Sumalatha will beat Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil predicts News9-Cvoter exit poll

May 21, 2019 by Nasheman

The constituency-wise exit poll conducted by TV9-News9-CVoter has predicted several big losses for the Congress-JD(S) combine, especially in the most controversial constituencies including Mandya, Kalaburgi and the three segments in Bengaluru city. The polls predicted that of the 28 total seats in Karnataka, BJP would win 18 seats, the Congress 7 seats, JD(S) 2 seats and one seat would go to an independent.

The exit polls indicate that Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy would lose the Mandya segment to independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh backed by BJP. One of the most controversial election battles that was fought in 2019, the Mandya segment witnessed a tough fight between the two candidates.

With several Dalit, women’s right and minority groups offering their support to Sumalatha in addition to disgruntled Congress party workers, the election campaign became a point of friction between the coalition partners.

Another shocking prediction is the loss of a stronghold for the Congress – the Kalaburgi segment. Veteran politician and eight-time MP from Kalaburgi, Mallikarkjun Kharge is predicted to lose the seat to his mentee-turned-rival Dr Umesh Jadav of the BJP.

Umesh Jadav, the former MLA of Chincholi had quit the Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Jadav had expressed his unhappiness with not being offered the ticket. He had also taken offence to the party giving preference to Mallikarjun Kharge’s son Priyank Kharge while allocating ministerial berths.

The polls also predicted that the BJP’s Tejasvi Surya, PC Mohan and DV Sadananda Gowda would win from Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Central and Bengaluru North segments. Although, south and central have been BJP strongholds, the Congress had fielded a strong candidate –Krishna Byre Gowda, from Bengaluru North hoping that his image as a well-educated urbanite would attract the city’s voters towards the Congress.

While Nikhil Kumaraswamy is touted to lose, his grandfather HD Deve Gowda has been predicted to win from Tumakuru. Deve Gowda’s other grandson Prajwal Revanna has been predicted to win from Hassan.

Unfavourable exit polls prompts K’taka CM to cancel Delhi visit: Sources

May 21, 2019 by Nasheman

HD Kumaraswamy was supposed to join the top brass of 21 Opposition parties in Delhi, who are rallying for a non-BJP government at the Centre.

On Tuesday morning, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy cancelled his visit to the national capital — New Delhi, unceremoniously. He was supposed to join the top brass of 21 Opposition parties who are rallying for a non-BJP government at the Centre. Kumaraswamy was also to be a part of the delegation that is meeting the Election Commission regarding the issue of EVMs.

A JD(S) source claimed that the CM’s visit has been cancelled due to the prevailing “fluid state” following the exit polls. All major exit polls have hinted at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return.

“See now, the exit poll results have come out. Everything is now in a fluid state. So let the clear picture emerge, that is why he is waiting for May 23. There is no point for him to go. Anyway, we are expecting five seats in total, so our role is more to act as a binding factor for all other small parties. So let the results come out, then only we can act on that direction,” the JD(S) source added.

The Opposition parties intend to demand that the EC tally the VVPAT slips with the EVM count for every constituency in order to detect discrepancies. Ahmed Patel of the Congress, Sharad Pawar of NCP, Chandrababu Naidu of TDP, Satish Chandra Mishra of BSP, Sitaram Yechury of CPI(M) and Derek O’Brien of the TMC are expected to meet the EC officials. Kumaraswamy was also supposed to join the 21 parties and address the press jointly at the Constitution Club in Delhi, before heading for a meeting with the Election Commission.

It may be recalled that Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in ceremony in mid-2018 was the first time that the top leaders of all anti-BJP political parties came together on the same stage in a show of unity.

The CM’s office could not be reached for comment. Now, KC Venugopal, the AICC-Karnataka-in charge is likely to meet the CM later in the day at the former’s JP Nagar residence.

The calling off of the CM’s visit has also triggered speculations about the longevity of the state government amidst the continuous public infighting between the two coalition partners. Since the formation of the coalition government, the two parties had also contested the Lok Sabha polls as pre-poll allies.

The open bitterness among some leaders and former rivals has even displeased Congress President Rahul Gandhi who cracked the whip on Sunday. Following that, KPCC (Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee) President Dinesh Gundu Rao was forced to make a public statement appealing to leaders of both the parties to avoid making controversial comments.

However, the JD(S) source claimed that despite the apparent differences, there is no threat to the government.

Incidentally, BJP president Amit Shah is hosting a dinner in Delhi for all the NDA allies, two days ahead of counting of votes.

Beer-laden truck catches fire in Andhra, estimated loss of goods worth Rs 15 lakh

May 21, 2019 by Nasheman

A truck carrying several hundred beer bottles in Andhra Pradesh caught fire on Monday afternoon near Nandyal in Kurnool district, gutting the cargo on board the vehicle. Police suspect that the fire started in the engine but spread through the vehicle quickly as the flames caught on to the liquor in the bottles.

While the vehicle was immediately brought to a halt on the side of the road, the incident resulted in many bottles exploding, sending glass pieces flying in every direction. The incident took place close to the office of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Nandyal.

The driver of the truck, who jumped out as soon as he noticed the smoke and later attempted to put out the fire, was injured. He was shifted to the nearest government hospital to treat his burn injuries. Speaking to reporters, he said that the truck was coming from Hyderabad after picking up the load from a distillery in Sangareddy district.

The Nandyal Prohibition and Excise circle inspector Lalita Devi told reporters that 1,300 cartons carrying 15,600 bottles were gutted in the incident, which resulted in an estimated loss of goods worth Rs 15 lakh. The vehicle was also completely destroyed in the fire.

While the cause of the fire is yet to ascertained, police suspect that excessive heating up of the engine may have led to the incident.

Earlier this year, a man was burnt alive in Hyderabad after the car that he was driving on the city’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) caught fire near Sultanpur village in Sangareddy district’s Ameenpur mandal. Visuals of the incident showed the car, parked on one side of the road, even as locals filmed it. The deceased was identified as Ganta Venkata Giri, who resided in Bowranpet and worked as an Assistant Manager at the Gangavaram Port’s office in the city. He was on his way to work in Banjara Hills when the incident occurred.

A Nepalese Sherpa climber, Kami Rita, has scaled the Mount Everest for a 24th time, the second such feat in just a week after breaking his own record for the most successful ascents of the world’s highest peak.

The 49-year-old, who is a native of Thame village located in the shadow of Mount Everest, reached the 8,848-metre peak via the Southeast Ridge route on Tuesday, tourism department official Mira Acharya said.

Acharya said Rita, who goes by his first name Kami, said he wanted to climb the mountain one more time.

“I am still strong and want to climb Sagarmatha 25 times,” Kami had told Reuters news agency before leaving for his 23rd climb last week, referring to the Nepali name for the Everest.

‘Like a soldier’

Rita first scaled the Everest in 1994 and has been making the trip nearly every year since, one of many Sherpa guides whose expertise and skills are vital to the safety and success of the hundreds of climbers who head to Nepal each year seeking to stand on top of the world.

His father was among the first Sherpa guides employed to help climbers reach the summit and Rita followed in his footsteps and then some.

In addition to his nearly two dozen summits of Everest, Rita has scaled several other peaks that are among the world’s highest, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse.

Rita was at Everest’s base camp in 2015 when an avalanche swept through, killing 19 people.

After that tragedy, he came under intense family pressure to quit mountaineering altogether, but in the end, decided against it.

The route was pioneered by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953 and remains the most popular snow trail leading to the highest point on the Earth.

Nearly 5,000 climbers have scaled the peak since the pioneering ascent, many multiple times.

Two other climbers, both Sherpas, have scaled Everest 21 times each. They have both retired from mountaineering.

The climbing season ends in May and hundreds of climbers are currently on the Everest, trying to reach the top from both the Nepali and Tibetan sides of the mountain.

Tourism, which includes mountain climbing, is the main source of income for cash-strapped Nepal, home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains.

Reports of alleged EVM tampering are ‘absolutely false’: Election Commission

May 21, 2019 by Nasheman

The Election Commission on Tuesday said that the reports of alleged movement of EVMs, purportedly to replace polled EVMs in strongrooms are “absolutely false”, adding that visuals doing the rounds in sections of media “do not pertain to any EVMs used during the polls”.

“Complaints of alleged movement of EVMs, purportedly to replace polled EVMs in strongrooms, doing rounds in sections of media. Would like to unambiguously clarify that reports are absolutely false. Visuals seen viral on media do not pertain to any EVMs used during the polls,” the EC clarified.

Election Commission: The provisions and protocols have been explained to the political parties on multiple occasions including in several of the 93 meetings held with them at the Commission since announcement of elections.

“The provisions and protocols have been explained to the political parties on multiple occasions including in several of the 93 meetings held with them at the Commission since the announcement of elections,” the Commission released.

The top poll body also stated that any lapse in the handling of reserve EVMs will be investigated and action will be taken against those responsible.

“The aspersions in clips being used in media merely pertain to the storage or movement of reserve unused EVMs. However, any case of lapse even in the handling of reserve EVMs is thoroughly investigated and disciplinary action will be taken against the officers responsible”.

Election Commission: The aspersions in clips being used in media merely pertain to the storage or movement of reserve unused EVMs. However any case of lapse even in handling of reserve EVMs is thoroughly investigated and disciplinary action taken against the officers responsible.

Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday also expressed concern over alleged EVM tampering and said that the onus of ensuring institutional integrity of the poll body lies with the EC and it must put all speculation to rest.

Meanwhile, 22 opposition parties submitted a memorandum before the Election Commission today requesting that the verification of VVPAT slips of randomly identified (05) polling stations should be done prior to the initiation of counting of votes and not after the completion of last round of counting, news agency reported.

In the memorandum, the opposition leaders have also demanded that if any discrepancy is found anywhere during the VVPAT verification, 100 per cent counting of paper slips of VVPATs of all polling stations of that assembly segment should be done.

The Supreme Court, earlier in the day, dismissed a PIL seeking 100 per cent matching of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the counting of votes on May 23 for Lok Sabha polls.

“The CJI had dealt with this matter. Why are you taking chance before a two-judge vacation bench,” the apex court asked.

“We cannot override the CJI’s order… This is nonsense. The petition is taken on board. Dismissed,” Justice Mishra said.

Full-blown gang war erupts on streets of Delhi in Dwarka Mor

New Delhi: The streets of the national capital resembled a Hindi movie set on Sunday afternoon after a gang war broke out in Dwarka area of south-west Delhi. Going by reports, the deadly altercation was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the area.

Around 4 pm, two bike-borne assailants opened fire at a car in Dwarka Mor area. The people in the car returned fire, turning the suburban neighbourhood into a war zone. However, a police control room (PCR) vehicle arrived at the spot and managed to chase the criminals away. In the shootout which ensued, cops reportedly shot down one armed assailant while another was caught in the middle of the crossfire and sustained fatal injuries.

Delhi Police personnel are yet to reveal the identities of the deceased or state which gang they are a part of. A case has been registered in this regard and an investigation into this matter is underway. More details are awaited.

This is not the first time a full-blown gang war has erupted on the streets of the national capital. Earlier this month, two bike-borne assailants pulled up next to a 28-year-old man walking towards a mall after appearing at a hearing in a Saket court and pumped two bullets in his chest. The victim was later identified as one Prince, a history-sheeter with multiple cases against him.

A similar instance took place in Sector 11, Rohini, earlier this month where a man was chased by armed assailants and shot multiple times over a suspected gang-rivalry. The victim, Manish, was returning home from a party with his friends when they were ambushed by armed men. As per the latest reports, Manish was admitted to a local hospital where his condition was believed to be critical. Eyewitness accounts suggest that around 17 rounds were fired at Manish.

Pakistan considering appointing NSA to resume backchannel diplomacy: Sources

May 20, 2019 by Nasheman

The Imran Khan-led Pakistan government is actively considering appointing a National Security Advisor to revive backchannel diplomacy with India to iron out issues hindering the resumption of peace talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, official sources said on Sunday.

Since assuming the office in August last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan repeatedly reached out to India for the resumption of peace talks on all outstanding issues.

But India has made it clear to Pakistan that terrorism and dialogue will not go hand-in-hand.

The likely appointment of the NSA is meant for reviving the backchannel diplomacy with India to sort out some of the pressing issues between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, the official sources privy to the development was quoted as saying by the Express Tribune.

A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the government was likely to appoint a retired military official as the National Security Advisor (NSA).

He said certain names were under consideration but no final decision has been taken yet.

The relationship between the two neighbouring nations currently is at all-time low after a Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) suicide bomber attacked a CRPF convoy in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14 that killed 40 soldiers.

Amid mounting outrage, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting what it said was a JeM training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan on February 26.

The next day, the PAF retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in aerial combat and captured IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was later released and handed over to India on March 1.

Now, with the almost two-month-long election exercise getting over, the Pakistan government is considering options on how to resume talks with India.

Pakistan believes that the new government in India after the general elections would be more receptive to Khan’s offer of peace talks.

When asked about the prospects of resumption of talks given the current hostilities, the official said Pakistan was optimistic.

The reason for this optimism stems from the fact that new government, whether it is formed by the ruling BJP or the Congress, is unlikely to follow the pre-election rhetoric, he said.

One of the options includes the appointment of the NSA to revive the backchannel with India.

In the past, the two countries often used backchannel through the NSAs to prepare ground for any talks.

In 2015, Pakistan’s NSA Lt General (retd) Naseer Khan Janjua and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval were instrumental in breaking the ice.

The two held meetings in Bangkok leading to the agreement between the two foreign ministers for the resumption of the composite dialogue.

The leadership of the two countries used their respective NSAs to communicate on important issues.

Talking to foreign journalists last month, Khan had said that there might be a better chance of peace talks with India if Modi returned to power.

“If the next Indian government is led by the opposition Congress party, it might be too scared to seek a settlement with Pakistan over Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK), fearing a backlash from the right,” the prime minister told a small group of foreign journalists in an interview.

“Perhaps if the BJP a right-wing party wins, some kind of settlement on Kashmir could be reached.”

Khan’s statement stirred a heated debate both in Pakistan as well as in India, where Modi’s opponents mocked him as Pakistan’s ally.

In Pakistan, opposition parties criticised Khan for making an ‘undiplomatic statement’ and also supporting Modi despite his hostile policies.

First surgical strike happened in September ’16: Lt General Ranbir Singh

May 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Commander-in-chief of Indian Army’s Northern Command, Lt General Ranbir Singh, on Monday confirmed that the Indian Army had undertaken a surgical strike in September 2016.

“A few days ago DGMO said in a reply to an RTI that the first surgical strike happened in September 16′, I don’t want to go into what political parties say, they’ll be given an answer by government. What I told you is a statement of fact,” Lt General Ranbir Singh said.

Indian Army commandos had conducted surgical strikes deep into Pakistani territory across the Line of Control(LoC) on September 29th, 2016 to destroy terrorist launchpads. The strikes were in response to the attack on a military base in Uri on September 18 in which 17 Army soldiers had lost their lives.

Addressing a press conference, Ranbir Singh added that Balakot air strikes in Februrary were a  “major achievement”.

“Air strikes by IAF on Balakot terrorist infrastructure was a major achievement, wherein our aircraft went deep into enemy territory and struck terror launchpads. Pakistanis carried out air operations the following day, however, they were given a befitting reply,” he said.

Lt General Ranbir Singh also informed that the Army was able to neutralise 86 terrorists during various operations, with 20 apprehended. “We’ve also been able to bring back many of them to the mainstream,” he said.

The Northern Command chief, however, added that locals in Kashmir joining militancy “remains a matter of concern”. He asserted that Pakistan feels “absolutely starved” because of effective counter infiltration grid of the Indian Army.

“However, that realization is coming in the youth and people of Kashmir that we do not want to become fodder by the Pakistani agencies and various inimical elements, who want to promote terrorism and violence in J&K,” he said.

“I am sure with the help of all the stakeholders we will be able to arrest this trend in the times to come as we are doing now,” he added.

“Successful infiltration from the Line of Control(LoC) is virtually becoming very difficult. Therefore, for them to continue with this militancy, they want that the local content should be increased,” he said.
