Roger Federer pulls out of Tokyo Olympics due to knee injury

Lausanne (Switzerland), Jul 13: Tennis icon Roger Federer on Tuesday announced that he is pulling out of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics owing to a knee injury.

The Olympics, in which on-site spectators will not be allowed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, are scheduled to be held in the Japanese capital from July 23 to August 8.

In a statement, he said that he had “suffered a setback” with his knee.

Federer announced the news on Twitter saying that he is “greatly disappointed” on missing out on an opportunity to represent Switzerland in the world’s biggest sporting spectacle.

“During the grass court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games,” Federer said in the statement.

“I am greatly disappointed, as it has been an honour and highlight of my career each time I have represented Switzerland,” he added.

Federer won the silver medal in men’s singles at the 2012 London Olympics and gold old in men’s doubles at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The 39-year-old Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, a record he shares with his great rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, has begun rehabilitation and hopes to return to action later this summer.

“I have already begun rehabilitation in the hopes of returning to the tour later this summer. I wish the entire Swiss team the best of luck and I will be rooting hard from afar. As always, Hopp Schwiz!” he added.

Last week, Federer was knocked out of Wimbledon by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.

Hurkacz beat the legend in straight sets to reach the semi-final. In the first round of the tournament, Federer survived a scare before France’s Adrian Mannarino retired due to injury.

In 2020, Federer had two knee surgeries. He even had to withdraw from French Open despite winning three matches to save himself for Wimbledon.

Federer has been dealing with knee issues for a while now. He had pulled out of French Open this year to help improve his condition before the Wimbledon.

Adani group takes over management control of Mumbai airport

July 15, 2021 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Adani Group on Tuesday said it has taken over the management of Mumbai International airport from the GVK group.

The Group last August had announced that it would acquire GVK Group’s stake in Mumbai airport.

Adani Group will have 74 per cent stake in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, post the stake purchase transaction, with 50.5 per cent being bought from GVK Group and 23.5 per cent from minority partners including Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), and Bidvest Group, it had said.

“We are delighted to take over management of the world class Mumbai International Airport. We promise to make Mumbai proud. The Adani Group will build an airport ecosystem of the future for business, leisure and entertainment. We will create thousands of new local jobs, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said in a tweet.

Later in a statement, Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, said it has taken over the management control of Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) from the GVK Group following the MIAL Board Meeting earlier in the day.

This follows approvals received from the Central Government, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra, and the Government of Maharashtra, it added.

Our larger objective is to reinvent airports as ecosystems that drive local economic development and act as the nuclei around which we can catalyse aviation-linked businesses. These include metropolitan developments that span entertainment facilities, e-commerce and logistics capabilities, aviation dependent industries, smart city developments, and other innovative business concepts, Adani said in the statement.

“Our airport expansion strategy is intended to help converge our nation’s Tier 1 cities with the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in a hub and spoke model. This is fundamental to enabling a greater equalization of India’s urban rural divide, as well as making international travel seamless and smooth, he said.

“I believe that the economic value that cities create will be maximized around airports and the cities of tomorrow will be built with the airport as the focal point. This is a fundamental lever for modern world development and the rapid build-out of our airport infrastructure will create multiple employment structures that generate thousands of new job opportunities, he added.

Mumbai International Airport is the country’s second busiest airport (after Delhi’s IGIA) by both passenger and cargo traffic.

With eight airports (in its management and development portfolio), Adani Airport Holdings is now India’s largest airport infrastructure company, accounting for 25 per cent airport footfalls, the company said in the statement.

With the addition of MIAL, AAHL will now also control 33 per cent of India’s air cargo traffic, it added.

According to the company while the world navigates its way out of an unprecedented crisis, post-pandemic demand for air travel in India and the rest of the world is expected to surge.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects global passenger traffic to recover to 88 per cent of pre-COVID levels by 2022 and exceed pre-COVID levels in 2023, it said.

With India becoming to be the world’s third largest aviation market by 2024, the addition of the Mumbai International Airport to the Adani Group’s existing portfolio of six airports, and thereafter the operationalization of the greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) provides a transformational aviation platform allowing the Adani Group to interlink its B2B and B2C business as well as create several strategic adjacencies for the Group’s other B2B businesses, it stated.

AAHL also said it will begin the construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport next month and complete the financial closure in the next 90 days. This new international airport will be commissioned in 2024.

IT dept detects Rs 880-cr hidden income after survey of Bengaluru company

July 15, 2021 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has detected “concealment” of Rs 880 crore income after it surveyed the Bengaluru premises of a leading manpower service providing company, the CBDT said on Tuesday.

The identity of the company was not available immediately.

The survey was carried out on July 8 at two premises of the company.

“The assessee has been claiming huge deduction under section 80JJAA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 which incentivises new employment generation, subject to fulfilment of certain conditions such as emoluments paid to the employee which should be less than Rs 25,000 per month and number of days of employment etc.”

“Overall, the survey has resulted in detection of concealment of income to the tune of Rs 880 crore spread over various assessment years,” the CBDT said in a statement issued here.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) frames policy for the tax department.

It said the survey operation, a surprise action where the taxman visits only the business premises of an assessee, found that “even though the emoluments of new employees added were more than Rs 25,000 per month, the assessee has been wrongfully claiming deduction under section 80JJAA by excluding certain components of emoluments of such employees to fit into the eligible emoluments limit”.

The CBDT claimed it was found that “deduction under section 80JJAA has been claimed in subsequent years, even though certain eligible employees were no longer on the payroll of the assessee.”

Siddaramaiah attacks BS Yediyurappa over bank exam language row, calls Karnataka CM a “mouse”

Siddaramaiah attacks BS Yediyurappa over bank exam language row, calls Karnataka CM a "mouse"

Bengaluru: Accusing the Centre of betraying Kannadigas by not allowing candidates to take the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection exams in Kannada, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Tuesday called Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa a “mouse” for not standing up to the Centre on it.

In a series of tweets with “#IBPSMosa” (#IBPSCheating) he hit out at the ruling BJP at the centre and the state on the issue and demanded the resignations of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a Rajya Sabha member from the state, and also Yediyurappa if they cannot ensure justice to Kannadigas.

“Narendra Modi is betraying Kannadigas by not allowing candidates to take IBPS exams in Kannada.

Latest notification by IBPS is an example for BJP’s anti-Kannada stand.

Central govt should immediately address this and ensure justice to Kannadigas,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Noting that Karnataka has elected 25 MPs to the Lok Sabha, he asked “What are these MPs doing? Though slavery is abolished, BJP Karnataka MPs are behaving like slaves of Narendra Modi. Shame on them!!”

“Yediyurappa’s followers call him Huli (Tiger) but in reality he is ili (Mouse).

He hides in burrows when he has to stand up in front of Narendra Modi. Let him resign if he cannot ensure justice to Kannadigas,” he added.

Pointing out that IBPS had called for applications to fill more than 3,000 vacant clerical positions in 11 nationalised banks, of which 407 posts are in Karnataka, the former Chief Minister said injustice to Kannada will result in huge unemployment by leaving out Kannadigas in the competition.

“Candidates were able to write IBPS exams in regional languages before 2014. After BJP came to power, rules were changed to allow English and Hindi only.

We had even written a letter to Narendra Modi to protest against this,” he said.

Further, noting that most of the schemes of the Central and State governments are implemented through banks, on which farmers, labourers, women and many others are dependent, he said rural people are facing harassment from staff who don’t know Kannada.

“Being elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, Nirmala Sitharaman has constantly betrayed Kannadigas and Kannada.

She has continued the same with respect to IBPS exams.

She is unfit to represent people of Karnataka in Rajya Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi meets Prashant Kishor ahead of likely rejig in Punjab

Rahul Gandhi meets Prashant Kishor ahead of likely rejig in Punjab

New Delhi: Ahead of a likely organisational and government reshuffle in Punjab, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met poll strategist Prashant Kishor at his residence.

Other party leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AICC general secretary Punjab-in-charge Harish Rawat and KC Venugopal were also present during the meeting where they are learnt to have discussed the party’s overhaul in Punjab and efforts to end factionalism in the state unit ahead of assembly elections.

Kishor had earlier met Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on the impending changes in the Punjab Congress.

Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu, who have been at loggerheads, have made a number of public statements against each other in recent months. Amid the tiff, the Gandhis have met the Punjab chief minister and Sidhu separately.

There was no official word on what was discussed at the meeting with Kishor which lasted about an hour, but sources said the new Punjab Congress body would be announced in the next few days and the discussions were focused on it.

There have been hectic deliberations over the past few days over the likely changes in the Punjab government and the party’s state unit.

Both Sidhu and Amarinder Singh have also met the three-member AICC panel headed by Mallikarjun Kharge. The panel had earlier submitted its report to the Congress chief with its recommendations.

The CM had then said any decision taken by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi would be acceptable to him and the party.

The role for Sidhu in the organisation has remained a sticking point from the beginning as he is keen on the post of PCC chief, which is not acceptable to the chief minister, according to party sources.
