Live-in relationship between man, married woman ‘illicit’, says Rajasthan HC

August 18, 2021 by Nasheman

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan High Court has recently issued an order terming the live-in relationship between a man and a married woman “illicit”.

The plea was filed by a 30-year-old married woman and a 27-year-old man from the Jhunjhunu district. During the hearing, the counsel for the petitioners submitted that both the petitioners are adults and are consensually in a live-in relationship.

The petition said the woman is married but has been living separately because of physical abuse by her husband.

“It is clear from examining all the documents of both sides that petitioner number 1 is already married. She has not got a divorce but despite that, she is staying with petitioner number 2 in a live-in relationship. In such a scenario, the live-in relationship between the two comes under the category of an illicit relationship,” says the order by the court.

While passing the order, Justice Sharma also cited a recent order of the Allahabad High Court, wherein it had rejected the request for police protection in a similar case.

Taliban asks India to finish infrastructure projects

August 18, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen has said they will not allow Afghanistan’s soil to be used against any other country and called on India to complete the infrastructure projects if New Delhi wished. “We will not allow any country or any group to use the soil of Afghanistan against anyone. This is clear. India has made projects, many reconstruction and infrastructure projects, and if they want, they can complete the incomplete projects because they are for the people,” Shaheen told a Pakistani news channel in Urdu. His remarks are the first after the Taliban seized power in Kabul on Monday.

However, last week, the external affairs ministry clarified India has no role once the projects are completed and it would be up to the Afghan people to protect them. Meanwhile, the Taliban spokesperson said the group’s policy does not allow if anyone wants to use Afghan soil for their objectives or for their military objectives or for their rivalries.

Mahadevapura in Bengaluru clocks highest COVID-19 caseload

August 17, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Throughout the pandemic, Mahadevapura Assembly constituency has contributed the biggest chunk of COVID-19 patients, clocking 85,761 cases. Officials say the high caseload is due to the density of the population in the constituency, with many apartment complexes reporting COVID cases.

As of August 14, BBMP data shows that Mahadevapura has reported 85,761 cases, and has at least 462 active cases. There have been 597 reported deaths here, and 84,702 patients have recovered. The positivity rate in the past 14 days has been the highest, at 1.13 per cent. Currently, Mahadevapura has the largest number of 49 active containment zones in the city.

A health officer from Mahadevapura zone said, “The constituency is heavily populated, hence, the high caseload. This apart, we have always carried out a high number of tests, at times crossing 6,000 per day. We focus on RT-PCR tests. However, there have been cases of inter-state travellers who caught the infection, which added to the caseload.”

Meanwhile, officials have been carrying out containment measures. “We have teams who keep checking if the Covid-positive individuals are following isolation protocol by not moving out their houses. A home buddy team calls the patient and asks if any assistance is required. There have also been cases where people staying in apartment complexes have caught the infection, we inform the neighbouring flat-dwellers so they can take utmost caution,” said a BBMP officer.

Bommanahalli constituency stands next on the list with 74,555 cases, 399 active cases and 699 Covid deaths. The number of recovered patients is 73,517. Many cases are migrant workers and labourers. “Construction labourers have tested positive, as also migrant workers who have come down from states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Right now, the active cases are low and positivity rate is less than 1 per cent,” said a Bommanahalli health officer.

The constituency which contributed the least number of cases is Chamarajpet, though it has a market, shops and establishments, with a lot of people movement. It has reported only 11,841 positive cases, 233 deaths and has 33 active cases. The positivity rate is just 0.14 per cent.

Taliban whitewash posters of women in Kabul as girls in Afghanistan stare at ‘blank’ future

August 17, 2021 by Nasheman

Even before Taliban could cement its political footprint in Afghanistan, capital Kabul is already facing a grim makeover. One sans pictures, ad posters of women on showrooms and beauty salons.

A photo of two men covering up such posters in the city has gone viral on Twitter.

The picture surfaces at a time when women in Afghanistan, who have been vulnerable targets of the Taliban regime in the past, are terrified of what lies ahead.

Multiple ‘reassurances’ from Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen that women’s rights will be respected this time around, in adherence to norms that suit Afghanistan’s future as an Islamic Emirate, has done little to help the cause.

Women from all spheres of society, football players to graduate students, are crying for help as the country’s inevitable instability leaves less to no options for them.

The Taliban swept into the capital on Sunday after the Western-backed government collapsed and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, bringing an end to a two-decade campaign in which the US and its allies had tried to transform the country.

Petrol bombs hurled at Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma’s private residence

August 16, 2021 by Nasheman

Shillong: Unidentified miscreants on Sunday night lobbed a petrol bomb at the residence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, police said.

The incident took place around 10.15 pm when vehicle-borne attackers lobbed two Molotov cocktail bottles at the premises of his personal residence at Third Mile in Upper Shillong, they said.

No one was injured in the incident, according to a senior district police officer.

The first bottle was lobbed at the front part of the house while the second one was thrown behind the backyard, he said, prompting the guards there to douse the fire immediately.

The state government has imposed a curfew in Shillong and banned mobile internet services in at least four districts as vandalism and arson rocked the state capital and nearby areas on Independence Day.

Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui resigned amid violence in Shillong over the police shooting of a former militant.

Rymbui also urged the CM to institute a judicial inquiry into the shooting of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, the self-styled general secretary of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council who had surrendered.

Thangkhiew, who had surrendered in 2018, was shot dead on August 13 when he allegedly tried to attack a police team with a knife during a raid at his house in connection with a series of IED blasts in the state.
