Boat carrying 81 Rohingya found stranded on Indonesia island

June 5, 2021 by Nasheman

INDONESIA: Villagers in Indonesia’s Aceh province on Friday discovered a stranded boat carrying 81 Rohingya Muslims, including children, who had left a refugee camp in Bangladesh, officials said.

More than 700,000 Rohingya have fled from Buddhist-majority Myanmar to camps in Bangladesh since August 2017, when the military launched a clearance operation in response to attacks by a rebel group.

Myanmar security forces have been accused of mass rapes, killings and the burning of thousands of homes.

Groups of Rohingya have attempted to leave the crowded refugee camps in Bangladesh and travel by sea in hazardous voyages to other Muslim-majority countries in the region.

M.Ilyas, a Rohingya on the stranded boat, said they had headed initially to Malaysia but were refused entry because of concerns over the coronavirus.

He said their boat’s engine broke down in Indian waters, and local fishermen there helped them continue their trip.

The engine broke down again, and the boat, carrying 49 women, 21 men and 11 children, ran aground on Idaman island in Aceh, Indonesia’s northernmost province, he said.

Local villagers reported the stranded boat to authorities, Adek said. Salmidin, a police officer, said local authorities, including the coronavirus task force, are working together to process the Rohingya.

“It is an empty island and we do not know their condition, whether they are free from COVID-19 or not. We are trying to examine them now,” Salmidin said.

Myanmar has denied citizenship to most Rohingya Muslims since 1982, effectively rendering them stateless. They are also denied freedom of movement and other rights including education.

Authorities in Myanmar say the Rohingya migrated illegally from Bangladesh, even though many of their families have lived in Myanmar for decades.

In September, almost 300 Rohingya were found on Ujung Blang beach in Aceh province after months at sea.

Nigeria ‘indefinitely’ suspends Twitter after it deletes President Buhari’s tweet

June 5, 2021 by Nasheman

ABUJA: Nigeria’s government said on Friday it was suspending Twitter’s operations indefinitely, two days after the social media giant deleted a tweet from President Muhammadu Buhari’s account for violating its rules.

Twitter was still working in Africa’s most populous country soon after Friday’s statement, which triggered immediate criticism from rights groups and analysts about freedom of expression.

Nigeria’s information ministry said Twitter was “suspended, indefinitely,” because of “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

When asked about the decision, ministry special assistant Segun Adeyemi told AFP: “I can’t answer technicalities… operations will be suspended indefinitely.”

The ministry also announced the suspension on its own Twitter account though it gave no details on when the decision would take effect or what form the suspension would take.

“The announcement made by the Nigerian Government that they have suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria is deeply concerning,” the company said in a statement.

“We’re investigating and will provide updates when we know more.”

The ministry did not give details about what activities were threatening Nigeria.

But Twitter on Wednesday deleted a remark on Buhari’s account for violating regulations, after he referred to the country’s civil war in a warning about recent unrest in the southeast.

The 78-year-old president, a former general, referred to those “misbehaving” in recent violence in the southeast, where officials blame separatists for attacks on police and election offices.

Minister of Information Lai Mohammed on Wednesday accused Twitter of ignoring violent messages from a separatist leader and also referred to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s support for the #EndSARS protests last year in Nigeria against police brutality.

Friday’s decision was swiftly denounced by rights groups.

“This repressive action is a clear attempt to censor dissent & stifle the civic space,” Human Rights Warch researcher Anietie Ewang said on Twitter.

‘Muzzling freedom of expression’

Amnesty International called for Nigeria to immediately reverse the “unlawful suspension”.

“This is the height of muzzling the freedom of expression that can only happen in dictatorships,” Bulama Bukarti, an analyst at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, said on Twitter.

“It will go down in history as one Buhari’s biggest mistakes and PR disasters.”

Nigeria in 2019 had announced it would tighten regulations on social media to fight fake news and disinformation, but the proposal sparked concerns over freedom of expression.

Several countries including China and Turkey have come under fire for putting restrictions on social media platforms like Twitter.

In February Twitter condemned Myanmar’s move to block access to its platform as part of a crackdown on social media, days after a coup that saw Aung San Suu Kyi and other civilian leaders jailed.

June 5, 2021 by Nasheman

Political cartoonist Manjul received an e-mail from Twitter saying the Centre had told the micro-blogging site that the content on his Twitter page violated the laws of the country.

“We understand that receiving this type of notice can be an unsettling experience. While Twitter is not able to provide legal advice, we want you to have an opportunity to evaluate the request and, if you wish, take appropriate action to protect your interests. This may include seeking legal counsel and challenging the request in court…,” Twitter wrote in the e-mail.

HC clears decks for recruitment of 1.25 lakh teachers in Bihar 4 per cent quota for persons with disability

June 5, 2021 by Nasheman

PATNA: After waiting for almost two years, the Bihar government will start receiving application for recruitment of nearly 1.25 lakh teachers in government-run schools.

The National Federation of the Blind-Bihar had filed a petition challenging the recruitment process of teachers alleging that no reservation was granted for the differently-abled aspirants.

As a result, the recruitment was stalled for two years. The matter was taken up in the Patna High Court.

Finally, the court directed the state government to ensure four per cent reservation for the differently-abled and visually impaired candidates and grant them 15 days to apply.

On Friday, education minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said that the process has been started to publish the merit list, keeping the high court’s decsion to grant 4 per cent reservation to the differently-abled and visually impaired in mind.

“We have moved the recruitment process of physically challenged aspirants who were left last time from applying for the jobs. We will tentatively start receiving the applications from June 9 by offline and online modes. A time of 15 days has been granted following the court’s direction. We will continue receiving applications,” claimed Chaudhary.

Now, the differently-abled and visually impaired candidates, who could not apply in 2019, will be able to apply for recruitment from June 9.

Meanwhile, the education minister told the media that a new advertisement of Covid-19 vaccines for physically challenged candidates will be published both offline and online after June 8.

He also hoped that if no unforeseen crisis hit the state, the entire recruitment for 1.25 lakh teachers in the government-run primary to high schools will be completed in next 2 to 3 months.

Around 90,000 teachers for primary and 30,000 for middle schools would be among the 1.25 lakh recruitments.

Uttarakhand tourism industry seeks relief package to tide over COVID-19 crisis

June 4, 2021 by Nasheman

DEHRADUN: The coronavirus battered tourism industry of Uttarakhand is pinning its hope on a relief package for hoteliers, owners of roadside eateries, tour and travel operators and people connected with adventure tourism who are facing a livelihood crisis.

“Tourism is our bread and butter and it has suffered at multiple levels due to the pandemic. A relief package at this stage will do a world of good to people in the sector,” Maharaj told PTI in an interview. Citing the findings of a study conducted by IIM, Kashipur, the minister said Covid caused losses worth Rs 1600 crore to the tourism industry of Uttarakhand in 2020 besides rendering around 23000 people jobless.

He said that the losses caused by the second wave of corona this year have not been estimated yet.

The relief package has been sought for hoteliers, owners of roadside eateries, tour and travel operators and people connected with adventure tourism like rafting and trekking who are facing a livelihood crisis with no tourists arriving due to the pandemic.

“While Kumbh had to be scaled down for people’s safety due to a raging second wave, the Chardham yatra has been hit hard by the COVID induced restrictions for the second consecutive year. It has been a big blow to the tourism industry,” the minister said.

Hotels in tourist hubs like Nainital and Mussoorie have suffered bulk cancellation of bookings in recent months due to the second wave of the pandemic which had shown signs of abating in February-March. Tour and travel operators have also suffered with no tourists around.

Covid curfew has been in force in Uttarakhand for several weeks now and vehicle operators are almost off the roads, he said.

“A relief package for the tourism industry at this hour will give it the much needed shot in the arm,” Maharaj said adding that the chief minister has also been asked to include folk artistes as beneficiaries of the relief package as they do not get a chance to perform and earn with no cultural programmes being held by the tourism and culture department for more than a year.

Maharaj said he has also requested the chief minister to go for a phased opening of the Chardham Yatra after the Covid curfew is lifted in the state. Although the famous Himalayan temples of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are open for daily prayers, they have been kept out of bounds for pilgrims in view of COVID.

Pilgrimage to the Himalayan temples faced similar hurdles last year and opened finally with mandatory restrictions like a negative RT-PCR test report which limited the footfall of devotees to around 3.5 lakh only during the entire yatra season.

However, the minister said the tourism scenario though bleak should not lead to despair. “COVID is a global crisis. Many tourist hubs in the world have battled it and overcome the challenges. We should draw inspiration from them and look forward with hope,” he said citing the instance of Dubai where the tourism industry is already showing signs of recovery.

Punjab: Three rebel AAP MLAs join Congress amid party’s internal turmoil

June 4, 2021 by Nasheman

CHANDIGARH:  Even as Punjab unit of the Congress is in the thick of an internal turmoil, three rebel AAP MLAs Sukhpal Khaira (Bholath), Pirmal Singh (Bhadaur) and Jagdev Singh Kamalu (Maur) joined the party on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

The inductions are seen as a shot in the arm for the beleaguered CM just before he flew to Delhi to meet the three-member AICC panel set up by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to resolve the infighting in the party. He is expected to meet the panel led by Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday.

Amarinder said the joining of the three legislators had the approval of the Congress president. After the induction ceremony, Patiala MP and Amarinder’s wife Preneet Kaur said, “These legislators who have joined will be a big asset to the party.”

Congress sources said that by choosing to induct the rebel AAP legislators at this juncture, Amarinder had tried to convey a message to the party brass that leaders from other parties were willing to join even as “our own leaders” were claiming that his Congress government was losing the game of perception.

It’s a homecoming for Khaira who had quit the Congress in 2015 to join the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP. He said he and his colleagues had decided to return to the Congress in the larger interest of the country as well as Punjab.

It was a political blunder to join the AAP presuming that Arvind Kejriwal would bring about a qualitative change in the political culture of India, he said.

Four Trinamool Congress leaders appear before CBI court in Narada sting case

June 4, 2021 by Nasheman

KOLKATA: Four senior leaders, facing trial in the Narada case, appeared before the special CBI judge at a court in Kolkata on Friday. Judge Anupam Mukerjee had on April 17, while ordering interim bail to the four leaders, directed them to physically appear before the court on June 4.

State ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, TMC MLA Madan Mitra and former city mayor Sovan Chatterjee appeared before the judge and left the Bankshall court premises after a while. Judge Mukherjee said that the next date for the hearing of the matter will be fixed later in the day.

A five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court granted interim bail on May 28 to the four leaders, who were arrested on May 17 by the CBI, which is investigating the Narada sting tape case on an order of the high court.

The special CBI court had granted them bail on that day itself, but the order was stayed by the high court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Production of the four before the special CBI court was held virtually on May 17 as the investigating agency claimed it was unable to produce the accused in court physically owing to protests outside its office at Nizam Palace by a mob of 2,000-3,000 people.

Chargesheet in the Narada sting case was also submitted against the accused before the special court on that day. The special court, granting interim bail, had fixed the next date of hearing on June 4, when the accused were to appear before it.

They were placed under house arrest on May 21 by a division bench of the high court, which modified its earlier stay on interim bail granted to the four leaders by the special CBI court. The matter was referred to a larger bench of five judges after the judges of a division bench presided by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal differed on granting interim bail to the four accused.

PM Narendra Modi lauds Indian scientists for developing vaccine against COVID-19

June 4, 2021 by Nasheman

On the occasion, Modi reiterated his call for an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and strong India, saying the COVID-19 crisis may have slowed its pace but our resolve remains the same.k

PM Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lauded Indian scientists developing made-in-India vaccine against COVID and boosting other measures to fight the pandemic within a year of its outbreak.

They are working at the same quick pace, he said. Noting that the world is grappling with the biggest challenge in a century, the prime minister praised the scientific community, saying it is perhaps unprecedented that vaccines were prepared within a year.

On the occasion, Modi reiterated his call for an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-reliant) and strong India, saying the COVID-19 crisis may have slowed its pace but our resolve remains the same.

India wants to be self-reliant in a number of sectors, ranging from agriculture to astronomy, disaster management to defence technology, vaccine to virtual reality, and biotechnology to battery technology, he asserted.

He said that India is now showing the way to the world in sustainable development and clean energy, and is playing an important role in progress in other countries with its role in software and satellite development.
