Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara fall as third Australia Test goes to wire

January 11, 2021 by Nasheman

India’s hopes in the final session rest on the shoulders of an injured Hanuma Vihari, whose movement is hindered after tweaking a hamstring, and their tailenders.

SYDNEY: Australia removed the dangerous Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara before tea on day five Monday to leave them needing five wickets to win the third Test and India battling for 127 more runs to pull off an unlikely upset.

India’s hopes in the final session rest on the shoulders of an injured Hanuma Vihari, whose movement is hindered after tweaking a hamstring, and their tailenders.

Vihari was not out four and Ravi Ashwin on seven as they reached 280 for five.

Australia grabbed the prize wicket of Pant for 97 as his explosive innings fell short of a century when he was caught by Pat Cummins off Nathan Lyon going for another big hit.

Josh Hazlewood bowled the stoic Pujara, who brought up 6,000 Test runs before his resistance was broken after a battling 77 off 205 balls.

India resumed at 98-2, still needing a further 309 runs after being set a huge 407 to win after Australia declared their second innings at tea Sunday on 312 for six.

No team has ever bettered 288 to clinch victory in the fourth innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Australia achieving that mark against South Africa in 2006.

Australia accounted for openers Shubman Gill (31) and Rohit Sharma (52) before stumps on day four, and when Lyon got captain Ajinkya Rahane in Monday’s second over without adding to his overnight four the end appeared nigh.

But Pant, who took a nasty blow to his elbow while batting in the first innings and didn’t keep wicket on Sunday, surprisingly came in at number five ahead of Vihari and produced some fireworks.

He had no strapping on the hurt elbow and, after settling in and surviving a missed catch by Tim Paine on three, began to hit out, smacking a four and a six off Lyon on consecutive balls.

Batting more like it was a Twenty20 match, he then clobbered two more sixes in a row off Lyon before bringing up his third Test 50 off just 64 balls.

Paine dropped him again on 56, both times off Lyon.

He kept the scoreboard ticking over after lunch and a third Test century looked imminent only for the 23-year-old to throw his bat one time too many.

His wicket shattered a 148-run partnership with Pujara, who resumed the day on nine and slowly reached a second consecutive 50.

In the process he brought up 6,000 career runs, the 11th Indian to achieve the feat, before falling to Hazlewood.

Vihari hurt his hamstring on a quick single, adding to India’s injury list. It is not clear whether Ravindra Jadeja, who has a fractured thumb, will pad up if needed after tea.

India were bowled out for 244 in their first innings in reply to Australia’s 338.

Maharashtra: Bird flu confirmed after 900 hens die in Parbhani poultry farm

January 11, 2021 by Nasheman

The district administration has now decided to cull nearly 8,000 birds in Murumba village where these hens died, Collector Deepak Muglikar informed the media.

Bird Flu

AURANGABAD: Bird flu has been confirmed as the cause of death of around 900 hens in the last few days at a poultry farm in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district, a senior official said on Monday.

The district administration has now decided to cull nearly 8,000 birds in Murumba village where these hens died.

Earlier, Muglikar on Saturday said around 900 hens had died at a poultry farm, run by a Self-Help Group (SHG), in the village and their samples were sent for testing.

“The cause of the death has been confirmed as bird flu. Hence, we have decided to cull all the birds in one-km radius of the place where these deaths took place,” the collector said.

“We have created a prohibitory zone in 10 km radius of the area where the birds died. No birds will be transported from there to any other place. Our medical team is stationed there and it is examining all people of the village,” he said.

There is no need to be panic and the district administration is taking all precautions.

The bird flu outbreak has already been confirmed in Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.

The central government on Sunday said it has directed zoo managements to submit daily reports to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) till their area is declared free from the disease.

The CZA, under the environment ministry, issued an office memorandum saying avian influenza is a scheduled disease under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and reporting such a disease is obligatory for taking appropriate preventive measures against its spread.

BENGALURU: A day after she was summoned by the Central Crime Branch for questioning, Kannada actor Radhika Kumaraswamy on Friday appeared before the investigating officer over allegations of receiving Rs 15 lakh from a conman, Yuvaraj Swamy.

H M Nagaraj, Assistant Commissioner of Police from the CCB told TNIE that Radika was interrogated for about two hours, during which she shared some details regarding money transactions made by Yuvaraj. She claimed that the money was remuneration for an upcoming movie and there was nothing illegal in it. “We may summon her again if required for the investigation.

Her statement has been recorded and it is too early to reveal any more details about the interrogation,” he said. Sources said that the CCB may verify phone call records of Radika. According to CCB sources, Radhika was in Madikeri when summoned, and she arrived for questioning at 11 am.

Radhika said that she was acquainted with Yuvaraj for the last 17 years, as he was her father’s friend and was the family’s astrologer. She spoke to reporters after coming out of the CCB office, claiming that she does not hide anything and everything is transparent. She stated that she would cooperate with the investigation if the CCB summoned her again.

On Wednesday, the CCB had questioned Raviraj, brother of Radhika, for his alleged financial links to Swamy, and later Radhika spoke to reporters and claimed that the money was payment she received to act in an upcoming movie. Meanwhile, Yuvaraj Swamy (52) is a resident of Nagarabhavi, and claims to be an astrologer and vaastu expert. He was arrested by the CCB on December 16.

Ensure visually impaired students get talking laptops: HC
Bengaluru: Noting that there should be a proper mechanism to inform Class 10 and pre-university college students about the scheme of distributing talking laptops, the Karnataka High Court on Friday asked the government to come out with a mechanism ensuring that talking laptops for the eligible visually impaired students are distributed as per the scheme launched in 2014. A division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum passed the order after hearing a PIL by advocate S Umapathi. He contended the scheme was not properly implemented as the laptops were not distributed in 2018-19 and 2019-20 despite budgetary funds.

No restriction on sale of poultry products in Karnataka

January 9, 2021 by Nasheman

Adequate precautionary measures are being taken and no bird flu cases have been reported in Karnataka, Chavan stated after the meeting.

Poultry farmers

BENGALURU: In an attempt to allay any fears over consuming chicken and eggs after cases of bird flu were reported in neighbouring Kerala and some other states, the Karnataka Government on Friday clarified that there is no restriction on the sale of poultry products in the state.

“There is no restriction on the sale of poultry products and people can consume them without any apprehensions,” Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan said, after chairing a virtual meeting with Deputy Commissioners of all the districts to review the situation.

Adequate precautionary measures are being taken and no bird flu cases have been reported in Karnataka, Chavan stated after the meeting. The statement from the minister came after chicken prices dropped drastically at some places, including Davangere and Chitradurga. Due to the fear of bird flu, the demand for poultry products, including eggs, has dropped noticeably.

The minister said that except for poultry products from Kerala, Karnataka has not imposed restrictions on transportation of poultry products from any other state. The state has banned entry of poultry products from Kerala and also sounded a high alert across the state, especially in the border districts. Officials of the Animal Husbandry, Forest, Rural Development, Police and other departments have been asked to work in coordination to keep a close watch on the situation.

Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan said officials in bordering districts of Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Mysuru and Chamar-ajanagar have been told to be extra vigilant and also report cases of unnatural bird deaths. They have also been told to closely watch poultry farms and sanctuaries.

CHANDIGARH: Over 100 British Members of Parliament across party lines have written a letter to PM Boris Johnson, requesting him to address the issue of farmers’ agitation in India with PM Narendra Modi.

It read: “Many constituents, especially those emanating from Punjab and other parts of India, were horrified to see footage of water cannon, tear gas and brute force being used against hundreds of thousands of peacefully protesting farmers. The issue has so galvanised the Indian diaspora community, especially those of Punjabi and Sikh background,  and others who have land or links to farming in India, that tens of thousands engaged in global protests, including in towns and cities across UK.’’

“We believe that your January India visit has now been cancelled but you intend to meet your Indian counterpart soon. Given the urgency of this matter, could you please confirm that you will definitely convey to the Indian Prime Minister the heartfelt anxieties of our constituents our hopes for a speedy resolution to the current deadlock and also for the democratic human right of citizens to peaceful protest? We look forward to your timely response so that we can inform our constituents accordingly,’’ it stated.

The letter goes on to add that another cross-party letter addressing the concern was also forwarded to the foreign secretary Dominic Raab to ensure that he raised the matter with his counterpart, EAM S Jaishankar.

A move, Dominic has confirmed, but he did not address the issue with PM Modi during his December meeting.

Government says avian flu confirmed in six states; over 1.6 lakh birds to be culled in Haryana

January 9, 2021 by Nasheman

Bird Flu

NEW DELHI: More bird deaths were reported from some parts of the country on Friday amid cases of avian influenza, with the Haryana government planning to cull over 1.60 lakh birds in Panchkula district after samples tested positive for the disease, even as the Centre said that bird flu has been confirmed so far in six states.

The Centre said bird flu has been confirmed so far in Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat, and asked these six states to contain the disease as per the action plan.

Unusual mortality of 16 birds has also been reported at DDA park Hastsal Village in the national capital, and samples have been sent to a testing lab.”So far, the disease has been confirmed from six states (Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat).

“It is learnt that culling operations have been completed in both the affected districts of Kerala. The disinfection process is underway,” according to an official statement.

States that are still unaffected by Avian Influenza (AI) have been requested to keep a vigil on any unusual mortality among birds and to report immediately so that necessary measures are taken in the fastest possible time, it added.

Central teams have been deployed to visit the affected states of Kerala, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh for monitoring and for epidemiological investigation.

The government said that in Haryana, there has been confirmation of Avian Influenza positive samples from ICAR-NIHSAD in poultry (two poultry farms) of the Panchkula district.

Positive samples have also been reported in migratory birds in the Junagadh district, Gujarat, and in crows in Sawai Madhopur, Pali, Jaisalmer and Mohar districts of Rajasthan.

Therefore, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has suggested the affected states to contain the disease as per the Action Plan on Avian Influenza.

Over 1.60 lakh birds of five poultry farms in Haryana’s Panchkula district are set to be culled as some poultry samples there have tested positive for the avian flu, Agriculture minister J P Dalal said on Friday.

The employees of these poultry farms too would be examined by the health department, Dalal further said, adding they would also be given anti-viral medicines.

Notably, over four lakh poultry birds died at some farms in Haryana’s Panchkula district over the past several days.

Fresh cases of birds death were reported in parts of Rajasthan, taking the tally to 2,166.

The avian influenza subtype H5N8 has been detected in 11 districts of the state, including state capital.

As per Animal Husbandry Department, 329 deaths of birds, including 223 crows, 11 peacocks, 55 pigeons and 40 others were reported in the state today.

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has allowed 100 per cent occupancy in cinema halls in the state but asserted following precautionary measures in the view of Covid-19.

She was speaking at the inauguration of the 26th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival 2021 via video conference on Friday.

“Due to the pandemic, only 50 per cent occupancy in cinema halls is allowed. Now I am allowing 100 per cent occupancy but proper care needs to be taken,” she said.

Actor Shahrukh Khan also participated in the event virtually. The Kolkata Film Festival, which was started in the year 1995, is being organised virtually in the view of Covid-19 pandemic.

Recently a similar notification was issued by the Tamil Nadu government to increase the occupancy in cinemas, theatres, and multiplexes to 100 per cent capacity.

However, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary stating that the state government’s move is the dilution of the Ministry of Home Affair’s order.

Bhalla asked the chief secretary to immediately issue the necessary order to bring their guidelines in line with the MHA guidelines dated December 28, 2020, and inform compliance to this Ministry.
