Paddler Bhavinaben Patel wins historic silver at Tokyo Paralympics

August 30, 2021 by Nasheman

Tokyo: Bhavinaben Patel on Sunday became only the second Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympics after she signed off with a historic silver following a 0-3 loss to world number one Chinese paddler Ying Zhou in the women’s singles table tennis class 4 final here.

The 34-year-old Patel’s impressive run at the Games ended with a fighting 7-11 5-11 6-11 loss to Zhou, a two-time gold medallist, in the women’s singles summit clash which lasted 19 minutes.

With this medal, Indian team opened its account at the Games.

Deepa Malik, who is the current president of Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), was the first Indian woman to win a medal in the Paralympic Games when she had claimed a silver in shotput at Rio five years back.

Patel, a wheelchair player, had also suffered a loss to Zhou, one of the most decorated para-paddlers of China, in her first group stage match earlier in the week.

Up against an opponent, who has five Paralympic medals to her name including gold medals in singles at Beijing and London, Patel seemed to struggle as she couldn’t execute her strategy and was left to do the catch up job.

Zhou, a six-time World Championship medallist, didn’t allow Patel, currently ranked 12th in her division, to find her angled returns and get into a rally.

In the first game, Zhou broke off from 3-3 to move ahead. Patel tried to keep herself within touching distance with a superb serve at 5-7 and a forehand flick but the Chinese managed to earn the bragging right with a deep push at the baseline.

The second game was a one-way traffic as Zhou jumped to a 7-1 lead early on. Patel narrowed it down to 4-7 but the Chinese soon grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Pushed to the brink, Patel tried to script a recovery as she moved neck and neck with her opponent till 5-5 in the third game. But Zhou once again moved ahead and sealed the contest with a backhand shot.

Patel, who was diagnosed with polio when she was 12 months old, had defeated world no 3 Miao Zhang of China 7-11 11-7 11-4 9-11 11-8 in the semifinal on Saturday.

In the quarterfinal on Friday, Patel had defeated 2016 Rio Paralympics gold medallist and world number two Borislava Peric Rankovic of Serbia to assure herself a medal and script history.

In para table tennis, classes 1-5 are for wheelchair athletes. Athletes in Class 4 category have fair sitting balance and fully functional arms and hands. Their impairment may be due to a lower spinal-cord lesion or cerebral palsy.

Patel started playing the sport 13 years ago at the Blind People’s Association at Vastrapur area of Ahmedabad where she was a student of ITI for people with disabilities.

There, she saw visually impaired children playing table tennis and decided to take up the sport. She won her first medal in a competition while representing Rotary Club in Ahmedabad, where she is settled now after her marriage to Nikunj Patel, who has played junior cricket for Gujarat.

She reached world number two ranking in 2011 after winning a silver medal for India in PTT Thailand Table Tennis Championship. In October 2013, Patel won another silver in the women’s singles Class 4 at the Asian Para table tennis championships in Beijing.

UP govt preparing to rename Sultanpur as Kush Bhavanpur, claims municipal council chairperson

August 30, 2021 by Nasheman

Sultanpur (UP): Sultanpur Municipal Council chairperson Babita Jaiswal on Friday claimed that the Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to rename the district as Kush Bhavanpur after Lord Ram’s son Kush.

“A proposal to this effect was passed in a meeting of the council on January 6, 2018 and was sent to the government,” Jaiswal said.

A memorandum to change the name of the district was handed over to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during his visit here about three months ago and he had assured that it would be done soon, she claimed.

Vijay Singh Raghuvanshi, media incharge of BJP MP from Sultanpur Maneka Gandhi said the locals had given a letter to her seeking the renaming of Sultanpur as Kush Bhavanpur. She met the CM regarding the demand.

The Revenue Board has also given a go-ahead for the same, he claimed.

It is believed that Sultanpur, which is adjacent to Ayodhya, was the capital of Dakshin Kosala during the Ramayana period. Lord Ram divided his kingdom among his brothers and sons before taking ‘jal samadhi’. He gave Dakshin Kosala to his eldest son Kush, who established a new capital city on the banks of Gomti that came to be known as Kush Bhavanpur.

The gazetteer and religious texts also have a reference to this, Raghuvanshi said, adding that when Muslim invaders came to India, Alauddin Khilji destroyed the city of Kush Bhavanpur and named it Sultanpur.

3 more Indians in final of Asian youth boxing; country set for big medal haul

New Delhi, (PTI): World youth bronze-medallist Bishwamitra Chongtham (51kg) was among three Indian male boxers who advanced to the finals of the Asian Youth Championships in Dubai.

Chongtham defeated Tajikistan’s Akarali Abdurakhivonzoda 5-0 on Friday night to make the summit clash.

Joining him in the finals were Suresh Vishwanath (48kg) and Jaydeep Rawat (57kg).

While, Vishwanath defeated Bahrain’s Fadel Sayed 5-0, Rawat edged past Kyrgyzstan’s Bekbol Murasbekov 3-2.

However, Lashu Yadav (70kg) in the women’s draw and Deepak (75kg) signed off with bronze medals after semifinal losses.

Yadav was beaten 0-5 by Kazakhstan’s Gaukhar Shaibekova 0-5. Deepak, on the other hand, lost to Kazakhstan’s Aliaskarov Bakbergen 1-4.

India’s medal count has swelled past 35 in the event being conducted simultaneously for junior and youth boxers (both men and women). While 20 medals are secure for India in the youth competition, the junior event will yield 19 podium finishes.

The draws at the event are considerably small following last-minute withdrawals due to the COVID-19 related travel restrictions. More than 20 Indians were assured of medals on the day of draws itself because of the small size of the competition.

The gold medallists in the youth category will be awarded a prize money of USD 6,000, while silver and bronze medallists will claim USD 3,000 and USD 1,500 respectively.

The junior champions will walk away with USD 4,000 for gold and USD 2,000 and 1,000 for silver and bronze medallists respectively.

US airstrike targets ISIS-K ‘planner’ in Afghanistan

August 30, 2021 by Nasheman

Washington: The US has conducted a drone strike against an Islamic State “planner” in Afghanistan, striking back at the terror outfit in less than 48 hours after a suicide bombing claimed by the group killed 169 Afghans and 13 American soldiers at the Kabul airport.

“US military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner. The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahar province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target, Capt Bill Urban, spokesperson of US Central Command, said on Friday.

We know of no civilian casualties,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the White House said President Joe Biden does not want the terrorists, who planned the attack at the Kabul airport, to live any longer.

I think he made it clear yesterday that he does not want them to live on the Earth anymore, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference.

However, it wasn’t immediately known if the ISIS-K planner was involved specifically in Thursday’s Kabul airport attack, claimed by the Islamic State’s Afghanistan affiliate — Islamic State Khorasan or ISIS-K.

The US airstrike came a day after President Biden vowed to “hunt” down the terrorists and make them “pay” for the Kabul airport attack and ordered his commanders to develop plans to strike back at them.

“To those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm notice, we will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay. I will defend our interests and our people with every measure at my command,” Biden had said in his remarks at the White House on Thursday.

Newcomers in BJP spoiled party’s relationship with Shiv Sena, says Sanjay Raut in attack on Rane

August 30, 2021 by Nasheman

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena and BJP are linked by the “bond of Hindutva” but newcomers like Narayan Rane spoiled the relations between the two parties, Sena leader Sanjay Raut said here on Friday.

Veteran BJP leaders such as Devendra Fadnavis or Chandrakant Patil never used violent language about the Sena, and the two parties were together for 25 years before falling out in 2019, he added, while hitting out at Union minister Rane who joined the BJP in 2019.

Earlier this week, Rane, a former Sena leader himself, sparked off a row with his remark about slapping Maharashtra Chief Minister and Sena president Uddhav Thackeray for what he claimed as the latter’s ignorance of the year of India’s independence.

His remarks led to protests across the state and Rane was arrested on Tuesday before getting bail a few hours later.

“BJP and Shiv Sena had difference of opinion over some issues, but our relationship never turned bitter. The leaders who joined the BJP in the last few years have spoiled the relationship. Their notoriety is similar to that of Bangladeshi and Pakistani infiltrators who disturb our social harmony,” Raut told reporters here.

“We (Sena and BJP) never attacked each other or had such a bitter relationship. The way Narayan Rane is acting, he is displaying animosity. What kind of person the BJP has appointed to improve our relationship,” he added.

The Shiv Sena was with the BJP for 25 years and the relations between Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray and Atal Bihari Vajpayee as well as L K Advani were cordial, Raut said.

“The relationship between Prime minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Thackeray is also cordial,” the Rajya Sabha member added.

The Sena is connected with the BJP by the “bond of Hindutva”, and the leaders who have been with the saffron party for a long time never talk about attacking the Sena Bhavan (Shiv Sena headquarters) or slapping Uddhav Thackeray, Raut said.

Be it Devendra Fadnavis, Chandrakant Patil, Ashish Shelar or Vinod Tawde — these BJP leaders will never use such language against Shiv Sena. The violent language is commonly used by leaders like Prasad Lad, Pravin Darekar and now Narayan Rane, he said.

Those who joined it recently want the BJP and Sena to continue to fight. These people are the real threat to veteran BJP leaders, Raut added.

Asked about BJP Yuva Morcha deciding to write 75,000 letters to chief minister Thackeray over his alleged ignorance of the year of independence, Raut said, Be is letter politics or gutter politics, you can not fight with us.”

Notably, state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil had struck a conciliatory note about the Sena earlier this week when he said the two parties had fallen out and contested 2014 assembly elections separately but they did come together again.

Rane was expelled from the Shiv Sena in July 2005.

“We did five lakh inoculations on a trial basis on Wednesday. Now we will start five lakh vaccinations daily from September 1,” Bommai who returned here on Thursday evening after a visit to Delhi, told reporters.
