Satish Jarkiholi’s children Rahul, Priyanka join Belagavi politics

June 18, 2021 by Nasheman

BELAGAVI: Priyanka and Rahul are set to join the hurly-burly of Karnataka politics. Not the Gandhis, mind you, and not as leaders but as grassroots Congress workers. These siblings are also from a politically influential family.KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi’s children Rahul and Priyanka were on Thursday introduced to Congress workers in the Belagavi Congress office.

While Jarkiholi said they would be involved in strengthening the party, it appears to be a tactical move to launch the next-gen into the family business, especially with elections in another two years. The Jarkiholi family already has three heavyweight MLAs — two in the BJP and one in the Congress. Giving advice to his kids, besides other youth leaders of the party who aspire to become future MLAs, Satish said, “Before dreaming big in politics, young leaders must involve themselves in social service and travel widely to understand the people’s problems. Young politicians should struggle to respond to the problems of the poor, downtrodden and weaker sections of society. They should be recognised by their work before they enter big-time politics.’’

In an attempt to brush off the dynast tag that is bound to stick to his children, Jarkiholi assured the people that the siblings would work hard and shoulder responsibilities sincerely in the larger interest of society. Rahul, who has been travelling with his father for several political and social activities for the past two years, said he is trying to understand politics, and is keen to promote rural talent.

He is working on several projects to help talented youngsters from rural areas in sports and cultural activities. Priyanka, who holds up her father as her role model, recalls his many services as politician and leader for 30 years. Expressing her desire to work for people’s welfare in Belagavi region, Priyanka said she is yet to learn a lot.

If the intended purpose of BJP general secretary Arun Singh’s visit to Karnataka was to iron out the differences in the state unit

June 18, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: If the intended purpose of BJP general secretary Arun Singh’s visit to Karnataka was to iron out the differences in the state unit, Thursday was a free for all. The simmering dissatisfaction against Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and his government among sections of BJP leaders burst out with legislators making allegations of corruption and nepotism publicly as well as behind closed doors.

Barely hours after Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh urged leaders to refrain from making public statements, MLC H Vishwanath, MLAs Arvind Bellad, S R Vishwanath and M P Renukacharya defied the diktat.

“No minister is happy with the B S Yediyurappa government because of his family’s interference. His son interferes too much in every department, be it tenders in the Irrigation Department or sale of land to a steel company,” said H Vishwanath about his interaction with Arun Singh. He was one of the 17 MLAs who quit the Congress-JDS coalition government in 2019 to join the BJP, but has been miffed over being denied a cabinet berth.

Even as his statement came as much embarrassment, Arun Singh brushed it aside. “Vishwanath is new to the party. He doesn’t know our party culture,” Singh told the media while responding to the allegations.Vishwanath’s allegations were countered by M P Renukacharya and S R Vishwanath, both political secretaries to the CM, who minced no words.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who cancelled all his official work for the day, met with MLAs and ministers at his official residence in the run-up to their interaction with Arun Singh. More than 15 MLAs, chiefs of boards and corporations including Rajesh Gowda, Jyoti Ganesh, Rajugouda, Renukacharya, etc, were present.

At a private hotel in the city, another set of BJP leaders — most of them with a long list of complaints against Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa — also held meetings.During their individual interactions with Arun Singh at the State BJP headquarters, the party seemed to be clearly divided into three groups — one batting for Yediyurappa’s continuation as chief minister, another lobbying for leadership change and a third that came with a bunch of complaints against the government, but were agreeable to anything that the high command decided.

“There was no discussion on leadership change,” Arun Singh reiterated on Thursday. More than two dozen party MLAs, ministers, party leaders met Arun Singh and all their concerns were noted down. But, going by legislators’ own admission, arguments for and against Yediyurappa were made behind closed doors.“The BJP’s parliamentary committee decides who becomes Chief Minister. It is not a matter to be discussed on the streets lightly,” party national general secretary C T Ravi told the media outside the BJP headquarters.

“Any general secretary’s job is to make note of what leaders have to say and convey it to the central leaders. No decision will be taken at his level. People needed a platform to vent out and the party has given them one. An outburst by leaders like Arvind Bellad was not anticipated,” said a senior party functionary.

Bellad says phone being tapped
Dharwad West BJP MLA Arvind Bellad, has alleged that his phone was being tapped and attempts were being made to fix him in a controversy. “Unknown hands are trying to target me. I have written to Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri that my phone is being tapped, my movements are being tracked and I have requested protection. I have also written to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai,” Bellad told the media. Bellad’s name has been doing the rounds as a replacement to Yediyurappa in case of a change in leadership.

CM Stalin flags vaccine supply to TN, tells PM Modi to grant citizenship for Lankan Tamil refugees

June 18, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday said he has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the state and rescind the Centre’s preliminary nod for Mekedatu dam in Karnataka.

On his maiden visit to the national capital after assuming office as Chief Minister last month, Stalin urged Modi to grant citizenship to Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka, withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act and the three farm laws.

Raising the level of Mullaperiyar dam, priority for river linking initiatives, scrapping NEET, finding a permanent solution to the travails of fishermen at the hands of Sri Lankan Navy, completing work for AIIMS at Madurai in Tamil Nadu were among the other issues he raised.

Stalin, who called on Modi, said he urged the Prime Minister to immediately operationalise the union government’s vaccine manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu.

While one facility is at Chengelpet near Chennai, another is in the Nilgiris district.

“I have given a memorandum to the Prime Minister,” he told reporters after his 30-minute meeting with Modi which he described as satisfactory.

Asked about the release of seven Rajiv Gandhi case convicts, he said the state government’s recommendation on their release was with the Centre now (forwarded by Governor Banwarilal Purohit to President Ram Nath Kovind).

Also, a related matter was in court and the government would formulate its stance in accordance with the legal proceedings, he added.

For long, most TN parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, have favoured the release of Rajiv case convicts as they had spent about three decades in prison and recently Perarivalan, one of the convicts, was granted leave for a month.

Stalin said the union government should release full funding due to Tamil Nadu including those related to Goods and Service Tax and these were among the demands that were made in the memorandum.

All entrance examinations for professional courses like the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for medicine should be scrapped and such aspects also featured in the memorandum, he said, reiterating the state’s demand.

He said the Prime Minister has assured his full cooperation to take forward the development initiatives of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin said he would continue to exert pressure on the Centre to fulfill the demands which also included retrieving Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka, as a lasting solution to the fishermen issue.

“We will extend our hand (of support) for (harmonious) ties with the Centre and at the same time raise our voice for state’s rights,” he replied when asked if he would pursue a line like that of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vis-a-vis ties with Centre or like others who follow a cordial approach.

Son of DMK patriarch and late chief minister M Karunanidhi, Stalin piloted his DMK to a spectacular victory in the April 6 assembly election.

Though he should have met the Prime Minister immediately after becoming chief minister, the pandemic had deferred the meeting.

“Now the Coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India have declined considerably,” he said and indicated the downward graph had paved the way for the crucial meeting today.

“We will implement them all, gradually,” he replied when asked if he would implement his party’s poll assurances, including winding up state-owned TASMAC liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu. On the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, he had sought the Centre’s intervention to ensure the “Eelam Tamils equal civil and political rights.”

The 25-point memorandum, which he presented to Modi, highlighted several demands of the state which also included expediting the AIIMS project at Madurai and establishing a new AIIMS in Coimbatore.

Reservation for OBC should be included in the all India quota for admission to medical colleges at UG and PG level, he said.

On the controversial Mekedatu reservoir project across the Cauvery river, he said he asked the centre to withdraw the permission granted to Karnataka.

Stalin also sought increasing the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to its full reservoir level of 152 feet and sought the expedition of Godavari-Cauvery and Cauvery-Gundaru rivers linkage and release of Cauvery water during this year as per the Supreme Court order.

Special relief package for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, a new international airport with world-class standards at Chennai, declaring Madurai airport as an international airport, modernising airports in Salem and Thoothukudi, and passing the Bill to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures were among the numerous demands.

Japan set to ease COVID-19 emergency ahead of Olympics

June 17, 2021 by Nasheman

TOKYO: Japan is set to announce a decision Thursday to ease a coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and six other areas this weekend, with new daily cases falling just as the country begins making final preparations for the Olympics starting in just over a month.

Japan has been struggling since late March to slow a wave of infections propelled by more contagious variants, with new daily cases soaring above 7,000 at one point and seriously ill patients straining hospitals in Tokyo, Osaka and other metropolitan areas.

Daily cases have since subsided significantly and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected to downgrade the state of emergency when it expires on Sunday to less stringent measures.

Despite concerns by medical experts and the public over the potential risks of holding the Olympics, Suga has said he is determined to hold a “safe and secure” Games starting July 23.

Holding the Olympics before elections in the fall is also a political gamble for Suga, whose support ratings have tumbled over dissatisfaction with his handling of the pandemic, a slow vaccination drive and a lack of explanation how he intents to ensure the virus doesn’t spread during the Olympics.

Experts at a virus panel meeting Thursday gave preliminary approval for government plans to downgrade the emergency in Tokyo, Aichi, Hokkaido, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Fukuoka.

“We must do everything we can, and provide firm financial support as well,” said Dr. Shigeru Omi, head of a government COVID-19 panel.

At a parliamentary Health and Labour Committee last week, Omi cautioned that holding the Olympics in the middle of the pandemic is “abnormal” and warned that it would increase the risk of infections.

The measures will remain in Okinawa, where hospitals are still overwhelmed, while Hiroshima and Okayama will be taken off the list.

Suga is expected to announce a final decision later Thursday.

Japan does not enforce hard lockdowns and the state of emergency allows prefectural leaders to order closures or shorter hours for non-essential businesses.

Those that comply are compensated and violators fined.

Stay-at-home and other measures for the general population are only requests and are increasingly ignored.

Ryuji Wakita, the director-general of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases who heads a government COVID-19 advisory board, said infections have decreased in many areas, but the slowing has bottomed out in the Tokyo region.

He warned that infections could increase and that signs of a rebound are already seen among younger people.

Even as more people are getting the jabs and most of the country’s 36 million senior citizens are expected to be fully inoculated by the end of July, younger people are largely unvaccinated and infections among them could quickly burden hospitals, Wakita said.

“In order to prevent another upsurge, it is crucial to prevent the people from roaming around during the Olympics and summer vacation,” he said.

Experts say it is crucial to accelerate the vaccine rollout for the Olympics to be safe.

Suga has opened up mass inoculation centers and started vaccinations at major companies, part of an ambitious target of as many as 1 million doses per day.

As of Tuesday, only 5.6% of Japanese were fully vaccinated.

In hard-hit Osaka in western Japan, hospital capacity has improved and new infections dropped to 108 on Tuesday, down from more than 1,200 a day in late April.

In Tokyo, new cases are down to around 500 per day from above 1,100 in mid-May.

Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike has said effective virus measures need to be kept in place.

Karnataka HC allows bail pleas of accused of Bangalore Violence

June 17, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Noting that the extension of time for completion of investigation on the application filed by prosecution, without notifying it to the accused, would frustrate their indefeasible right for statutory bail, the Karnataka High Court set aside the order passed by the trial court to extend the period of investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the DJ Halli and KG Halli riots case, terming it the same as being ‘bad in law’.The HC also allowed applications filed by 115 accused seeking ‘default bail’, subject to conditions.

It noted that the application filed by the prosecution seeking more time for investigation was not notified either to the accused or to their advocates, a day after their custody was extended. Even the requirement of law laid down by the Supreme Court in the case of Sanjay Dutt has not been complied with. However, the application filed by the prosecution was allowed on the very same day, while the accused were not made aware that such an application was filed and considered, the court added.

Justice S Vishwanath Shetty passed the order, while allowing a batch of petitions filed by Muzammil Pasha and others. The accused were booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, IPC and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. They were arrested by on August 12, 2020.Apart from challenging the order passed by the trial court on November 3, 2020 on the application filed by the NIA, the accused have also questioned the order dated January 5, 2021, passed by that court rejecting their plea seeking default bail.

Since NIA could not complete the investigation within the stipulated 90 days, it sought an extension by another 90 days, which was granted. With the expiry of the period, the accused had filed the application before the trial court, praying for grant of statutory bail for the default of the prosecution.

Panel to Karnataka Govt: Can reopen malls, restaurants from June 21

June 17, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The State Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19, which seemed cautious earlier, at a recent meeting recommended that the State could reopen some economic activities like malls, dine-in restaurants, marriage halls, shopping complexes, shopping lanes and closed markets in unlock phase-2, starting from June 21, sources said. But the number of people at these places will be limited, the sources added.

But Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, said, “If we do not follow Covid-appropriate behaviour we will be back to square one. Opening of closed markets, malls and shopping complexes should still be thought about. It can be allowed only if cases continue to drop in Bengaluru.”

Meanwhile, the Technical Advisory Commitee (TAC) on Covid-19 pandemic has recommended that night curfew should be continued till June-end and public rallies, dharnas, fairs and festivals should be banned for the rest of the year. While the second phase of unlocking will start from June 21, the third phase is expected to begin from July 5. Also, the number of people allowed in some of the restricted places will be relaxed depending on the situation.

Gyms and yoga centres, places of worship, cinema halls, sports clubs, clubhouses and public washrooms will have to wait till Unlock Phase-3.The committee has also recommended that the lifting of night curfew and opening of schools and colleges should be decided separately.

Chirag Paswan attacks JD(U) for split in his party, spares BJP as he vows to fight back

June 17, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan on Wednesday blamed Janata Dal (United) for engineering the split in his party and rejected the decisions taken by the faction headed by his uncle Pashupati Paras, saying the party’s constitution does not authorise them any such power.

In his first interaction with media after the split in the party, he struck a combative note by describing himself as “sher ka beta” (lion’s son) and asserted that he will fight for the cause of the party founded by his father Ram Vilas Paswan.

Paswan accused the JD(U) for working to split his party even when his father was hospitalised last year, and alleged that a conspiracy was hatched recently behind his back as he lay ill.

He, however, steered clear of questions regarding the role of the BJP in the development and added that what has happened is also an internal matter of his party for which he will not target others.

He replied wryly when asked if “Hanuman” who is in trouble now will seek help from “Ram”, a reference to his projection of his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Bihar assembly polls as that between the two famous characters of epic Ramayan.

“If Hanuman has to seek help from Ram, then what good is Hanuman and what good is Ram,” he said in Hindi.

It is going to be a long battle, Paswan said, as the group headed by him fights the faction of five other party MPs, led by Paras, to claim ownership of the LJP.

The JD(U), he alleged, had been working to cause a split in the party even when his father was alive.

Targeting the party, he said it has always worked to divide Dalits and weaken its leaders.

The LJP draws its support from Paswans, the largest Dalit caste in Bihar.

“A conspiracy was hatched behind my back while I was ill,” Paswan said.

He had recently suffered from typhoid.

The 38-year-old MP from Jamui expressed determination to take on the rival group while also taking swipe at his paternal uncle without using any strong words to attack him.

“I did not feel orphaned when my father died last year.

I do feel now,” he said, adding that he had expected his uncle to play the role of the family’s patriarch but was instead abandoned by him.

Paswan recalled his decision to walk out of the ruling NDA in Bihar to take on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and said many wanted him to opt for a life of comfort and not struggle by allying with him.

“For that I would have to bow before Nitish Kumar.

I could not do that.

My uncle played no role in the election campaign,” he said and rejected accusations from the rival group that he took unilateral decisions during the polls.

They never made any such claim then, Paswan said and rejected their decision to remove him as the LJP president, saying its constitution says that a new party chief can be appointed only in the case of the incumbent’s death or resignation.

“All decisions they have taken are in contravention of the party’s constitution,” he said, accompanied by a number of senior party leaders.

Though the LJP played the role of spoiler for the JD(U) in the assembly polls in over 35 seats, it itself won only one seat and the lone MLA later defected to Kumar’s party.

Paswas, however, asserted that the polls were a “big win” for his party as it got nearly six per cent votes.

Paswan has also contested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision to name Paras as the leader of the party in the House, saying it is “contrary” to the constitutional provisions of his organisation.

In a letter written on Tuesday, Paswan also informed Birla of the party’s decision to expel five MPs, who have joined hands against him, and urged the Speaker to review the earlier decision and issue a new circular naming him as the LJP leader in the Lok Sabha.

“Since Article 26 of the Constitution of Lok Jan Shakti Party empower Central Parliamentary Board of the party to decide who would be Leader of our Party in Lok Sabha, hence, the decision of announcing Sh.

Pashupati Kumar Paras MP as Leader of LJP party in the Lok Sabha is contrary to provision of Constitution of our party,” he wrote.

Paras has been elected as their leader by the five of party’s six MPs in place of Paswan.

Both factions have now moved to control the party and project their group as the real LJP, founded by Paswan’s father Ram Vilas Paswan.

While the wing led by Chirag Paswan has expelled the five MPs from the party, the rival group has removed him as its president.

Asked about a woman’s allegation of sexual exploitation against his cousin Prince Raj, one of the rebel MPs, that he had mentioned in the letter which was released by him on Tuesday, Paswan said he had advised both of them to approach police.

Paswan’s letter addressed to Paras was written in March and was released on Tuesday.

Some workers of the LJP youth wing, Delhi also protested outside Paras’ residence with its chief Bikas Singh accusing him of “backstabbing” Chirag Paswan.

Innovate and invest in India PM Modi tells summit on technology and start-ups

June 17, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the coronavirus pandemic has put to test conventional methods and that innovation is the only way out, while inviting the world to invest in India. “I believe where convention fails, innovation can help. This has been seen during the Covid-19 global pandemic, which is the biggest disruption of our age.

Modi said India is home to one of the world’s largest start-up ecosystems. “Several unicorns have come up in recent years. India offers what innovators and investors need.” VivaTech Summit is one of the largest digital and start-up events in Europe, held annually in Paris since 2016. It is organised by Publicis Groupe, an advertising and marketing conglomerate, and Les Echos, a media group. It brings together stakeholders in technology innovation and start-up ecosystem. It features  exhibitions, panel discussions and contests.

The Prime Minister observed that over the past one year, the country has experienced disruptions in various sectors. “Much of it is still there. Yet, disruption does not have to mean despair. We must keep the focus on the twin foundations of repair and prepare.”

Saying that India has implemented reforms across various sectors, Modi said the nation has been adaptable and agile during the pandemic. “Digital technology helped us cope, connect, comfort and console. Through digital media we could work, talk with our loved ones and help others,” he added. India and France have been working closely on a wide range of subjects. Among these, technology and digital are emerging areas of cooperation.
