Deadly explosion hits mosque in Afghanistan’s Kabul

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

A bomb exploded at a mosque, killing two people, including the prayer leader in Paktia Kot area of Kabul.2 hours ago

Two people, including a senior muslim preacher, were killed and at least 16 wounded after an explosion in a mosque during Friday prayers in the Afghan capital.

The explosion took place around 01:20pm (08:50 GMT) and targeted the al-Taqwa mosque at a time when dozens had gathered for afternoon prayers.

Jan Agha, a district police official, said the bomb was planted in the microphone used by the prayer leader, Mawlawi Samiullah Raihan, during Friday prayers.

“Unfortunately in the blast, Mawlawi Raihan has been martyred and 16 other worshippers were wounded,” said Nasrat Rahimi, spokesperson for the interior ministry.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) groups regularly stage attacks in the country’s capital.

Earlier this month, the Taliban attacked the offices of Counterpart International in Kabul, an NGO headquartered in the United States that has been operating in Afghanistan since 2005.

The Taliban has stepped up attacks across the country, even as it holds direct negotiations with officials from the US to end the 17-year war in Afghanistan.

Pakistan PM Khan seeks peace talks after Modi’s election win

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Modi’s campaign included promises to ‘punish’ Pakistan for allegedly supporting the armed revolt in Kashmir.by Asad Hashim4 hours ago

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistani Prime MinisterImran Khan has congratulated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on what appears to be a landslide win in his country’s general election, adding that he looked forward to working with him “for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia”.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 303 seats out of the 542 that it contested in the elections, election results showed. The result means the right-wing party is set to overtake its current tally of 282 seats in parliament, further strengthening Modi’s hold on power.

Known for his support for Hindu nationalism, Modi’s campaign included strong messaging on national security and promises to “punish” Pakistan for allegedly supporting the armed revolt in the disputed region of Kashmir.

Following Khan’s tweet on Thursday, Modi thanked the Pakistani prime minister for his “good wishes”, saying he had “always given primacy to peace and development in our region”.

Tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours remain high after a military standoff earlier this year saw both countries launch air raids on each other’s territory, and an Indian fighter jet shot down in an aerial dogfight.

That skirmish followed a suicide attack in the disputed territory of Kashmir, which India and Pakistan both claim in full but administer in parts.

The attack, in the town of Pulwama in mid-February, killed at least 40 Indian security personnel, with India blaming Pakistan for “controlling” the attack. Pakistan denied the accusation.

On February 26, Indian aircraft conducted air raids on Pakistani territory, claiming to have destroyed a training camp run by the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) armed group.

An Al Jazeera visit to the site of the bombing found little evidence to support the claim. At least four Indian bombs appeared to have hit a hillside near a JeM-run school, wounding one man.

As a show of force, Pakistan carried out retaliatory air strikes on unpopulated areas in Indian-administered Kashmir a day later. An Indian fighter jet was shot down that same day and the pilot captured.

He was returned to India two days later, in a move aimed to defuse mounting fears of open conflict.

Modi’s BJP made the air attacks and his government’s hardline stance against Pakistan a key part of their election platform.

Before the election, the Pakistani president had expressed the opinion that having a hardline right-wing government in India made it easier to hold peace talks.READ MORE

Analysts, however, warn that it is possible that Modi, while empowered by his mandate, may also be locked into a position based on election rhetoric.

“His whole election campaign was based on two things: national security and taking tough action on Pakistan,” Zahid Hussain, a security analyst, told Al Jazeera.

“So I don’t think the situation will change for the time being.”

Hussain said the massive election victory for Modi’s BJP may, in fact, “reinforce his hardline position”.

“He may now demand that Pakistan come to its knees to hold talks.”

Khan’s government was grappling with an economic crisis at home, the central bank raising interest rates to 12.25 percent earlier this week to attempt to curb rising inflation and the country’s current account deficit.

This week, central bank data showed the country’s fiscal deficit was up to five percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first nine months of the financial year, a 10-year high.READ MORE

“Pakistan seems to be quite desperate to find a way forward, also because of its economic situation and external pressures,” said Hussain. “There is certainly a willingness to move forward from Pakistan.”

On Wednesday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.

“I made it clear to her that we want to amicably resolve all issues,” Qureshi said in a statement released after the meeting.

India’s foreign ministry did not comment on that meeting.

Trump orders intelligence agencies to join probe into 2016 campaign surveillance

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

Moscow, May 24 (Sputnik) US President Donald Trump authorized the US intelligence community to engage in an investigation led by US Attorney General William Barr into surveillance activities surrounding his 2016 presidential election campaign, the White House has said.
“Today, at the request and recommendation of the Attorney General of the United States, President Donald J. Trump directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the Attorney General’s investigation into surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election,” the White House press secretary said in a statement late on Thursday.
Trump also authorized the attorney general to declassify data as part of the probe.
“Today’s action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions,” the statement added.
The surveillance activities that affected some of the members of the Trump campaign team back in 2016 are seen by many as one of the origins of the probe into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the run-up to the presidential election, won by Trump.
While the probe failed to establish evidence of the alleged collusion, which was denied by both Moscow and Trump, in April, Barr announced an investigation into its origins.

In mid-May, Barr assigned John Durham, the US attorney in Connecticut, to look into the origins of the Russia probe.

Rahul expresses gratitude to Wayanad voters, tweets in Malayalam

May 24, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, May 24 : A day after he faced a humiliating defeat in Nehru-Gandhi family’ s traditional stronghold Amethi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday thanked voters in Wayanad, from where he secured his Lok Sabha entry in the just concluded election.

“Ningalude prathinidhiyaayi enne thiranjedutha wayanattile ellaa janangalkkum nandi parayunnu”- (I am thanking to all the people from Wayanad who have selected me as their representative) Mr Gandhi tweeted in Malayalam.

The Congress president won by 4,31,770 votes against his nearest rival Left Democratic Front (LDF)’s PP Suneer in Kerala’s hilly constituency.

The Congress high command had announced Mr Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad as his second constituency in the middle of Lok Sabha election.

Wayanad, considered as a stronghold of Congress-led United Democratic Front, and won by late MI Shanawas with a margin of 20,870 votes in 2014.

Mr Gandhi’s entry into Wayanad had energised party workers across the state and it won 19 seats out of 20 in the LDF ruled Kerala.

The only seat, UDF lost was Alappuzha, which was represented by Mr Gandhi’s trusted aide and party’s organisational general secretary KC Venugopal in 2014.

Mr Venugopal had opted out from the contest this time, citing organisational responsibilities.

However, BJP nominee Smriti Irani defeated Mr Gandhi in Amethi with a margin of 55,120 votes.

Mr Gandhi has been representing the prestigious Amethi seat for last 15 years since 2004.

Bengaluru, May 23 (UNI) Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Dinesh Gundu Rao today owned responsibility for the party’s debacle in the Lok Sabha election.

Dhoni shouldn’t be disturbed from no 5: Tendulkar

May 23, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, May 23 : As the Indian cricket team landed in London for the World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar said that MS Dhoni shouldn’t be disturbed from his ideal place at number 5 and promoted to number 4, as the team has quality batsmen for that position.

In recent days there have been suggestions from the cricket fraternity that India should have quality batsmen at No. 4. Vice-captain Rohit Sharma had said that the former skipper should be promoted to play at No. 4.
India has tried Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik for the No.4 slot.
“My personal opinion is Dhoni should be batting at five. I still don’t know what the team combination would be, but if you are going Rohit and Shikhar as openers, to Virat [Kohli] at No. 3 and whoever at No. 4 then Dhoni could be No. 5. Then Hardik Pandya, an explosive player, follows them,” Tendulkar said, disagreeing with others.
”Now, a number of things have been discussed as far as slot No. 4 is concerned, but I feel if you have quality batsmen then they should be able to adjust their style of play at whichever number they are asked to bat. I think we have that quality which can go out and deliver at whatever number they have been sent.” he told ESPNcricinfo.

Asked about Hardik Pandya, who might become the most important player if India goes all the way up in the tournament, Tendulkar replied, ”Looking at the way how Hardik has played in the IPL, he is connecting the ball really well. He hasn’t slogged, to be honest. He has played proper cricketing shots, which is an advantage because that is how one would get more consistent. That is going to work in his favour. Hardik, of course, has gone to England with lots and lots of confidence and positive energy, which will reflect on the field.”

”This is going to be a big tournament for him. I am hoping that we, as a team, move forward and go all the way till the end and give a reason for the whole nation to smile and celebrate,” he added.

About Shikhar Dhawan who is the only left-hander in the team and needs to bat as deep as he can, Tendulkar said, ”Yes, of course. A left-right combination always helps because that means the bowler has to adjust his line every now and then and the [bowling] captain has to keep thinking. And if there is a partnership the job becomes even more tougher.
So, yes, it is important for a left-hander to be there to put pressure on the legspinner or for that matter any bowler.”
The Indian team will play two practice matches against New Zealand (May 25) and Bangladesh (May 28) before they begin their campaign in the main tournament against South Africa on June 5.

Ashwin second Indian to play county cricket after Rahane

May 23, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, May 23 : Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be the second Indian after Ajinkya Rahane to play county cricket this season.
Ashwin will join Nottinghamshire for the second half of the county season and comes in place of Australia’s James Pattinson as Nottinghamshire’s overseas player at the end of June and is expected to feature in six of their final seven red-ball matches.

He plays at home against Essex on June 30, followed by matches against Somerset and Surrey. However, will not play away fixture against Yorkshire but will be back against Kent, Warwickshire and Surrey.
“I enjoyed my previous stint in England with Worcestershire. It’s a good, competitive standard of cricket over there and I can’t wait to get started, joining up with Nottinghamshire at an iconic venue like Trent Bridge and hopefully contributing to some County Championship victories,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin plays for the second time in the county. In 2017, having played four matches for Worcestershire the spinner bagged 20 wickets and scored 214 runs with an average of 42.80.
Ajinkya Rahane had signed for Hampshire earlier and started his season with a century on Wednesday, against the team Ashwin has signed for.
