Tourists will not be ‘harassed’ for COVID-19 report on Himachal borders: CM

April 13, 2021 by Nasheman

DHARAMSHALA: Tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh will not be “harassed” for a coronavirus negative test report on the state’s borders, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Tuesday.

“We have taken care of our tourism industry to ensure it does not suffer this session as the corona-virus pandemic affected it last year. So, in the SOP released for the industry, we have put in place a mechanism to monitor it accordingly. Tourists and other visitors will not be harassed by stopping for corona reports on the state’s borders because it causes a lot of inconvenience and difficulty to them.

As majority of the visitors will stay in hotels, the administration has put in place a mechanism to check the visitors from the seven states on their arrival at the place of their stay, he added.

The Himachal Pradesh government on Sunday made it mandatory for people coming from seven states which have witnessed a spike in coronavirus cases to show a COVID-19 negative test report on entering the state.

Thakur had said then that people coming from Punjab, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh need to carry a negative RT-PCR report not earlier than 72 hours while visiting Himachal Pradesh from April 16.

The chief minister arrived here this morning from Shimla on a day’s visit.

Karnataka private hospitals told to reserve 50% beds for COVID-19 patients

April 13, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: As the Karnataka government has asked private hospitals to reserve 50 per cent of the beds for the novel coronavirus patients as was done during the first wave, Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Monday.

“The private hospitals have agreed to reserve 50 per cent beds for COVID-19 patients within a week. Patients without symptoms and with mild symptoms will be isolated in hotels and COVID care centres. Only patients with severe conditions will be treated in hospitals,” the Minister said.

Regarding the shortage of Remdesivir, Sudhakar said drug companies have stopped its production.

“We need this drug. Private hospitals have complained of the medicine not being available in the market. We will discuss the issue with the drug controller and supply the medicine to private hospitals at government rates,” said Dr Sudhakar.

To a question on the availability of equipment, he said the government has taken measures to ensure sufficient quantities of ventilators and oxygen.

If required, industrial oxygen would be used, he added.

Spices of life: Women lead the way in this Chitradurga masala factory

April 12, 2021 by Nasheman

CHITRADURGA: While business can create a stressful and cut-throat atmosphere for employees, Maruthi Masala, set up four decades ago in Chitradurga district, is cut from different cloth. Most of the employees are women and their welfare is very important for the family that runs the masala manufacturing firm.

Starting with Rs 20,000 in their small house in Chikkagondanahalli in Chitradurga district, they now run a business with the latest machinery, which is one of the biggest masala-making firms in Central Karnataka. There are also plans to expand across the state. “Supporting women was our aim. Some of these women have been with us for three decades and have worked hard for the success of the business. It is because of them that the industry has survived,” says T Nagaraj, Lakshmamma and Thippeswamy’s son.

“After facing a lot of hardship, I decided to start working. I heard of this masala unit which gave jobs only to women, and joined. Now, I not only take care of my children’s education, but also my entire family. We are indebted to Nagaraj,” says Mehrunissa (35), from Maradihalli, who has worked at the unit for four years.

Sumangalamma (58) has been at the unit for three decades. “My life was in a shambles when my husband passed away. I received a great deal of support from the founder Thippeswamy and his family. They not only took care of me, but provided me with quarters on the premises and treated me like family. It is because of them that I survived,” she says. In the beginning, Lakshmamma taught the employees how to roast and grind the spices, and the proportions that would give the masalas their unique flavour. She continues to monitor the quality to this day, checking every batch of products.

“Quality is very important for us. We check the quality of each batch of ingredients before it is used. We have also sought help from the Central Food and Technological Research Institute to procure cleaning, roasting, grinding and packing machines,” says Nagaraj, an Arts graduate. It is a matter of pride that the brand has customers of all categories – from big ones to individual households – thanks to the range of quantities they sell. “We have reached all sections of society because we have packets from 50gm to 1kg.

“Because of this, our products are popular in Davanagere and Chitradurga,” he says, adding
that most batches are sold out within a fortnight of manufacture. The road to success was a hard one, Nagaraj recalls. “During the initial days, my father carried masala packets by bus to Davanagere town, then rented a bicycle and travelled across the district to distribute the packets. That’s how dedicated he was,” he says.

Even after they set up a proper factory in Chikkagondanahalli in 1985, there were many logistical hurdles to overcome. Power supply was erratic, and transportation was difficult. Finally, the family decided to move to an area set aside by the Karnataka Industrial Development Areas Board (KIADB) in Chitradurga district. Another reason for the success of the unit was the credit extended by the Karnataka State Financial Corporation, he says.

What they make
Sambar powder
Chilli, coriander, turmeric powder
Chicken, mutton masala, garam masala
Puliyogare, vangibath, bisibelebath masala

Starting with Rs 20,000
in their small house in Chikkagondanahalli in Chitradurga district, they now run a business with the latest machinery, which is one of the biggest masala-making firms in Central Karnataka

CM’s recognition
Karnataka State Finance Corporation, which has provided Maruthi Masala several loans since the 1980s, conferred the Golden Jubilee award to the firm in 2010. It was presented by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa (during his first tenure)

Bangladesh plans nationwide holiday amid soaring COVID-19 cases

April 12, 2021 by Nasheman

DHAKA: Bangladesh is planning to enforce a nationwide general holiday on April 14 to contain the cases of coronavirus as the country reported 5,819 new cases of COVD-19 in the last 24 hours, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a senior health official said on Sunday.

“There are plans to enforce a nationwide general holiday to contain the infection spike from April 14, tightening an existing lockdown,” the senior health official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.

He said restrictions under the general holiday is being worked out. The total number of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh has so far reached to 6,84,756 cases with 5,819 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Zia tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, a year after she was released from jail temporarily amidst the pandemic.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs

April 12, 2021 by Nasheman

CHENNAI: Opener Nitish Rana (80) and Rahul Tripathi (53) hit fluent half-centuries to script Kolkata Knight Rides’ a comfortable 10-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League match, here on Sunday.

Hyderabad lost skipper David Warner (3) and Wriddhiman Saha (7) early and were always playing a catch-up game despite Jonny Bairstow’s fighting half-century.

They could manage 177 for five in the end.

Jonny Bairstow (55) and Manish Pandey (61 not out) formed a partnership at a steady run rate.

Australian pacer Cummins broke their 92-run stand when he had Bairstow caught at backward point by Rana.

SRH needed 70 off the last five overs.

Mohammed Nabi (14) was hit on his neck by Krishna but the Afghan responded with a cracking six.

He went after a slower one but only to be caught by Eoin Morgan.

The 19-year-old Abdul Samad, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, creamed off two sixes and a four off Cummins in the penultimate over to keep SRH in hunt.

Requiring 22 runs from the last over, KKR’s Andre Russell held his nerves to deny SRH a win.

Earlier, left-handed opener Rana struck the ball hard and clean to provide his side a confident start after they were asked to take first strike.

His strokes on the off-side — the drives and cuts – were of highest quality and a treat to the eye.

Neither Bhuvneshwar Kumar nor T Natarajan could stop Rana from hitting boundaries even as Subhman Gill was quiet initially.

Sandeep Sharma was hit for three boundaries in a row by him.

Gill opened up his arms to hit a massive straight six off Natarajan to make it even better for KKR.

However, the run-flow was affected when ever-reliable Rashid got the ball in his hands.

He also provided the breakthrough when he deceived Gill with a wrong’un to find the stumps.

Rana though kept going strong, completing his half-century with a six off Vijay Shankar after surviving an LBW appeal off Rashid.

He got the decision overturned, taking the DRS call.

Rana’s six-hitting continued after getting his fifty as he punished Natarajan and Sandeep again.

His colleague at the other end Rahul Tripathi also stroked confidently and fluently.

He smashed a massive six off Bhuvneshwar and then followed it up with a cheeky four in the third-man region.

He completed his fifty with another boundary off Bhuvneshwar but was dismissed by Natarajan soon after when he top-edged a ball.

Rashid too sent back dangerous Andre Russell (5) back.

Mohammed Nabi (2/32) got rid of Rana and Eoin Morgan (2) off successive balls in the 18th over.

April 12, 2021 by Nasheman

Pramesh Jain

Amid a spike in coronavirus cases in the state, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar on Sunday said that the experts have warned of peak in infections by the first week of May.

Karnataka continued to report a surge in COVID-19 cases after the state recorded 10,250 COVID-19 cases on Sunday including 7,584 cases in Bengaluru.

Twenty seven deaths were reported in Bengaluru on Sunday taking the total number of deaths to 4,815.

However, the number of tests conducted on Saturday which is reflected in Sunday’s data stood at 1.32 lakh.

On Friday it was below 1 lakh. The positivity rate for the day on Sunday stood at 7.72 % and the case fatality rate stood at 0.39 %.

The cases reported on Saturday were 6,955 in the state and 4,384 in Bengaluru, the state capital.

The jump in cases was linked to the increased testing numbers in the state going up from 98,000 to 1.32 lakh on Sunday.

The total number of COVID 19 positive cases stood at 10.65 lakh.Of the 10,250 COVID 19 positive cases reported on Sunday,as many as 7584 cases were reported in Bengaluru Urban alone.

Meanwhile,as many as 2638 patients were discharged on Sunday, taking the total number of discharges to 9.83 lakh.Of the total 69,225 active cases in the state,as many as 440 patients are admitted in intensive care units across designated hospitals.

The number of COVID 19 related deaths reported on Sunday was 40, taking the total number of deaths in the state due to COVID 19 to 12,889.

Hospitals in Bengaluru are reporting an increased number of COVID-19 cases.A 31-year-old man who had tested positive for the virus died early on Saturday morning reportedly when he was searching for an intensive care unit (ICU) bed.

Taking seriously the issue,The BBMP chief health officer has sent a show-cause notice to Mahaveer Jain Hospital,Vasanthnagar, seeking an explanation on why the patient was denied a bed in spite of blocking it through CHBMS.It said,Since you have denied admission, which eventually led to death, you are hereby directed to give an explanation within 24 hours of receipt of this notice the release says.

The technical advisory committee advising the Karnataka government on Sunday said that the second wave of COVID-19 infections is expected to peak in the first week of May in the state and reduce by the end of May.

This marks a shift in the predicted timeline. Health Minister K Sudhakar had earlier predicted that the state will see 6,500 cases everyday around April 20.

Speaking to reporters, after meeting with the technical advisory committee (TAC) and expert committee on COVID-19 constituted by the government, he said the infections may peak during the next two to three weeks by May first week and decline by the end of that month.

They (experts) have given several suggestions and I have asked them to submit in a report format, which I will discuss with the Chief Minister and other senior Ministers and officials.

The suggestions are with scientific evidence, based on which the government will take necessary measures in the days to come,” he added.

Noting that experts will not be giving any suggestions that will hamper the economic activities, the Minister said but they have asked us to control people from gathering at places for various reasons, at any cost.

Citing inputs offered by experts on the trajectory of the infection in the days to come,Sudhakar said when the cases peak, the number of people requiring hospitalisation or in need of bed will increase, also we will have to strictly monitor those in home isolation.

The experts have most importantly advised about procuring certain medicines from now itself and supplying them to private hospitals too, also about strengthening telemedicine, tele ICU and triaging,he said.

Pointing out that Ugadi and other festivals are coming up and people will travel to their native place from Bengaluru and may carry the virus along with them, Sudhakar said experts have stressed on the need for it to be checked.

We will not get to know about the spike and spread immediately, we will get to know after about 10 days as it happened during the first wave.

Inter-state travels have to be monitored very strictly according to experts,he added.

On Sunday as many as 70,000 people were vaccinated, taking the total number of people who are vaccinated in the state to 58.51 lakh.
