of the place. I managed to save 8-10 people. Later I managed to rescue two more students,” said an eyewitness.

He said that it took the fire brigade 40-45 minutes to reach the place despite the fire station being just 2 km away from the building. The father of a girl rescued from the building also questioned their response time. “My daughter was inside the building when the fire broke out. The fire brigade from the fire station, which is not more than 2 km away, took almost 45 minutes to come. Even though my daughter got saved, she is in a state of trauma,” Paresh Patel, father of the rescued girl, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Another witness, Ajay Patel, whose office is opposite the building that caught fire, said the casualty could have reduced had the fire brigade come prepared. “The pressure of their pipe was too low to douse the flame,” he said.

Videos posted by witnesses on social media showed several students jumping out of windows on the top floor of the four-storey building to escape the blaze. Most of the students are said to be between the ages of 15 and 21. The fire was reportedly triggered by a short circuit.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an investigation and announced financial help of 4 lakh each to the families of students who died in the tragedy.

“Twenty people have lost their lives in the tragedy in spite of our rescue efforts. Students of around 20 years of age were trapped in the coaching centre when a fire broke out in the stairway,” Mr Rupani said.

“We have asked the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department Principal Secretary, Mukesh Puri to immediately investigate and submit a report upon the matter. State Government will provide Rs. 4 lakh financial help to families of kids who died,” he added.

BHOPAL:

A Muslim couple and two men were thrashed by a group for allegedly carrying beef in an autorickshaw at a village in Madhya Pradesh. In a video of the incident shot by an eyewitness on a mobile phone, the woman was seen being hit repeatedly with a slipper on her head, covered with a piece of cloth, as she curled up on the gravel and took the blows in silence from the attacker who was heard yelling at her, “Jai Shri Ram”. The three men were also tied to a tree one by one and thrashed by the group.

The police said five men have been arrested from Seoni city, 350 km from state capital Bhopal.

“The video is four days old and four people have been arrested. They have been sent to jail by a local court. One more accused has been arrested. He will appear in court today,” local police officer Lalit Shakyavar said.

One of the accused, Shubham Singh, who calls himself a member of “Ram Sena”, posted the video on his Facebook account on May 23; he deleted it later. In a photo he uploaded in April, he is seen standing next to BJP parliamentarian and Malegaon blasts accused Pragya Thakur and a group of men.

A man is thrashed for allegedly carrying beef in Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni

On May 22, the three men and the woman, all Muslims, were travelling in an autorickshaw when they were intercepted by the group of vigilantes, who accused them of carrying beef, the police said.

Instead of informing the police, the men took matters on their own hands and held the passengers hostage and interrogated them, witnesses said.

In the video, the group is heard chanting “Jai Shri Ram” as they landed blows after blows on the men who were tied to a tree. One of them is untied and pushed to the ground as more sticks landed on his body, the video shows.

People who gathered about where the beatings happened said no one called the police when the incident was unfolding.COMMENT

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the incident. “Horrified to see cow vigilantes thrash an innocent Muslim with such impunity in MP. Hope Kamal Nath takes swift action against these goons,” she tweeted.

Delhi Elects Only One Woman To Lok Sabha, Again

May 25, 2019 by Nasheman

Since the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, it has been a pattern of electing only one woman, which was followed in 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Delhi Elects Only One Woman To Lok Sabha, Again

Of the 16 women candidates who contested from Delhi, only Meenakshi Lekhi of the BJP has got elected.
NEW DELHI:

Delhi has elected only one woman to enter the Lok Sabha, yet again. Of the 16 women candidates who contested from seven Lok Sabha constituencies of Delhi, only Meenakshi Lekhi of the Bharatiya Janata Party has got elected.

There were 164 candidates in total.

Out of the total 16 general elections held in Delhi since Independence, it has been seven times that only one woman candidate was elected.

Since the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, it has been a pattern of electing only one woman, which was followed in 2004, 2009 and 2014.

The same has been repeated this time.

Delhi did not elect any female candidate six times and only thrice, out of 16 Lok Sabha elections, it elected more than one woman candidate.

Two women were elected from Delhi each in the fifth (1971), 11th (1996) and the 12th (1988) Lok Sabha elections.

In the 1996 and 1998 elections, BJP’s Sushma Swaraj and Congress’ Meira Kumar were elected from Delhi.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha, on all the seven seats, there was a triangular contest between Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP in power at the Centre and the Congress.

While all the three parties are vocal about woman empowerment, each of them had named only one female candidate among their seven candidates.

The Congress fielded its three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who came second in the North East Delhi seat as BJP’s Manoj Tiwari won.

The AAP named 37-year-old Atishi from the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat. She came third.

In New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, BJP’s 51-year-old Meenakashi Lekhi was among the two woman candidates out of 27 people in the fray.

The number of women to contest the 2019 elections in the national capital saw an increase compared to 2014 but down from that in 2009.

In 2014, out of 150 candidates, 13 were women; while in 2009, out of 160 candidates, 18 women contested the elections. However, only one woman each time managed to reach the Lower House.

In 2009, Congress’ Krishna Tirath and in 2014, BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi became the sole females to be elected to the House from the city.

Krishna Tirath was also the single woman elected from Delhi in 2004, while in 1999, BJP’s Anita Arya was elected from the Karol Bagh seat.COMMENT

Delhi has also elected a single woman parliamentarian in the first, second and eighth Lok Sabha. No female was elected from the city in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 10th Lok Sabha.
