South Korea eases restrictions as coronavirus cases drop

SEOUL: South Korea has reported its lowest daily virus tally in about a month as it began easing its tough social distancing rules in the greater Seoul area.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said on Monday that the 109 new cases added in the past 24 hours took the country’s total to 22,285 with 363 deaths.

It’s the 12th consecutive day for South Korea’s daily jump to stay in the 100s. The 109 additional cases are also the lowest daily tally since mid-August.

The government on Sunday relaxed its physical distancing guidelines in the Seoul metropolitan area, citing a downward trend in new infections and worries about public livelihoods.

Under new distancing rules that are formally effective from Monday for two-weeks, franchise cafes and bakeries are allowed to have customers drink and eat inside their shops while indoor gyms and after-school academics can reopen. A ban on dining at restaurants after 9 p.m. was also lifted.

These facilities are still required to impose some distancing rules like having visitors sit at least one seat apart from each other or wear masks.

Karnataka reports biggest single day spike of 9,894 new COVID-19 cases, over 3,400 from Bengaluru alone

BENGALURU: Karnataka on Sunday reported its biggest single day spike of 9,894 new COVID-19 cases and 104 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 4,59,445 and the death toll to 7,265, the Health department said.

The day also saw 8,402 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 9,894 fresh cases reported on Sunday, 3,479 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

The previous biggest single-day spike was recorded on September 2 with 9,860 cases.

As of September 13 evening, cumulatively 4,59,445 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 7,265 deaths and 3,52,958 discharges, the Health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 99,203 active cases, 98,396 patients were in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 807 were in ICU.

As many as 45 out of total 104 deaths reported on Sunday were from Bengaluru Urban, followed by Mysuru (15), Ballari (8), Dharwad (7), Shivamogga (5), Hassan (4), Dakshina Kannada, Koppal and Tumakuru (3), Gadag, Kolar and Raichur (2), and Chikkaballapura, Davangere, Haveri, Uttara Kannada and Vijayapura(1).

Most of the dead were either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 3,479, followed by Mysuru (665), Ballari (661), Hassan (426), Dakshina Kannada (404), Belagavi (318), Shivamogga (299), Tumakuru (294), Koppal (259) and Mandya (246), followed by others.

Bengaluru Urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 1,70,662 infections, followed by Ballari (26,813) and Mysuru (25,751).

Among discharges too, Bengaluru Urban tops the list with total 1,27,132, followed by Ballari (21,728) and Mysuru (18,158).

A total of 38,00,976 samples were tested so far, out of which 67,955 were tested on Sunday alone.

Sources close to Yeddyurappa suggest that he is not keen on disrupting the cabinet for now, but has to at least make an effort to meet the party top brass and appease disgruntled legislators.

BENGALURU:  With cabinet expansion on top of the agenda, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa could be flying to New Delhi on the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrates his birthday – September 17.

During his visit on September 17 and 18, Yediyurappa will meet Modi and BJP national president J P Nadda. While discussions on cabinet expansion will be held during the meetings, the actual exercise will happen only after the legislature session, according to sources in the Chief Minister’s Office. 

The CM’s New Delhi trip comes at a time when he is under immense pressure from within the party to expand the cabinet at the earliest. Sources close to Yediyurappa suggest that he is not keen on disrupting the cabinet for now, but has to at least make an effort to meet the party top brass and appease disgruntled legislators including the likes of Umesh Katti. His planned trip is also making a few incumbent ministers jittery over the possibility of them being dropped from the cabinet in case of a rejig. 

Yediyurappa’s son and BJP state vice-president BY Vijayendra, Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai are said to be keen to accompany Yediyurappa on his visit to the national capital. 

Given the state’s financial situation, Yediyurappa is also hoping to meet Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss disbursal of funds. In his meeting with the PM, Yediyurappa hopes to raise concerns related to flood damage and the need for immediate assistance. With Union Home Minister Amit Shah back in hospital on Sunday, Yediyurappa’s plans of meeting him will be on hold.

BJP bickers with NPP over funds, threatens to quit Meghalaya government

GUWAHATI: A war of words has broken out between allies BJP and National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya over alleged misappropriation of Central funds.

The fight has come to such a pass that the BJP threatened to pull out of the NPP-led ruling alliance. The BJP, a constituent of the ruling alliance, has two MLAs and one of them is a minister.

BJP alleged that funds, allocated to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council by the Centre under Special Assistant Grant for the development of under-developed areas, had been misappropriated in the names of ghost bridges, footpaths and repair works of official buildings and guest houses. The NPP rules both the councils.

Demanding a CBI probe in the matter, BJP state president Ernest Mawrie said they would not tolerate any “corrupt practices”.

“We will raise the matter with the state government. If it fails to take cognisance of it, we will be left with no choice but to pull out our support,” Mawrie threatened.

The NPP dared the BJP to withdraw from the coalition. NPP state unit president WR Kharlukhi said the BJP appeared headed towards a “tin-pot dictatorship”.

“If he (Mawrie) is so convinced that we are corrupt, why don’t they pull out of the alliance? They could have discussed the matter within the alliance instead of going to the media,” he said. Meghalaya is the second state in the Northeast where the relationship between the two parties has soured.

In June, all four NPP MLAs in Manipur had pulled out of the BJP-led government. They had returned to the government when the party’s central leadership, including Amit Shah, assured them that their grievances would be addressed.

India’s tally crosses 48 lakh mark with spike of 92,071 cases, 1,136 deaths

With a spike of 92,071 new cases in 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 count breached the 48-lakh mark on Monday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With this latest spike, the coronavirus cases across the country stand at 48,46,428. As per the Health Ministry, there are 9,86,598 active cases while 37,80,108 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated.

The country in the last 24 hours reported 1,136 deaths due to the pathogen taking the overall toll to 79,722.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected State from the infection with 2,80,138 active cases while 29,115 patients have succumbed to the virus in the State. Andhra Pradesh comes second with 95,733 active cases and 4,846 deaths.

BENGALURU:  A delegation of around 20 members of the Kannada film industry met Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday seeking relief measures, including reopening of theatres and subsidies, to revive Sandalwood.The delegation led by actor Shivarajkumar and Jairaj, president, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, met the CM at his official residence. They will meet Deputy Chief Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan on Thursday to take the matter forward.

The delegation expressed confidence in the government’s assurance to solve the problems currently faced by the Kannada film industry.Shivarajkumar, who interacted with the media after the meeting, also took to his official Twitter handle to share details. “Today met honourable chief minister Sri Yediyurappa with my colleagues from the industry and requested an immediate solution for problems like reopening of theatres, electricity and state tax infrastructure etc. He happily agreed to look into these pressing issues and solve them asap,” (sic).

The delegation included leading Kannada actors Yash, Duniya Vijay, actor and politician Thara, Artistes Association secretary Rockline Venkatesh, KFPA secretary K Manju, producer K P Srikanth and distributors, directors, technicians and film chamber members.

A couple of meetings were held at Shivarajkumar’s residence prior to the meeting with the chief minister. The film industry had earlier submitted a request letter to the Karnataka government for relief measures.
Thara said: “The CM is very much aware of the situation surrounding the film industry and that solves half our problem. We will meet DyCM Ashwath Narayan on Thursday.”She added that the CM listened patiently to all the points explained by the Film Chamber president, Shivarajkumar, Yash and others.

Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan tests positive for COVID-19

Prabhu Chavan underwent a test after his car driver, his gunman and personal assistant had contracted the infection and the result came out positive.

BENGALURU: Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan has tested positive for COVID-19, official sources said on Thursday.

The Minister underwent a test on Wednesday after his car driver, his gunman and personal assistant had contracted the infection and the result came out positive.

Officials said Chavan had been under home quarantine in Bidar after his staff tested positive on Tuesday.

The Minister’s office has requested all those who had come into contact with him recently to undergo tests and take precautions.

Chavan is the new addition to the list of Ministers in the B S Yediyurappa cabinet who had tested positive for coronavirus.

Recently Labour Minister A Shivaram Hebbar, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa and Women and Child Development Minister Shashikala Jolle had tested positive for COVID-19.

Last month, Yediyurappa, Health Minister B Sriramulu, Tourism Minister C T Ravi, Agriculture Minister B C Patil, Forest Minister Anand Singh were among those who had tested positive and have now recovered.

Shiv Sena targets former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis over CAG report on ‘Jalyukt Shivar’

MUMBAI: Latching onto the CAG’s adverse remarks about the ‘Jalyukt Shivar’ scheme rolled out by the previous Devendra Fadnavis government, the ruling Shiv Sena on Thursday asked whether he will introspect now.

The ‘Jalyukt Shivar’ scheme had little impact in achieving water neutrality and increasing groundwater level, and its execution was characterised by lack of transparency, the CAG said in its report tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

A sum of Rs 9,633.75 crore was spent on the scheme, a flagship programme of the Fadnavis government (2014-19) that sought to make Maharashtra a drought-free state, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said.

The now-scrapped project involved deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen stop dams, undertaking work on nullahs and digging of farm ponds.

Referring to the findings, the Shiv Sena said any scheme is good on paper, but the real question is about its transparent and effective implementation.

“When there is a problem (with such implementation of a scheme), then the rant about it (the scheme) turns out to be hollow and expenses superfluous,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“Precisely this is what happened in the case of Jalyukt Shivar scheme,” the Shiv Sena, which was part of the Fadnavis government, said.

Had the implementation of the scheme been effective, water sufficiency would have been achieved in parts of the state in the real sense. But it did not happen, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

“The real question is whether those who released high the balloon of the ‘Jalyukt (Shivar)’ will introspect now as to why its burst,” the party said, without naming Fadnavis.

Experts had criticised the scheme during the previous regime. But Fadnavis and others dismissed the criticism terming it as political and wrong, it added.

GANDHINAGAR: Terming coronavirus as an unprecedented challenge, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said India is putting up a well-planned fight against the pandemic under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

The BJP leader asked people to take necessary precautions until a vaccine is found.

“Coronavirus is an unprecedented challenge for us. But we are fighting against it in a well-planned manner under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire world has recognised our efforts,” he said.

Shah, a Lok Sabha member from Gandhinagar inaugurated or performed ground-breaking ceremony for various projects worth Rs 134 crore in the constituency via video-conferencing.

Though coronavirus has slowed down the pace of ongoing developmental works in Gandhinagar, the pandemic won’t be able to hold back Gujarat or India for long, said Shah, who recently recovered from coronavirus infection.
