Fascinating diamond facts for the rarest birthstone of April

April 15, 2021 by Nasheman

Diamonds have an unmatched beauty, its enigmatic energy or simply a legacy that’s billions of years old captivates people all over the world by its mysterious allure.

April being the month of diamonds here are a few fascinating facts about the creation, discovery, and history of a diamond will make you fall in love with the magical gemstone even more, giving the April-born ladies an extra reason to put sparkling diamond jewelry on their birthday wish list.

1.    A Miracle of nature – Aspure and as old as the Earth itself; a diamond is a natural miracle over a 3 billion years in the making. Formed long before dinosaurs roamed the earth, some say that diamonds are even older than the stars, maybe that’s why the sparkle of your diamond often rivals that of the stars twinkling in the sky and why the light of the diamond on your finger, forever reflects the beautiful memories of a lifetime.

2.    The strength of a diamond – Although they look delicate and beautiful, but diamonds are the most hardest natural substance on the planet, 58 times harder than the next mineral on Earth!

3.    A diamond is indestructible – The word diamond derives from the Greek word ‘adamas’, which in turn means indestructible – a fitting name for this everlasting precious stone, that is an eternal symbol of a lifelong commitment. It is no wonder then that diamonds are regarded as the ultimate symbol of love and strength. History proves many ancient cultures believed that diamonds gave the wearer strength and courage during battle, and some kings wore diamonds on their armor as they rode into battle.

4.    Diamonds are rare – Diamonds are one of the world’s most precious, beautiful and rare possessions in the world. If you were to gather together all the diamonds ever polished since the beginning of time, they fit in a London double-decker bus, with room to spare. That is probably why when you are gifted/ or gift yourself a diamond you truly feel special to be wearing one of the rarest and most precious diamonds that has been created by Mother Nature.

5.    The biggest diamond – Did you know, a diamond over one carat in weight is one in a million and the biggest known diamond in the universe weighs 2.27 thousand trillion tonnes, or 10 billion trillion carats. This is the equivalent of 179 trillion double decker buses.

6.    The largest diamond: Cullinan – The Cullinan, weighing in at 530.20 carats, is the largest cut diamond in the world which originated from the De Beers Premier mine. It was cut from a huge 3,106 carat rough diamond, discovered in the Premier mine in Transvaal, South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was eventually yielded nine major, and 107 smaller brilliant cut diamonds and the two largest diamonds can be found in the British Crown Jewels.

7.    Not all diamonds are white in colour– D-to-Z color diamonds are the most widely used in jewelry, but did you know diamonds come in all colors of the rainbow? Natural-colored diamonds, blue, green, orange and red are the rarest; while yellow and brown are the most common ones used worldwide.

8.    The 1% club – If diamonds are rare then Forevermark diamonds are the rarest of the rare. Less than 1% of the world’s diamonds are eligible to become Forevermark. If all the worlds diamonds fit in a double decker bus, then Forevermark inscribed diamonds, would fill just over two tires of the bus. Outshining every other diamond in the world, is it eligible to be inscribed with the Forevermark inscription! Invisible to the naked eye, this inscription includes the Forevermark icon and the diamond’s own, unique number at the heart of the diamond that identifies it as exclusively yours and unlike any other diamond in the world.

9.    The most expensive diamond: The Pink Star – Did you know the most expensive and beautiful pink diamond, known as the Pink Star was sold in Hong Kong for more than $71,000,000 and weighs 59.60 carats.

10.  How are diamonds formed – Diamonds are formed under 45-60 Kbar of pressure. This corresponds to a depth of 125-200 kilometers below the Earth’s surface- around fifty thousand times atmospheric pressure. The pressure is equivalent to putting the point of the Eiffel Tower upside down on your hand.

11.  A unique story – Each rough diamond has a natural pattern telling a unique story. No diamonds two are alike, each is as unique as a snowflake: precious and rare.

Election Commission biased against Mamata Banerjee: Shiv Sena

April 14, 2021 by Nasheman

Election Commission biased against Mamata Banerjee: Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Wednesday alleged that the Election Commission was “biased” against Mamata Banerjee, after the poll panel recently barred the West Bengal chief minister from campaigning for 24 hours over certain remarks made by her.

The stature of a constitutional body like the Election Commission (EC) should not be demeaned for political benefits, an editorial in the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said.

Assembly elections are currently underway in West Bengal and the Shiv Sena, which is not contesting the polls, has extended its support to Trinamool Congress head Banerjee.

“The Election Commission is biased against Mamata Banerjee. It is our request to the EC with folded hands that it should not listen to the BJP alone, but to everyone. It should not be biased,” the Marathi daily said.

Everyone has lost the sense of decorum (during campaign) in West Bengal, but Banerjee alone is being punished for it, the editorial claimed.

“The EC has busted the myth of everyone being treated equal before law and it chose the land of West Bengal to do so. It seems to have forgotten that West Bengal is the land of revolutionaries and rebels,” it said.

Mamata Banerjee’s lone battle will be remembered in history, irrespective of the outcome of this election, the editorial said.

The EC seems to be really irked with Banerjee for dubbing the model code of conduct as the “Modi code of conduct”, it said.

But, the ground reality in West Bengal is concerning as the Centre-deployed CRPF jawans opened fire on a mob instead of controlling the violence, the Sena said.

The Centre should take the responsibility for the violence, it said.

“There is no doubt that the reputation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is at stake, but their path to win the state (polls) is against the democracy and freedom of people,” the editorial alleged.

The stature of a constitutional body like the EC should not be demeaned for political benefits, it added.

“Why is the EC not noticing that after Modi’s Bangladesh visit, there has been a rise in violence in West Bengal?” the Marathi publication asked.

“Mamata Banerjee has alleged that the reason behind Modi’s visits to the US and Bangladesh was same political benefit,” it said.

The editorial also backed Banerjee over her strong criticism of the Centre and BJP leaders who have been making controversial statements during campaigning in West Bengal.

A video clip of a BJP leader’s appeal to locals to not be afraid of the (West Bengal) state police has gone viral, it said, adding that what happened in Cooch Behar and Sitalkuchi was not different from the leader’s comments.

What wrong did Mamata do if she strongly criticised it? the Sena asked.

“The EC has lost its stature and it is surrounded by a fog of suspicion over its role,” the editorial claimed.

It is surprising that BJP leaders, who have allegedly said there would be more incidents like Cooch Behar and Sitalkuchi violence, are not charged with violation of the model code of conduct, the Sena said.

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny threatens to sue prison for not giving him Quran

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny threatens to sue prison for not giving him Quran

Moscow: Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has alleged that the jail authorities where he is jailed are withholding the Quran which he intended to study while serving his sentence. In an Instagram post, Navalny has threatened to sue the prison in this regard.

“The thing is they’re not giving my Quran.” He said in an Instagram post announcing his first lawsuit against the prison officials.

In the post, Navalny added that deeply studying the Quran was one of the several self-improvement goals he had set for himself while in prison.

The claim comes as Navalny, a Christian, remains on a hunger strike in protest against an alleged refusal by authorities to allow his physician to examine him behind bars after he developed severe back and leg pain.

He came under fire early in his political career for making nationalistic comments and deriding immigrants in Russia from predominantly Muslim countries in Central Asia.

The Kremlin critic said he has not been given access to any of the books he brought or ordered over the past month because they all need to be “inspected for extremism”, which officials say takes three months.

“Books are our everything, and if I have to sue for my right to read, then I’ll be suing,” he said.

A court-ordered Navalny in February to serve two and a half years in prison for violating the terms of his probation, including when he was convalescing in Germany, from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.

Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh appears before CBI

April 14, 2021 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh appeared before the CBI on Wednesday for questioning in connection with the allegations of corruption levelled against him by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh, an official said.

Deshmukh reached the DRDO guest house, where a team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is camping to, in suburban Santacruz around 10 am, he said.

The CBI on Monday issued a notice calling Deshmukh to join the agency’s probe into the allegations levelled against him by Param Bir Singh and suspended police officer Sachin Waze, the official said.

Waze, an assistant police inspector, is under investigation in the case of an explosive-laden SUV found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence in south Mumbai.

The CBI is conducting a preliminary enquiry into the allegations against Deshmukh levelled by Singh after he was removed from the post of Mumbai police commissioner.

The allegations were reportedly corroborated by Waze in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is conducting a probe into the SUV case, officials earlier said.

The Bombay High Court last week directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the allegations levelled by Singh against Deshmukh.

In a letter, Singh had claimed that Deshmukh asked Waze to allegedly extort over Rs 100 crore a month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai.

Deshmukh has denied the allegations.

So far, the CBI has recorded statements of Param Bir Singh, Sachin Waze, Deputy Commissioner of Police Raju Bhujbal, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjay Patil, advocate Jayshree Patil and hotel owner Mahesh Shetty.

It also questioned Deshmukh’s personal assistant Kundan Shinde and personal secretary Sanjeev Palande on Sunday.

China-India border tensions ‘remain high’ despite some force pullbacks: US Intel Report

April 14, 2021 by Nasheman

China-India border tensions 'remain high' despite some force pullbacks: US Intel Report

Washington: China-India border tensions “remain high” despite some force pullbacks this year, the US intelligence community has told Congress, asserting that Beijing seeks to use coordinated, whole-of-government tools to demonstrate its growing strength and compel regional neighbours to acquiesce to its preferences, including its claims over disputed territory.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said in its latest annual threat assessment report to the US Congress that Beijing will continue to promote the multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to expand its economic, political and military presence abroad, while trying to reduce waste and exploitative practices, which have led to international criticism.

The BRI is a multi-billion-dollar initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he came into power in 2013. It aims to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes.

“China-India border tensions remain high, despite some force pullbacks this year. China’s occupation since May 2020 of contested border areas is the most serious escalation in decades and led to the first lethal border clash between the two countries since 1975, the report said.

“As of mid-February, after multiple rounds of talks, both sides were pulling back forces and equipment from some sites along the disputed border, it said.

The border standoff between the armies of India and China erupted on May 5 last following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake areas and both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed withdrawal of troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February in line with an agreement on disengagement. India has been insisting that a resolution of outstanding issues including in Depsang, Hot Springs and Gogra is essential for overall ties between the two countries.

According to the report, China seeks to use coordinated, whole-of-government tools to demonstrate its growing strength and compel regional neighbours to acquiesce to Beijing’s preferences, including its claims over disputed territory and assertions of sovereignty over Taiwan.

In the South China Sea, Beijing will continue to intimidate rival claimants and will use growing numbers of air, naval, and maritime law enforcement platforms to signal to Southeast Asian countries that China has effective control over contested areas. China is similarly pressuring Japan over contested areas in the East China Sea.

China has been fast expanding military and economic influence in the Indo-Pacific region, triggering concern in various countries of the region and beyond. It is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in both the South China Sea and East China Sea.

Beijing has built up and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region. Both areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources and are vital to global trade. China claims almost all of the South China Sea. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims over the strategically vital area.

Beijing will press Taiwan authorities to move toward unification and will condemn what it views as increased US-Taiwan engagement, the report said.

China views Taiwan as a rebel province that must be reunified, even by force.

“We expect that friction will grow as Beijing steps up attempts to portray Taipei as internationally isolated and dependent on the mainland for economic prosperity, and as China continues to increase military activity around the island, it said.

China’s increasing cooperation with Russia on areas of complementary interest includes defence and economic cooperation, it added.

China will try to increase its influence using vaccine diplomacy, giving countries favored access to the COVID-19 vaccines it is developing. It will also promote new international norms for technology and human rights, emphasising state sovereignty and political stability over individual rights, the ODNI said.

China will remain the top threat to US technological competitiveness as the Chinese Communist Party targets key technology sectors and proprietary commercial and military technology from US and allied companies and research institutions associated with defence, energy, finance, and other sectors.

Beijing uses a variety of tools, from public investment to espionage and theft, to advance its technological capabilities, it said.

According to the report, China will continue expanding its global intelligence footprint to better support its growing political, economic, and security interests around the world, increasingly challenging the United States’ alliances and partnerships.

Across East Asia and the western Pacific, which Beijing views as its natural sphere of influence, China is attempting to exploit doubts about the US commitment to the region, undermine Taiwan’s democracy, and extend Beijing’s influence, it said.

Beijing has been intensifying efforts to shape the political environment in the United States to promote its policy preferences, mold public discourse, pressure political figures whom Beijing believes oppose its interests, and muffle criticism of China on such issues as religious freedom and the suppression of democracy in Hong Kong, it said.

Cop, police chief resign 2 days after Black motorist’s death

Cop, police chief resign 2 days after Black motorist's death

Brooklyn Center (Minnesota): A white police officer who fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb resigned Tuesday, as did the city’s police chief moves that the mayor said he hoped would help heal the community and lead to reconciliation after two nights of protests and unrest.

But police and protesters faced off once again after nightfall Tuesday, with hundreds of protesters gathering again at Brooklyn Center’s heavily guarded police headquarters, now ringed by concrete barriers and a tall metal fence, and where police in riot gear and National Guard soldiers stood watch. Murderapolis was scrawled with black spray paint on a concrete barrier.

Whose street? Our street! the crowd chanted under a light snowfall.

About 90 minutes before the curfew deadline, state police announced over a loudspeaker that the gathering had been declared unlawful and ordered the crowds to disperse. That quickly set off confrontations, with protesters launching fireworks toward the station and throwing objects at police, who launched flashbangs and gas grenades, and then marched in a line to force back the crowd.

You are hereby ordered to disperse, authorities announced, warning that anyone not leaving would be arrested. The state police said the dispersal order came before the 10 p.m. curfew because protesters were trying to take down the fencing and throwing rocks at police. The number of protesters dropped rapidly over the next hour, until only a few remained. Police also ordered all media to leave the scene.

The resignations from Officer Kim Potter and Police Chief Tim Gannon came two days after the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center. Potter, a 26-year veteran, had been on administrative leave following Sunday’s shooting, which happened as the Minneapolis area was already on edge over the trial of an officer charged in George Floyd’s death.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott said at a news conference that the city had been moving toward firing Potter when she resigned. Elliott said he hoped her resignation would bring some calm to the community, but that he would keep working toward full accountability under the law.

We have to make sure that justice is served, justice is done. Daunte Wright deserves that. His family deserves that, Elliott said.

A decision on whether prosecutors will charge Potter could come as soon as Wednesday. Meanwhile, the cities of Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis and St. Paul imposed 10 p.m. curfews.

Gannon has said he believed Potter mistakenly grabbed her gun when she was going for her Taser. She can be heard on her body camera video shouting Taser! Taser! However, protesters and Wright’s family members say there’s no excuse for the shooting and it shows how the justice system is tilted against Blacks, noting Wright was stopped for an expired car registration and ended up dead.

Activists who attended the mayor’s news conference called for sweeping changes to the Brooklyn Center Police Department and sharply criticized the acting police chief, Tony Gruenig, for not yet having a plan.

Elliott said the department has about 49 police officers, none of whom live in Brooklyn Center. He said he didn’t have information on racial diversity at hand but that we have very few people of color in our department.

The modest suburb just north of Minneapolis has seen its demographics shift dramatically in recent years. In 2000, more than 70 per cent of the city was white. Today, a majority of residents are Black, Asian or Hispanic.

After stopping Wright for the expired license plates, police tried to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. The warrant was for his failure to appear in court on charges that he fled from officers and possessed a gun without a permit during an encounter with Minneapolis police in June.

Body camera footage released Monday shows Wright struggling with police when Potter shouts, I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser! She draws her weapon after the man breaks free from police outside his car and gets back behind the wheel.

After firing a single shot from her handgun, the car speeds away, and Potter says, Holy (expletive)! I shot him.

Wright died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the medical examiner.

Protests began within hours.

In her one-paragraph letter of resignation, Potter said, I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately.”

Wright’s father, Aubrey Wright, told ABC’s Good Morning America that he rejects the explanation that Potter mistook her gun for her Taser.

I lost my son. He’s never coming back. I can’t accept that. A mistake? That doesn’t even sound right. This officer has been on the force for 26 years. I can’t accept that, he said.

Chyna Whitaker, mother of Daunte’s son, said at a news conference that she felt police stole my son’s dad from him.

The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association said in a statement Tuesday that no conclusions should be made until the investigation is complete.
