Precautions still needed for COVID-19, government will educate people on vaacine: Harsh Vardhan

December 21, 2020 by Nasheman

The Union Health Minister said that right now India has just around three lakh active cases and its recovery rate is 95 to 96 percent which is significantly higher than many developed countries.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan

NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said that the worst is over concerning coronavirus in the country but people still need to follow Covid appropriate behaviour to stay safe.

“At a personal level, I think that the worst is over concerning the Covid-19 situation. I have been following this situation right from the time when we had our first case on January 30, 2020. Since then, I have watched everything from the closest of quarters with meticulous precision. If we look at the things in the last three-four months then things are in a declining phase,

“But we need to strictly follow Covid appropriate behaviour and cannot afford to relax on that front,” he added.

Substantiating his point, the Union Health Minister said that right now India has just around three lakh active cases and its recovery rate is 95 to 96 percent which is significantly higher than many developed countries.

“Right now, we have just about three lakh active cases in the country. A few months ago, we had almost 10 lakh cases. Out of over one crore cases that have happened, around 95 lakh persons have already recovered and gone back home,” he said.

“We have the highest recovery rates in the world: between 95 and 96 percent. Compared to some of the developed countries of the world like the USA, Russia, or Brazil whose recovery rate ranges between 60 and 80 percent, we are better placed,” he added.

Dr Vardhan said: “Our fatality rate is also significantly low at 1.45 percent now. I feel the worse may probably be over but with a note of caution.”

“The major tool against Covid-19 will ultimately be masks, hand hygiene and physical distancing that we all need to follow. The troubles that we had to face as a country due to Covid-19 are on the decline. In the coming year, the research of the scientists in the direction of developing a vaccine will also be successful,” he added.

India may begin vaccinating people against coronavirus in January and the government’s first priority has been safety and efficacy of the vaccine, Dr Vardhan said.

“I personally feel that maybe in January in any stage or any week, there can be a time when are in a position to give the first Covid vaccine shot to people of India,” .

The vaccine cannot be forced upon anyone but the government will educate and give the right information to people about it, Vardhan said.

“Vaccine hesitancy issues will be addressed through education. The government will spread awareness and educate people about the vaccine that this is for their own good and benefit,

He also said that the government had prioritised who will get the vaccines after observing international trends and keeping in mind the guidelines of the World Health Organisation.

“The ideal time would be when we reach a point where everyone can be vaccinated. But if there is a limited number of vaccines, it is important to prioritise how who will be the first to get it. Before taking a decision, the government consulted experts, those in the ministries, people in the state governments, and those involved in making vaccines. These decisions have been made while observing international trends and WHO guidelines,” the Union Minister said.

He said the first one crore people to be vaccinated will be the health workers in the private and public sector, while the next two crores to be vaccinated will be frontline workers, sanitation staff, police, and other frontline workers, followed by people over the age of 50.

“Over 80 percent of the people who died due to Covid-19 have been over 50 years. There are about 26 crore people in this category. After that, people below 50 with health issues like BP, heart and kidney problems will be vaccinated,” he said.

“The government will reach out to people to get their vaccines but if someone does not want to take the vaccine, they cannot be forced,” he added.

Earlier, the Union Health Minister had said that India may begin vaccinating people for Covid-19 by January, with the first priority being the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.

On Saturday, the minister had said that the country’s scientists and health experts have worked on the development of an indigenous vaccine and in the upcoming six to seven months India will have the capacity to inoculate about 30 crore people.

There are currently nine Covid-19 vaccine candidates in different phases of clinical trials in India — six are under clinical trials and three in the pre-clinical phase.

First Test: Starc takes four wickets as India shot out for 244

December 18, 2020 by Nasheman

Adelaide, Dec 17: India’s tail-enders contributed precious little as the first innings folded at 244 early on the second day of the first Day/Night Test against Australia here on Friday.

Mitchell Starc (4/53 in 21 overs) and Pat Cummins (3/48 in 21.1 overs) dismissed the last four batsmen for an addition of only 11 runs to the overnight score.

In fact, India lost seven wickets for 56 runs starting with Virat Kohli’s run-out engineered by a poor judgement call from vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.

On Friday, Ravichandran Ashwin (15) got one to rear up from length as Cummins got his second wicket and India’s seventh in the first over of the day.

Wriddhiman Saha (9) also didn’t trouble the scorers getting out on his overnight tally chasing a wide delivery from Starc.

Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah hit a boundary each but that was just a tail-ender’s bravado as the innings folded in just 25 balls on the second day.

If one goes by how pink ball matches at Adelaide have panned out, India have scored at least 75 runs less than what should have been a fighting first innings total.

38 states file anti-trust lawsuit against Google

December 18, 2020 by Nasheman

Denver, Dec 17: A group of 38 states filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Google on Thursday, alleging that the search giant has an illegal monopoly over the online search market that hurts consumers and advertisers.

The lawsuit, announced by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, was filed in federal court in Washington, DC by states represented by bipartisan attorneys general.

Consumers are denied the benefits of competition, including the possibility of higher quality services and better privacy protections. Advertisers are harmed through lower quality and higher prices that are, in turn, passed along to consumers, Weiser said in press release.

The lawsuit was joined by the attorneys general of dozens of states including Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico.

Google did not respond to a request for comment.

The case is the third antitrust salvo to slam Google during the past two months as the Department of Justice and attorneys general from across the US weigh in with their different variations on how they believe the company is abusing its immense power to do bad things that harm other businesses, innovation and even consumers who find its services to be indispensable.

In many ways, the flurry of US antitrust suits represent an attempt to catch up with European regulators who have spent the past several years trying to crack down on Google, mostly with huge fines, to little noticeable effect so far.

On Wednesday, 10 states led by Republican attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Google accusing it of anti-competitive conduct in the online advertising industry, including a deal to manipulate sales with rival Facebook.

It targeted the heart of Google’s business the digital ads that generate nearly all of its revenue, as well as all the money that its corporate parent, Alphabet Inc., depends upon to help finance a range of far-flung technology projects.

The case was registered after the Palakkad municipal secretary filed a complaint with the police saying that “there was an attempt to destroy communal harmony”, an official said.

During the victory celebrations in front of the municipal corporation on Wednesday evening, a few workers were seen in a purported video unfurling a giant banner with ‘Jai Sri Ram’ written in Malayalam and an image of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from top of the building.

Kamal Haasan can't do good, his job is to spoil families, says TN CM Palaniswami

Ariyalur(TN), Dec 17: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Thursday assailed actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan for hosting the reality show ‘Bigg Boss,’ saying the actor “can do no good for the people and his job is only to spoil good families.”

The AIADMK veteran’s criticism of Haasan comes in the backdrop of the actor invoking the legacy of the ruling party’s founder and former chief minister, the late M G Ramachandran, and the MNM chief lashing out at government over corruption.

Palaniswami insisted that only the AIADMK, founded by the late Ramachandran, could lay claim to his legacy and wondered if Haasan “could christen the child of someone else.”

In response to Palaniswami’s criticism, Haasan quipped he was happy the chief minister was also watching the reality show.

Pointing out that Haasan has launched a political party “post retirement,” Palaniswami asked, “what does he know (about politics)?”

“…..He is conducting Bigg Boss. If you see those serials not only children but also good families will get spoiled.”

“One cannot pin hopes on the actor as he can’t do good for the people. His job is only to spoil good families,” the chief minister said, perhaps in his most strong criticism of Haasan so far.

The CM’s comments came in response to a question from a reporter here who sought his reaction to the actor’s tweet on corruption.

“Ask sensible questions. You are trying to give the impression that the actor is a political leader,” Palaniswami chided the scribe.

Haasan, highly critical of the AIADMK government over a number of issues including graft, had earlier tweeted, while referring to the seizure of unaccounted money from various government offices by the DVAC, state officials were following the footsteps of the government on corruption.

Averring that there are several issues concerning people like the interlinking of rivers, farming or giving good advice to youngsters, Palaniswami said Haasan’s films did not give any socially relevant messages to the people as did the films of MGR, as Ramachandran is popularly addressed.

“MGR gave good songs with pertinent messages to the people, especially children. Has Kamal given any song that would do good to people?” Palaniswami asked.

Children and good families “will get spoiled” if they watch Kamal Haasan’s Bigg Boss show, he said.

Later, speaking to reporters at Perambalur, the AIADMK co-coordinator said Haasan “himself accepts that votes can be received only by taking MGR’s name.”

“Because, he (Hassan) does not have individual clout.

AIADMK was founded by MGR, so it is the only movement qualified to use his name. No one else has the moral right to do so,” he said.

“Can he christen the child of someone else?” the CM asked.

Responding to Palaniswami’s tirade, Haasan said in a tweet he was happy “that the chief minister is also watching Bigg Boss,” whose Tamil version he anchors on a private TV channel.

He also recalled lines from a superhit Tamil song from a film featuring MGR to imply some may compromise with all ideals for their needs but he will put an end to such people.

The MNM leader had recently invoked the legacy of Ramachandran, a hugely popular leader, when he had said he was ‘continuing’ the dream of the former chief Minister to make Madurai the second capital of Tamil Nadu.

He had also hinted Ramachandran cannot be confined merely to DMK, from where he started his political journey or his founded AIADMK.

He had said he grew up ‘on the lap of MGR’ while several Tamil Nadu Ministers would not have even seen him personally.

On the vigilance raids, Palaniswami said the DVAC comes under the state government and the checks show its intention to prevent malpractices.

New year parties, dance programmers banned in pubs, clubs in Karnataka due to COVID-19

New year parties, dance programmes banned in pubs, clubs in Karnataka due to COVID-19

Bengaluru, Dec 17: In a fallout of COVID-19, Karnataka will miss the usual New Year day eve celebrations in clubs, pubs and restaurants among other places with the state government banning special DJ dance programmes and parties for four days from December 30.

The government on Thursday issued an order prohibiting such programmes between December 30 and January 2 at clubs, pubs, restaurants and other places where people gather for new year celebrations, citing the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

Ahead of Christmas and New Year, the government also issued a set of guidelines, including barring public from making hand shakes or hugging during the celebrations.

However, there will be no restrictions on pubs, clubs and restaurants in carrying out normal operations in a routine way, the order said.

The guidelines, which also mandated use of green crackers alone during the festivities, will be effective from December 20 till January 2 and were aimed at controlling the spread of the pandemic.

“Keeping in mind public health, there is a need to celebrate Christmas and New Year in a simple and meaningful way. In the wake of this mass parties have been banned across the state at public places, establishments and places where large crowds gather without maintaining social distancing,” the order by Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar said.

Organisers and supervisors at Churches must ensure that a large number of people don’t gather at a time and social distance was maintained. Also people should not indulge in hand shakes or hugging during the festivities.

From December 30 to January 2 parties, special DJ dance programmes and special events at clubs, pubs, restaurants and other places that attract people in large numbers without social distancing have been prohibited.

Gathering of people at public places and roads for celebrations stands prohibited, but normal routine activities can be carried out at these places.

In the guidelines, the Police Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners have been given the authority to impose more restrictions at certain specific roads or places in their jurisdiction.

The order also calls for adhering to COVID related guidelines or restrictions that are already in place to control the spread of virus whose overall count in the state stood at 9.05 lakh as of Thursday with 15,205 active cases.
